• how to correctly mount fat32 partition in Ubuntu in order to preserve case

  I've found there are couple of problems might be related how my FAT32 partition was mounted. I hope you can help me to solve the problem. I also included the command I used to help others when they find this post, sorry to those might feel I should use less space. • Emails from web site sometimes blank or gibberish

  Our company has one web site with an online store based on osCommerce. The system sends emails for various reasons, such as password changes, order confirmations, etc., using PHP's mail() function. We occasionally have customers report that the email they received is either blank (email is plain text format) or gibberish (email is in HTML format). In the latter case it's really just HTML that's being displayed as raw text but of course the customers can't read it. In this case the first opening tag's <, and sometimes a few more characters, has gone missing. In an attempt to determine whether this was happening only for certain customers or email systems I configured the web site to send a CC of each message to a service account at my end. Those CC'd messages always arrive intact and display correctly in Outlook. For what it's worth, it seems to happen a little more frequently to Hotmail users but is certainly not limited to them. As the web site is on a shared (Debian) host there's precious little I can do about debugging things from that end, although if I made the right request I feel the hosting company staff would help me, even though they have limited resources to spend on such matters. Any suggestions on what else I might do to try and determine just why those emails are not being received correctly by some customers, yet a CC copy arrives just fine?

• Pasting formatted Excel range into Outlook message

  Hi everyone, I am using Office 2007 and I would like to use VBA to paste a range of formatted Excel cells into an Outlook message and then mail the message. In the following code (that I lifted from various sources), it runs without error and then sends an empty message... the paste does not work. Can anyone see the problem and better yet, help with a solution? • Router gets disconnected once I terminate my SIP application

  Hey, Here is an interesting one, I have a SIP VoIP application which is able to register to the PBX server, and I can invite and see the user call on the callee end receiving an Invite, and on the caller end I see the Ringing response... now here is interesting part, if I close my application with out any notification to the server my router disconnects and restart, after a short while (30 - 150 sec). I could fix that if I would complete the ACK BYE process, but I'm just wondering why does my router hangs up? any ideas? My Router is TNN-Siemens SL2-141, thought this might matter Update: this is what I found: SIP ALG allows two or more simultaneous VoIP phone calls made by VoIP clients through this router. which means that if I disable it I would not be able to do the testing I'm trying so badly to do, and since I don't have access to another router, I must handle it with the bug then... I can say that this never happened to me with one user connecting, but then again I didn't have anyone to invite then, I received from the SIP UAS 503 when I tried to invite an imaginary user. This bug only occur after I connected the second SIP UAC and invited it and closed the application. Adam.

• Networking Home Office

  I'm in the process of building an office in my garden. It's about 25m away from my house. I'd like to run a wired network connection to the office. I'd rather not go down the powerline route, as speeds don't seem great, and I'm likely to want to be moving a lot of data around on the internal network. I have an electrician who is running armoured electrical cable to the office, and is providing conduit for me to run network cable. My questions are: 1) What type of cable to run 2) How I terminate/connect it at both ends I could get something like armoured cat6 utp solid core (like this: http://www.netstoredirect.com/cat6-cable/289166-external-armoured-cat6-utp-solid-cable-price-per-metre.html) which seems fairly robust, but then I have to terminate it. Additionally, where the cable enters my house, there is about another 15m to where my router is situated. I also read this artice: http://www.audioholics.com/audio-video-cables/bjc-cat-network-cable-quality-interview which scared me into realising I don't know what I'm doing!! particularly with termination. Or I could get an "cat6 external patch cable" (e.g http://www.netstoredirect.com/rj45-network-cables/239231-external-cat6-utp-ldpe-rj45-patch-leads.html) and run that in the conduit, and work out how to terminate it at the house end. At the office end I guess I can just plug it into a switch. Any help? Thanks

• ProCurve network expansion

  I've hit a bit of a wall with our network scale-out. As it stands right now: We have five ProCurve 2910al switches connected as above, but with 10GbE connections (two CX4, two fiber). This fully populates the central switch above, there will be no more 10GbE Ethernet connections from that device. This group of switches is not stacked (no stack directive). Sometime in the next two or three months I'll need to add a sixth, and I'm not sure how deep of a hole I'm in. Ideally I'd replace the core switch with something more capable and has more 10GbE ports. However, that's a major outage and that requires special scheduling. The two edge switches connected via fiber have dual-port 10GbE cards in them, so I could physically put another switch on the far end of one of those. I don't know how much of a good or bad idea that would be though. Is that too many segments between end-points? • Vagrant up doesn't load chef configs and doesn't keep an error log

Right now I'm getting a strange error message where it states there's a stack trace file with more info, but that file is no where to be found. • how to cause linux system datetime to run faster than real world datetime?

  Background I want to monitor a running linux system over several days. It's a custom gentoo build and with much custom software on board. This software has ongoing maintenance timers and cron scripts and other clock driven events. I need to verify these scheduled events are working. Problem Waiting for the system to step through daily and weekly activity is a long wait time. And modifying all clock-based timers on the system would be time consuming. Yet, I often want to test a system's end-to-end scheduled activities without waiting a week. Potential Solution Have the linux system under test appear to run through it's daily cycle of activity within just a few hours. My Question for Serverfault Is there a way to cause the system's time to run faster than real world time? My first thought is manipulating the ntp daemon to repeatedly and smoothly increment the clock . Any other ideas? And yes, I know this may have strange side affects. However, the system has no important or time critical interactions with systems outside of itself. And this may be a valuable testing technique.

• How to recover deleted NTFS partitions?

  Last night I made a terrible mistake. I was reinstalling Windows and I accidentally deleted all the partitions on all my drives. I realized my mistake before I had created any partitions, so nothing has been written to any of the disks. I'm currently at my wits' end about what I'll do if I don't manage to recover the data. I have two 1TB drives and a 2TB. One of the 1TB was the drive I was supposed to be reformatting so nothing to be recovered there. I am currently in a Linux livecd. In this article http://support.microsoft.com/kb/245725 Microsoft advises to recreate the exact same partition but choose not to format it, and then recover the backup boot sector from the end of the ntfs volume. But none of the drives I want to recover are bootable drives. So does that mean I do not need to rewrite the boot sector? As in if I simply recreate a partition of the same size it will see all my data? • Symantec Endpoint Protection Virus Definitions

  I have done some Googling but I cannot get a definitive answer certainly not from the Symantec KB. I have a Virtualised Win 2003R2 server 32bit. It has been provisioned to me with Symantec Endpoint Protection 11.0.62xxx CLIENT (not a definitions server) the directory C:\Program Files\Common Files\Symantec Shared\VirusDefs is 750MB IT doesn't contain .tmp directories so it is NOT a corrupt definitions server. IT does contain directories named with a date pattern YYYYMMDD.xxx Some of these folders are 12 months old and I would like to recover the space. The sysmantect forums are full of this stuff but a lot of the postings contain links back to documents that are not specific to End Point Protection Client. It appears that I should be able to delete the older folders and all will be OK. with a service restart however there is a warning about having Live Update Administrator Installed Firstly I have no idea if I have this installed how to I check and secondly can I just ditch these old files and restart ? (smc -stop) Basically I need to claw back some Diskspace from the c: drive which is being filed up with WSUS patches and Symantec files. I have managed to delete one symantec cache through the live update control panel and recovered 470Mb I suppose my last question for those more experienced than myself is, can I simply remove say the two oldest virus definition folders without completely foobaring the End Point protection and the server ? • Dual booting Linux/Win7, Grub refuses to load Win7

  Decided to give Linux Mint a try (Ubuntu's interface annoys me), so I installed it with the intention of dual booting with Windows 7. Installation went fine, but now I can only boot into Linux Mint. Grub lists two Windows 7 menu options, but selecting either of them causes an "unknown file system" error and dumps me into a Grub recovery prompt. There, I have to manually reset the root and prefix options, as they reset hd0,msdos6 when they should be hd0,msdos5. I ran Boot Repair twice, once to fix grub errors, once to rebuild the MBR, but it didn't fix anything. • SharePoint solution package not deploying to all front-ends

  I have a WSP that contains a web part. It's being built using WSPBuilder. Most of the time, the WSP deploys perfectly. However, in two of our test environments (and sadly, in production, too) the WSP doesn't deploy properly to all the web front ends. The assemblies make it into the GAC, and the .webpart files get provisioned. The problem is that a tool part that the web part relies on for configuration simply fails to appear. I've determined that every time this has happened, it has been isolated to a single web front end. I've been able to resolve the issue by doing an stsadm -o deploysolution to re-deploy the solution, and in one instance it was resolved by the end user deactivating/reactivating the feature. Unfortunately, though, this has made it impossible to determine if the control isn't being deployed properly, or if it's some other issue. Any thoughts on this? Could it be a problem with the WSP, or is it likely to be environmental?

• Long Gigabit Ethernet Run

  I am trying to get an Gig-E network between two buildings that are approximately 260 ft. away. While some TRENDnet switches failed to be able to connect to each other over Cat 6 at that distance, two Netgear 5-port Gig-E switches do so just fine. However, it still fails after I put in place APC PNET1GB ethernet surge protectors at each end before the line connects to the respective switches. So I find myself wondering if I simply need to find a better surge protector that doesn't degrade the signal as much (if so, what kind would you recommend?) or if I should give up on copper and use fiber between the buildings. If I opt to go the latter route, I could really use some pointers. It looks like LC connectors are the most common, but I keep running into some others as well. A media converter on each end seems like the simplest solution, but perhaps a Gig-E switch with an SFP port would make more sense? Given a very limited budget, sticking with my existing copper seems best, but if it is bound to be a headache, a 100 meter fiber cable is something I think I can swing cost wise.

• Strange corruption saving from Textpad 5 within Windows 7-64 VirtualBox VM to shared folder with Mac host

  I have a fairly new Window-7 64bit install running in Virtual Box on a MacBook Pro. I'm using TextPad 5 within that environment to edit source files that live on a shared folder that is on the Mac Host. When I save some of these source files, the saved file ends up with some amount of the end of the file repeated one or more times. For example, a file that has this at the end: ... return ttp; }; would, once saved, open up with: ... return ttp; }; }; It is definitely a problem with how the file gets written as opposed to how it's read, because I can see this now matter what app I use to open the file with (NotePad & Word in Windows 7, TextWrangler back in the Mac). I've tried saving as ANSI and UTF-8, and with or without the 'Write Unicode and UTF-8 BOM' checked in TextPad preferences. It doesn't happen with all files though I can't see any pattern about which files do or don't have the problem. It doesn't happen with files written to the Windows 7 c:\ drive. And so far it doesn't happen from other applications saving files, only TextPad. Any ideas? My versions: Textpad 5.4.2 Windows 7 Professional 64-bit, fully up to date VirtualBox 4.0.8 r71778 OSX 10.6.7

For instance, queen should not be in your list but Iraqi should be. List all entries in the file that contain at least one non-letter.

• PORT FORWARDING TO PUT MY WEB SERVER ON THE INTERNET

  I went to http://canyouseeme.org/ to check to see what my external IP address. Regardless of what port I enter, it tells me that the port is blocked. I have a LinkSys router that basically has the default settings with the exception that I have WEP encrptin setup and I have forwarded a few ports, including 80 and 69. I forwarded them to the 192.x.x.103 IP address of the PC which is running IIS. That PC runs Symantec Endpoint Protection, which I right mouse clicked in the tray to Disable. These steps used to make my PC visible so I could host my own web site in IIS on port 80, or some other port, like 69. Yet, the Open Port tool cannot see my IP when it checks eiether port and when I navigate to http://my external ip/ I get "page cant be displayed" At first I was thinking that maybe Comcast is blocking port 80, but 69 doesnt work eiether. I do not see any other blockking set up in my router and, as I mentioned, I went with teh defaults except where discussed. This is a corporate PC and Symantec End Point Protecion is new to it (this previously worked on teh same PC with Symantec Protection Agent), but I thought that disabling Sym End Pt from the tray, that that would effectively neutralize it. I do not have the rights to kill the program itself. Any suggestions on what else to try to make my PC externally visible?

• How to set up Git on remote instance using keys from local machine?

  I have a setup where I can ssh into my remote server (ie a Google Compute instance) from my local machine. I used to be able to clone, push, and pull from a repository on my remote instance without adding any keys to my remote instance, nor adding any new keys to my repository online (just the public key from my local machine). I believe the remote instance was using the keys from my local machine to authenticate my Git pushes and pulls. However, the system broke when I reinstalled the OS on my local machine. Now I when I try to connect with the Github server from my remote instance, I get the following: Cannot clone: [lucas@ecoinstance]~/node$ git clone [email protected]:lucasExample/test.git test Cloning into 'test'... I have never had keys on the remote, and it would push and pull just fine until I re-installed my local OS. I can still clone, push, and pull on my local machine, it is just my remote machine that cannot get authentication. My local OS is Ubuntu 14.04 and my remote OS is Debian Wheezy. Any suggestions would be great. I am not sure how to search for this concept where I can authenticate from a remote instance via my local machine, so any reference are appreciated as well.

• The physical working paradigm of a signal passing on wire.

  Hi, This may be more a question of physics, so pardon me if there's any inconvenience. When I study computer networks, I often read something like this in order to represent a signal, we place some voltage on one end of the wire and the other end will detect the voltage and thus the signal. So I am wondering how a signal exactly passes through wire? Here's my current understanding based on my formal knowledge about electronics: First we need a close circuit to constrain/hold the electronic field. When we place a voltage at somewhere A of the circuit, electronic field will start to build up within the circuit medium, this process should be as fast as light speed. And as the electronic field is being built up, the electrons within the circuit medium are moved, and thus electronic current occurs, and once the electronic current is strong enough to be detected at somewhere else B on the complete circuit, then B knows about what has happend at A and thus communication between A and B is achieved. The above is only talking about the process of sending a single voltage through wire. If there's a bitstream and we need to send a series of voltages, I am not sure which of the following is true: The 2nd voltage should only be sent from A after the 1st voltage has been detected at B, the time interval is time needed to stimulate the electronic field in the medium and form a detectable electronic current at B. Several different voltages could be sent on wire one by one, different electronic current values will exists along the wire simutaneously and arrive at B successively. • Switch Windows 8 from a hybrid MBR/GPT => GPT only on Macbook Pro Retina

  I used DiskUtility+Bootcamp Wizard to setup my hard drive for Windows 8 (final MSDN). Somewhere in that process, the Apple tools turned my GPT disk into a hybrid MBR/GPT. All my 4 primary MBR partitions are used up, so when I try turning on Bitlocker in Windows 8, it complains about not finding a System drive. I know on Windows 8 the Bitlocker setup tries to create the 200(?)MB system partition if it's missing. However with all 4 partitions filled I suspect it can't create system drive = it can't find it = throws back an error like "BitLocker Setup could not find a target system drive. You may need to manually prepare your drive for BitLocker". I've already tried disabling hibernation, swap file etc. Now I'm thinking that if I were to get rid of the MBR scheme altogether, perhaps I can be alright within the GPT world without MBR's 4 primary partitions limit. So, how can I get rid of the MBR tables on the hybrid scheme in a manner that still leaves Mac OS and Windows 8 in working conditions? Details: Hardware is the MacbookPro Retina. • Are HDMI to VGA Adapters Really Device-Specific?

  There are a lot of devices on the market right now (especially mobile devices) with a Micro-HDMI or Mini-HDMI port and no VGA or D-Sub output. Most manufacturers of said devices sell a cable that looks something like this: I have yet to find a cable like this that claims to work on a wide array of devices. In general, these cables claim to work with one specific device only. The way these cables work, I think, is that analog VGA signals are sent from the HDMI port on the device. This should work for devices that have special hardware on the motherboard/GPU capable of driving this. Is it the case that these cables have to be custom designed for each device? Or, is it rather that any device which possesses this special "signaling of analog VGA over the HDMI port" can be made to work with a cable that is physically compatible (i.e. the HDMI end plugs into the device and the VGA end accepts a VGA monitor cable)? Note that I am not looking for a product recommendation, just a conceptual clarification on what exactly these devices are doing. Also, a few remarks: The cables like the one depicted here are not digital to analog converters. I know about these: they are expensive, and they are the ONLY solution if your device only outputs a digital signal and is incapable of driving analog VGA over the HDMI port. The cables like the one depicted here are not straight crossover cables from VGA to HDMI, either. The crossover cables are designed to send a digital HDMI signal over the VGA port's wires; that is, the wire protocol is HDMI (digital) but the physical pinout is the same as VGA, even though nothing analog is happening. Once again, this is not the behavior that, I believe, the devices which I'm talking about in this question are doing. The cabling and devices that this question is about transmit the analog VGA data over the HDMI port (the HDMI port is in the device outputting the data, and the VGA side is the monitor/projector).

• POST Fail via AJAX Request?

  I can't for the life of me figure out why this is happening. This is kind of a repost (submitted to stackoverflow, but maybe a server issue?). I am running a javascript log out function called logOut() that has make a jQuery ajax call to a php script... function logOut(){ var data = new Object; data.log_out = true; $.ajax({ type: 'POST', url: 'http://www.mydomain.com/functions.php', data: data, success: function() { alert('done'); } }); } the php function it calls is here: if(isset($_POST['log_out'])){ $query = "INSERT INTO `token_manager` (`ip_address`) VALUES('logOutSuccess')"; $connection->runQuery($query); // <-- my own database class... // omitted code that clears session etc... die(); } Now, 18 hours out of the day this works, but for some reason, every once in a while, the POST data will not trigger my query. (this will last about an hour or so). I figured out the post data is not being set by adding this at the end of my script... $query = "INSERT INTO `token_manager` (`ip_address`) VALUES('POST FAIL')"; $connection->runQuery($query); So, now I know for certain my log out function is being skipped because in my database is the following data: if it were NOT being skipped, my data would show up like this: I know it is being skipped for two reasons, one the die() at the end of my first function, and two, if it were a success a "logOutSuccess" would be registered in the table. Any thoughts? One friend says it's a janky hosting company (hostgator.com). I personally like them because they are cheap and I'm a fan of cpanel. But, if that's the case??? Thanks in advance. -J
