• Generating documents with templating from a form

  Hello, I would like to create a document generator with templating. The workflow should be as following: The user input data to a static form (simple text input). The user chooses a graphically designed template. A document with the chosen template containing the user data is generated. The initial templates repository is prepared in advance, but it should be easy to add new templates to the process. I have the full MS Office suite and the preferred file format is an MS .doc. I can do a little VB scripting if needed, but I prefer not to. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thank you, Anna

  I downloaded the latest version of Zend framework, added a controller and I can not get it to load.. • Eclipse CDT setup for remote build

  Is there a better way to setup Eclipse CDT for local editing and remote building? I am working on a C++ project that uses GNU make in Linux. The code is under CVS on a Linux server. When I'm in the lab, I use Eclipse CDT on a Linux-x64 PC. The project is built on a Linux-x86 PC. All the computers in the lab (including the CVS server) have NFS mounts. When I'm at home, I use Eclipse CDT on a Windows 7 PC. The Windows PC connects to the Linux CVS server via SSH tunnel. To edit source, I rsync the C++ project under the Linux Eclipse workspace back to my Windows Eclipse workspace. (I can also do a remote CVS checkout on the Windows PC.) To build from home, I use a custom build command that SSH's to the Linux-x86 PC, rsync's the C++ project from my Windows Eclipse workspace to my Linux Eclipse workspace, and then runs make on the Liunx-x86 PC, specifying the correct path for the Makefile. In order to go back and forth between lab and home without committing my changes to CVS every time, I use rsync. When I transition from lab to home, I rsync sources to my Windows Eclipse workspace. When I build from home, the sources get rsync'd back to the Linux Eclipse workspace. Is there a better, less wonky way to do this? (I'm NOT interested in remote debugging.)

• When are Bold/Italic Fonts Used in Windows?

  Environment: Windows 7, MS Office 2007, OpenOffice In the Control Panel-Fonts section, there are a number of fonts available, sometimes as families. For example, the Arial family (double click on it) shows both Arial and Arial Narrow. The Arial one has a few different versions, like "Arial Bold" and "Arial Bold Italic" and "Arial Italic". The Cambria font is the similar. When, if at all, are these Bold, Italic, etc. versions of these fonts ever used? In MS Office and OpenOffice they they are not available to choose from. Any insights on if I even need to keep them on my system at all?

• Can GoogleApps exist with Exchange 2003

  I am looking at the next step in our Groupware solutions. Rather got with a conventional add a new MS Server/MS Exchange to allow for growth and expanding offices. Could an Office operate with both an existing Exchange server setup and migrate a portion of mailboxes to the GoogleApps platform? I want to see if the we could use the GoogleApps for managers and larger mailboxes, and leave a large amount of small mailboxes on the existing hardware that is configured for Exchange/outlook? Can the two co-exist in an longterm configuration, where they can 'play nice' together? Is there any options that would allow for for this and would this have limitations? Such as the Free/busy connectors (Calendaring)? Is there any pitfalls for this type of design? Thanks

• MySQL query pulling from two tables, display in correct fields

"</a>"; }; As you can see, my tables are "projects", and "links" Each is sharing a common field "id" for reference. It looks as though where both links.id and project.id are equal, it outputs anything, but when there is no links.id associated with a given $clientID the container relative to the $clientID doesn't display at all. Essentially I'm using this to add links dynamically to a specific client in this CMS and if there are no links, I want the container to show up anyway. Hopefully I've expressed myself clearly, any pointers in the right direction are appreciated. Thanks!

• evaluating cost/benefits of using extension methods in C# => 3.0

  Hi, In what circumstances (usage scenarios) would you choose to write an extension rather than sub-classing an object ? < full disclosure : I am not an MS employee; I do not know Mitsu Furota personally; I do know the author of the open-source Componax library mentioned here, but I have no business dealings with him whatsoever; I am not creating, or planning to create any commercial product using extensions : in sum : this post is from pure intellectal curiousity related to my trying to (continually) become aware of "best practices" I find the idea of extension methods "cool," and obviously you can do "far-out" things with them as in the many examples you can in Mitsu Furota's (MS) blog postslink text. A personal friend wrote the open-source Componax librarylink text, and there's some remarkable facilities in there; but he is in complete command of his small company with total control over code guidelines, and every line of code "passes through his hands." While this is speculation on my part : I think/guess other issues might come into play in a medium-to-large software team situation re use of Extensions. Looking at MS's guidelines at link text, you find : In general, you will probably be calling extension methods far more often than implementing your own. ... In general, we recommend that you implement extension methods sparingly and only when you have to. Whenever possible, client code that must extend an existing type should do so by creating a new type derived from the existing type. For more information, see Inheritance (C# Programming Guide). ... When the compiler encounters a method invocation, it first looks for a match in the type's instance methods. If no match is found, it will search for any extension methods that are defined for the type, and bind to the first extension method that it finds. And at Ms's link text : Extension methods present no specific security vulnerabilities. They can never be used to impersonate existing methods on a type, because all name collisions are resolved in favor of the instance or static method defined by the type itself. Extension methods cannot access any private data in the extended class. Factors that seem obvious to me would include : I assume you would not write an extension unless you expected it be used very generally and very frequently. On the other hand : couldn't you say the same thing about sub-classing ? Knowing we can compile them into a seperate dll, and add the compiled dll, and reference it, and then use the extensions : is "cool," but does that "balance out" the cost inherent in the compiler first having to check to see if instance methods are defined as described above. Or the cost, in case of a "name clash," of using the Static invocation methods to make sure your extension is invoked rather than the instance definition ? How frequent use of Extensions would affect run-time performance or memory use : I have no idea. So, I'd appreciate your thoughts, or knowing about how/when you do, or don't do, use Extensions, compared to sub-classing. thanks, Bill

• Twitter 2 for Android crash every time I try uploading multi photos [closed]

  Hello, I'm using the new Twitter 2 on Android 2.1. Whenever I hit the button which enables me to upload multiple photos in a single tweet, I always get the error "The application Camera (process com.sonyericsson.camera) has stopped unexpectidly. Please try again". However, uploading a single photo using the camera button in Twitter have no problem, it works. My phone is Sony Ericsson x10 mini pro. I tried signing out and back in, same result. Anything I can do to fix this? • How to bundle extension methods requiring configuration in a library

  Hi, I would like to develop a library that I can re-use to add various methods involved in navigating/searching through a graph (nodes/relationships, or if you like vertexs/edges). The generic requirements would be: There are existing classes in the main project that already implement the equivalent of the graph class (which contains the lists of nodes / relationships), node class and relationship class (which links nodes together) - the main project likely already has persistence mechanisms for the info (e.g. these classes might be built using Entity Framework for persistance) Methods would need to be added to each of these 3 classes: (a) graph class - methods like "search all nodes", (b) node class - methods such as "find all children to depth i", c) relationship class - methods like "return relationship type", "get parent node", "get child node". I assume there would be a need to inform the library with the extending methods the class names for the graph/node/relationships table (as different project might use different names). To some extent it would need to be like how a generics collection works (where you pass the classes to the collection so it knows what they are). Need to be a way to inform the library of which node property to use for equality checks perhaps (e.g. if it were a graph of webpages the equality field to use might be the URI path) I'm assuming that using abstract base classes wouldn't really work as this would tie usage down to have to use the same persistence approach, and same class names etc. Whereas really I want to be able to, for a project that has "graph-like" characteristics, the ability to add graph searching/walking methods to it.

• What can cause peaks in pagetables in /proc/meminfo ?

  I have a gameserver running Debian Lenny on a VPS host. Even when experiencing a fairly low load, the players start experiencing major lag (ping times rise from 50 ms to 150-500 ms) in bursts of 3 - 10 seconds. I have installed Munin server monitoring, but when looking at the graphs it looks like the server has plenty of CPU, RAM and bandwidth available. The only weird thing I noticed is some peaks in the memory graph attributed to "page_tables" which maps to PageTables in /proc/meminfo but I can't find any good information on what this might mean. Any ideas what might be causing this? If you need any more graps, just let me know. The interrupts/second count is at roughly 400-600 during this period (nearly all from eth0). The drop in committed was caused by me trying to lower the allocated memory for the server from 512MB to 256MB, but that didn't seem to help.

• Refreshing WEB-INF/lib in Google App Engine (with Eclipse)

  Hi, I've created a new Google App Engine project within Eclipse. I copied several JARs that I need for my application into the WEB-INF/lib directory, and add them to the build path. I make some random calls to these JARs from within the handler, deploy, and everything works fine. However, if I then change one of the JARs outside the project, and copy the new version to WEB-INF/lib (with the same name) and re-deploy, it doesn't seem to be sending the new JAR; everything is still linking to the old one even though it's not even in my WEB-INF/lib anymore. I'm guessing it's being cached by the server or Eclipse is not even realizing something has changed in order to upload the new version. If I just create a new project with the new JAR, everything is fine again (until I have to make another change...) but of course I don't want to have to create a new project for every change to a dependency I make. My question is, how can I make GAE re-upload all the JARs I have from within Eclipse? Thanks in advance, guys :) -Adrian

• How do I create a dynamic data transfer object dynamically from ADO.net model

  I have a pretty simple database with 5 tables, PK's and relationships setup, etc. I also have an ASP.net MVC3 project I'm using to create simple web services to feed JSON/XML to a mobile app using post/get. To access my data I'm using an ADO.net entity model class to handle generation of the entities, etc. Due to issues with serialization/circular references created by the auto-generated relations from ADO.net entity model, I've been forced to create "Data transfer objects" to strip out the relations and data that doesn't need to be transferred. Question 1: is there an easier way to create DTOs using the entity framework itself? IE, specify only the entity properties I want to convert to Jsonresults? I don't wish to use any 3rd party frameworks if I can help it. Question 2: A side question for Entity Framework, say I create an ADO.net entity model in one project within a solution. Because that model relies on the connection to the database specified in project A, can project B somehow use that model with a similar connection? Both projects are in the same solution. Thanks!

• What is this "Change to Display" of math equations and why does it change the equation style in Word 2010?

  I am writing an equation with the "new" Equation Editor in MS Word 2010 (Insert - Equation). When using one of the "large operators", for example the Sigma, with lower and upper limits, there are two styles for displaying the limits - below and above the Sigma, or to the right as super/subscripts. I am choosing the first style - limits above and below to get the standard notation, but Word formats the equation the other way. Now, the object has a bounding box with a context menu on its right. In this menu, I can select Change to Display and the equation is moved to a new line, w/o adjacent text - but, now the sigma limits appear as requested!   Hello All, I am wanting to rewrite a url like: http://my.project/mydomain.com/ANY_NUMBER_OF_CATEGORIES/designer/4/designer-name/page.html to this: http://my.projects/mydomain.com/ANY_NUMBER_OF_CATEGORIES/page.html?designer=4 I would like to use mod-rewrite to accomplish this. Things to note: Any number of categories can be between 'mydomain.com/' and '/designer'. For instance the url could be http://my.project/mydomain.com/designer/4/designer-name/page.html or it could be http://my.project/mydomain.com/tops/shirts/small/designer/4/designer-name/page.html A query string may be provided in the original url that needs to be preserved in the rewritten url. For example url provided could be: http://my.project/mydomain.com/designer/4/designer-name/page.html?color=red&type=shirt Given the url above the resulting url would need to be: http://my.projects/mydomain.com/page.html?designer=4&color=red&type=shirt The order of the query string does not matter. The 'designer=4' part could come before or after the rest of the query string. I'm new to .htaccess and re-writes so any examples and or explanations would be greatly appreciated. • Docs for auto-generated methods in Ruby on Rails

  Rails has all sorts of auto-generated methods that I've often times struggled to find documentation for. For example, in routes.rb, if I have: map.resources :projects do |p| p.resources :tasks end This will get a plethora of auto-generate path and url helpers. Where can I find documentation for how to work with these paths? I generally understand how to work with them, but more explicit docs might help me understand some of the magic that happens behind the scenes. # compare project_path(@project) project_task_path(@project, @task) # to project_path(:id => @project.id) project_task_path(:project_id => @project.id, :id => @task.id) Also, when I change an attribute on a model, @post.foo_changed? will be true. Where can I find documentation for this and all other magical methods that are created like this? If the magic is there, I'd love to take advantage of it. And finally: Is there a complete resource for config.___ statements for environment.rb? I was able to find docs for Configuration#gem but what attributes can I set within the stubs like config.active_record.___, config.action_mailer.___, config.action_controller.___, etc. Again, I'm looking for a complete resource here, not just a settings for the examples I provided. Even if you can only answer one of these questions, please chime in. These things seem to have been hiding from me and it's my goal to get them some more exposure, so I'll be upvoting all links to docs that point me to what I'm looking for. • Specifying both multiple targets and multiple build files with ant or subant in 1.6

  I'm trying to unify a build process, running one build to get multiple packages. My first shot at this is just having a central build script call <ant or <subant on each project's build.xml file. I'm using Ant 1.6, and I've run into a funny problem: either I use the <ant task, and I can specify multiple targets but not multiple build files, or I use the <subant task, and I can specify multiple build files but not multiple targets. I realize there's a few solutions here already: Just upgrade to Ant 1.7 already; <antcall can do multiple targets there. Edit the separate project build files to have a variety of top-level targets, so I can call each individual file with just one target, and use <antcall. Copy-paste a lot of <ant tasks, with a little help from <macrodef to help the sanity. Is there something I've missed, that will allow me to do what I want from this single central build.xml without a) editing individual project files, b) writing lots of repetitive code, or c) upgrading Ant, and that d) doesn't require editing every time I add a new project?

• Using StructureMap to create classes by a name?

  How can I use StructureMap to resolve to an appropriate implementation of an interface based on a name stored in an attribute? In my project, I have many different kinds of widgets, each descending from IWidget, and each decorated with an attribute specifying the kind of associated element. To illustrate: [Configuration("header")] public class HeaderWidget : IWidget { } [Configuration("linegraph")] public class LineGraphWidget : IWidget { } When processing my (XML) configuration file, I want to obtain an instance of the appropriate concrete class based on the name of the element I'm processing. public IWidget CreateWidget(XElement definition) { var kind = definition.Name.LocalName; var widget = // What goes here? widget.Configure(definition); return widget; } Each definition should result in a different widget being created - I don't need or want the instances to be shared. In the past I've written plenty of code to do this kind of thing manually, including writing a custom "roll-your-own" IoC container for one project. However, one of my goals with this project is to become proficient with StructureMap instead of reinventing the wheel. I think I've already managed to set up automatic scanning of assemblies so that StructureMap knows about all my IWidget implementations: public class WidgetRegistration : Registry { public WidgetRegistration() { Scan( scanner => { scanner.AssembliesFromApplicationBaseDirectory(); scanner.AddAllTypesOf<IWidget>(); }); } } However, this isn't registering the names of my widgets with StructureMap. What do I need to add to make my scenario work? (While I am trying to use StructureMap in this project, an answer showing me how to solve this problem with a different DI/IoC tool would still be valuable.)

• Code Coverage tool for BlackBerry

  I'm looking for a code coverage tool that I can use with a BlackBerry application. I'm using J2ME-Unit for Unit Testing and I want to see how much of my code is being covered by my tests. I've tried using Cobertura for J2ME but after days of wrestling with it I failed to get any results from it. (I believe that the instrumentation is un-done by the RAPC compilation). And despite this message, the project seems to be dead. I've looked at JInjector but the project seems very incomplete. There is little (if any) documentation and although it claims to be able to work with BlackBerry projects, I haven't seen any places where it has been used for that purpose. I've played with the project quite a bit but to no avail. I've also tried the "Coverage" view in the BlackBerry JDE, even though I use Eclipse for development. The view stays permanently blank, regardless of clicking "Refresh" and running the application from the JDE. I've looked at most of the tools on this SO thread, but they won't work with J2ME/BlackBerry projects. Has anyone had any success with any code coverage tools on the BlackBerry? If so, what tools have you used? How have you used them? If anyone has managed to get JInjector or Cobertura for J2ME to work with a BlackBerry project, what did you have to do to get it working?

• best practice to persist classes model

  My application contains a set of model classes. e.g. Person, Department... The user changes values for instances of these classes in the UI and the classes are persisted to my "project" file. Next time the user can open and edit the project. Next version of my product may change the model classes drastically. It will still need to open existing projects files (I will know how to handle missing data). How is it best to persist my model classes to the project file? The easiest way to persist classes is Data contract serialization. However it will fail on breaking changes (I expect to have such). How to handle this? use some other persistence, e.g. name-value collection or db which is more tolerance ship a "project converter" application to migrate old projects. This requires to either ship with both old and new models or to manipulate xml, which is best?

• Windows 8, NVIDIA graphics recognition fails

  I just installed Windows 8 Pro OEM 64-bit (clean install) and it won't properly recognize my graphics adapter. When I installed Win8, it automatically installed the BasicDisplay.sys driver dated 6/21/2006. 6.2.9200.16384 (win8_rtm.120725-1247). Hardware - Mobo:MSi G41M-P33 Combo CPU:Intel CoreDuo 6600 Graphics:NVIDIA GeForce 9400GT *OS* - Windows 8 Pro 64-bit OEM The graphics adapter worked fine in Windows XP. The PC is a generic box, bought locally and its mobo failed recently, so I replaced it with the G41M. Microsoft wouldn't let me re-activate Windows XP with a different mobo, so I installed Win8, which appears to work except as described next. Win8 only partially recognizes the graphics adapter and won't allow NVIDIA latest driver installer to see that it's an NVIDIA card. As a result, OpenGL doesn't work, and this is needed by the software I most use. Other than that the graphics look OK. When I say 'partially recognizes', I mean that via the Control Panel, I can see that the adapter is described as NVIDIA, but the driver remains stuck at Microsoft Basic Display Adapter no matter what I try, including "Update driver..." in adapter properties. Display Screen Resolution Advanced Settings Adapter shows: Adapter Type: Microsoft Basic Display Adapter Chip Type: NVIDIA DAC Type: NVIDIA Corporation Bios Information: G27 Board - p381n17 Don't know what this means ... no mention of 9400GT Total Available Graphics Memory: 256 MB Dedicated Video Memory: 0 MB In fact the adapter has 512MB on-board video memory. System Video Memory: 0 MB Shared System Memory: 256 MB And Control Panel Device Manager Display adapters just shows Microsoft Basic Display Adapter. No other graphics adapter, and no unknown device or yellow question mark. What I have tried so far: 1. Cleared CMOS and reset. Updated BIOS and all mobo drivers as follows: 1st I used Driver Reviver to see if any driver updates were required. It found some but I didn't use that to get the drivers. Then I switched to MSi's own mobo driver utility Live Update 5. This also showed the board needed to update several so I used it to fetch the new drivers. After that it showed that everything was up to date and I checked with Driver Reviver again, which also reported no drivers now needed updating. Rebooted. Went to the NVIDIA site to get the latest graphics adapter driver. Their auto-detect "Option 2: Automatically find drivers for my NVIDIA products" said "The NVIDIA Smart Scan was unable to evaluate your system hardware. Please use Option 1 to manually find drivers for your NVIDIA products." So I downloaded 310.70-desktop-win8-win7-winvista-64bit-international-whql.exe, which lists 9400 GT under supported products, but when I run it, it says: "NVIDIA Installer cannot continue This graphics driver could not find compatible graphics hardware." Connected the display to the on-board Intel graphics (G41 Intel Express), removed the NVIDIA card and rebooted, changed to internal graphics in CMOS. Again it installs the MS Basic Display Adapter, and can't properly run my s/w that needs OpenGL. It runs on other machines with Intel Express graphics (WinXP and 7) Shut down and pulled out the power cord. Held start button to discharge all capacitors. Removed and re-inserted NVIDIA adapter in PCI-E slot and made sure properly seated. Connected the monitor to the card, screwed plug to socket. Reconnected power cord. Started and checked in BIOS that Primary Graphics Adapter was set to PCI-E. Started Windows. Uninstalled MS Basic Display Adapter in Device Manager. Screen blanks briefly, reappears. No Graphics adapter entry was then visible in Device Manager. Restarted PC. MS Basic Display Adapter Visible again in Device Manager. Clicked in Device Manager View Show hidden devices. No other graphics adapter appears, no unknown devices. Rebooted. Tried Scan for Hardware changes. None detected. Tried right-click on MS Basic Display Adapter Properties Driver Update Driver... Search automatically. It replied that it had determined driver was up to date. I checked that there were no graphic driver-related entries in Programs and Features that I could delete (none). Searched for any other drivers with nvidia in their name and deleted them, just keeping the 306.97 installer exe file. Did a Windows Update. Ran GPU-Z which shows (main items): Microsoft Basic Display Adapter GPU G72 BIOS 5.72.22.76.88 Device ID 10DE - 01D5 DDR2 Bus Width 32 Bit Memory size 64MB Driver Version nvlddmkm 6.2.9200.16384 (ForceWare 0.00) / Win8 64 NVIDIA SLI Unknown in the drop-down at the foot, "Microsoft Basic Display Adapter" is the only option If I swap hard disks in that machine to one with a Ubuntu 10.4 installation (originally installed on the same PC), lspci shows "VGA compatible controller as NVIDIA Corporation Device 01d5 (rev a1) (prog-if 00 [VGA controller])" and "kernel driver in use: nvidia" I'm out of ideas for new things to try and would be really grateful of suggestions. • Visual Studio hangs when deploying a cube

  Hello All, I'm having an issue with an Analysis Services project in Visual Studio 2005. My project always builds but only occasionally deploys. No errors are reported and VS just hangs. This is my first Analysis Services project so I am hoping that there is something obvious that I am just missing. Here is the situation I have a cube that I have successfully deployed. I then make some change, e.g., adding a hierarchy to a dimension. When I try to deploy again VS hangs. I have to restart Analysis Services to regain control of VS so I can shut it down. I restart everything sometimes once, sometimes twice or more before the project will eventually deploy. This happens with any change I make there seems to be no pattern to this behaviour. Sometimes I have to delete the cube from Analysis Services before restarting everything to get a successful deploy. Also I have successfully deployed the cube, and then subsequently successfully reprocessed a dimension then when I open a query window in SQL Server Management Studio it says that it can find any cubes. As a test I have deployed a cube successfully. I have then deleted it in Analysis Services and attempted to redeploy it, without making any changes to the cube, only to have the same behaviour mentioned above. VS just hangs with no reason so I have no idea where to start hunting down the problem. It is taking 15-20 minutes to make a change as simple as setting the NameColumn of a dimension attribute. As you can imagine this is taking hours of my time so I would greatly appreciate any assistance anyone can give me.
