• Using Sql Server Change Data Capture with a frequently changing schema

  We are looking into enabling Sql Server Change Data Capture for a new subsystem we are building. It's not really because we need it, but we are being pushed for having a complete history traceability, and CDC would nicely solve this requirement with minimum effort on our parts. We are following an agile development process, which in this case means that we frequently make changes to the database schema, e.g. adding new columns, moving data to other columns, etc. We did a small test where we created a table, enabled CDC for that table, and then added a new column to the table. Changes to the new column is not registered in the CDC table. Is there a mechanism to update the CDC table to the new schema, and are there any best practices to how you deal with captured data when migrating the database schema?

• Updated Payroll Tax Liability Formula for Dynamics GP

  Prior to the latest Payroll Update for Great Plains, you could do an audit check of the Payroll Tax Liability GP calculation by simply taking Federal Tax Witholding + Fica Medicare Withholding times 2 + Fica SSN times 2.  As you probably know by now, the Employers portion of FICA is 6.2% and the Employers portion has been reduced to 4.2%. However, I have had a number of clients contact me and say this formula is no longer applicable and have asked for a revised formula.  The new formula is described below and ties out to a sample Payroll Run using Fabrikam.   As you can see from above, the prior formula is not applicable and the new audit check is as follows; Federal Tax WH  $                  6,655.17   Employee Medicare  $                     408.47   Employees SS  $                  1,746.54   Employer Medicare  $                     408.47   Employer SS  $                  1,746.55 (FICA Owned – FICA Medicare WH)       Total Tax Liability  $               10,965.20   I have talked with Microsoft and at this time, they have no intent on modifying the report to split out the employer (6.2%) and employee (4.2%) FICA portions.

• Grub does not autoboot the default option after upgrade to 12.10

  I recently upgraded Ubuntu from 12.04 to 12.10 and since that time, the system does not automatically boot. It always opens the boot menu, and I have to press Enter to make it boot Ubuntu. It seems to be ignoring the timeout value, and using a 'neverending' timeout. There are no other systems (no dual boot), only the options originally installed by default Ubuntu 12.04 installation. My /etc/default/grub has only these effective options: GRUB_DEFAULT='Ubuntu' GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT=1 GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET=true GRUB_TIMEOUT=1 GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian` GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash" GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX="" GRUB_TERMINAL=console I experimented with GRUB_DEFAULT, giving it values '0', '1', 'Ubuntu' but nothing helps. • Application qos involving priority and bandwidth

  Our manager wants us to do applicaiton qos which is quite different from the well-known system qos. We have many services of three types, they have priorites, the manager wants to suspend low priority services requests when there are not enough bandwidth for high priority services. But if the high priority services requests decrease, the bandwidth for low priority services should increase and low priority service requests are allowed again. There should be an algorithm involving priority and bandwidth. I don't know how to design the algorithm, is there any example on the internet? Somebody can give suggestion? Thanks. We are setting the maximum bandwidth for the three types of services via ports of services via TC (TC is the linux qos tool whose name means traffic control).

• How are Java ByteBuffer's limit and position variable's updated?

  There are two scenarios: writing and reading Writing: Whenever I write something to the ByteBuffer by calling its put(byte[]) method the position variable is incremented as: current position + size of byte[] and limit stays at the max. If, however, I put the data in a view buffer then I will have to, manually, calculate and update the position Before I call the write(ByteBuffer) method of the channel to write something, I will have to flip() the Bytebuffer so that position points to zero and limit points to the last byte that was written to the ByteBuffer. Reading: Whenever I call the read(ByteBuffer) method of a channel to read something, the position variable stays at 0 and the limit variable of the ByteBuffer points to the last byte that was read. So, if the ByteBuffer is smaller than the file being read, the limit variable is pushed to max This means that the ByteBuffer is already flipped and I can proceed to extracting the values from the ByteBuffer. Please, correct me where I am wrong :)

• How do I join a channel on Freenode with Empathy?

  I have empathy already installed but am not sure how to configure it to join the channel at http://www.ape-project.org. I do not have a password or login name yet to properly configure the channel with Empathy and when I click "Join our IRC Channel" firefox comes back with an error stating: Firefox doesn't know how to open this address, because the protocol (irc) isn't associated with any program. What can I do to join this (freenode) channel? UPDATE 1 Using Empathy Version 2.23.1 When viewing accounts click "Add..." So, I thought I managed to remove KDE completely, but apparently that did not work at all, because every KDE application is back, including the KDE splash screen. But now, one week later I still boot to ubuntu-desktop, but like I said, the kde splash screen and applications are all back. How should I remove kubuntu-desktop?

• How can I find files quicker than find or locate?

• How can I sell a legacy program rewrite to the business?

  We have a legacy classic ASP application that's been around since 2001. It badly needs to be re-written, but it's working fine from an end user perspective. The reason I feel like a rewrite is necessary is that when we need to update it (which is admittedly not that often) then it takes forever to go through all the spaghetti code and fix problems. Also, adding new features is also a pain since it was architect-ed and coded badly. I've run cost analysis for them on maintenance but they are willing to spend more for the small maintenance jobs than a rewrite. Any suggestions on convincing them otherwise?

• Backup systems config files

  I'm planning on installing nVidia proprietary drivers on my Ubuntu 10.10. Historically this always ends-up with me being left with no graphical interface. No ability to revert - and reinstalling the whole system. So now, before trying this anew, I wish to backup all relevant config files. I'll try 1 or 2 methods. I'll list each one's commands. • apt-get works with --force-yes but cannot reproduce the issue on a fresh box

  apt-get does not work the first time but works the second time i install ntp like: apt-get -q -y install ntp=1:4.2.6.p3+dfsg-1ubuntu3.1 It failed saying: WARNING: The following packages cannot be authenticated! libcap2 libopts25 ntp E: There are problems and -y was used without --force-yes Afterwards i ran, apt-key update and ran the same commad with --force-yes: apt-get -q -y --force-yes install ntp=1:4.2.6.p3+dfsg-1ubuntu3.1 Thereafter running apt-get purge and reinstalling ntp runs. "without" --force-yes apt-get purge libcap2 libopts25 ntp apt-get -q -y install ntp=1:4.2.6.p3+dfsg-1ubuntu3.1 Also i created a fresh VM and could not reproduce the issue.   Ubuntu 12.04 was functioning properly . Then after an update, some graphic elements stop working properly. I could not launch programs that has 3D elements. Work space switcher's window displays 2D window instead of a 3D like usual. In Details menu, the Graphic row is blank. I am using Intel GMA 4500MHD graphic card. I am guessing that the driver is not properly installed? Anyone has the same issue? Please help!

I managed to get Ubuntu booted but the screen looks like a corrupt/glitch image. I can just about make out the clock on the bottom right and a few icons. I've been told that this is an easy fix and that nomodeset needs to be set for the graphics card but all the solutions i find are for a hard drive installed Ubuntu where you can cd in and edit the grub file - how do you do this is it's in an iso? • TFS 2008 to TFS 2010 moves and some issues

  There have been many things going on this year around TFS.  Most of them had to do with migrations (I don’t call them upgrades for the most part since it involved new hardware and such).  Many were implementations using the Conchango SfTS template (now EMC). But there were others that were CMMI or Agile 4.0. Everything would move just fine, no issues.  That was until you attempted to run Test Case Management or run the last configuration steps for Lab Management. There is an error that states a project is not ready to run or integrate with Test or Lab Management.  And while there was some documentation on how to adjust and update the Agile WITs to work with it, there was still some disconnect to making it work with CMMI.   I've Ubuntu 12.04 installed along with windows 7. After trying to update the Geforce driver on Ubuntu (already updated on windows), Ubuntu fails to boot. It will only give me a black screen and ask for log in user name and password and stays on the black screen. I've tried to fix it from a boot repair disk, which had generated a long report and then told me that Wubi.exe is not found. How can I retrieve my [revious installation, or fix it please? • Mobile phone detection (brand, model, browser etc)

  What do you use to detect visitor's mobile phone, down to the model if possible? Currently we maintain our own database but it's really getting behind due to lack of manpower to maintain it, so we decided to give 3rd party solution a try. These are my candidates but I don't have time to really try them all: DeviceAtlas - 1 year personal evaluation, but basic license is affordable. Their database look solid with daily update and user-contributed tests / updates. I am favoring this one at the moment. DetectRight - I was recommended this by a colleague but really can't find much from their site. 20k devices -- really? WURFL - Open source, database collaboratively derived from UAProf. So basically if you're going with UAProf solution, you're better off with WURFL. DetectMoBileBrowsers - This looks like the simplest of all. Too bad it's language dependent (PHP). Please share your experience or suggestions!

• How can I install a specific older version of Firefox and keep it from automatically updating?

  I wrote a bash script to configure a suite of tools for continuous integration on top of Ubuntu 10.04.2. The script recently stopped working and I tracked the problem down to the newer version of Firefox that was just released. The image of Ubuntu that I'm starting with already has Firefox installed, but I need a version in between what it comes with and the latest. Here's the code I was using: sudo add-apt-repository ppa:mozillateam/firefox-stable sudo apt-get update echo "y" | sudo apt-get install firefox How can I instead install Firefox 7.0.1 and keep it from automatically upgrading to the latest version? If I can, I'd like to avoid installing Firefox manually, so I can more easily use apt-get later, once the issue I'm running into gets resolved.
