  • How can two instances of an application communicate in Java?

    Hello, I am developing a new Java Desktop app. Something like a media player. I want to load most of the resources in the background when the computer starts up. But the users can turn this option off form within the app or using some other utility. So, what I want to do is if a ban instance of the app is already running and the user starts the app again then I can communicate with the already running instance so that it can launch a new window?

    good morning all :) was wondering if anyone can tell me how come I cant get my windows form size to go to 1280x 768 in vs 2008? My resolution that I am working on is 1024x768..but the computer that I am going to be running this program on is a wide screen..1280x768. I try to change it in properties but it keeps defaulting back to 1036x760.

  • Any tips for how to build a LED system thet will light up to music?

    So basically I would like somehow that given an audio file as input (most likely mp3 or I can use some audio engine that will handle other types too) from my computer to control some LED lights so they will be something like an oscilloscope, like the one in winamp.     Hello! Could you please tell why the Asc() function returns incorrect result? Dim TestChar = Chr(128) Dim CharInt = Asc(TestChar) ' this is a mistake on Windows 7 x64. Asc(TestChar) returns 136 instead of 128 I executed this code on another computer and the result was 128. Thanks.

But the distribution doesn't by default come with the C development environment and I am facing some issues when trying to install the gcc.   • Making one value "special"

    What is the "computer science" term for the practice of assigning a special meaning to one of a type's values. For example a numeric variable called "amount_to_transfer" where the special value "0" means "entire account balance" or a date value "spouse_date_of_birth" where "1/1/1800" means "unmarried". I happen to feel that this is quite a bad "smell", but I'd like to have a name for it, and if possible, some blog post or article about why it's bad and how to fix it.

    A HCS12 microcontroller I had to buy for a class I had recently taken has 40 pins on the back side of it. The class was merely about computer organization, and so unfortunately, we never had a chance to cover all the capabilities of the chip itself. Now that the class is over, I have been thinking about using the to familiarize myself with the assembly language.     I am currently involved in a project which requires me to repeatedly take snapshots of the screen. I am using qt's grabScreen function to do the same. The screen freezes for half a second every time the program takes a snapshot causing the computer to seem to be very slow :( Can anybody suggest me a better method of doing this ?

    I am considering upgrading my work computer to use windows 8 as the new file transferring feature seems very useful. Unfortunately after installing windows 8 on my home pc to test it out, the files are being transferred in separate dialogs as opposed to this image provided by microsoft. As I am transferring files constantly a single transfer dialog would make things much less confusing. Does anyone know what settings to change to make file transfers appear in the same window?
