• Register all GUI components as Observers or pass current object to next object as a constructor argu

- by Jack
First, I'd like to say that I think this is a common issue and there may be a simple or common solution that I am unaware of. Many have probably encountered a similar problem. Thanks for reading. I am creating a GUI where each component needs to communicate (or at least be updated) by multiple other components. Currently, I'm using a Singleton class to accomplish this goal. Each GUI component gets the instance of the singleton and registers itself. When updates need to be made, the singleton can call public methods in the registered class. I think this is similar to an Observer pattern, but the singleton has more control. Currently, the program is set up something like this: class c1 { CommClass cc; c1() { cc = CommClass.getCommClass(); cc.registerC1( this ); C2 c2 = new c2(); } } class c2 { CommClass cc; c2() { cc = CommClass.getCommClass(); cc.registerC2( this ); C3 c3 = new c3(); } } class c3 { CommClass cc; c3() { cc = CommClass.getCommClass(); cc.registerC3( this ); C4 c4 = new c4(); } } etc. Unfortunately, the singleton class keeps growing larger as more communication is required between the components. I was wondering if it's a good idea to instead of using this singleton, pass the higher order GUI components as arguments in the constructors of each GUI component: class c1 { c1() { C2 c2 = new c2( this ); } } class c2 { C1 c1; c2( C1 c1 ) { this.c1 = c1 C3 c3 = new c3( c1, this ); } } class c3 { C1 c1; C2 c2; c3( C1 c1, C2 c2 ) { this.c1 = c1; this.c2 = c2; C4 c4 = new c4( c1, c2, this ); } } etc. The second version relies less on the CommClass, but it's still very messy as the private member variables increase in number and the constructors grow in length. Each class contains GUI components that need to communicate through CommClass, but I can't think of a good way to do it. If this seems strange or horribly inefficient, please describe some method of communication between classes that will continue to work as the project grows. Also, if this doesn't make any sense to anyone, I'll try to give actual code snippets in the future and think of a better way to ask the question. Thanks.

• Notify user on database change? JavaScript/AJAX

- by Andreas Carlbom
Yo. I'm really quite new to this whole JavaScript business, not to mention AJAX, so I was thinking if you guys could help me out with a conundrum. Basically, what I want is for the user to be notified upon a change in a value of a MySQL table. How should I go about that? Should I use jQuery, or can I slap something together myself? Thankful for any and all replies.

• Rails, JSON Object, jQuery, Auto-Complete

- by Michael Waxman
I'm using this jquery autocomplete plug-in with rails: http://docs.jquery.com/Plugins/Autocomplete I can't figure out how to format my results, both in my Rails controller and in my javascript file. I have something like this in my controller... @query = params[:q].downcase @json = User.all(:login => /^#{@query}/) respond_to do |format| format.js { render :json => @json.to_json(:only => "login"), :layout => false } end And then this in my script.js file... $("#form").autocomplete('/url', { width: 320, dataType: 'json', highlight: false, scroll: true, scrollHeight: 300 }) But I can't figure out how to parse the data, so my autocomplete just gets a raw array of all my results at once. How do I process the JSON in the script.js file and/or in my controller for it to work?

• How to assign .net membership roles to individual database records

- by mdresser
I'm developing a system where we want to restrict the availability of information displayed to users based on their roles. e.g. I have a tabled called EventType (ID, EventTypeDescription) which contains the following records: 1, 'Basic Event' 2, 'Intermediate Event' 3, 'Admin Event' What I need to achieve is to filter the records returned based on the username (and hence role) of the logged-in user. e.g if an advanced user is logged in they will see all the event types, if the standard user is logged in they will only see the basic event type etc. Ideally id like to do this in a way which can be easily extended to other tables as necessary. So I'd like to avoid simply adding a 'Roles' field to each table where the data is user context sensitive. One idea I'm thinking of is to create some kind of permissions table like: PermissionsTable ( ID, Aspnet_RoleId, TableName, PrimaryKeyValue ) this has the drawback of using this is obviously having to use the table name to switch which table to join onto. Edit: In the absence of any better suggestions, I'm going to go with the last idea I mentioned, but instead of having a TableName field, I'm going to normalise the TableName out to it's own table as follows: TableNames ( ID, TableName ) UserPermissionsTable ( ID, Aspnet_UserId, TableID, PrimaryKeyValue )

• Java : Storing Data in Array Of Object from JOptionPane Dialog

- by Bader
hi guys i need to know how i can insert data inside objects inside an array of objects using my already made Set methods. i need to know how should i do it through user , i mean JOptionPane input dialog
student[] s=new student[5]; for (int i=1 ; i <= s.length ;i++) { s[i] = new student(i,"AAA","Ecommerce",0.0); } for (int i=1; i<=s.length;i++) { name = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please Write Name for student n " + i); major = JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please Write Major for student n " + i); gpa =Double.parseDouble(JOptionPane.showInputDialog("Please Write GPA for student n " +i)); s[i]=new student(i,name,major,gpa); }
i tried to do vars here that get data from user by JOptionPane, but it seems that i only use my already made constructor , not the Set methods. i need to use the methods because it has some validation code inside it. any ideas ?

• Rails: Passing new child object placeholder (build) to parent view

- by Meltemi
I've got 2 classes of objects... Magician has_many Rabbits and Rabbit belongs_to Magician. When viewing a Magician (show.html) I'd like to list all the associated Rabbits and then have some blank fields with a submit button to add a new Rabbit. To do so I build a new rabbit (associated to the current magician) in the Magician's show method (below). Edit2: found way to make it work but not sure if it's the "Rails way"? see comments inline (below): If I build the rabbit in Magician's show method then when show is rendered an empty (and invalid) rabbit ends the list before the new rabbit form fields are then shown. If I build it in the view itself then everything works & renders correctly. I was led to believe that we should not be doing this type of stuff in the view...if so, what's the proper way to address this? #/app/controllers/magicians_controller.rb class MagiciansController < ApplicationController respond_to :html, :json def show @magician = Magician.find(params[:id]) @rabbit = @magician.rabbits.build # <=== build here and empty rabbit gets # included in @magician.rabbits when they're rendered... # but is NOT included in @magician.rabbits.count for some reason?!?!? respond_with(@magician) end ... end #view/magicians/show.html.haml %p %b Name: = @magician.name %h2 Rabbits = "There are #{pluralize(@magician.rabbits.count, "rabbit")}" = render @magician.rabbits, :target => @magician %h2 Add a rabbit: - @rabbit = @clown.rabbits.build -# <=== build here and everything SEEMS to work = render :partial =>"rabbits/form", :locals => { :parent => @magician, :foreign_key => :magician_id, :flash => flash } Edit1: Adding generated html from partial as per request: <p> <b>Rabbit:</b> <b>Color:</b> | <b>ID:</b> <a href="/magicians/2/rabbits" data-confirm="Sure? A bunny will die" data-method="delete" rel="nofollow">Kill Rabbit</a> </p> And I suppose you probably want to see the partial that generates this: %p %b Rabbit: = rabbit.name %b Color: = rabbit.color | %b ID: = rabbit.id = link_to("Kill Rabbit", [target, rabbit], :method => :delete, :confirm => "Sure? A bunny will die")

• Is writing eSQL database independent or not?

- by Robert Koritnik
Using EF we can use LINQ to read data which is rather simple (especially using fluent calls), but we have less control unless we write eSQL on our own. Is writing eSQL actually data store independent code? So if we decide to change data store, can the same statements still be used? Does writing eSQL strings in your code pose any serious security threats similar to writing TSQL statements as plain strings in C# code? That's why SPs are recommended. Could we still move eSQL scripts outside of code and use some other technique to make them a bit more secure?

• AutoMapper How to map nested object from an ObjectId

- by RayMartinsHair
I am trying to map the ReferralContract.AssessmentId property to Referral.Assessment.Id The below code works but I am sure that there is a cleaner way to do.... Please tell me this is so ;-) // Destination classes public class Referral { public Referral() { Assessment = new Assessment(); } public int Id { get; set; } public Assessment Assessment { get; set; } } public class Assessment { public int Id { get; set; } } // Source Class public class ReferralContract { public int Id { get; set; } public int AssessmentId { get; set; } } The Automapper mapping I am using is Mapper.CreateMap<ReferralContract, Referral>() .ForMember(x => x.Assessment, opt => opt.MapFrom(scr => new Assessment { Id = scr.AssessmentId }));

• Log4Net in App object?

- by David Veeneman
I am getting started with Logging in a WPF desktop app, using Log4Net as the logging component. Here is my question: In a simple desktop app, is there any reason not to instantiate my logger as a property ov the App class (App.xaml.cs), like this? public partial class App : Application { private static readonly ILog p_Logger = LogManager.GetLogger(MethodBase.GetCurrentMethod().DeclaringType); public ILog Logger { get { return p_Logger; } } #endregion } } That would allow me to invoke the logger

• How to access the jQuery event object in a Seaside callback

- by Mef
Basically, I want to translate the following into Seaside Smalltalk: $(".myDiv").bind('click', function(e) { console.log(e); }); Besides that I don't want to console.log the event, but access it in my ajax callback. The most promising approach seemed to be something like html div onClick: (html jQuery ajax callback: [:v | self halt] value: (???); with: 'Foo'. But I couldn't find any way to access the event that caused the callback. Intuitively, I would try html jQuery this event for the ??? part, but the Seaside jQuery wrapper doesn't know any message that comes close to event. Any help is appreciated. There has to be away to access the event data...

• Relational database data explorer / visualization?

- by Ian Boyd
Is there a tool that can let one browse relational data as a graph of connected nodes? For example, i'm faced with trying to cleanse some anomolous data. i can start with two offending rows. In this particular example, the TransactionID should, by business rules, be unique to the table, but i find a transaction that violates that rule: SELECT * FROM LCTTrans WHERE TransactionID = 1075048 LCTID TransactionID ========= ============= 4358 1075048 4359 1075048 2 row(s) affected But really what i want to begin to hunt down all the related data, to try to see which is right. So this hypothetical software would start by showing me these two rows: Next, i want to see that transaction that is linked into this table: Now that transaction points to an MAL, so show me that: Now lets add those two LCTs, that the transaction is "on". A transaction can be on only one LCT, yet this one is pointing to two: Okay computer, both of those LCTs point to an MAL and the transaction that created them, show me those: Those last two transactions, they also point at an MAL, and they themselves point to an LCT, show me those: Okay, now are there any entries in LCTTrans that point to LCTs 4358 or 4359?... And so on, and so on. Now i did all this manually, running single selects, copying and pasting uniqueidentifier keys and converting them into friendly id numbers so i could easily see the relationships. Is there software that can do this?

• Efficient code to avoid circular references in c# object model

- by Kumar
I have an excel like grid where values can be typed referencing other rows To check for circular references when a new value is entered, i traverse the tree and create a list of values referenced thus far, if the current value is found in this list, i return an error thus avoiding a circular reference. This is infrequent enough where extreme performance is not an issue but... Question - is there a better way ? I'm told it's not the most optimal but no answer was provided so on to the experts @ SO :)

• Qt 5.3 OpenGL - vertex buffer object drawing using the core profile

- by user3700881
Im using Qt 5.3 to create a QWindow to do some basic rendering stuff. The QWindow is declared like this: class OpenGLWindow : public QWindow, protected QOpenGLFunctions_3_3_Core { Q_OBJECT ... } It is initialized in the constructor: OpenGLWindow::OpenGLWindow(QWindow *parent) : QWindow(parent) { QSurfaceFormat format; format.setVersion(3,3); format.setProfile(QSurfaceFormat::CoreProfile); this->setSurfaceType(OpenGLSurface); this->setFormat(format); this->create(); _context = new QOpenGLContext; _context->setFormat(format); _context->create(); _context->makeCurrent(this); this->initializeOpenGLFunctions(); ... } And that's the rendering code: void OpenGLWindow::render() { if(!isExposed()) return; _context->makeCurrent(this); glClear(GL_COLOR_BUFFER_BIT); glUseProgram(_shaderProgram); glBindBuffer(GL_ARRAY_BUFFER, _positionBufferObject); glEnableVertexAttribArray(0); glVertexAttribPointer(0, 4, GL_FLOAT, GL_FALSE, 0, 0); glDrawArrays(GL_TRIANGLES, 0, 3); glDisableVertexAttribArray(0); glUseProgram(0); _context->swapBuffers(this); } I am trying to draw a simple triangle using a vertex and fragment shader. The problem is that the triangle is not showing up when the core profile is set. Only when I set the OpenGL version to 2.0 or when I use the compatibility profile, it shows up. From my point of view that doesn't make any sense because I am not using fixed functionality at all. What am I missing?

• Custom QGraphicsItems not compiling and gives "object is private" error

- by bahree
Hi, I am trying to create a Custom QGraphicsItem button as shown by Fred here. The code which he posted can be found here. The problem is when I try and compile the code I get the following two errors: /usr/include/qt4/QtGui/qgraphicsitem.h ‘QGraphicsItem::QGraphicsItem(const QGraphicsItem&)’ is private /usr/include/qt4/QtCore/qobject.h ‘QObject::QObject(const QObject&)’ is private Here is the code snippet which essentially is the same as that in the sample above. The error is on the class deceleration. class MyButton : public QObject, public QGraphicsItem { Q_OBJECT Q_INTERFACES(QGraphicsItem) public: MyButton(QGraphicsItem *parent = 0); MyButton(const QString normal, const QString pressed = "", QGraphicsItem *parent = 0); .... } Interestingly the other sample as shown here works fine. The sample code for that can be found here. Any idea what is wrong? Thanks in advance.

• Object Naming without Hungarian?

- by EdOxH
Mostly because of reading this site, I'm trying to move away from Hungarian Notation. Or I guess the improper (system) Hungarian. I can figure out a better way to name most data types, but I don't know what to do with objects. What would be a good naming convention for objects? I use objRS for recordsets now. Would I just use rs?

• Django model manager didn't work with related object when I do aggregated query

- by Satoru.Logic
Hi, all. I'm having trouble doing an aggregation query on a many-to-many related field. Let's begin with my models: class SortedTagManager(models.Manager): use_for_related_fields = True def get_query_set(self): orig_query_set = super(SortedTagManager, self).get_query_set() # FIXME `used` is wrongly counted return orig_query_set.distinct().annotate( used=models.Count('users')).order_by('-used') class Tag(models.Model): content = models.CharField(max_length=32, unique=True) creator = models.ForeignKey(User, related_name='tags_i_created') users = models.ManyToManyField(User, through='TaggedNote', related_name='tags_i_used') objects_sorted_by_used = SortedTagManager() class TaggedNote(models.Model): """Association table of both (Tag , Note) and (Tag, User)""" note = models.ForeignKey(Note) # Note is what's tagged in my app tag = models.ForeignKey(Tag) tagged_by = models.ForeignKey(User) class Meta: unique_together = (('note', 'tag'),) However, the value of the aggregated field used is only correct when the model is queried directly: for t in Tag.objects.all(): print t.used # this works correctly for t in user.tags_i_used.all(): print t.used #prints n^2 when it should give n Would you please tell me what's wrong with it? Thanks in advance.
