• Sync files between Mac, PC and Linux automatically

  Hello everyone- I have a MacBook Pro, a Windows 7 desktop, and a Fedora 13 netbook. I have been searching far and wide for an automatic solution to sync files (pictures, music, docs, etc...) between the three when they are all on the same LAN. To better explain, when I get home and turn my MacBook on, I want it to sync automatically any file changes to Windows 7 and the netbook. Likewise if I make changes on my Windows 7 box, I want them to be reflected on my Mac. I can use rsync, but it is not automatic as far as I can tell, and I would use Dropbox but I have a lot more that 2 gigs and do not want to pay. I also do not need internet syncing. I just want local LAN. Does anyone have any ideas? Thank you very much in advance.

• XFCE: active panel buttons when mouse is on screen edge

  I'm using XFCE 4.6.1 (Xubuntu distribution) on my laptop and main computer; the settings are approximately the same. so far for the intro. What I'm experiencing is that when going to the screen edge over the task bar on the laptop, the button under the mouse is active. On the main machine however, having the mouse on the screen edge, the button below it doesn't react at all! Only if I move the pointer towards the center a bit, the hover highlight starts and the button becomes clickable. I've tried to change the panel size, desktop theme and a few other settings, but none seems to cure that problem. Is there something that causes this problem? (Googling also seems to give no results)

• nginx symlinks permission denied / 403 Forbidden on Mac OSX

  So I have an nginx server running on Mac OSX and I am trying to create a symlink in my nginx www directory from somewhere else. In the browser I get the wonderful 403 Forbidden error. I have also tried chmod'ing my life away for the past few hours. There doesn't seem to be anything on the stack about it. One thing concerns me is that I am not sure if symlinks are directly supported by ngninx on Mac. Trying to use disable_symlink directive results in: nginx: [emerg] unknown directive "disable_symlinks" in /usr/local/etc/nginx/nginx.conf:44` Some info about my setup: nginx -v : nginx version: nginx/1.4.2 To create the symlink I do the following: cd /Users/levi/www ln -s "/Users/levi/Desktop/.../client" "/Users/levi/www/client" The error in the log: [error] 11864#0: *7 open() "/Users/levi/www/client" failed (13: Permission denied), client: 127.0.0.1, server: _, request: "GET /client HTTP/1.1", host: "localhost" Any help is much appreciated. • Need help creating advanced context menu command in Windows 7 (x64)

  I found out about ForceBindIP and I really love it, so much that I am using it regularly enough to where spamming the same command prompt over and over again is getting painful. Here's ForceBindIP and what it does: http://www.r1ch.net/stuff/forcebindip/ I'm on a 64-bit of Windows 7 Home Premium. What I want to do is add a right-click context menu item so that when I browse items in Windows Explorer, or on my desktop, I can automate a ForceBindIP command (through the prompt). I am permanently connected to two networks: one over ethernet, and one over wireless. My ethernet network takes priority. What I want to do is add a "Run through wireless network" context menu item, that will send the item through this command: ForceBindIP {5F657824-9E3B-46E5-C21E-F52585R6457E} "[path to right-clicked file here]" It will need to run that command in C:\Windows\SysWOW64. I've no experience at all playing with the Windows registry or writing batch files, anything of that sort. I was wondering if anyone here would be kind enough to assist me?

• How can I get VirtualBox Guest Additions installed in an Ubuntu 9.10 server?

  I have a freshly installed Ubuntu 9.10 server installed within a VirtualBox VM instance. From the VirtualBox menu bar, I selected Devices: Install Guest Additions... Then performed the following commands: > sudo apt-get install -y build-essential linux-headers-$(uname -r) > sudo mount /dev/cdrom /mnt/ > sudo /mnt/VBoxLinuxAdditions-amd64.run After some successful looking results, the following error is displayed: Installing the Window System drivers ...fail! (Could not find the X.Org or XFree86 Window System.) After restarting, I was looking forward to some UI integration with my host desktop (resize window, not needing to press right-Ctrl to escape the client window, and having copy and paste functionality. Is it possible to install the Guest Additions without the X Window overhead (I plan to only use for shell commands)? If additional packages are required, which ones?

• How to make Windows 7 use a different name for the Program Files folder?

  How can I properly rename the Program Files folder in Windows 7? That is, not simply rename the directory and create symlinks, but make Windows itself see the location of installed programs as something else. I have already renamed the directory to Programs (using desktop.ini for a localized name in explorer), and made Program Files into a symlink to that, but I wonder if it's ever possible to erase the symlink by configuring Windows to, under all circumstances, assume Programs as the actual name for the programs directory. I heard that it should be possible to choose the name from Windows installation, but I'm not sure. Besides, I don't want to reinstall Windows from scratch. Before you mention %ProgramFiles%, no, it doesn't work. I'm not sure if Windows has that location hard-coded, or if replacing all occurrences in the registry would be enough.

• taskmgr.exe 100% CPU Usage

  Hi. I have 2 IBM servers Intel Xeon Dual core with 2gb RAM. the problem is that Taskmanager uses one full core when i open it. The same happens when i copy files in the explorer. OS: Windows 2003 Server Things i tried: Installed all updates They has kaspersky anti virus and they previously had Nod32. All drivers installed OK. All unused devices are disabled in the bios. Reinstalled win 2003 SP2. No conflict in drivers Tried opening via remote desktop and the problem continues. • How to black out second monitor when playing a full screen game?

  I've got two monitors. When I play a full screen game in my primary monitor, the second monitor still shows the Windows desktop. How can I black out the second monitor so that it doesn't show anything at all? My graphics card is from ATI. I'm running Windows 7 in Boot Camp on an iMac. I don't know if this makes a difference, however, as any solution to my question will do, really. For instance, is there a tiny app that I could run to disable the second monitor for a while? I'd rather not have to open Windows display settings every time I run a game and disable the monitor that way, though.

• Multiple User VPN

  I am looking for a cheap or free solution to be able to connect multiple people via VPN to a host computer. Each person should not be able to see what the others are doing while logged in. Is this possible and if so where do I start my hunt? Aaron Update: I was not sure what server, was just thinking of doing it on say a win7 desktop. Just looking into having 2-3 users have access to a program without each seeing each other. Basically, I know nothing and want to know if this is a possibility for me. lol

• IDE <-> SATA Adapter Issue - Hard Drive Not recognized

  I was trying to use one of these IDE to SATA adapters (Syba SD-ADA50016 IDE/SATA Converter Bi-directional IDE to SATA) and I connected a working hard drive (Seagate Barracuda 500 GB SATA 3.5 Inch 7200 RPM Version 12 Desktop Internal Hard Drive ST3500418AS). I could get the drive to be recognized by the BIOS, but I couldn't boot a Linux disc or install to the drive. I tried to install pfSense to this drive and the install failed because the setup couldn't recognize the file. Has anyone heard of these adapters giving trouble and/or not working properly? I would like to be able to use this device for newer drives on older boards.

  I need to unarchive a file to the /Developer folder. • Computer crashes and won't start, LED indicator blinks slowly

  I have a MSI K8NGM2-FID motherboard coupled with a AMD Athlon 3700+ and an Antec TPII-550 power supply. The computer crashes at random times in operation, sometimes taking a while to crash, and sometimes crashing right after Windows XP shows the desktop after boot. The CPU temperature is always in the safe range, usually 30-33 degrees Celsius, and swapping the RAM has not done anything, so the crashes aren't cause by the RAM. What could be causing this? If the motherboard were fried, would the computer even boot at all? What causes inconsistent crashing of the computer? After the computer crashes, the LED power indicator blinks about once a second, and the computer does not respond to the power button. This behavior continues until the computer's power supply is completely removed.

  Hello all, I recently installed Suse Linux enterprise Desktop 11 on my box. I created an user and logged in first time into a GNOME session without any problems. Last time I logged in I selected the session as TWM and that got me into the T windows manager just fine. Now when I log out and try to log back into a GNOME session, it will still log me into the TVM session. I have tried restarting the box but that has not helped. However, when I remote log in to the machine it will let me got on the GNOME session just fine. I'm guessing this is probably a really simple fix, however I am a Linux newbie and doing a google search isn't yielding me what I'm looking for. Thanks in advance for your help, Rohan

• Does using cat5e cables yield any disadvantages in combination with cat6/cat6a network?

  If I were to have a fully compliant cat6 or cat6a network running through my walls... that is to say, wires and jacks... What would be the concequence of plugging a cat5e wire into one of the jacks? I'm assuming that it would still run at cat5e standards, but obviously not cat6/6a standards because the whole connection is not cat6. I only ask because it seems silly to me to make a bunch of cat6 patch cables for connections that don't really matter, like standard desktop computers and other equipment. Or will doing so hamper the whole network?

• prevent domain controller using wpad for windows update

  We have a 2012 domain controller in an environment where we are running a web proxy auto discovery (WPAD) setup for client devices, and that proxy server requires authentication. However windows update does not support proxy servers requiring authentication. So we want to prevent windows update on our servers from using the WPAD proxy settings. On a domain member server we can log in to the local administrator account (not domain admin) and un-tick the the "Auto detect proxy settings" in IE internet options and that fixes the issue on those servers. But a domain controller does not have a local admin account, as that account is the domain admin account. Doing this to the domain admin account on the DC does not prevent it from using WPAD. Our whole purpose of running a proxy server that requires authentication is so we can identify what the users on our session based remote desktop servers are doing on the internet. • Why do the IP addresses randomly change?

  I have a network with the following: Cable modem with static IP address Router Desktop - Win 7 VM Host - VMware ESXi 4.0 A couple of VM Guests - Windows Every now and then my Win 7 PC is unable to access some of the VMs. When I ping the VMs by their domain name their IP address shows up as the IP address of the cable modem. Sometimes I can fix it by running ipconfig /flushdns. The IP address will reset back to what it was supposed to be, but occasionally it wont work. Why does this happen and how can I fix it?

• Automatically save/download e-mail body to disk

  Is there a program that will allow me to connect to my mail server (IMAP) and automatically save certain new e-mails to disk? Multiple times a day I receive automated e-mail updates about pending jobs from a system that processes some information for us. The data in these e-mails is written as plain-text within the body of the message. I would like to download the newest message, parse it, and display it on my desktop. The last two parts I can manage ok - it's just the automatic downloading that is posing a challenge. I don't use Outlook (I do use Thunderbird), but would prefer not to have the client open to make this happen. I'm currently running Win7.

• How can I make it difficult to install a new operating system on a certain computer?

  I want to host a website on a desktop computer running Ubuntu with a Windows virtual machine. I will give away the computer in exchange for a number of months of remote web hosting. I want to add some kind of lock (hardware or otherwise) so that the end users will have difficulty just reinstalling Windows and using the machine as they want, in contradiction to the contract. Ideally, I'd want the machine to die if reinstallation of the OS is attempted. It doesn't have to be completely insurmountable, but it has to be difficult enough to prevent casual reinstallation. Perhaps on bootup the system can check whether certain files exist on the computer and refuse to boot if they do not. I don't know if this is possible, but maybe BIOS is password protected, and searches for files before boot up. The files it looks for could be date sensitive, i.e. require remote replacement on a schedule.

Also there is m23, probably the most usable and interesting peace of manager software. But, what would you suggest to install and use on following configuration: 1) 100 desktop users, against an AD with quest authentication services installed. (ubunt8.04,9.04,9.10,10.04) 2) 50 servers (debian sid, lenny , ubuntu 8.04 and 10.04) We work on different software, so each group of persons need different configurations, each server has different pourposses, nothing is clusterized. And we have a good enough backup software. • Git version control with multiple users

  Hello, i am a little bit lost with this issue, let me explain you my problem: I want to setup a git repository, three of four users will contribute, so they need to download the code and shall be able to upload their changes to the server or update their branch with the latest modifications. So, i setup a linux machine, install git, setup the repository, then add the users in order to enable the acces throught ssh. Now my question is, What's next?, the git documentation is a little bit confusing, i.e. when i try from a dummy user account to clone the repository i got: xxx@xxx-desktop:~/Documentos/git/test$ git clone -v ssh://[email protected]/pub.git Initialized empty Git repository in /home/xxx/Documentos/git/test/pub/.git/ [email protected]'s password: fatal: '/pub.git' does not appear to be a git repository fatal: The remote end hung up unexpectedly is that a problem of privileges? need any special configuration? i want to avoid using git-daemon or gitosis, sorry, maybe my question sound silly but git is powerfull but i admit not so user friendly. • My dedicated server keeps getting very slow that it fails to load the application

  I have an application running on Windows Server 2008, running IIS 7.5, SQL Server 2008, 4GB RAM from brinkster. The problem is, every couple of days I get the same 10,000 calls that the system is very slow, and its not operating properly, then after 30 minutes of that it just fails to load. I try to access the server from the remote desktop connection but I can't access it. The only way it I can get it working again is to call the support at brinkster and have them do a manual reboot of the server. After that it works well for some time, and the it re-crashes after some time. Support over there, are not helping a lot.

• New Xming Windows Doesn't Grab Focus

  I do my day-to-day work on Windows 7 (no, that's not going to change) and often need to work with Linux running on Parallels. Switching between Windows and Linux desktops is a pain, so I've installed Cygwin+Xming (less complicated than CygwinX). I open a Cygwin command line using mintty, then do ssh -Y to get a Linux command line. Doing "vim" on the Linux command line causes the vim window to appear on my Windows desktop. This is great, except that the new vim window doesn't automatically grab the focus, which stays with the mintty window. Years of habit cause me to start typing immediately without clicking on the new window. Having to switch manually is very jarring. Any way to make it automatic?

• LAMP stack security question - uploading files to server

  I am running Ubuntu 9.10 desktop on my home machine. I need to upload files from my local machine, to my web server, on a periodic basis. My server is running Ubuntu Server LTS. I want my server to be secure, and only run the LAMP stack and possibly, an email server. I do not (ideally) want to have FTP or anything that can allow (more) knowledgeable hackers to be able to hack into my server. Can anyone recommend how I may send files from my local machine to the server? This may seem an easy/trivial question, but I am relatively new to Linux - and I got my previous Windows server machine serious hacked in the past, hence the move to Linux, and thats why I am so security conscious.
