  • How to safely remove a device blocked by the System process with a handle on \$Extend\$RmMetadata\$Txf

    I have an external HDD which I would like to "safely remove". Unfortunately, my system (Windows 7 x64) complains that "the device is currently in use". Using Process Explorer I discovered which process is holding a handle on the device: Obviously, System is not a process that I can just kill and be done with it. I've done a bit of research and this seems to be a common problem, but no solution has been found so far (except for rebooting the machine, which I'd like to avoid if possible). Is there any solution to this problem that I've missed?

  • Linux Mint 13 is not booting on dual boot computer

    thanks in advance for your time. I have 2 hard drives in my computer a 300 GB drive which is my primary drive for windows 7 and a 1.5 TB drive that I'd used for storage. When I got it I partitioned 500 GB for use in Linux. So, I created a bootable USB and clicked the "Install by Current Operating System" option from Mint. It installed it to the free 500 GB like I'd hoped it would. Now, I can't get it to boot though. I've tried using EasyBCD to create the boot entry and it hangs on a black screen. Thanks. EDIT @ Ryhuk It presents a menu with two options 1) Windows and 2) Mint. This was a menu I created with easyBCD. When I select option 1 it boots to windows fine. When I select option 2 it hangs on a black screen with just a white bar flashing (Can't remember what its called, it marks the current cursor location on a text field) and won't respond to any key presses but alt ctrl del.

  • Nexus One USB freezes Vista SP2 Quad Core

    My Nexus One (N1) will occasionally freeze my Vista 32bit SP2 Quad Core 2.4GHz during POST. MB is ASUS P5N-E SLI with 4GB of RAM. The PC will be booting and when I connect the N1 via USB, the boot sequence will freeze, then continue once I unplug the N1 USB link. It happens whether the N1 is in USB debugging mode and when it is not. I'm not sure whether this is an N1 hw/fw issue, system interaction with my PC, or a result of my N1 development environment (I'm using the Eclipse Galileo IDE for Java Developers, primarily compiling to API Level 7. Eclipse has also occasionally frozen although I haven't established N1 USB cause-and-effect on that issue). Is anyone else experiencing these symptom?

  • Ubuntu xrandr rotate issue

    I've just bought a second monitor for my PC which happens to be a pivot monitor. I've already read lots of forums related to my problem but haven't come across a solution - I have the same symptoms as dozens of posts but no matter whatever I try it just doesn't work. I've already changed the xorg.conf file and added in the device section just under Driver "nvidia" the following for my second monitor: Option "RandRRotation" "on" When I save and reboot I try to rotate my screen with the nvidia X server settings by choosing the second monitor and clicking either "left" or "right" for the rotation. It immediately exits the nvidia settings window and does nothing. I tried within the terminal by typing: xrandr -o right I get the following error: X Error of failed request: BadMatch (invalid parameter attributes) Major opcode of failed request: 154 (RANDR) Minor opcode of failed request: 2 (RRSetScreenConfig) Serial number of failed request: 14 Current serial number in output stream: 14 I actually manage to rotate it with Option "Rotate" "CCW" instead of "RandRRotation". The problem with this solution is that you get the second monitor in the right position, but any window you open on that screen is practically unchangeable. You can't change the size nor move it, making it useless for reading PDFs, which is the main reason why I bought this second screen to help me write my thesis.   • 1080p playback on external monitor

    My system (netbook) specs: 1.6 GHz dual core atom N2600 2 GB DDR3 RAM Integrated GMA3600 GPU Win 7 Professional 32 Bit Daum Pot Player V-1.5 The issue: I downloaded a 1.33 GB sized 1920 x 1080 HD documentary (file extension: mp4) and it plays without a hitch using pot player. However, when I connected an external display (an LED Full HD 24" monitor) using D-Sub, the video plays fine but the player controls become very unresponsive. For instance, it takes about 40 seconds to exit full screen while playing. I tried: Installed/updated all the latest monitor drivers Updated the VGA drivers for GMA3600 No other programs ran while the video played, with most unwanted services and background processes disabled/killed. CPU usage goes only up to 49% when the video plays Question: What may I do in order to improve the player response/video playback experience? Do I need to play with (or change) Pot Player's default video decoders, etc?

  • Issue booting Linux Mint from Live CD?

    I had Windows 8 and Linux Mint 15 dual booted on my laptop. When I first installed Linux, I wasn't able to load into because the grub would not show. To fix this, I used boot-repair from a Live CD. This time, I updated to Windows 8.1 and it showed a watermark telling me my secure boot wasn't configured properly. I then went and enabled secure boot (BIOS) and I believe it was after that that the Grub would not show once again. I tried to boot from a Linux CD again but when I try, it gives me the following errors: error: failure reading sector 0x0 from 'hd1' error: you need to load the kernel first. Press any key to continue... Before, it was giving me an error with sector 0x6d200 or something instead of 0x0. I am completely unsure of what to do. I do not know what other details to give except that this my have happened after I enabled secure boot, and I actually clicked reset to default setting so I am unsure if any other settings were changed in the BIOS menu.

    I need to move the folder in which the Flash plugin saves its temporary files (so NOT the browser cache folder). Normally, the plugin saves its buffered content in the default temporary folder of the operating system. However, I do not want to move that folder. In other words, I only need to change the folder which flash uses. My operating system is Windows 7 64-bit. I am using the latest version of the flash plugin.

  • Firefox 3.6.3 on Snow Leopard 10.6.3 - symbolic link to command line binary doesn't work?

    I have Firefox 10.6.3 installed on Mac OS X Snow Leopard from the DMG. I can run firefox from the terminal using /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin. However, if I create a symbolic link: sudo ln -s /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin /bin/firefox then it refuses to run, or at least display. When I issue "firefox" from the terminal, I can see the process in top, but never get the GUI to appear. :/ = ls -lr /bin/firefox lrwxr-xr-x 1 root wheel 52 May 5 15:19 /bin/firefox - /Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/MacOS/firefox-bin Any ideas?   • Is it me or is developing web based data entry GUIs a big pain?

    Maybe it's me or maybe it isn't. I don't have a huge amount of experience of developing web based data entry software but do have some. I used to do it quite a bit years ago. Used to use Oracle Forms, Visual Studio, various 4th generation languages, and performing the user interface layout used to be a snap. Now doing the user interface for developing web applications seems to be a huge pain in the rear. Just trying to get text entry fields and widgets to go where they are supposed to go on the screen is a total pain. You have to know Javascript, CSS, JQuery, HTML, etc. There must be an easier way to develop data entry forms that produce the needed underlying code for a web page. Maybe I'm just not looking in the right place. There must be some WYSIWYG GUI development tools for the web for developing data entry forms out there. Anybody know of any?

  • converting huge MPEG audio files to something smaller

    I've got some large MPEG audio files (144 MB each) that I'm looking to convert to something smaller so I can send them out as attachments to an email. Any suggestions on the software to use? I'm looking for something free that will run on Windows. I don't really care what the destination file is, mp3 would be nice. If there's a web service out there that would do this without the need to download any software to my machine, that would be even better, but I would be more than happy just getting it done any way I can.   • Computer causing WiFi interference?

    I came back from college and brought my desktop computer. Family recently switched to Verizon FIOS and got a new router because of it. Unfortunately, my connection to the new wifi network is awful, with the download speeds (tested through speedtest.net) fluctuating wildly and often dropping below 1.5 Mbps. A laptop in the same room gets 20 Mbps. I've tried a new wireless card, thinking that mine got damaged in the move home but no luck. Here's where it gets weird: if I place the laptop near the computer, the laptop's download speeds often suffer greatly. Pulling the laptop away always fixes this. So now I'm under the impression that there's something in the computer (which I built a year ago and has had 0 issues up to this point) is causing an insane amount of wireless interference. Also bizarre: the upload speeds seem unaffected by this problem. On the laptop and desktop, upload speeds are generally around 5 Mpbs. Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to test said theories would be fantastic.

  • Ofice for Mac 2011 does not start, how do I repair the database?

    After a TimeMachine restore; Office 2011 is having kittens over permissions it would seem. Having attempted a 'repair' out of Disk Utility, am still seeing: there is a problem with the Office database upon startup, after which Word/Excel work without issues. Outlook on the other hand won't even start. Given the obvious message here "You do not have write access to the Outlook application folder" – where is the DB located to check?

  • Revert "Deny" permissions in Windows 7

    I made a very dumb mistake and I am hoping there is a way to fix this without having to boot in through a Linux Live CD and extracting the data. My user login to my Windows 7 system is: John John is part of the Administrator's group. I have a folder called "C:\Users\John" I tried to make this folder accessible to ONLY John (and deny from all other Administrators) by going to the Folder, Right Click Secturity tab and then selecting all the checkboxes under "Deny" while having selected the "Administrators" group. As a result, I cannot access this folder from any of the accounts: "John" and "Administrator" as both of them belong to the Administrators groupd and deny permissions out-weigh the "Allow Permissions" Is there any way I could revert this back?     I'd like to work offline (I'm flying to the US twice this month), to do this I need access to a linux development server. When I work from home I boot a VirtualBox VM and that acts as my dev server for the day (providing Apache, PHP & MySQL to run my server side code). However, I'd like to work with my VM when I'm not connected to a network. I have my Ubuntu VM guest set up with a bridge connection so it can serve HTTP and provide SSH access from inside my local network. I've tried to manually configure my network settings on both Mac OSX (the host) and Ubuntu (the guest) but I can't even ping my own NIC address (127.0.0.1 can, 192.168.21.x I can't) in OS X when I unplug the cable.   • Permissions on mac for itunes library with multiple users - idea

    I currently have a lot of music on an external drive and my itunes set up from there. However, periodically, when the external drive isn't connected, itunes will default back to the library location of my home directory user path. I don't want to mess with an external drive, as my mac HD is large enough to house the music collection. However, I have 4 family members - all with their own logins - using this same gob of music. I don't want 4 copies of the library, only one with all libraries referencing it. So, what I want to do is: 1 - move all music files to a shared directory at /Macintosh HD/users/music. I created this directory and adjusted permissions, so all four users can read and write to this directory. 2 - get all four accounts to reference this library instead of the external or local home locations I am hoping I can just check the box to keep library organized in my account, which is the admin and let itunes move it all. Then delete current libraries for each account and re-add from the new shared location. Will the itunes organization process cause permissions issues either by setting permissions to all the files access to my account only or write permissions or any other 'gotcha'? I am having a hard time coming up with a smooth solution that won't break everything and cause me to have mega duplicates or access issues. I would prefer not to do any xml library file editing if possible. Am I dreaming? Thanks for help.

  • Cloning Win 7 installation from MBR to GPR drive and make it bootable

    I've seen threads on similar topics - such as this one - but the answers never seem to solve how to make it bootable. I have Win 7 64-bit on a PC installed on a 2tb MBR volume. The motherboard is UEFI compatible. I just installed a secondary internal 3TB drive which will be partitioned as GPT. Is there a relatively easy way to clone my installation over to the new drive and have that drive be bootable? I have used EaseUS Partition Master to clone the C volume to the D volume, but that would not boot and I assume the issue is that one is MBR and one is GPT. Is there a process to do this?

  • Best way to rip DVD movies to ISO files

    I'm trying to backup my DVD collection. I have Handbrake, and will eventually experiment with the best settings to use. For now, I'd like to backup the DVD's to ISO files, that i can mount and then use Handbrake on later, or burn back on to DVD should the original get damaged. I have a WD TV box that is capable of playing ISO files also. What's the best program for doing this? I'm not so much concerned with file size.

  • Using XFCE4 with awesome

    When I got tired of using the standard XFCE window manager, xfwm, I simply installed openbox and selected "XFCE/Openbox" session in the GDM login screen. This was very convenient because I didn't want the plain Openbox session in which there are no network-manager, no panels, nothing. Now I have installed awesome: I really like the idea of tiling window managers. But after I launched it, everything went wrong. Absence of XFCE panels isn't anything bad, but subpixel-aliased fonts were somehow turned on, and that was really awful. I tried to login in XFCE, kill openbox/xfwm and start awesome, but that didn't worked: xfce4-session keeps restarting it's predefined WM, and killing it kills the whole X session too. And I didn't found the configuration for a dropdown list in GDM either. How can I start XFCE session with awesome as a WM?
