  • Long lines of text in source code [closed]

    - by ale
Possible Duplicate: Is the 80 character limit still relevant in times of widescreen monitors? I used to set a vertical line set at 80 characters in my text editor and then I added carriage returns if the lines got too long. I later increased the value to 135 characters. I started using word wrap and not giving myself a limit but tried to keep lines short if I could because it took a lot of time shortening my lines. People at work use word wrap and don't give themselves a limit.. is this the correct way? What are you meant to do ? Many thanks.

  • Print out the amount of times 2 words appear in the syslog. But also have it tell me how many times for each hour

    - by wolfspinone
So I'm trying to create a bash script that looks for two words in my syslog file. Then I want the script to print out how many times those two words have appeared. Also I want it to print it out for every hour of the day. So like if the word dog appeared 4 times during the first hour of today, it says Hour one, dog 4. Finally at the end of the script I want it to print out how many times those words appeared all day. The sudo code I have thus far is if 2 > hour find permit find block print both finish if 1 < hour < 2 find permit find block print both finish if 2 < hour < 3 find permit find block print both finish command is grep -o "\WORD\" Syslog.txt * | sort | uniq -c

  • I need advice on how to debug a cluster

    - by alcor
I'm the only developer of a complex critical software system, written in Visual C++ 2005. It's deployed on a classical Microsoft cluster scenario (active/passive), that has Windows Server 2003 R2. If a server A goes down, the other one (B) starts and take the ownership of its duties. You have to know that: both servers have the same Microsoft patches/fixes, same hardware, same everything. both servers use the same memory storage (a RAID-6 through fiber channel). this software has a main module who launch the peripheral modules. if a peripheral module crashes, the main module restarts it. When I switch the application in one of the two servers (let's say the B server) two of the peripheral modules of the main applications just started to crash apparently without reason about 2 seconds after the start of the peripheral module. What could I do to analyze/inspect/resolve this weird situation?

  • Unable to Connect to Management Studio Server

    - by Phil Hilliard
I have a nasty situation. I am using Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express edition locally on my pc for testing, and once tested I upload database changes to a remote server. I have a situation where I deleted the Default Database on my local machine, and instead of searching hard enough to find an answer to that problem, I uninstalled and reinstalled Management Studio. Since then Management Studio has not been able to connect to the server. Is there any help (or hope for me for that matter), out there????? The following is the detailed error message: =================================== Cannot connect to LENOVO-E7A54767\SQLEXPRESS. =================================== A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. • What makes a language (or feature) "hackerish"?

    - by iCanLearn
I was reading the comments and answers to this question, and among them I found this: "And Java never was cool, simply because it threw the hacking part out of programming" and this: "And javascript is very hackerish language so after developing your frontend you feel very constraint when you return to java." What's the "hacking part" in programming, and what makes a language "hackerish"? What are some good examples of languages and features in languages that you would call "hackerish"? (Someone might say that I shouldn't be confused by the word "hackerish", that's it's not really a "proper" English word or something like that, but that's besides the point)

  • C#.NET: How to update multiple .NET pages when a particular event occurs in one .Net page? In another words how to use Observer pattern(Publish and subscribe to events)

    Problem: Suppose you have a scenario in which you have to update multiple pages when an event occurs in main page. For example imagine you have a main page where you are dispalying a tab control. This tab control has 3 tab pages where you are loading 3 different user controls. On click of an update button in main page imagine if you have do something in all the 3 tab panels. In other words an event in main page has to be handled in many other pages. An event in main page which contains the tab control has to be handled in all the tab panels(user controls) Answer: Use Observer pattern Define a base page for the page that contains the tab control. Main page which contains the tab: Baseline_Baseline Basepage for the above main page: BaselineBasePage User control that has to be udpated for an event in main page: Baseline_PriorNonDeloitte Source Code: public class BaselineBasePage : System.Web.UI.Page { IList lstControls = new List(); public void Add(IObserver userControl) { lstControls.Add(userControl); } public void Remove(IObserver userControl) { lstControls.Remove(userControl); } public void RemoveAllUserControls() { lstControls.Clear(); } public void Update(SaveEventArgs e) { foreach (IObserver LobjControl in lstControls) { LobjControl.Save(e); } } } public interface IObserver { void Update(SaveEventArgs e); } public partial class Baseline_Baseline : BaselineBasePage { . . . this.Add(_ucPI); this.Add(_ucPI1); protected void abActionBar_saveClicked(object sender, EventArgs e) { SaveEventArgs se = new SaveEventArgs(); se.TabType = (BaselineTabType)tcBaseline.ActiveTabIndex; this.Update(se); } } Public class Baseline_PriorNonDeloitte : System.Web.UI.UserControl,IObserver { public void Update(SaveEventArgs e) { } } More info at: http://www.dofactory.com/Patterns/PatternObserver.aspx span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • Accessing controls of .aspx file in .aspx.cs without any declaration.!!??

    I am able to access the controls of ".aspx" file in ".aspx.cs" directly without any declaration in ".aspx.cs" or in designer.cs. How is this possible? This is happeing only if I open website as using File System. Create a new ASP.NET web site application with Visual Studio 2008. So following three files will be created automatically              "Default.aspx",              "Default.aspx.cs"              "Default.designer.cs" Now Delete "Default.designer.cs" perminently. Just create a button in Default.aspx file    <asp:Button runat="server" Text="Save Plan" ID="btnSave" />   Close the Solution and open the website as File System.               File -> Open Web Site -> File System -> Select Web Site Folder and Open the project.                   Now btnSave is automatically recognized in Default.aspx.cs without any declaration in Default.aspx.cs as bellow                            System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button btnSave; How btnSave is being recognized by .cs file without defining it anywhere as an object of System.Web.UI.WebControls.Button? Note: This happens only if you open Web Site from File System.           and No Declaration at all for btnSave. Please refer this article on this. span.fullpost {display:none;}

  • How can I make my Java desktop application to run on different computers in a network locally and updating same mysql database?

    - by JaMpa
I have developed Java desktop application for registration of students in the computer laboratories in our college, but what I need is to make this application whenever it runs on any computer (Windows XP machines) on the laboratory each and every data filled by the college students goes to the same MySql database (through WAMP server) running on the server machine (Win Server 2003). Also, I need this application to run during booting of windows computers in the laboratory for the purpose when any student tries to switch on any PC in the comp lab before interfacing the desktop icons should sign in through user name and password when he has already registered or signing up in order for getting the access.

  • sound cuts out at random times

    - by jayb151
Since I updated to 14.04, I have been having a problem with my sound. Every once in a while it "skips a beat." and when I say every once in a while, I mean 2-4 times a minute. It's literally that the sounds goes a way for about half a second. It doesn't pick up where it left off, but rather continues from where it should be...if that makes sense. So, if it cut in mid word, I wouldn't hear the end of the word. I didn't have this problem before I updated from 12.04. There is no popping or static, it just cuts for a fraction of a second. Any thoughts? Thanks!

  • Reading Data from DDFS ValueError: No JSON object could be decoded

    - by secumind
I'm running dozens of map reduce jobs for a number of different purposes using disco. My data has grown enormous and I thought I would try using DDFS for a change rather than standard txt files. I've followed the DISCO map/reduce example Counting Words as a map/reduce job, without to much difficulty and with the help of others, Reading JSON specific data into DISCO I've gotten past one of my latest problems. • Windows: what is the difference between DEP always on and DEP opt-out with no exceptions?

    - by Peter Mortensen
What is the difference between DEP always on ("/NoExecute=AlwaysOn" in boot.ini) and DEP opt-out ( "/NoExecute=OptOut" in boot.ini) with no exceptions? "no exceptions" = empty list of programs for which DEP does not apply. DEP = Data Execution Prevention (hardware). One would expect it to work the same way, but it makes a difference for some applications. E.g. for all versions of UltraEdit 14 (14.2). It crashes at startup for DEP always on, at least on Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition x64 edition. (2010-03-11: this problem has been fixed with UltraEdit 15.2 and later.) Update 1: I think this difference is caused by the backdoors that Microsoft has put into hardware DEP for OptOut, according to Fabrice Roux (see below). In the case of IrfanView, for which Steve Gibson observed the same difference as I did for UltraEdit (see below), the difference is caused by a non-DEP aware EXE packer (ASPack) that Microsoft coded a backdoor for. Is there a difference between Windows XP, Windows Vista and Windows 7 ? Is there a difference between 32 bit and 64 bit versions of Windows ? Sources: From [http://blog.fabriceroux.com/index.php/2007/02/26/hardware_dep_has_a_backdoor?blog=1], "Hardware DEP has a backdoor" by Fabrice Roux. 2007-02-26. "IrfanView was not using any trick to evade DEP ... Microsoft just coded a backdoor used only in OPTOUT. Bascially Microsoft checks the executable header for a section matching one of the 3 strings. If one these strings is found, DEP will be turned OFF for this application by windows. ... 'aspack', 'pcle', 'sforce'" From [http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-078.htm], by Steve Gibson. "I can’t find any documentation on Microsoft’s site anywhere, because we’re seeing a difference between always-on and opt-out. That is, you would imagine that always-on mode would be the same as opting out if you weren’t having any opt-out programs. It turns out it’s not the case. For example ... the IrfanView file viewer ... runs fine in opt-out mode, even if it has not been opted out. But it won’t launch, Windows blocks it from launching ... in always-on mode." From [http://www.grc.com/sn/sn-083.htm], by Steve Gibson. "... IrfanView ... won’t run with DEP turned on. It’s because it uses an EXE packer, an executable compression program called ASPack. And it makes sense that it wouldn’t because naturally an executable compressor has got to decompress the executable, so it allocates a bunch of data memory into which it decompresses the compressed executable, and then it runs it. Well, it’s running a data allocation, which is exactly what DEP is designed to stop. On the other hand, UPX, which is actually the leading and most popular EXE compressor, it’s DEP- compatible because those guys realized, hey, when we allocate this memory, we should mark the pages as executable."

  • MySQL select query result set changes based on column order

    - by user197191
I have a drupal 7 site using the Views module to back-end site content search results. The same query with the same dataset returns different results from MySQL 5.5.28 to MySQL 5.6.14. The results from 5.5.28 are the correct, expected results. The results from 5.6.14 are not. If, however, I simply move a column in the select statement, the query returns the correct results. Here is the code-generated query in question (modified for readability). I apologize for the length; I couldn't find a way to reproduce it without the whole query: SELECT DISTINCT node_node_revision.nid AS node_node_revision_nid, node_revision.title AS node_revision_title, node_field_revision_field_position_institution_ref.nid AS node_field_revision_field_position_institution_ref_nid, node_revision.vid AS vid, node_revision.nid AS node_revision_nid, node_node_revision.title AS node_node_revision_title, SUM(search_index.score * search_total.count) AS score, 'node' AS field_data_field_system_inst_name_node_entity_type, 'node' AS field_revision_field_position_college_division_node_entity_t, 'node' AS field_revision_field_position_department_node_entity_type, 'node' AS field_revision_field_search_lvl_degree_lvls_node_entity_type, 'node' AS field_revision_field_position_app_deadline_node_entity_type, 'node' AS field_revision_field_position_start_date_node_entity_type, 'node' AS field_revision_body_node_entity_type FROM node_revision node_revision LEFT JOIN node node_node_revision ON node_revision.nid = node_node_revision.nid LEFT JOIN field_revision_field_position_institution_ref field_revision_field_position_institution_ref ON node_revision.vid = field_revision_field_position_institution_ref.revision_id AND (field_revision_field_position_institution_ref.entity_type = 'node' AND field_revision_field_position_institution_ref.deleted = '0') LEFT JOIN node node_field_revision_field_position_institution_ref ON field_revision_field_position_institution_ref.field_position_institution_ref_target_id = node_field_revision_field_position_institution_ref.nid LEFT JOIN field_revision_field_position_cip_code field_revision_field_position_cip_code ON node_revision.vid = field_revision_field_position_cip_code.revision_id AND (field_revision_field_position_cip_code.entity_type = 'node' AND field_revision_field_position_cip_code.deleted = '0') LEFT JOIN node node_field_revision_field_position_cip_code ON field_revision_field_position_cip_code.field_position_cip_code_target_id = node_field_revision_field_position_cip_code.nid LEFT JOIN node node_node_revision_1 ON node_revision.nid = node_node_revision_1.nid LEFT JOIN field_revision_field_position_vacancy_status field_revision_field_position_vacancy_status ON node_revision.vid = field_revision_field_position_vacancy_status.revision_id AND (field_revision_field_position_vacancy_status.entity_type = 'node' AND field_revision_field_position_vacancy_status.deleted = '0') LEFT JOIN search_index search_index ON node_revision.nid = search_index.sid LEFT JOIN search_total search_total ON search_index.word = search_total.word WHERE ( ( (node_node_revision.status = '1') AND (node_node_revision.type IN ('position')) AND (field_revision_field_position_vacancy_status.field_position_vacancy_status_target_id IN ('38')) AND( (search_index.type = 'node') AND( (search_index.word = 'accountant') ) ) AND ( (node_revision.vid=node_node_revision.vid AND node_node_revision.status=1) ) ) ) GROUP BY search_index.sid, vid, score, field_data_field_system_inst_name_node_entity_type, field_revision_field_position_college_division_node_entity_t, field_revision_field_position_department_node_entity_type, field_revision_field_search_lvl_degree_lvls_node_entity_type, field_revision_field_position_app_deadline_node_entity_type, field_revision_field_position_start_date_node_entity_type, field_revision_body_node_entity_type HAVING ( ( (COUNT(*) >= '1') ) ) ORDER BY node_node_revision_title ASC LIMIT 20 OFFSET 0; Again, this query returns different sets of results from MySQL 5.5.28 (correct) to 5.6.14 (incorrect). If I move the column named "score" (the SUM() column) to the end of the column list, the query returns the correct set of results in both versions of MySQL. My question is: Is this expected behavior (and why), or is this a bug? I'm on the verge of reverting my entire environment back to 5.5 because of this.

  • Windows 7 - Intermittently processes will not close when the app closes

    - by Bill Sambrone
I have a user I am supporting who has the strangest issue. There are 2 problem applications, Word 2010 and a scanning program called ScandallPro. Intermittently (and at least once a day), she will close an app and the underlying process will not close. Both Word 2010 and this scanning software have all the latest updates. There is another user who has the same software that does not have this problem, and has identical hardware. I have formatted and rebuilt the computer for the user who is having the problems. After the rebuild, the machine was fine for a day but the scanning software continues to intermittently keep the process running even after it is closed. This is a problem because she cannot open a new instance of it while the process is still running. There is a boatload of line of business software on this machine, all of which she needs. I believe the Word 2010 issue is due to a misbehaving add-in (there are 2 add-ins, neither of which seem stable), and I think my best bet is to work with the add-in vendor on it. The scanning program staying open is isolated to this 1 user. The only difference between her machine and the other user is that she has Quickbooks, RoboForm, and Adobe Acrobat X Pro. Any ideas of what can be causing this, or other diagnostic steps to try?

  • Prevent Outlook 2010 Insert Picture resizing image

    - by Rup
When I "Insert Picture" a JPEG in Outlook 2010 it automatically resizes the image and, I think, recompresses it too. I realise this would be useful for photographs or for people who try to email 1MB BMPs but I would like to email around an image at the original pixel size without recompression. Is there a way to turn this off, or better still choose settings for each image insert? I found this page in the Office help. It's for Word, PowerPoint and Excel not Outlook but points you at File, Options, Advanced, Image Settings. There's no equivalent section in Outlook. I know Outlook uses Word as its editor so I've looked at Word's settings but there isn't an 'original size' here: there's only 'turn off image recompression' and pick target DPI from 96, 150, 220. I guess Office is finding a DPI value in the JPEG file and scaling it up or down to match this setting. I can't find an equivalent option in Outlook's options menu but there's so many settings and pop-up dialogs I may have missed something. Picture Format, Reset image size resets the image to the rescaled version, not the original. I can't see a way to edit a pixel value into size values in the image properties after insert. Thanks! I realise I can probably achieve this by editing the image metadata in PhotoShop elements or similar but there ought to be a way without editing the file? This is new behaviour in Outlook 2010; 2007 didn't do this.

  • How to add extensions to a lot of files using content of each file?

    - by v8media
I've got over 10,000 files that don't have extensions from older versions of the Mac OS. They're extremely nested, and they also have all sorts of strange formatting and characters. They don't have file types or creator codes attached to them any longer. A great deal of these files have text in the file that will let me determine extensions (for example Word.Document.8 is in every file created by that version of Word, and Excel.Sheet.8 in every file created with that version of Excel). I found a script that looks like it would work for one of these file types at a time, but it erases parts of filenames after nefarious characters, which is not good. find . -type f -not -name "." -print0 |\ xargs -0 file |\ grep 'Word.Document.8' |\ sed 's/:.*//' |\ xargs -I % echo mv % %.doc So, two questions from that: One is, should I clean the characters in the filenames first, or programmatically deal with those in the script in order to leave them the same? As long as I lose no information from the filenames, I don't see a problem cleaning out slashes and other problem characters. Also, if I clean the filenames, there are likely to be duplicates, so any cleaning script would have to add something like "-1" before the extension to make sure nothing gets lost. 2nd question is how do I change the script so that it will look for more than one file type at the same time and give each the proper extension? I'm not tied to this script, but it is understandable, which is a pro. Mac OS X 10.6 is installed on this file server, but I've got access to any recent versions of OS X. Thanks, Ian
