• OpenXDK Questions

  I was strolling around XBox development. Apart form buying a DevKit from Microsoft, another thing got my attention is called, OpenXDK which stands for Open XBox Development Kit. From their main site its pretty obvious that there hasn't been any update since 2005 but digging a little deeper, I found that in their project repository is was being updated. Last time stamp was 2009-02-15. Quick google search said, its not actually really on a good place to poke around. Many and MANY features are absent. Being a hobby project I perfectly understand. But, those results are quite old. The question is, is there anybody who has any experience with OpenXDK? If is, that is it possible to shade some light on this? about its limitations? Is this a mature project? How's the latest version and what's it capable of doing? Or should I just stay away from it?

• What helped YOU learn C++? [on hold]

  So here's my attempt to not get this question closed for too subjective :P I'm a young programmer, specifically interested in Game Development. I've written my first couple games in Java, which I would consider my self intermediate-Advanced in. As I start to prepare myself for college and (hopefully) internships, I've noticed that learning C/C++ is essential to the industry. I've decided to start with C++, and so I read a couple of books that I saw were suggested. Anyway, now I have a decent understanding of the basics, but I really want to enhance my language knowledge. Instead of just asking for things to do, I was wondering what were some exercises that you did that really helped you understand the language? Preferably they would be near the beginner level. I understand that they obviously won't be directly related to Game Development, but it be nice if there were some things that I could transfer over eventually. (Specifically, I struggle with memory (pointers, etc) since there is no such concept in Java) Thanks! - Tips P.S.: Here's to hoping this isn't to subjective :P

• how does HDR work?

  I'm trying to understand what HDR is and how it works. I understand the basic concepts and have an slight idea of how it is implemented with D3D/hlsl. However it's still pretty foggy. Say I'm rendering a sphere with a texture of the earth and a small point list of vertices to act as stars, how would I render this in HDR ? Here are a few things I'm confused about: I'm guessing, I can't use just any basic image format for the texture as the values would be limited to [0, 255] and clamped to [0, 1] in a shader. Same goes for the back buffer, I take it the format needs to be a float point format ? What are the other steps involved ? Surely there has to be more than just using floating point formats to render to a render target and then apply some bloom as a post process ? (considering the output will be 8bpp anyway) Basically, what are the steps for HDR ? How does it work ? I can't seem to find any good papers / articles that describe the process, other than this one, but it seems to skim over the basics a little, so it's confusing.

• C++ Parallel Asynchonous task

  I am currently building a randomly generated terrain game where terrain is created automatically around the player. I am experiencing lag when the generated process is active, as I am running quite heavy tasks with post-processing and creating physics bodies. Then I came to mind using a parallel asynchronous task to do the post-processing for me. But I have no idea how I am going to do that. I have searched for C++ std::async but I believe that is not what I want. In the examples I found, a task returned something. I want the task to change objects in the main program. This is what I want: // Main program // Chunks that needs to be processed. // NOTE! These chunks are already generated, but need post-processing only! std::vector<Chunk*> unprocessedChunks; And then my task could look something like this, running like a loop constantly checking if there is chunks to process. // Asynced task if(unprocessedChunks.size() > 0) { processChunk(unprocessedChunks.pop()); } I know it's not far from easy as I wrote it, but it would be a huge help for me if you could push me at the right direction. In Java, I could type something like this: asynced_task = startAsyncTask(new PostProcessTask()); And that task would run until I do this: asynced_task.cancel();

• My rhythm game runs choppy even with high frame rate

  I'm coding a rhythm game and the game runs smoothly with uncapped fps. But when I try to cap it around 60 the game updates in little chunks, like hiccups, as if it was skipping frames or at a very low frame rate. The reason I need to cap frame rate is because in some computers I tested, the fps varies a lot (from ~80 - ~250 fps) and those drops are noticeable and degrade response time. Since this is a rhythm game this is very important. This issue is driving me crazy. I've spent a few weeks already on it and still can't figure out the problem. I hope someone more experienced than me could shed some light on it. I was using SDL_GetTicks, but even when I switched to QueryPerformanceCounter, supposedly less granular, I saw no difference. [2] Then I thought it could be due to a rounding error in my position computation and since game updates are smaller in high FPS that would be less noticeable. Indeed there is an small error, but from my tests I realized that it is not enough to produce the position jumps I'm getting. Also, another intriguing factor is that if I enable vsync I'll get smooth updates @60fps regardless frame cap code. So why not rely on vsync? Because some computers can force a disable on gfx card config. [3] I started printing the maximum and minimum frame time measured in 1sec span, in the hope that every a few frames one would take a long time but still not enough to drop my fps computation. It turns out that, with frame cap code I always get frame times in the range of [16, 18]ms, and still, the game "does not moves like jagger". [4] My process' priority is set to HIGH (Windows doesn't allow me to set REALTIME for some reason). As far as I know there is only one thread running along with the game (a sound callback, which I really don't have access to it). I'm using AudiereLib. I then disabled Audiere by removing it from the project and still got the issue. Maybe there are some others threads running and one of them is taking too long to come back right in between when I measured frame times, I don't know. Is there a way to know which threads are attached to my process? [5] There are some dynamic data being created during game run. But It is a little bit hard to remove it to test. Maybe I'll have to try harder this one. Well, as I told you I really don't know what to try next. Anything, I mean, anything would be of great help. What bugs me more is why at 60fps & vsync enabled I get an smooth update and at 60fps & no vsync I don't. Is there a way to implement software vsync? I mean, query display sync info? But when I send SIGHUP, the child process becomes a zombie. How can I detect if the child is a zombie in the parent process? I try the code below, but it doesn't return me the desired result since the child process is still there but it is defunct. kill(childPID, 0); One more question; can I kill the zombie child without killing the parent? (either complete or waiting for input) has anyone tried something like waiting 100 millis since the last output from the process and declaring it "done" ? any better ideas on how i can implement a nice wrapper around things like runtime.exec("cmd.exe") ?

  Hi, I am working on a 64-bit .Net Windows Service application that essentially loads up a bunch of data for processing. While performing data volume testing, we were able to overwhelm the process and it threw an OutOfMemoryException (I do not have any performance statistics on the process when it failed.) I have a hard time believing that the process requested a chunk of memory that would have exceeded the allowable address space for the process since its running on a 64-bit machine. I do know that the process is running on a machine that is consistently in the neighborhood of 80%-90% physical memory usage. My question is: Can the CLR throw an OutOfMemoryException if the machine is critically low on available physical memory even though the process wouldn't exceed it's allowable amount of virtual memory? The problem is that some windows get moved and resized and some don't. Also it even seems that moved and resized windows aren't moved and resized according to the MoveWindow function call because they are resized to title bar and all of them are on the same line (same y coordinate). • Two internet connections coming in, one Sonicwall Tz170 (enhanced os), and slow speed

  I work a lot from my home office and being in general a tad paranoid I have cable and DSL pipes coming into my house. I have used an Ebay bought Sonicwall Tz170 with the enhanced OS for a good while. I believe it does failover and has a feature for doing round robin on which connection is used. I get the impression from using it that I might not be getting the most out of this setup. Is it possible/likely that my router could be a cause of the slowdown? Are there more appropriate choices?

  I've been asked to setup some remote access to a NAS drive. The NAS drive will sit on a VLAN inside a network that uses a Cisco 891 IS router as gateway. The charity have no SSL-VPN licenses for the Cisco. At present there are no open ports or services on the Cisco itself and ideally we would like to keep it that way for a while, hence the request for a LogMeIn style service that's initiated from inside. We need multiple user access, about 10 max. Using LogMeIn on a machine connected to the NAS would only provide screen sharing I believe, and no concurrent connections (could be wrong?) The end users need to be able to read and write files to the NAS from Mac's and PC's around the globe. Read-only access from Mobile devices would be a bonus but not absolutely necessary. This is for a charity, non-commercial, but they are willing to spend if necessary. Cisco config knowledge is at a minimum so if I can avoid upsetting that delicate device I'll be happy :) Anyone have any clever ideas? I can provide more information on request. Thanks, Ben
