• Oracle Communications Calendar Server: Upgrading to Version 7 Update 3

  It's been some time since I have posted an entry. Now, with the release of Oracle Communications Calendar Server 7 Update 3, it seems high time to jump start this blog again. To begin with, check out what's new in this release: Authenticating Against an External Directory Booking Window for Calendars Changes to the davadmin Command Enable and Disable Account Autocreation LDAP Pools New Configuration Parameters New Languages New populate-davuniqueid Utility New Schema Objects Non-active Calendar Accounts Are No Longer Searched or Fetched Remote Document Store Authentication The upgrade is a bit more complicated than normal, as you must first apply some new schema elements to your Directory Server(s). To do so, you need to get the comm_dssetup 6.4 patch, patch the comm_dssetup script, and then run the patched comm_dssetup against your Directory Server(s) instances. In addition, if you are using the nsUniqueId attribute as your deployment's unique identifier, you'll want to change that to the new davUniqueId attribute. Consult the Upgrade Procedure for details, as well as DaBrain's blog, before forging ahead with this upgrade. • Pirates, Treasure Chests and Architectural Mapping

  Pirate 1: Why do pirates create treasure maps? Pirate 2: I do not know.Pirate 1: So they can find their gold. Yes, that was a bad joke, but it does illustrate a point. Pirates are known for drawing treasure maps to their most prized possession. These documents detail the decisions pirates made in order to hide and find their chests of gold. The map allows them to trace the steps they took originally to hide their treasure so that they may return. As software engineers, programmers, and architects we need to treat software implementations much like our treasure chest. Why is software like a treasure chest? It cost money, time,  and resources to develop (Usually) It can make or save money, time, and resources (Hopefully) If we operate under the assumption that software is like a treasure chest then wouldn’t make sense to document the steps, rationale, concerns, and decisions about how it was designed? Pirates are notorious for documenting where they hide their treasure.  Shouldn’t we as creators of software do the same? By documenting our design decisions and rationale behind them will help others be able to understand and maintain implemented systems. This can only be done if the design decisions are correctly mapped to its corresponding implementation. This allows for architectural decisions to be traced from the conceptual model, architectural design and finally to the implementation. Mapping gives software professional a method to trace the reason why specific areas of code were developed verses other options. Just like the pirates we need to able to trace our steps from the start of a project to its implementation,  so that we will understand why specific choices were chosen. The traceability of a software implementation that actually maps back to its originating design decisions is invaluable for ensuring that architectural drifting and erosion does not take place. The drifting and erosion is prevented by allowing others to understand the rational of why an implementation was created in a specific manor or methodology The process of mapping distinct design concerns/decisions to the location of its implemented is called traceability. In this context traceability is defined as method for connecting distinctive software artifacts. This process allows architectural design models and decisions to be directly connected with its physical implementation. The process of mapping architectural design concerns to a software implementation can be very complex. However, most design decision can be placed in  a few generalized categories. Commonly Mapped Design Decisions Design Rationale Components and Connectors Interfaces Behaviors/Properties Design rational is one of the hardest categories to map directly to an implementation. Typically this rational is mapped or document in code via comments. These comments consist of general design decisions and reasoning because they do not directly refer to a specific part of an application. They typically focus more on the higher level concerns. Components and connectors can directly be mapped to architectural concerns. Typically concerns subdivide an application in to distinct functional areas. These functional areas then can map directly back to their originating concerns.Interfaces can be mapped back to design concerns in one of two ways. Interfaces that pertain to specific function definitions can be directly mapped back to its originating concern(s). However, more complicated interfaces require additional analysis to ensure that the proper mappings are created. Depending on the complexity some Behaviors\Properties can be translated directly into a generic implementation structure that is ready for business logic. In addition, some behaviors can be translated directly in to an actual implementation depending on the complexity and architectural tools used. Mapping design concerns to an implementation is a lot of work to maintain, but is doable. In order to ensure that concerns are mapped correctly and that an implementation correctly reflects its design concerns then one of two standard approaches are usually used. All Changes Come From ArchitectureBy forcing all application changes to come through the architectural model prior to implementation then the existing mappings will be used to locate where in the implementation changes need to occur. Allow Changes From Implementation Or Architecture By allowing changes to come from the implementation and/or the architecture then the other area must be kept in sync. This methodology is more complex compared to the previous approach.  One reason to justify the added complexity for an application is due to the fact that this approach tends to detect and prevent architectural drift and erosion. • Redirect public traffic to a different subfolder, while local traffic remains unchanged

  I would like to have local (intranet) HTTP traffic go to the /var/www/html folder while any public traffic goes to the subfolder, /var/www/html/public I've tried this configuration, with some variation, in httpd.conf <VirtualHost PRIVATE-IP> DocumentRoot /var/www/html ServerName ecn ErrorLog /var/www/logs/error/private CustomLog /var/www/logs/access/private common </VirtualHost> <VirtualHost PUBLIC-IP> DocumentRoot /var/www/html/public ServerName PUBLIC-DOMAIN-NAME ErrorLog /var/www/logs/error/public CustomLog /var/www/logs/access/public common </VirtualHost> PUBLIC-IP, PRIVATE-IP, and PUBLIC-DOMAIN name are all replaced with the correct values in the actual document. The problem is, local traffic can browse fine but remote traffic is directed to the root folder and getting 403d (because I have that folder blocked off through my .htaccess file). If I append /public to the URL it works fine.

• Menus and text boxes look graphically corrupted in 12.10

  If I let my computer run long enough the screen gets glitchy or graphically corrupted only in certain areas i.e. in text related boxes, menus, menu bars, scroll bars, the system monitor window, etc. It becomes difficult to read what I am typing. Its been happening quite often and I can only fix it by restarting the computer, but its only a matter of time before it happens again. Don't know what else to do, its been a thorn in my side for quite some time now and I need a fix soon because its only gets more frequent until I'm rebooting my computer five times a day. • Remove Ubuntu 11.10 from Dual Boot Windows XP without XP CD?

  I installed Ubuntu on a old Windows XP computer using Dual Boot, i have no XP Cd and desperately need to remove it! EasyBCD does not work on windows XP, iF I just delete the Ubuntu partition all hell breaks loose and i have to reinstall ubuntu to get my XP back. Please help me i am only 12 and i have made a stupid error on my mum and dads computer and will get into serious trouble if i dont fix it soon!. Extra Information: I use the gnu boot loader to choose my operating system, but my mum and dad need my help to open a word document, they have only just grasped double clicking! I installed it off a cd that i made, the computer is 64-bit AMD Athlon with one 160gb hard drive, 512mb ram and a Sis mirage2 128mb shared video card. Its a COMPAQ presario.

• GPL/LGPL/MPL non-code content license

  I want to use a dictionary (basically a text file, and no code) that is included with an open office spell checking plug-in. The plug-in is under the tri-license GPL/LGPL/MPL which I don't understand. is that legal? If it is illegal, what if I wrote a script that uses the said open office plug-in to generate the dictionary (assuming it's technically possible, the script will generate all possible letter permutations, passes it to the plug-in and saves the correct ones) ? I will be using the dictionary in a closed source commercial application. The dictionary is in a language that has very little resources online, and short of making my own dictionary, there aren't any alternatives. Clarification: The script idea I mentioned above, isn't a weird technique, I would generate a document with all possible words and use open office with the plug-in installed to show spelling mistakes and remove them, isn't this the intended use of the plug-in (spell checking)?

  A client of ours has a CMS driven Blog in his hotel site - he would like to use the blog to add depth top his site and add seo benefits relating to the blogs content. The current blog is a basic header / text field and doesn't contain any tagging / meta features. Unfortunately we dont have a .net developer in our team to alter the existing blog and add meta / tagging and there isn't budget to hire one - so I considered using a Tumblr blog - setting it up externally - giving it a blog.hotelname.com address and feeding it into the existing page via tumblrs js - which basically does a document.write into the page - which we can style. I understand from a previous post (Poor CMS blog vs Tumblr embed as a general rule most search engines ignore JS created content - but will the above approach act as an improvement on the existing system for now - as the blog will be setup externally with its own url and also feed into the existing site?   I was thinking, what is needed for a good setup and what are good (free) tools to use? Some of what i came up with are Bug tracking Some good (distributed:P) source control (which means no svn fellas) automated nightly builds or a continuous integration (or anything that automates builds and possibly sends emails when there are build errors) wiki to document decisions, road map or milestones. Something to backup assets (art, sound, etc) What else? and do you have suggestions for any of the above? i pretty much clueless of all of these except for source control

  I keep having trouble getting the correct monitor resolution - every time I reinstall, I happen to use a newer Ubuntu release and the old tricks I used to know no longer work. Instead of leaving a long trail of questions for every new release, I am looking for a more universal and timeless solution. What's the correct way to set the correct monitor resolution with an Nvidia GPU for a screen that does not send EDID values? Note: This is a "dummy" question -- with the help from the chat, I already found the answer, and I am now going to add my own answer to document a solution that is hopefully universal.

• Consultant in a firm that doesn't understand the tech!

  I got the job as a Consultant in a firm that has 3 other programmers. My job is to rewrite all the old system in Java, Spring etc but the staff programmers only know perl and the manager does not know any programming. I am trying to get them to understand that I have 6 projects to rewrite here but no one has design docs or spec. the staff programmers never had to write any documents. Plus I cant get the manager to understand the new java tech stuff.. he keeps asking some of the staff for views on things but the staff don't know it or understand it. Where do I go from here to make the manager understand that the staff programmers or someone has to write a design document so I know what to build. or if I have to write the documents how do I get the information?

For those that can't, JQuery (on document load) has become very popular.* As a result of its ease, many developers are quick to use JQuery or Javascript for layout and style — even without understanding whether or not the problem can be solved with CSS alone. This is illustrated by responses to questions like this one. Is this bad practice? What are the arguments for/against? Should someone who sees this in practice attempt to persuade those developers otherwise? If so, what are the best responses to arguments in favor of JQuery saying it's "so easy"? * Example: Layouts that wish to use vertical layout flow of some kind often run into dead ends with CSS alone — this would include layouts similar to Pinterest, though I'm not sure that's actually impossible with CSS.

• PHP, when to use iterators, how to buffer results?

  When is it best to use Iterators in PHP, and how can they be implemented to best avoid loading all objects into memory simultaneously? Do any constructs exist in PHP so that we can queue up results of an operation for use with an Iterator, while again avoiding loading all objects into memory simultaneously? An example would be a curl HTTP request against a REST server In the case of an HTTP request that returns all results at once (a la curl), would we be better off to go with streaming results, and if so, are there any limitations or pitfalls to be aware of? If using streaming, is it better to replace curl with a PHP native stream/socket? My intention is to implement Iterators for a REST client, and separately a document ORM that I'm maintaining, but only if I can do so while gaining benefits from reduced memory usage, increased performance, etc. Thanks in advance for any responses :-)

• What to learn for a pure practical developer to get better?

  I'm a self taught developer that currently has more than enough experience to hold up against my colleagues waving with their degrees, yet I feel that I'm lacking some important skills to advance further into being a senior level professional in a leading role. More specific in the engineering, planning and designing aspect of software. I've touched the surface of UML, ERM/ERD, have experienced both waterfall and scrum projectmanagement, ... yet I feel there is something missing as every time I start on a new project I don't know where to begin. Should I start diagramming and how? should I start writing an xx page document describing the project on a technical level first, should I dive head first into writing the first tests and code or pseudo-code? I would like to know what, in my case, would be the best way forward, to learn how I can tackle this problem in the future and get better at leading and starting a project. There is not much i don't know about my technical tools and languages but when it gets abstract i'm in trouble.

• How to replace all images in Libreoffice with their description

  I have a very long document containing lots of svg images created using the extension TexMaths. This extension uses the latex installation to create svg image of the inputted equation (or set of equations). The latex code for each equation (or set of equations) is embedded in the image as part of its Description. Such a Description can be accessed by right clicking the svg image and choosing the option Description. I want to replace all the svg images using a suitable macro, by the embedded descriptions. e.g. from The Einstein's famous equation, [svg embedded equation : E = mc 2], tells us that mass can be converted to energy and vice-versa. To The Einstein's famous equation, E = mc^2, tells us that mass can be converted to energy and vice-versa. This will allow me to convert by hand the odt file containing numerous TexMaths equations to LaTeX.
