• Web service request ignores basic WSDL XML element restrictions

  Hi all, I have encountered some difficulties while trying to validate an incoming soap message to a service I have running on JBoss AS (v. 5.1.0). In my code, I have explicitly set some fields to be required, eg: public class MyClass { @XmlElement(required=true, nillable=false) private List<myOtherObjects> myList; } This requirement is also reflected in the WSDL (note the lack of minOccurs="0"): <xs:element maxOccurs="unbounded" name="myList" type="tns:myOtherObjects" /> However, when I do a test soap message that has myList set to empty or null, these restrictions are completely ignored, forcing me to validate manually within the application logic on the service. I did some searching on the Internet and found out that, on WebLogic, the validation does not seem to be enabled by default, though it can be turned on by modifying the weblogic-webservices.xml file. (http://forums.oracle.com/forums/thread.jspa?threadID=783972&tstart=115) I’m wondering if there is something similar that I have to do with JBoss AS to enable automatic validation before the soap message reaches the service. • Rails apps blew up on mediatemple's (dv) server

  i managed to fix this issue but i wanted to document it here for any others whom might have similar problems. I'm running a mediatemple (dv) rage server. monit started sending me alerts that i was having resource limitations on the server. logged into plesk and the CPU was pinned at 99.9%. Rebooted the server, catastrophe avoided... Not quite - all my rails apps were not loading My Setup ruby 1.8.6 Rails 2.3.5 w/ passenger installed as an apache module. I noticed a defunct ruby process so i killed and rebooted the server but runby continued to come back as defunct. Started trolling thru the apache log and i saw errors irt updating rubygems. i updated to the latest but then continued to get gem errors. Basically, I had to go thru all my apps and update any gems manually, reboot apache, and all was restored. Not really sure the cause of the issue but wanted to note it for posterity. Anybody else in the community ever have similar issues???

• Multiple Jira instances on a single Tomcat 6 server?

  I have a feeling this is a stupid question but I can't find the answer anywhere... I need to deploy 2 Jira instances on asingle Tomcat server, I can't figure out how to pass in the jira.home property The documentation says I need to:- Add a web context property called 'jira.home' — this property is set in different files depending on your application server. For example, for Tomcat (and therefore for JIRA Standalone), you will need to configure the server.xml file. For other application servers you may need to configure the web.xml file, or set 'Context parameter' options on the deployment UI of the application server, etc. Note that If you have specified a JIRA home in jira-application.properties (ie. the recommended method), it will override your web context property. • Blackberry: How to properly handle focus traversal in custom field?

  I am writing an app for Blackberry and I have the following problem: I have implemented a custom field by extending the Manager class. The field is quite simple, it consists of a label and two check boxes, yes and no. The fields are laid out so that the label is on the left and uses as much space as it can while still allowing room for the check boxes which are positioned next to each other at the right and vertically centred compared to the label (if it spans more than one line). So it looks like this: This is a question? O Yes O No Everything is fine so far in terms of laying out the fields. But now I am trying to handle focus traversal. First of all the default behaviour when the user scrolls up or down is to move between the yes and no options. I want to move to the next field above or below when up or down is pressed, so I did this: protected int moveFocus(int amount, int status, int time) { if (status == 537001984 || status == -1610481664) { // Up or down was pressed // Don't move focus between yes and no when up or down is pressed. return amount; } return super.moveFocus(amount, status, time); } And that seems to work. The next thing I would like to do is to remember which option last had the focus when the field loses focus, then on gaining focus again (regardless of which direction the focus comes from) set this field to have the focus. I tried overriding onUnfocus and onFocus so that onUnfocus I note which field was focussed then onFocus setFocus to that field. But I get a StackOverflowError, I guess because the call to setFocus on a field within the manager actually calls onFocus for the manager itself again?? So does anyone know how I should be doing this? I checked the DateField and it has the exact behaviour I am looking for, i.e. it remembers if you were last on the day, month or year field and sets this field to focus when the field itself gets the focus.

  First of all, I'm still working in classic ASP (vbScript) with an MS Access Database. And, yes I know its archaic, but I'm still hopeful I can do this! So now to my problem: Take the following table as an example: PROJECTS ContactName StartDate EndDate Complete Mitch 2009-02-13 2011-04-23 No Eric 2006-10-01 2008-11-15 Yes Mike 2007-05-04 2009-03-30 Yes Kyle 2009-03-07 2012-07-08 No Using ASP (with VBScript), and an MS Access Database as the backend, I’d like to be able to sort this table with the following logic: I would like to sort this table by date, however, depending on whether a given project is complete or not I would like it to use either the “StartDate” or “EndDate” as the reference for a particular row. So to break it down further, this is what I’m hoping to achieve: For PROJECTS where Complete = “Yes”, reference “EndDate” for the purpose of sorting. For PROJECTS where Complete = “No”, reference “StartDate” for the purpose of sorting. So, if I were to sort the above table following these rules, the output would be: PROJECTS ContactName StartDate EndDate Complete 1 Eric 2006-10-01 2008-11-15* Yes 2 Mitch 2009-02-13* 2011-04-23 No 3 Kyle 2009-03-07* 2012-07-08 No 4 Mike 2007-05-04 2009-03-30* Yes *I’ve put a star next to the date that should be used for the sort in the table above. • Can you add a UITableViewController's TableView to another View?

  I've inserted a UITableViewController and it's corresponding UITableView into a simple IB document. The goal is to include the UITableView inside of a parent UIWindow (or UIView) with other "stuff" (anything really) adorning the table. Build a working subclass of UITableViewController filled with data Customize the UTableView and it's cells including tap targets Add the newly created UITableViewController into an IB document Drag the UITableView out of the UITableViewController and into the main UIView Wire up the UITableViewController to the UITableView Note: adding the UITableViewController in code results in the same problem When running the app in the iPhone emulator or on a device the table displays correctly, but crashes the first time you try and interact with it. A scroll, a tap, anything crashes the app. This seems to be a delegate problem, like the UITableView doesn't know how to communicate back to the UITableViewController, but I have no idea how to correct the problem. So far I have been able to get by by customizing the tableHeaderView to get layouts that suffice, but I'd really prefer to have the other technique work.

• Why does Raphael's framerate slow down on this code?

  So I'm just doing a basic orbit simulator using Raphael JS, where I draw one circle as the "star" and another circle as the "planet". It seems to be working just fine, with the one snag that as the simulation continues, its framerate progressively slows down until the orbital motion no longer appears fluid. • SQL Server 2005 database design - many-to-many relationships with hierarchy

  Note I have completely re-written my original post to better explain the issue I am trying to understand. I have tried to generalise the problem as much as possible. Also, my thanks to the original people who responded. Hopefully this post makes things a little clearer. Context In short, I am struggling to understand the best way to design a small scale database to handle (what I perceive to be) multiple many-to-many relationships. Imagine the following scenario for a company organisational structure: Textile Division Marketing Division | | ---------------------- ---------------------- | | | | HR Dept Finance Dept HR Dept Finance Dept | | | | ---------- ---------- ---------- --------- | | | | | | | | Payroll Hiring Audit Tax Payroll Hiring Audit Accounts | | | | | | | | Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps Emps NB: Emps denotes a list of employess that work in that area When I first started with this issue I made four separate tables: Divisions - Textile, Marketing (PK = DivisionID) Departments - HR, Finance (PK = DeptID) Functions - Payroll, Hiring, Audit, Tax, Accounts (PK = FunctionID) Employees - List of all Employees (PK = EmployeeID) The problem as I see it is that there are multiple many-to-many relationships i.e. many departments have many divisions and many functions have many departments. Question Giving the database structure above, suppose I wanted to do the following: Get all employees who work in the Payroll function of the Marketing Division To do this I need to be able to differentiate between the two Payroll departments but I am not sure how this can be done? I understand that I could build a 'Link / Junction' table between Departments and Functions so that I can retrieve which Functions are in which Departments. However, I would still need to differentiate the Division they belong to. Research Effort As you can see I am an abecedarian when it comes to database deisgn. I have spent the last two days resaerching this issue, traversing nested set models, adjacency models, reading that this issue is known not to be NP complete etc. I am sure there is a simple solution?

• jQuery "Autcomplete" plugin is messing up the order of my data

  I'm using Jorn Zaefferer's Autocomplete plugin on a couple of different pages. In both instances, the order of displayed strings is a little bit messed up. Example 1: array of strings: basically they are in alphabetical order except for General Knowledge which has been pushed to the top: General Knowledge,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Displayed strings: General Knowledge,Geography,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Note that Geography has been pushed to be the second item, after General Knowledge. The rest are all fine. Example 2: array of strings: as above but with Cross-curricular instead of General Knowledge. Cross-curricular,Art and Design,Business Studies,Citizenship,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Displayed strings: Cross-curricular,Citizenship,Art and Design,Business Studies,Design and Technology,English,Geography,History,ICT,Mathematics,MFL French,MFL German,MFL Spanish,Music,Physical Education,PSHE,Religious Education,Science,Something Else Here, Citizenship has been pushed to the number 2 position. I've experimented a little, and it seems like there's a bug saying "put things that start with the same letter as the first item after the first item and leave the rest alone". Kind of mystifying. I've tried a bit of debugging by triggering alerts inside the autocomplete plugin code but everywhere i can see, it's using the correct order. it seems to be just when its rendered out that it goes wrong. • How to deal with calculated values with Dependency Properties on a custom WPF control

  To summarize what I'm doing, I have a custom control that looks like a checked listbox and that has two dependency properties one that provides a list of available options and the other that represents a enum flag value that combines the selection options. So as I mentioned my custom control exposes two different DependencyProperties, one of which is a list of options called Options and the other property called SelectedOptions is of a specific Enum type that uses the [Flags] attribute to allow combinations of values to be set. My UserControl then contains an ItemsControl similar to a ListBox that is used to display the options along with a checkbox. When the check box is checked or unchecked the SelectedOptions property should be updated accordingly by using the corresponding bitwise operation. The problem I'm experiencing is that I have no way other than resorting to maintaining private fields and handling property change events to update my properties which just feels unatural in WPF. I have tried using ValueConverters but have run into the problem that I can't really using binding with the value converter binding so I would need to resort to hard coding my enum values as the ValueConverter parameter which is not acceptable. If anybody has seen a good example of how to do this sanely I would greatly appreciate any input. Side Note: This has been a problem I've had in the past too while trying to wrap my head around how dependency properties don't allow calculated or deferred values. Another example is when one may want to expose a property on a child control as a property on the parent. Most suggest in this case to use binding but that only works if the child controls property is a Dependency Property since placing the binding so that the target is the parent property it would be overwritten when the user of the parent control wants to set their own binding for that property.

• Is any solution the correct solution?

  I always think to myself after solving a programming challenge that I have been tied up with for some time, "It works, thats good enough". I don't think this is really the correct mindset, in my opinion and I think I should always be trying to code with the greatest performance. Anyway, with this said, I just tried a ProjectEuler question. Specifically question #2. How could I have improved this solution. I feel like its really verbose. • JSF Render response programmatically

  I have one parent page with a parentManagedBean (attached to Session Scope). On click of a button on this parent page, one popup comes which has a childManagedBean (attached to Request scope). Now ChildManagedBean holds a reference to parentManaged bean through JSF's managed property facility. On this popup window, user selects some option which populates a large value object. I use the managed property of childManagedBean to set the values from this large object to that of parentManagedBean. Problem is - The parent page shows a link, on click of which a popup comes, on selection of the popup, the popup disappears and set the values to the parentManaged bean. So far so good, but the newly set values need to appear on the parent page. This is where I am stuck. How to programmatically render the master page/render page when I am at the child managed bean? Is there a way I can get handle of the parent page and refresh it? Note: I'm using JSF 1.1 EDIT- After following the solution of "resubmit-ing the form" from javascript, I am seeing that the old form is getting resubmitting which overwrites all of my changed values.

  My problem is this: I want to create a grails domain instance, defining the 'Many' instances of another domain that it has. Is it not possible to pass the Skills at construction time? There must be a way round this? I need a single form to allow a person to register but I want to normalise the data so that I can add more skills at a later time.   I've been trying to track down a bug I thought was thread-related, but I think instead there is an issue with the way I am using OpenNETCF's Stopwatch. I am using OpenNETCF.IoC in my application, but for the sake of simplicity I moved the following code directly into a view: public partial class WorkoutView : SmartPart { ... private Stopwatch stopwatch; public WorkoutView() { ... stopwatch = new Stopwatch(); stopwatch.Reset(); stopwatch.Start(); WorkoutDisplayTimer = new Timer(); WorkoutDisplayTimer.Interval = 500; WorkoutDisplayTimer.Tick += new EventHandler(WorkoutDisplayTimer_Tick); WorkoutDisplayTimer.Enabled = true; } void WorkoutDisplayTimer_Tick(object sender, EventArgs e) { ... stopwatch.Stop(); lbl.Text = stopwatch.ElapsedTicks.ToString() + "NOT WORKING: " + stopwatch.Elapsed.ToString(); stopwatch.Start(); } ... } Long story short, looking at stopwatch in the debugger, the only values that ever get updated are ElapsedTicks, mElapsed, mStartPerfCount. Everything else is always zero. Is this expected behavior? Do I need to call an additional method to have the stopwatch calculate the Elapsed struct? (Note: stopwatch.ElapsedMilliseconds is also zero)

• Using Haml & Sass with Eclipse

  Are there any plugins for eclipse that add syntax highlighting and other niceties for editing Haml and Sass? Google searches only seem to point to a dead project on lucky-dip.net. Note: it's Sass I'm most interested in. A solution for using just Sass (or something similar to it like less) in Eclipse would suit my needs. Also, I'm developing for Google App Engine (Java), using the App Engine plugin for Eclipse. So switching to another IDE isn't an option. Update: So I've got syntax highlighting now using Pascal's answer and I've installed Ruby and Compass to compile sass into css. However I'm aware that the syntax of sass will be changing with 2.4 so I'd still like to get the Haml and Sass Editors that come with Aptana to work. When I tried to use them they threw an exception and wouldn't display the files. I'd be interested to know if that's because I misconfigured Aptana or is an actual bug in the editors. I'd also be very interested in any way of compiling Sass that integrated with Ecplise so that I didn't have to run something separate from it. (or a way of putting Sass/Compass in the Ecplise build process.)

• Entire Table is pushed to the next page when rendering a SSRS 2005 Report (as .pdf) in SSRS 2008

  I have a SSRS 2005 report that I'm rendering in SSRS 2008 as a .pdf. The report contains (among other things) a table that's very simple: header row, details, no footer, no aggregation, no grouping, keep together = false, pageBreakAtStart = false, pageBreakAtEnd = false, repeatHeaderOnNewPage = true. I resized the table to be much narrower than the body of the report just to be sure it wasn't extending beyond the bounds of the report, pushing everything down. But, no matter what I try, if some of the detail rows in that table would need to be pushed to the next page, then the ENTIRE TABLE is pushed to the next page, not just the extra rows. So my question is: Is there a workaround for this problem, is this a known issue, or is it even possible to get this 2005 report to render properly in 2008? NOTE: this is related to a question that I previously asked here, and is based on this MSDN forum post started by a coworker. This question is not the same as my previous question, as I'd like to see things work properly in with a 2005 report. If it's not possible, that would be good to know, as it would indicate that we need to upgrade one of our servers to SQL 2008. Thanks!

  Scenario I've created a windows service, but whenever I start it, it stops immediately. The service was concieved from a console application that used to subscribe to an event and watch processes on a server. If anything happened to process (i.e. It was killed), then the event would trigger the process to be restarted. Console.ReadLine(); } Now that this code has been turned into a Windows Service, it is essentially EXACTLY THE SAME. However, the service does not sit there waiting, even with the readline, it just ends..... New Windows Service Code: protected override void OnStart(string[] args) { ProcessMonitor pm = new ProcessMonitor(); Console.ReadLine(); } Thoughts Since the functionality is entirely encapsulated within this single class (It quite literally starts, sets up some events and waits) - How can I get the service to actually sit there and just wait? It seems to be ignoring the readline. However this works perfectly as a console application, it is just far more convenient to have it as a service.

• Delphi - Message loop for Form created in DirectShow filter goes dead

  I have a DirectShow filter created with Delphi Pro 6 and the DSPACK direct show library. I'm running under windows XP. I've tried creating the form dynamically when the container class for the DirectFilter has its constructor called, passing NIL into the constructor as the AOwner parameter (TMyForm.Create(nil) and then calling the Form's Show() method. The form does show but then appears to stop receiving windows messages because it never repaints and does not respond to input. As a test I then tried creating my own WndProc() and overriding the Form's WndProc(). My WndProc() did get called once but never again. I'm guessing it's because I'm a DLL and the context that I am running in is not "friendly" to the window message handler for the form; perhaps something to do with the thread that calls it or whatever. If someone could give me a tip on how to solve this or what the proper way to create a persistent window is from the context of a DirectShow filter I'd appreciate it. Note, as I said the window needs to be persistent so I can't create it as a Filter property page. Thanks, Robert

• Time to start returning IQueryable<T> instead of IList<T> to my Web UI / Web API Layer?

  I've got a multi-layer application that starts with the repository pattern for all data access and it returns IQueryable to the Services layer. The Services layer, which includes all of the business logic, returns IList to the Controllers (note: I'm using ASP.NET MVC for the UI layer). The benefit of returning IQueryable in the data access layer is that it allows my repositories to be extremely simple and the database queries to be deferred. However, I'm triggering the database queries in my services layer so that my unit tests is more reliable and I don't give flexibility to the Controllers to reshape my queries. However, I've recently encountered several situations where deferring the execution of queries down to the Controllers would have been significantly more performant because the Controllers had to do some projections on the data that was UI specific. Additionally, with the emergence of things like oData, I was starting to wonder if end points (e.g. web UI or web apis) should be working directly with IQueryable. What are your thoughts? Is it time to start returning IQueryable from the services layer to the UI layer? Or stick with IList? • How do you pass .net objects values around in F#?

  I am currently learning F# and functional programming in general (from a C# background) and I have a question about using .net CLR objects during my processing. The best way to describe my problem will be to give an example: let xml = new XmlDocument() |> fun doc -> doc.Load("report.xml"); doc let xsl = new XslCompiledTransform() |> fun doc -> doc.Load("report.xsl"); doc let transformedXml = new MemoryStream() |> fun mem -> xsl.Transform(xml.CreateNavigator(), null, mem); mem This code transforms an XML document with an XSLT document using .net objects. Note XslCompiledTransform.Load works on an object, and returns void. Also the XslCompiledTransform.Transform requires a memorystream object and returns void. The above strategy used is to add the object at the end (the ; mem) to return a value and make functional programming work. When we want to do this one after another we have a function on each line with a return value at the end: let myFunc = new XmlDocument("doc") |> fun a -> a.Load("report.xml"); a |> fun a -> a.AppendChild(new XmlElement("Happy")); a Is there a more correct way (in terms of functional programming) to handle .net objects and objects that were created in a more OO environment? The way I returned the value at the end then had inline functions everywhere feels a bit like a hack and not the correct way to do this. Any help is greatly appreciated!

• C++ thread safety - exchange data between worker and controller

  I still feel a bit unsafe about the topic and hope you folks can help me - For passing data (configuration or results) between a worker thread polling something and a controlling thread interested in the most recent data, I've ended up using more or less the following pattern repeatedly: Mutex m; tData * stage; // temporary, accessed concurrently // send data, gives up ownership, receives old stage if any tData * Send(tData * newData) { ScopedLock lock(m); swap(newData, stage); return newData; } // receiving thread fetches latest data here tData * Fetch(tData * prev) { ScopedLock lock(m); if (stage != 0) { // ... release prev prev = stage; stage = 0; } return prev; // now current } Note: This is not supposed to be a full producer-consumer queue, only the msot recent data is relevant. Also, I've skimmed ressource management somewhat here. When necessary I'm using two such stages: one to send config changes to the worker, and for sending back results. Now, my questions assuming that ScopedLock implements a full memory barrier: do stage and/or workerData need to be volatile? is volatile necessary for tData members? can I use smart pointers instead of the raw pointers - say boost::shared_ptr? Anything else that can go wrong? I am basically trying to avoid "volatile infection" spreading into tData, and minimize lock contention (a lock free implementation seems possible, too). However, I'm not sure if this is the easiest solution. ScopedLock acts as a full memory barrier. Since all this is more or less platform dependent, let's say Visual C++ x86 or x64, though differences/notes for other platforms are welcome, too. (a prelimenary "thanks but" for recommending libraries such as Intel TBB - I am trying to understand the platform issues here)

• Wysiwyg with image copy/paste

  First, I understand that an image cannot be "copied" from a local machine into a website. I understand that it must be uploaded. I am a web programmer, and am familiar with common web wysiwyg tools such as TinyMCE and FCKEditor. My question is if there exists a program or web module or something of the sort that works will perform an automatic upload of images for a wysiwyg. I have a client that is constantly complaining about not being able to copy/paste documents with images from MS Word into a wysiwyg to create content on their website. I have looked into TX Text Control (http://labs.textcontrol.com/) and was looking into a possibly flash wysiwyg that could upload the file automatically behind the scenes. I don't know if this exists, and google did not much help me in my search, so I thought I would ask other coders. I am open to any sort of server technology, or browser requirements. I am looking for some browser based tool instead of an application tool such as Dreamweaver or otherwise. If no good solution to the problem exists, I am willing to accept that at this point. Note: This was a request from a client, and to me it seemed rather unreasonable. I decided to gather community advice instead of just tell the client 'No' and the options here have been extremely helpful and informative in presenting possible solutions.

• Programmatically Set Proxy Address, Port, User, Password throught Windows Registry

  I'm writing a small C# application that will use Internet Explorer to interact with a couple a websites, with help from WatiN. However, it will also require from time to time to use a proxy. I've came across Programmatically Set Browser Proxy Settings in C#, but this only enables me to enter a proxy address, and I also need to enter a Proxy username and password. How can I do that? Note: It doesn't matter if a solution changes the entire system Internet settings. However, I would prefer to change only IE proxy settings (for any connection). The solution has to work with IE8 and Windows XP SP3 or higher. I'd like to have the possibility to read the Proxy settings first, so that later I can undo my changes. EDIT With the help of the Windows Registry accessible through Microsoft.Win32.RegistryKey, i was able to apply a proxy something like this: RegistryKey registry = Registry.CurrentUser.OpenSubKey("Software\\Microsoft\\Windows\\CurrentVersion\\Internet Settings", true); registry.SetValue("ProxyEnable", 1); registry.SetValue("ProxyServer", "127.0.0.1:8080"); But how can i specify a username and a password to login at the proxy server? I also noticed that IE doesn't refresh the Proxy details for its connections once the registry was changed how can i order IE to refresh its connection settings from the registry? Thanks

• PHP PCRE differences on testing and hosting servers

  Hi all, I've got the following regular expression that works fine on my testing server, but just returns an empty string on my hosted server. $text = preg_replace('~[^\\pL\d]+~u', $use, $text); Now I'm pretty sure this comes down to the hosting server version of PCRE not being compiled with Unicode property support enabled. The differences in the two versions are as follows: My server: PCRE version 7.8 2008-09-05 Compiled with UTF-8 support Unicode properties support Newline sequence is LF \R matches all Unicode newlines Internal link size = 2 POSIX malloc threshold = 10 Default match limit = 10000000 Default recursion depth limit = 10000000 Match recursion uses stack Hosting server: PCRE version 4.5 01-December-2003 Compiled with UTF-8 support Newline character is LF Internal link size = 2 POSIX malloc threshold = 10 Default match limit = 10000000 Match recursion uses stack Also note that the version on the hosting server (the same version PHP is compiled against) is pretty old. What confuses me though, is that pcretest fails on both servers from the command line with re> ~[^\\pL\d]+~u ** Unknown option 'u' although this regexp works fine when run from PHP on my server. So, I guess my questions are does the regular expression fail on the hosting server because of the lack of Unicode properties? Or is there something else that I'm missing? Thanks all, Gaz.
