• 4D - is it any good?

  Recently I found out that the company a friend of mine co-owns uses 4D, which I've never heard of before. They swear by it, but they're non-technical and what they say about it sounds like memorized marketing blurb. Unfortunately the 4D website also seems devoid of any actual information and is filled with words like "comprehensive", "solution", "platform" and "integrated" instead. Since that thing is rather expensive and uses a custom language that I don't have much inclination to learn just for one project, I'm cautious about it and I'm wondering if anyone had any experience with it? Would you recommend it? What is it good for? What competitive advantage would I gain by learning it as a programmer, or using it as a company?

  I am trying to translate this code but I don't understand how to use the GET / PUT part of the code in another language like c++ or c#. What I understand is that the code get a file and then save it with some random data added to make it look different than the original. I don't use vb since years and I don't remember anything about it. Can someone help me porting this snippet to c++ or c#?

• Algorithm of JavaScript "sort()" Function

  Recently when I was working with JavaScript "sort()" function, I found in one of the tutorials that this function does not sort the numbers properly. Instead to sort numbers, a function must be added that compares numbers, like the following code:- <script type="text/javascript"> function sortNumber(a,b) { return a - b; } var n = ["10", "5", "40", "25", "100", "1"]; document.write(n.sort(sortNumber)); </script> The output then comes as:- 1,5,10,25,40,100 Now what I didn't understand is that why is this occurring & can anybody please tell in details as to what type of algorithm is being used in this "sort()" function? This is because for any other language, I didn't find this problem where the function didn't sort the numbers correctly. Any help is greatly appreciated.

While reading up on JavaScript I found it curious that most of the examples I've been drawing on use PHP for such an operation. I know many of you may argue that 'I'm doing it wrong' or 'JavaScript is a client-side language' etc. but the question stands. . .can you write a file in only JavaScript? • What scripts should not be ported from bash to python?

  I decided to rewrite all our Bash scripts in Python (there are not so many of them) as my first Python project. The reason for it is that although being quite fluent in Bash I feel it's somewhat archaic language and since our system is in the first stages of its developments I think switching to Python now will be the right thing to do. Are there scripts that should always be written in Bash? For example, we have an init.d daemon script - is it OK to use Python for it? We run CentOS. Thanks.

• Feed char array into stdin

  I am writing a parser for a mini scripting language. Some of my grammar rules require jumping to a different location in the file to obtain information. There doesn't seem to be a straightforward way to accomplish this. So, I was thinking about loading my data files into a char array array and parsing line by line. This will allow me to jump all over the array with ease. My question is, is it possible to feed char arrays (i.e. char *) into stdin, so I can easily invoke the yyparse() function as needed.

• Why people define class, trait, object inside another object in Scala?

  Ok, I'll explain why I ask this question. I begin to read Lift 2.2 source code these days. In Lift, I found that, define inner class and inner trait are very heavily used. object Menu has 2 inner traits and 4 inner classes. object Loc has 18 inner classes, 5 inner traits, 7 inner objects. There're tons of codes write like this. I wanna to know why the author write it like this. Is it because it's the author's personal taste or a powerful use of language feature?

• .BAT Switches Parsing

  Erm.. I'm working with a switches parsing in BAT files, which goes like this: <commands> -a -b -x -y -z -u abc ...... The user may input a lot of switch, or none. So I used looped shift to make parsing infinite switches possible: :loop IF "%1"=="-a" ... SHIFT GOTO loop But when the script ends, I always get cmd executing the switches and showing up error like '-n' is not recognized as an internal... So, someone got any idea? Thanks a lot... P/S: Make solution sticks with BAT script if possible as using other language may cause dependencies problem as this script is aimed on ANY computer with Windows. Finally, thanks again =) EDIT: Tried shf301 suggestion, i found out that I used DEL %0 to delete itself but it seems the %0 is shifted into the arguments because of the SHIFT command.

• Variable pre-fixes, Visual Studio 2010 onwards?

  I'm a bit bewildered on this subject, as I relate variable prefixes to being a thing of the past now, but with Visual Studio 2010 onwards (I'm currently using 2012), do people still do this and why? I only ask because, these days, you can hover over any variable and it'll tell you the variable type and scope. There's literally no requirement for pre-fixing being there for readability. By this I mean: string strHello int intHello etc. And I'm being language/tool biased here - as Visual Studio takes a lot of the legwork out for you in terms of seeing exactly what type the variable is, including after conversions in the code. This is not a "general programming" question.

• is there any way to get country names from iPhone APIs?

  Hi, I want to provide a picker to the user to select a country. I've had a look in the NSLocale docs and I can get a list of all of the country codes supported on the device, which feels like a start: Code: NSArray *codes = [[NSArray alloc] initWithArray:[NSLocale ISOCountryCodes]]; But I can't work out if there is a programatic way to convert this array into country names... Ideally this list would be localized as well, i.e. show the country name in the user's preferred language. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

  Hi Everyone, I have started learning Objective C with no prior programming experience from the 'Become an X-Coder' eBook (http://download.cocoalab.com.s3.amazonaws.com/BecomeAnXcoder.pdf). My question is, if I want to be doing iPhone development, am I going in the right direction? Am I learning the wrong language, or should I be learning Cocoa Touch?   How would i make use of tags property of a node so that i can get the attributes of an xml node. I have to display an xml tree in a winform and then when i click on any node, its attributes should get displayed on a list box in same window. I want to make use of tags property, but for that i need to convert that tree node in the winform into an xml node. I wanted to store the tree node in the tag and then typecast that tag to an xml node. I dont know how to do it? I am a newbie at C# so there might be some discrpancy in language...please help

• Is it possible to achieve string localization inside of a statically linked lib?

  I am working on building an SDK which will be built out as a statically linked library that third party applications can then drop in to their applications. Inside of this SDK, I was looking to be able to perform some "localization." Basically, I would like for the code in my SDK to be able to access some ".string" files to perform some string lookup and language translation capabilities. Then I could propagate these strings outward to implementing App layers through my exposed API's. Is this even possible? I thought it was but now that I have actually been trying, I am seriously having doubts.

• Having trouble with Flash, Javascript and JQuery

  I'm using JQuery with the JQuery flash plugin (http://jquery.lukelutman.com/plugins/flash/) and trying to send a JS call back to the flash, I keep running into "xxx is not a function" so apparently something is off. I'm new to JQuery and very new to this jquery flash plugin and just can't quite wrap my head around what I am doing wrong. • should a student be diversifying or mastering programming languages?

  As the question states, is it better if a student diversifies or explores when learning programming languages or should they focus only on 2-3 languages and really get to know them well? Example of what I mean by diversifying: Functional -> Scheme Procedural -> C Object Oriented -> Java Dynamic or scripting -> Python Other -> C++ I have a few breaks in between semesters sometimes (up to 3 months) and I'm thinking of either learning a new language or "master" those that I know right now. Which would benefit me in the future? I know some(about 3 months of self studying each) Java, C, and C++ already . If I'm not mistaken, where I live, the industry is heavy on Java, C++, and C#.

• class member access specifiers

  I understand what the typical access specifiers are, and what they mean. 'public' members are accessible anywhere, 'private' members are accessible only by the same class and friends, etc. What I'm wondering is what, if anything, this equates to in lower-level terms. Are their any post-compilation functional differences between these beyond the high-level restrictions (what can access what) imposed by the language (c++ in this case) they're used in. Another way to put it - if this were a perfect world where programmers always made good choices (like not accessing members that may change later and using only well defined members that should stay the same between implementations), would their be any reason to use these things?

• How do I use udev to find info about inserted video media (e.g. DVDs)

  I'm trying to port an application from using HAL to using pure udev. It is written in python and will use the gudev library, though I would love to see examples in any language. I'm able to get all attached video devices (such as cameras) via: import gudev client = gudev.Client(["video4linux"]) for device in client.get_devices(): print device.get_sysfs_attr("name"), device.get_device_name() This prints out something like: USB2.0 UVC WebCam /dev/video0 I am also able to get a list of block devices, but how can I: Tell if it is a CD/DVD drive? Tell if media is currently inserted if the drive supports removable media? Tell what the name/label of the media is (e.g. FUTURAMAS1 for a DVD)? • Find and list all functions/methods in a set of JavaScript files

  Is there a way to read a set of JavaScript files, and output a description of where every function/method is defined? I realize that this is likely impossible in full generality, due to the extreme dynamic nature of the language. What I'm imagining is something which gets the (relatively) straightforward cases. Ideally, I'd want it figure out where, e.g. some method got attached to string or hash or some other fundamental class (and also just let you find all the classes/functions that get defined once in one place). Does such a tool exist?

• .NET security mechanism to restrict access between two Types in the same Website project?

  Question: Is there a mechanism in the .NET Framework to hide one custom Type from another without using separate projects/assemblies? I'm using C# with ASP.NET in a Website project (Note: Not a Web Application). Obviously there's not a way to enforce this restriction using language-specific OO keywords so I am looking for something else, for example: maybe a permission framework or code access mechanism, maybe something that uses meta data like Attributes. I'm unsure. I don't really care whether the solution actually hides classes from each other or just makes them inaccessible, etc. A runtime or design time answer will suffice. Looking for something easy to implement otherwise it's not worth the effort ... Background: I'm working in an ASP.NET Website project and the team has decided not to use separate project assemblies for different software layers. Therefore I'm looking for a way to have, for example, a DataAccess/ folder of which I disallow its classes to access other Types in the ASP.NET Website project.

• How to open a text file that's not in the same folder?

I have a project folder where I have all the .c and .h files and a conf folder under which there is a config.txt file to read. How can I open that? • Omit attribute name from validation error message (at start of it)?

  I write code in English but I'm currently doing a site which is fully translated to another language (validation error messages included). However, I have a problem because validation error messages always seem to include the name of the attribute the error is on at the start of the error, e.g.: Title Prosimo izpolnite naziv fakultete. I want to get rid of the Title at the start, like so: Prosimo izpolnite naziv fakultete. Any help is appreciated. I would rather see if this can be solved without installing any 3rd party plugins. If it's possible to provide translations for attribute names, that would be a cool solution too, but I would still like to know how it can be done both ways (omit or translate).
