  • How to avoid loop limitation in a openvz container?

    On a openVZ containing Deb7 I need to lock the maximum size of a folder, which is used to upload on a php based web server. The directory is synced, so I have to lock the maxsize. MAXSIZE should be upgradable by adding some physical disk later ... I want to use a file as a block device for a file system. So I have done : dd if=/dev/zero of=/disk2/filesystem.dat bs=1M count=100 Then, I made the filesystem on it mkfs.ext4 filesystem.dat Then I tried to mount it : mkdir /opt/filesystem ; mount /disk2/filesystem.dat /opt/filesystem My OpenVZ (it is on a VPS) has no loop module in the kernerl. So I got Could not find any loop device as usual under OpenVz So i think I have to use FUSE, but I really do not know HOW .... Any idea on locking the size of directory under OpenVZ ?

    I'm looking at the possibility of using Android as a secure corporate mobile platform. One of the pre-requisites for this will be a way of managing multiple devices, security policies, software deployment, that sort of thing - essentially the things the BlackBerry Enterprise Server handles for BlackBerry or MDM (or something 3rd party like SOTI) handles for Windows Mobile. Does such a thing exist for Android? It's a platform we're interested in but without this right now (and we're not in a position to build it ourselves) it's a non-starter.

    With Windows 8 Storage Spaces, you can lump many hard disks of varying types, speeds and sizes together to use as a single storage space / logical drive. How does Windows decide what to place where? For example will it move files about depending on frequency of access? Maybe splitting files frequently accessed together between hard disks etc. What does it optimize for? Speed, reliability, etc? If the above is asking too much, can I easily see where the files are physically (on which physical disk)?

    Hi, I would like to have some rotating sequential images on my home page of my website. I do not know how to do this and have found code on the internet for only displaying random images. The main problem is this. Every time the page loads I get a pop-up "to help protect your security, IE has restricted this webpage from running scripts or ActiveX controls that could access your computer". Please can someone help prehaps with an example to enable this to work without this pop-up Thanks Richard

    Does the original data type of the username string in a call to FormsAuthentication.SetAuthCookie(...) make any difference with regards to security or code maintainability? As I understand it, the cookie is encrypted and used to identify a user on each request. I'm curious whether it should affect the design of the primary key on my Users table in my database, eg. Guid vs int or a unique username string.

    i use FreeNAS server which is built on OS version FreeBSD 8.2-RELEASE-p6. I use ZFS file system with 13TB HDD on my 8GB physical ram installed box. It almost uses all of RAM installed while proccessing some request. However, it still uses same amount of memory on idle times. So this is becoming a problem sometimes. On my centos web server; i use following command to drop cached memory with a cronjob; sync; echo 3 > /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches However, this command does not work on my Freenas server. How can i drop cached memory on my FreeNAS box which is built on FreeBSD 8.2 Thank you

    Let's assume the following: I have an IIS web site set up IIS is configured to use Digest authentication I'm running an ASP.NET page The page has a code-behing assembly that overrides Page_Load When a user navigates to that page, I get a security prompt for the username and password. If the username and password are invalid (i.e. incorrect password) is there a way for the called page, in Page_Load to know, or does IIS handle this and return the 401 before the ASP.NET engine ever gets around to resolving the actual Page class that will get executed?

    I have one physical server that runs: an Apache (httpd) server another web server (let's say Tomcat for sake of argument) on port 1234 Can I configure the Apache server to act as a proxy for SSL traffic, while keeping the application server blissfully unaware of SSL? What I imagine is: Traffic to http://myserevr.com/app is redirected to https://myserver.com/app Traffic to https://myserver.com/app is proxied to the application server. My SSL certificate is only installed on the Apache server, not on the Application server Other traffic to the Apache server (http://myserver.com/anotherapp) is served directly from the Apache server What's the best setup to achieve this? (On Ubuntu, if that matters)

    Hi all, I'm going to use the free (non gui) version of Hyper-V R2. In my new server I have 8 disks in total (for Hyper-V R2 installation and virtual machine). Atm I'm going to run a single virtual machine, with following tasks: Windows Server 2008 R2 x64 File/Print SQL Server My question is ... with my 8 disks in the server, which disks should contain wich data? Should I install "Hyper-V R2" and VM's drive c on same physical disks? Should I use raid 1 or 5? With the above tasks, how would you structure the disks?     I'm going on a long flight tomorrow, and would like to be able to use my laptop during the journey. Wireless devices like WiFi and bluetooth interfere with airplanes instruments, and shouldn't be used on flights. If my laptop does not have a physical rf-kill switch, is it sufficient to just ensure that the relevant modules do not get loaded? If so, is that always safe, or does it vary between different hardware? My particular situation, is a Samsung NC10 netbook. Atheros 5k wireless hardware. Debian sid with kernel 2.6.30-1-686. However, I think it'd be interesting to know the answer to this question for the general case; not just my specific case.

    Hi everybody, I've recently started using FDT, for a while I was using FlashDevelop, it had a really handy feature in Compiler options where you can set UseNetworkServices to false which would stop the compiled swf from connecting to the internet and became very useful for running standalone flash apps without security warnings when loading in an external xml file etc. Does anybody know if FDT has a similar function? If there isn't a way, then no worries, I can compile the project in Flash Develop, however it would be best if I can do it from FDT. Cheers guys, Will

  • Hyper-V share a folder between host and instance

    I have a hyper-v server and several VM's (Virtual Machines). All the VM's are connected to an external network. I have tried to share a folder on the host and connect via the VM, I can do this but I'm prompted for a user name and password (as you would expect). I do not want to enable the "Everyone" group permissions as the physical host server is on a network of other servers. I have created a new virtual internal network in Hyper-V and given it's adapter a static ip of 33.0.0.100. I have added the virtual adapter to one of the VM's and set to IP to 33.0.0.2 (as advised here). Again this seems to work but I'm still prompted for a user name and password. Am I on the right lines here? I just want to share a directory from the host to the vm's without exposing the share to other servers on the network.

Many forums says its not good to keep a higher value (security issues) but I don't want to consider that right now.   • LVM incorrectly reported missing after power failure

    We have had a major power failure in the data-center. We are using a set of servers for our storage needs. The main server has several pairs of disks mirrored with mdadm. The resulting /dev/mdX are LVM physical volumes and belong to a big volume-group with all our data. After the powerloss, we had the problem that one of the mdadm devices was not auto-detected due to a missing entry in mdadm.conf. As a consequence, the volumegroup had inactive logical volumes due to the missing PV. We were able to fix the mdadm config and reboot. pvscan shows all expected PVs but one LV still does not come up. vgdisplay shows: [...] Cur PV: 3 Act PV: 2 [...] Neither vgscan nor pvscan show any missing devices. What went wrong? How can we force LVM to activate all PVs?

  • How to make a backup VPN server?

    I have a small VPN network with a bunch of clients working mostly with each other and a VPN server. Everything works fine, except, obviously I can't shut VPN server down without breaking the network. I have a spare machine, which worked as an VPN server for the same network before so it is signed with the same SA as the first one and basically configured just the same as the first one. Technically I can make my clients work with it with little adjustment (by setting remote in etc/openpvn/clientx.conf), but it would be great make this switch automated. So basically I want two VPN servers running in the same network to work completely interchangeable without clients even knowing this. Can I do this with VPN or should I dig deeper into physical network layer?

  • Cannot ping a VM from a Hyper-V host

    I am facing a weird situation in my network environment. My infrastructure looks like this: I have a D-LINK DIR-635 acting as my default gateway (192.168.0.1) A physical Windows 2012 Server (192.168.0.10) with the following roles: DHCP, DNS, AD DS and Hyper-V. A virtual Windows 2012 Server (192.168.0.50) which I intent to use as an IIS server (Role is not deployed yet). My virtual machine was able to get an IP address from the DHCP server and is working perfectly (I can ping the default gateway [by IP, FQDN or DNS Alias], the Hyper-V host and any site on the Internet (CNN.com for example). However I cannot ping the VM from my host. It says: Request Timed Out. Do you guys know what I might be doing wrong? Any support is appreciated! Thanks!

    Hi All, I am new to web development, and trying to get a hold on security issues. I went through this article on http://guides.rubyonrails.org/security.html these are some of the steps the author has mentioned how an attacker fixes session. 1. The attacker creates a valid session id: He loads the login page of the web application where he wants to fix the session, and takes the session id in the cookie from the response (see number 1 and 2 in the image). 2. He possibly maintains the session. Expiring sessions, for example every 20 minutes, greatly reduces the time-frame for attack. Therefore he accesses the web application from time to time in order to keep the session alive. 3. Now the attacker will force the user’s browser into using this session id (see number 3 in the image). As you may not change a cookie of another domain (because of the same origin policy), the attacker has to run a JavaScript from the domain of the target web application. Injecting the JavaScript code into the application by XSS accomplishes this attack. Here is an example: <script>?document.cookie="_session_id=16d5b78abb28e3d6206b60f22a03c8d9";?</script>. Read more about XSS and injection later on. 4. The attacker lures the victim to the infected page with the JavaScript code. By viewing the page, the victim’s browser will change the session id to the trap session id. 5. As the new trap session is unused, the web application will require the user to authenticate. 6. From now on, the victim and the attacker will co-use the web application with the same session: The session became valid and the victim didn’t notice the attack. I dont understand couple of points. i) why is user made to login in step5, since session is sent through. ii) I saw possible solutions on wiki, like user properties check and others why cant we just reset the session for the user whoever is login in when they enter username and password in step5?   • How can I set clean urls (enable rewrite) if I don't have a domain ?

    In order to enable clean urls in Drupal, I add the lines below to the lighttpd configuration file. However I'm now working on a local server and I don't have a domain available. So I need to work with this address http://local.ip/Sites/mywebsite I've tried to replace ["host"] with ["socket"] and replace the domain with ip and subfolders (see address above), but unsuccessfully.
