• HttpPost works in Java project, not in Android

  I've written some code for my Android device to login to a web site over https and parse some data out of the resulting pages. An HttpGet happens first to get some info needed for login, then an HttpPost to do the actual login process. When run with the above Jar files I get the 302 redirect, however if I run the exact same code from an Android project with the 1.6 Android Jar file on the build path I get the 200 response from the server. I get the same 200 response when running the code on my 2.2 device. My android application has internet permissions, and the HttpGet works fine. I'm assuming that the problem lies in the fact that HttpPost (or some other class) is different in some significant way between the Android Jar version and the newer Apache versions. I've tried adding the Apache libraries to the build path of the Android project, but due to the duplicate classes I get messages like: INFO/dalvikvm(390): DexOpt: not resolving ambiguous class 'Lorg/apache/http/impl/client/DefaultHttpClient;' in the log. I've also tried using a MultipartEntity instead of the UrlEncodedFormEntity but I get the same 200 result. So, I have a few questions: - Can I force the code running under android to use the newer Apache libraries in preference to the Android versions? - If not, does anyone have any ideas how can I alter my code so that it works with the Android Jar? - Are there any other, totally different approaches to doing an HttpPost in Android? - Any other ideas? I've read a lot of posts and code but I'm not getting anywhere. I've been stuck on this for a couple of days and I'm at a loss how to get the thing to work, so I'll try anything at this point. • Logging with log4j on tomcat jruby-rack for a Rails 3 application

  I just spent the better part of 3 hours trying to get my Rails application logging with Log4j. I've finally got it working, but I'm not sure if what I did is correct. I tried various methods to no avail until my various last attempt. So I'm really looking for some validation here, perhaps some pointers and tips as well -- anything would be appreciated to be honest. I've summarized all my feeble methods into three attempts below. I'm hoping for some enlightenment on where I went wrong with each attempt -- even if it means I get ripped up. Thanks for the help in advance! System Specs Rails 3.0 Windows Server 2008 Log4j 1.2 Tomact 6.0.29 Java 6 Attempt 1 - Configured Tomcat to Use Log4J I basically followed the guide on the Apache Tomcat website here. The steps are: Create a log4j.properties file in $CATALINA_HOME/lib Download and copy the log4j-x.y.z.jar into $CATALINA_HOME/lib Replace $CATALINA_HOME/bin/tomcat-juli.jar with the tomcat-juli.jar from the Apache Tomcat Extras folder Copy tomcat-juli-adapters.jar from the Apache Tomcat Extras folder into $CATALINA_HOME/lib Delete $CATALINA_BASE/conf/logging.properties Start Tomcat (as a service) Expected Results According to the Guide I should have seen a tomcat.log file in my $CATALINA_BASE/logs folder. Actual Results No tomcat.log Saw three of the standard logs instead jakarta_service_20101231.log stderr_20101231.log stdout_20101231.log Question Shouldn't I have at least seen a tomcat.log file? Attempt 2 - Use default Tomcat logging (commons-logging) Reverted all the changes from the previous setup Modified $CATALINA_BASE/conf/logging.properties by doing the following: Adding a setting for my application in the handlers line: 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler Adding Handler specific properties 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler.level = FINE 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler.directory = ${catalina.base}/logs 5rails3.org.apache.juli.FileHandler.prefix = rails3. Adding Facility specific properties org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/rails3].level = INFO org.apache.catalina.core.ContainerBase.[Catalina].[localhost].[/rails3].handlers = 4host-manager.org.apache.juli.FileHandler Modified my web.xml by adding the following context parameter as per the Logging section of the jruby-rack readme (I also modified my warbler.rb accordingly, but I did opted to change the web.xml directly to test things faster). <context-param> <param-name>jruby.rack.logging</param-name> <param-value>commons_logging</param-value> </context-param> Restarted Tomcat Results A log file was created (rails3.log), however there was no log information in the file. Attempt 2A - Use Log4j with existing set up I decided to go Log4j another whirl with this new web.xml setting. Copied the log4j.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder Created a log4j.properties file and put it into WEB-INF/classes log4j.rootLogger=INFO, R log4j.logger.javax.servlet=DEBUG log4j.appender.R=org.apache.log4j.RollingFileAppender log4j.appender.R.File=${catalina.base}/logs/rails3.log log4j.appender.R.MaxFileSize=5036KB log4j.appender.R.MaxBackupIndex=4 log4j.appender.R.layout=org.apache.log4j.PatternLayout log4j.appender.R.layout.ConversionPattern=%d{dd MMM yyyy HH:mm:ss} [%t] %-5p %c %x - %m%n Restarted Tomcat Results Same as Attempt 2 NOTE: I used log4j.logger.javax.servlet=DEBUG because I read in the jruby-rack README that all logging output is automatically redirected to the javax.servlet.ServletContext#log method. So I though this would capture it. I was obviously wrong. Question Why didn't this work? Isn't Log4J using the commons_logging API? Attempt 3 - Tried out slf4j (WORKED) A bit uncertain as to why Attempt 2A didn't work, I thought to myself, maybe I can't use commons_logging for the jruby.rack.logging parameter because it's probably not using commons_logging API... (but I was still not sure). I saw slf4j as an option. I have never heard of it and by stroke of luck, I decided to look up what it is. After reading briefly about what it does, I thought it was good of a shot as any and decided to try it out following the instructions here. Continuing from the setup of Attempt 2A: Copied slf4j-api-1.6.1.jar and slf4j-simple-1.6.1.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder I also copied slf4j-log4j12-1.6.1.jar into my WEB-INF/lib folder Restarted Tomcat And VIOLA! I now have logging information going into my rails3.log file. So the big question is: WTF? Even though logging seems to be working now, I'm really not sure if I did this right. So like I said earlier, I'm really looking for some validation more or less. I'd also appreciate any pointers/tips/advice if you have any. Thanks!

My guess is it's something to do with how I'm handling the initial vector/salt. I'm not very crypto-savvy but I'm thinking I should be able to take the sample clear-text and produce the same encrypted value in Java as ColdFusion produced. I am able to encrypt/decrypt my own data with my Java code (so I'm consistent) but I cannot match nor decrypt the ColdFusion sample encrypted value. I have access to a local webservice that can test the encrypted output. The given ColdFusion output sample passes/decrypts fine (of course). If I try to decrypt the same sample with my Java code (using the actual key and salt) I get a "Given final block not properly padded" error. I get the same net result when I pass my attempt at encryption (using the actual key and salt) to the test webservice. Any Ideas?

  I have Hibernate 3.6.0.Final and Spring 3.0.0.RELEASE I get "No Hibernate Session bound to thread, and configuration does not allow creation of non-transactional one here" If I add the thread specification back in, I get "saveOrUpdate is not valid without active transaction" Any ideas? • Apache2 mod_proxy to remote Tomcat7 - slow response

  Been stuck with this one for a few days. Will try to provide as much information as possible, but please feel free to ask for extra detail. I have 2 VMs behind a NAT, 192.168.0.100 and 192.168.0.102, both running Ubuntu 11.04 x64. The first one is mapped to the exterior and is our webserver, has one Apache/2.2.17 install with several vhosts to serve static content, and there's also mod_jk for load balancing. The second one has a tomcat 7 install with several J2EE REST webservices but no apache - requests are expected to be passed directly from .100 apache to .102 tomcat. It is my intention to prepare a tomcat clustered environment. My problem: Requests reach to 192.168.0.100 with no trouble whatsoever, but then take about... 100 seconds for data to actually arrive to .102 - by that time apache has already timeouted, but tomcat receives and processes the request pretty normally. This happens both when using mod_jk, mod_proxy, or mod_ajp_proxy. No idea why, since there are no firewalls in either of the machines, both are pingable - more than that, there are NFS shares active working like a charm - and a mod_proxy experience shown that requests originating directly from .100 are processed normally. Also, to add insult to injury, a similar environment is set up at our office network. Everything works perfectly. -_- The only difference? We have no ip translation at the office and do everything by internal addresses - dunno if that's relevant in any way. • sp_send_dbmail attach files stored as varbinary in database

  I have a two part question relating to sending query results as attachments using sp_send_dbmail. Problem 1: Only basic .txt files will open. Any other format like .pdf or .jpg are corrupted. Problem 2: When attempting to send multiple attachments, I receive one file with all file names glued together. But clearly original headers are lost. It's also worth noting that attachment file sizes are different than the original files. That is most likely due to improper encoding as well. So I'm hoping there's a way to create file headers using the stored mimetype, or some way to include file headers in the binary data? I'm also not confident in the values of the last few parameters, and I know coalesce is not quite right, because it prepends the first file name with a comma. But good documentation is nearly impossible to find. Please help!

  We have a Dynamics CRM 4.0 instance with some custom attributes of type "money" on the Case entity and on all Activity entities (Email, Phone Call, etc.) When I use the built-in "Convert Activity to Case" functionality I find that the resulting Case does not have a Currency set, even if the Activity it was created from does have it. Whenever the case is opened the user then gets this JavaScript error: A currency is required if a value exists in a money field. Select a currency and try again. This is extremely annoying! How do I fix it? Is there any way I can set the currency? It needs to be done synchronously, because the Case is opened immediately when it's created from an Activity. So even if I started a workflow to set the currency the user would still get that error at least once. Alterntatively, can I just suppress the warning somehow? I don't really care about setting the Currency, I just want the error gone. Thanks in advance for any help!

• Random DNS Client Issue with BIND9/Windows Server 2003 DNS

  Within our office, we have a local server running DNS, for internal related "domains", (e.g. .internal, .office, .lan, .vpn, etc.). Randomly, only the hosts configured with those extensions will stop resolving on the Windows-based workstations. Sometimes it'll work for a couple weeks without issue on one machine, then suddenly stop working, or it'll happen on another 15 times per day. It's completely random for all workstations. When troubleshooting, I have opened up a command prompt, and issued various nslookup commands for some of these hosts, and they resolve, however I've been told that nslookup uses different "libraries" for name resolution than other applications such as web browsers, email clients, etc. The only solution thus far, is manually restarting the Windows DNS Client on each workstation when this happens. Issuing the ipconfig /flushdns command multiple times helps every now and then, but is not successful enough to even attempt before restarting the DNS Client. I have tried two different DNS servers; BIND9, and Windows Server 2003 R2 DNS, and the behavior is the same. We have a single Netgear JGS524 switch all workstations and servers are connected to within the office, and a Linksys SR224G switch in another department with workstations attached.

• JavaMail not sending Subject or From under jetty:run-war

  Has anyone seen JavaMail not sending proper MimeMessages to an SMTP server, depending on how the JVM in started? At the end of the day, I can't send JavaMail SMTP messages with Subject: or From: fields, and it appears other headers are missing, only when running the app as a war. The web project is built with Maven and I'm testing sending JavaMail using a browser and a simple mail.jsp to debug and see different behavior when launching the app with: 1) mvn jetty:run (mail sends fine, with proper Subject and From fields) 2) mvn jetty:run-war (mail sends fine, but missing Subject, From, and other fields) I've meticulously run diff on the (verbose) Maven debug output (-X), and there are zero differences in the runtime dependencies between the two. I've also compared System properties, and they are identical. Something else is happening the jetty:run-war case that changes the way JavaMail behaves. What other stones need turning? Curiously, I've tried a debugger in both situations and found that the javax.mail.internet.MimeMessage instance is getting created differently. The webapp is using Spring to send email picked off of an Apache ActiveMQ queue. When running the app as mvn jetty:run the MimeMessage.contentStream variable is used for message content. When running as mvn jetty:run-war, the MimeMessage.content variable is used for the message contents, and the content = ASCIIUtility.getBytes(is); call removes all of the header data from the parsed content. Since this seemed very odd, and debugging Spring/ActiveMQ is a deep dive, I created a simplified test without any of that infrastructure: just a JSP using mail-1.4.2.jar, yet the same headers are missing. Also of note, these headers are missing when running the WAR file under Tomcat 5.5.27. Tomcat behaves just like Jetty when running the WAR, with the same missing headers. With JavaMail debugging turned on, I clearly see different output.   Hi I am trying to send some text in an email from my cocoa app (by using Mail.app). Initially I tried using HTML to send properly formatted text. • Azure - Unable To Get SQL Azure Invitation Code!

  Scenario I'm trying to convert my Silverlight Business Application over to the cloud with the help of Azure. I have been following this link from Brad Abrams blog. Both the links to Windows Azure and SQL Azure crash out in Google Chrome, they work in Internet Explorer, but it's literally one of the worst user experiences I've ever had. The Problem I'm asked to sign in to Microsoft connect with my Live ID. I do so, I'm then asked to register!? - I do so. I'm then sent a verification email which I verify. I'm then signed out!?!?! When I sign back in, it repeats the process.... ANY IDEAS!??! Edit/Update: Finally managed to get signed up/in to connect. From here I was able to get hold of an invitation code to Windows Azure. Now I need an invitation code for SQL Azure. I cannot see ANYWHERE that advertises a way of getting this SQL Azure code, the only thing that I have seen is some text saying that there "may be a delay" in receiving codes due to volume of interest, which quite frankly I find hard to believe......... It's so far been 3 days now.This officially Sucks! If I have any more news I'll post back here.

  I'm trying to get the connections in linkedIn using their API, but when I try to retrieve the connections I get a 401 unauthorized error. in the official documentation says You must use an access token to make an authenticated call on behalf of a user Make the API calls You can now use this access_token to make API calls on behalf of this user by appending "oauth2_access_token=access_token" at the end of the API call that you wish to make. The API call that I'm trying to do is the following Error -- http://api.linkedin.com/v1/people/~/connections:(id,headline,first-name,last-name)?format=json&oauth2_access_token=access_token I have tried to do it with the following endpoint without any problems. OK -- https://api.linkedin.com/v1/people/~:(id,first-name,last-name,formatted-name,date-of-birth,industry,email-address,location,headline,picture-urls::(original))?format=json&oauth2_access_token=access_token this list of endpoints for the connections API are described here http://developer.linkedin.com/documents/connections-api I just copied and pasted one endpoint from there, so the question is what's the problem with the endpoint for getting the connections? what am I missing?
