• Windows 7 Connection Sharing unable to access some sites

  I have a pretty sad networking situation that involves connecting to an open Wireless network and sharing that connection to an Ethernet that is plugged into a Linksys router. This has been done with XP and Windows 7, and it works great with XP. The problem with Windows 7 is that only some DNS will work. I don't know if it's been poisoned on the network above us (which we have no control over), but we've tried clearing the DNS cache as well as moving to using Google's DNS servers (8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4). Here is a really quick list of sites that won't respond to DNS requests at all via dig, although if I get the IP address I can ping them: facebook.com yuilibrary.com twitter.com A lot of sites do work though. Anyone have an idea? It may be a subnet problem? If anyone wants more info let me know.

• Terminal issues on OS X with XAMPP and Yii framework

  I'm trying to configure the Yii framework but am having problems with the terminal commands, and am also having difficulty setting up the webapp demo. I am using Mac OS X Snow Leopard and have installed XAMPP and placed the 'yii' folder in the xamppfiles \ htdocs folder. I have verified the http://localhost/yii/requirements/index.php which is working fine. I have tried the following but nothing seems to work so if anyone can point out what I'm doing wrong it would be very much appreciated. • "Couldn't resolve host" for any external content

  On our site we run a few different scripts for various sites (uploading to amazon s3, data from chartbeat, script to count twitter followers) and all of them just stop working from time to time. They work most days, but then some days (like today) they all just stop working. This simple script to get follower count into PHP $url = "http://twitter.com/users/show/username"; $response = file_get_contents ( $url ); $t_profile = new SimpleXMLElement ( $response ); $count = $t_profile->followers_count; Just sits there for a couple minutes, then finally spits out an error that says "Couldn't resolve host". Any script we use for an external site gives us this error. I'm not really sure where to check what's blocking these connections all of a sudden, and why it seems to work most times, then doesn't for a day or so, then works again. Any tips? • Vagrant with VMware ESXi Provider

  I am attempting to work with Vagrant and the vagrant-vsphere plugin to deploy machines to my VMware ESXi server. Has anyone had any luck in getting this to work? I realize that vagrant-vsphere is still 0.0.1 though and there are bound to be bugs. Specifially, Vagrant and vagrant-vsphere appear to fail during the vsphere connection, however, SSH and CLI access is enabled and the vSphere powershell is able to connect without an issue. INFO warden: Calling action: # ERROR warden: Error occurred: VagrantPlugins::VSphere::Errors::VSphereError The hostd log file on the ESXi server shows the Vagrant doing an SearchIndex query.

• Remapping Home/End from PC to Mac Via Synergy is not client specific.

  This question asks about the end key but the answers give no examples: http://superuser.com/questions/60052/what-key-works-like-end-using-a-mac-with-synergy If they had, I am guessing that they would likely have run into this problem. Adding lines like the bottom two of this: section: options keystroke(End) = keystroke(Control+Right,myiMac) keystroke(Home) = keystroke(Control+Left,myiMac) to my synergy.sgc in MyDocuments on the winXP machine would work but causes the keys to stop functioning on the winXP machine. Unacceptable. I next tried a compromise: keystroke(End) = keystroke(Control+Right,myiMac); keystroke(End,myPc) keystroke(Home) = keystroke(Control+Left,myiMac); keystroke(Home,myPc) Expecting that to broadcast the keystrokes to both machines regardless of which one was the Active Screen. That and many other variations did not work. What am I doing wrong? Has someone actually done this?

• Can't type into some text fields in any browser on Windows 7

  I can't type into e.g. facebook's log in form with my computer. I hit my keys, but nothing happens. Special characters like c, c, š, etc. work. Backspace doesn't, delete does. This goes for Internet Explorer, Firefox and Chrome. This also happens with some other sites, sometimes even with gmail (or any google's log in form). I read somewhere that the solution is to reregister some dlls: regsvr32 mshtmled.dll regsvr32 jscript.dll regsvr32 /i mshtml.dll The first two work, the third one says The module "mshtml.dll" was loaded but the entry-point DllRegisterServer.dll was not found. And of course, running just the first two didn't help. Does anyone know how to fix this problem?

  I'm want install Xen Server 6.2 though ipxe, I tried different configurations, no luck making to work until now.   I'm looking for an open source cross platform WYSIWYG editor that I can use to write documentation. I'm not looking for a web based solution - i.e. it should work without a web server, and I want to save my files directly to disk. The result could be any structured format, like Wiki markup, ReStructuredText, DocBook, or a small subset of HTML, ... But it's important, that Subversion diff can be used to see differences between the versions easily (this wouldn't work with .odt or .rtf files for example) I'm currently thinking about using Open Office, and saving the files as HTML, but is there a better solution?

  I'm on Debian Lenny using apache2. in my proxy.conf I tried adding Allow from localhost as suggested in some other forums to get proxying to work. Didn't work. It only worked if I say Allow from all My question is this. Are there any security implications to this Allow from all directive? Most people were saying to make this as limited as possible, but "all" is the client right? I want anyone regardless of their IP to be forwarded properly. Is there a better way to configure this?

• Can't access VirtualBox host-only network from windows host

  I've got two vms running on a windows host, each with a host-only network and ips in the 192.168.56.XXX range. One of them is running apache and serving some content that I want to access from my windows host. However, the windows host can't access the apache server at all. The server is running on 192.168.56.103. ipconfig from windows says it's ip for the Virtual Box interface is 169.254.143.37. I tried route add to route 192.168.56.XX traffic, but everything I tried didn't work and I was probably using it wrong. Any ideas on how to make this work?

  I recently installed the game watch dogs After installing it i upgraded the drivers on my graphics card AMD Radion R9 200 series via the catalyst software and since then windows has been crashing on an ad-hoc basis even when sitting idle I have recieved two different sets of errors OXOOOOOOO1 and VIDEO_SCHEDULER_INTERNAL_ERROR I am running windows 8.1 with the driver 14.4 from AMD My PC shouldnt really be having this problem as it is pretty high spec due to my work Any help would be greatly appreciated as it is driving me up the walls a bit [UPDATE 08-06-2014] I have been looking around online and have crashed the PC a few times now trying to recreate the bug I have looked into the event history viewer and gotten the following errors amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: IOCTL_ACPKSD_KSD_TO_USR_SVC_SET_FB_APERTURES: FAILED amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: GfxMemServiceInitialize: FAILED I took some advice from the AMD forums to re-install the old drivers to see if they would work. I uninstalled the old ones first and installed directly from the CD I got the warnings below but the driver installed "successfully" The Warnings are amdacpusrsvc acpusrsvc: ConfigureFrameBufferMemory: FAILED. Hopefully this will spark something off for someone Thanks John

• Light Voip and IM server for small teams

  So I have a small group that would need a self hosted Im/voip and possibly video conferencing solution. My goal is for a small group of people (no more than 40) to be able to collaborate within a local area network. I need something that is self hosted, so unfortunately outside solutions like Skype and hosted Lync would not work. I'm looking for something that would allow both one on one, and group communication, so and IRC server would not work. I'm hopefully looking for something that does not require multiple servers, or is too complex to set up. As a student, I have a license of Lync 2013, but setting that up on a single server without active directory is practically impossible. Would Lync 2010 be easier to do on a single server? Are there any other good solutions? Thanks

• MSSQL 2005 migration to 2008 Express Edition - Any complications?

  Hey, I've developed an application that uses ASP.NET, Linq-to-SQL and MSSQL 2005. However, I would like to migrate it to MSSQL 2008. I don't have MSSQL 2008, so I was wondering if it's possible for me to detach my 2005 db and attach it within 2008 express edition, to test if it will work on my host's MSSQL 2008 server? I haven't done anything complicated (CRUD is done from Linq to SQL, and all stored procs are the ASP.NET Membership default ones). Would this work, or will I get an error since I'm 'downgrading' so to speak? If I download MSSQL 2008 express edition, it will be on the same system as my MSSQL 2005 Developer Edition. I'm hoping this won't cause any problems? Thanks

• Prevent zsh from trying to expand everything

  Recently switched from bash, I noticed that zsh will try to expand every command or argument that looks like it has wildcards in it. So the following lines won't work any more: git diff master{,^^} zsh: no matches found: master^^ scp remote:~/*.txt . zsh: no matches found: remote:~/*.txt The only way to make the above commands work is to quote the arguments, which is quite annoying. Q: How do I configure zsh to still try to expand wildcards, but if there are no matches, just pass on the argument as-is? EDIT: Possibly related: scp with zsh : no matches found

• IE8 Windows 7 (64bit) security certificate problem

  Hi, We have just received some new computers for use in the office (Dell Vostro). They seem to work fine in the main. When we use IE8 to go to some web pages such as yahoo mail it tells us: “There is a problem with this websites security certificate” If we have a look at the details it says: “This certificate cannot be verified up to a trusted certification authority” This however works correctly in Firefox. I don't understand why I should get such an error message, should this not just work? I don't think its anything to do with the certificate itself as this is happening on www.yahoo.co.uk and other commercial (amazon I think?) sites. I think there is something off with the PCs setup. The PC has Windows 7 (64 bit) and Norton Internet Security installed. Any ideas as to why this is happening? Thanks

• Can't connect to Windows Server 2008 shared folders via VPN connection

  I set up an VPN connection on my 2008 server using RRAS. The VPN seems to work fine. I can connect from outside the network. I am also able to establish a remote access connection via the VPN-IP. However, I can't access my shared folders. After connecting to the VPN I can ping the server, but it is not shown in my networks. using \ip or \server-name doesn't work either, cannot be found. I checked ipconfig and this is what I found regarding the VPN: DNS-Suffix: Description: test Physical Adress: DHCP activated: No Auto-Config: Yes IPv4-Adress: 192.168.2.114 Sub: 255.255.255.255 Standard-gateway: DNS-Server: 192.168.0.1 NetBIOS: activated To clarify my IP-situation: server is connected to router with 192.168.0.x, the test-client is in an external network connected to a router with 192.168.1.x, server-client connection is using static ips with 192.168.2.x Can anyone help me with this one? The VPN should be ok since I am able to establish remote access.

  I'm working on a simple "DB" for some people at work and I don't want to do anything fancy. the fields should be something like name , number , notes , File:resume, notes (where file:notes is the acutall embedded resume. I cant see any obvious way to do this but i thought i would ask just the same. Is there a way to take a (pdf , doc , docx , txt) and throw it into a cell so a user can click on it and it will open the file in the approate program note: this db is going to be floating around between multiple sites so linking won't work.

• DNS updating issue

  Hey guys, I'm new to serverfault so please excuse me if I sound a tad nub. I work in an environment that is kinda peace mealed together, and I honestly don't know how it works. I'm new to the IT field and am still in school. When I replace a PC I rename the old one to mo-o-pcname and give the new one the proper name of mo-pcname (mo is a location thing we use so it really doesn't apply to the problem.) The new PC will function on the network; it will have the ability to access network resources (printers, file shares, etc) and it will have the ability to get out to the internet. However I can no longer ping the machine. It would appear as if the DNS (A) record is not getting updated or something. Like I said I'm kinda new to the field and just trying to work through this problem. Thanks for your help.

• Using OpenVPN, yet netflix.com blocks access

  I have set up an OpenVPN server on a VPS in the USA and configured it to route all clients traffic through it. Everything seems to work fine regarding the VPN connection in gerneral. All ip lookup sites show me the us server's ip address and even hulu.com works(it won't work if you are not in the usa). But for some reason netflix.com says "Sorry, Netflix is not available in your country yet.". So I thought that netflix probably uses some more sophisticated ways to determine your location beyond just your ip address. But I could not find a way to get it to work until I dropped the idea of using a VPN and instead connected to the server via a simple socks tunnel with ssh by running: ssh -D 9999 user@serverip All I had to do was changing the key network.proxy.socks_remote_dns in Firefox from false to true to prevent DNS leaks and setting up the socks proxy. Then I could finally watch netflix.com. As a result I concluded that there is nothing in the browser(or something like system timezone) that tells netflix the location, so it has to have something to do with the OpenVPN config. After that I used tcpdump to log all the traffic on the server's network interface venet0 (OpenVZ VPS), visited netflix.com on the client while first connected to the VPN and then connected via socks tunnel and afterwards compared both outputs. The only thing that caught my eye was that while using the socks tunnel the server mainly used ipv6 to connect to netflix whereas it only used ipv4 when the client was connected to the OpenVPN server. But I don't get how that could make such a difference. So what am I missing? Is there a way to configure OpenVPN to also use ipv6 to connect to a website although there is only an ipv4 connection between the VPS and the client? • Create Hidden Partition on USB

  I need to split an USB flash disk into two USB drives, each one with its own drive letter, but one of these has to be hidden. In the non-hidden partition I want to place my software, and in the hidden partition I need to place some files that are required by the software in order to work. Moreover, only the software may read, write, delete or execute the files in this partition. I thought to use a little partition viewed as a CD-ROM drive, as they do in many flash drives, but this solution does not allow to write other data in a second moment, and it's visible to the user that can read the file. Obviously the software must be able to access to partition and read, write, delete or execute the content. Is there a solution to do so, possibly that work also on Linux?

• Remote connection IP to use

  I have two laptops that both run on ubuntu and installed ssh server and ssh client on them. One is usually on my desk at home and one I usually bring to my company. When I'm at home I can easily ssh to one from the other by typing this command (to login to the other laptop whose IP address is: 192.168.0.105) : ssh -p 22 [email protected] However, When I'm at my company, I try to type the same command and ofcourse it doesn't work. I understand that when at home I'm on LAN network, that my laptops actually using my ISP's address which differ from 192.168.0.107 asummed 203.113.131.1. So could you tell me what IP that ssh shoud use for my laptop (at work) to connet to my computer at home? Thank you.

• How to run MS C++ 6.0 on Windows 7

  I have MS Windows C++ version 6.0 on XP. I'd like to move it to a Windows 7 platform but when I try to install it there I get some garbage about it not being compatible, proceed at your own risk etc. When I proceed, it (not surprisingly) doesn't work. Is there a way to convince these Microsoft tools to play nice with each other? I have Win7 home edition, but I would be willing to upgrade to Win7 Pro IF I knew it would work under the "XP emulation" mode. Failing both those options, what is the least expensive "upgrade" path for C++? I don't need a bunch of other junk, just the C++ compiler. The goal is to retire my XP system since currently the only reason I keep it is to compile C++ programs that eventually are run under Win7. Thanks, Hotei

• Linksys WRT54Gx as Repeater Bridge

  I have a Linksys WRT54Gx router with DD-WRT software working fine. But. Is it possible to use it as a Repeater Bridge when the host router isn't configured to be in the default 192.168.1.1 subnet? I've set everything from these instructions. I've also tried setting repeater router's IP address to be inside host's subnet, setting Gateway + DNS IP addresses... But It still didn't work. Client machines connecting to second router (my Linksys) were configured to use DHCP and also static IPs within host's subnet. Nothing worked. Can anyone tell me how to configure it to make it work?
