  • Change the default browser which Kopete opens when you click a link?

    I have FireFox as my desktop's default browser (Ubuntu/Gnome 9.10) and most applications open links into FF readily enough, including Choqok (a KDE twitter client). But Kopete insists on opening Konqueror - which is annoying as it takes an age to load, while FF is almost always open an simply needs a new tab. I've checked though the preferences of Kopete, and can't seem to find anything to make it use FF.

    There is huge number of different formats for virtual storage files for desktop and server purposes (vmdk, qcow2, vdi, vdk, etc.). I'm writing a little script for manipulating them and would like the script to be able to distinguish between them. Of course, it can be done via extension, but I want this to be more reliable. I tried commands file or qemu-img, but the results are not quite clear. Any idea improving my methods?

    Is there a way to prevent Windows from going into sleep mode while running a program on the command line or with cygwin? Ideally, I'm hoping for something that could be used like: nosleep myscript.sh Background Sometimes I start up long-running jobs like a manual backup or large file transfers and I've found that Windows often goes to sleep before these finish. I'd like to be able to start up the command and prevent sleep mode while the command is running, but have it automatically work again once the command has completed.

  • Automatically start VNC server on startup

    I installed the Ubuntu desktop on a Ubuntu 9.10 VPS server and am able to connect to the server using TightVNC. However, the VNC server on this VPS can only be started by logging in through SSH and typing the following command: vncserver :1 -geometry 800x600 -depth 16 -pixelformat rgb565 If I run this command on startup or as a schedule task, it won't start. What are my options? Thanks

  • How can I force Xbox Music to find music in all subfolders of my Music library?

    My music library is organized (roughly) like this: Music mp3 (original) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Tom) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Dick) Artist/Album/Song mp3 (from Harry) Artist/Album/Song ... etc. When I use the desktop Zune Software, it finds all of this music. However, the Xbox Music metro app only seems to find music in the "mp3 (original)" folder. How can I force it to find all of my music?

  • Graphical corruption during Linux startup and shutdown - should I be worried?

    For the last month, when starting up or shutting down my laptop under Linux, I would get graphical corruption. Startup has an colour inverted, grainy rendition of what should be displayed while shutdown has a red background with all the text replaced by grey rectangles. At the very least this affects Fedora, Ubuntu and Xubuntu. Windows is not affected. Outside of startup/shutdown the system is fine. Should I be worrying about this?

  • Get XMMS2 to call outside script on automatic playlist advance?

    Is there a way to get XMMS2 to call an outside script when it advances in a playlist - either automatically or via manual intervention (e.g. xmms2 next)? The goal is to have balloons pop up on my desktop to tell me what new song has started playing, and I really, really don't want to write a background daemon that polls 'xmms2 info' or 'xmms2 current' if there's a way to get it to issue the callback.     I'm really new to 802.1x but I'm trying to use 802.1x authentication in a wired network. My desktop is Linux (centos) using wpa_supplicant as the supplicant. I'm wondering what key_mgmt/eap is normally used in the wired environment? I went through http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Extensible_Authentication_Protocol but it doesn't clearly say which method/encapsulation is normally used for wired network. Can anyone give me a hint?   • Rsync: windows 7, synology: login error and permission denied error

    Good day to all of you all, I'm running into strange/stupid errors, and I hope anybody would be so kind to help me out. I have to admit, I am by no means a guru, so please bear with me :-) Situation: -Synology NAS (runs Linux), and Windows 7 desktop (1 normal/restricted user Lisa and 1 admin user). - Data from W7 desktop to be rsynced to synology: /volume1/home/Lisa/Backup - Rsync command: c:\cygwin\bin\rsync -avz /cygdrive/e/Lisa/ [email protected]:/volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup - I've set up ssh per these two threads: a. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/102 b. http://www.cesareriva.com/archives/112 Now the horrors begin: - root is allowed to run the rsync succesfully, however, he doesn't login automatically (so I can not use rsync in W7 batchscripts, which is of course required). - Lisa is allowed to login automatically but he can not succesfully finish the rsync command because of permission errors: rsync change dir /volume1/homes/Lisa/Backup failed: permissions denied. This happens for each and every file and subdir rsync tries to create. However, the main directory (Backup) is created. When I try to copy files from windows explorer to the directory 'Backup' using the very same user Lisa everything goes smoothly. So, obviously, there is a permission problem somewhere; either my rsync-command isn't correct, or the folder permissions for homes/Lisa aren't correct (but, then again, Windows 7 copies files to that folder without any problems, so that does make me believe the homes/Lisa-permissions don't appear to be the problem). I also tried adding: --chmod=Dugo+x --chmod=ugo+r which I found somewhere on the web, to the rsync-command, but this didn't solve any problem and gave the exact errors. Would anybody please please help me on how to fix this? I am utterly frustrated about this, because I have been trying for 1 month to get everything to work and it simply doesn't work. I bought the big Synology to end the horrors of 20 external USB-disks for once and for all (we have many pictures and home vids of our deceased dogs and want to watch these, the horrors being 'what material is on what disk'). I'll gladly return the favour of somebody helping me out by buying you a nice beer (paypal), if you could end my misery. I am not extremely skilled on Linux (not at all :-( ) so if you could give an extra word when possible so I understand what to do, I'd be very grateful.   • KeePass: use a key file or a regular password?

    I'm setting up a KeePass database and it offers the ability to use a key file, which it says is more secure because it can use a longer and more complex password but is easier to break because you only need the key file to open the database. I'll only be using the key file on 2 computers (one desktop and one laptop), wo which is the best option? Note that it's definitely more appealing to use the key file for me because i have a hard time remembering anything close to a random password.

  • Cannot access client pc remotely due to time/date issue xp win2k3 environment -- REMOTE solution please

    When I run psexec to the user desktop (xp pro) I get "There is a time and/or date difference between the client and the server." I also get "access denied" when I run the at \clientname time /interactive "net time \server /set /y" command. I cannot access the machine from my win2k3 server's AD Users and Computers utilities. Is going to the machine the only way to remedy? Clarify: Going to the machine and doing the net time command works, but I want a remote solution please.
