  I have a time management application that I use at home quite a lot and have running most of the time. At home, I have a desktop PC and a couple of laptops scattered around the house...all networked together. Unfortunately, the application I use is not multi-user and I risk losing/corrupting data if it has been left running on one computer inadvertently while I start using it on another one in another part of the house. I use Live Mesh to automatically keep the application's database synced across the different computers and I just need some way of making sure that I don't start using the application on another computer before closing it down on the previous one. Anyone know of any Windows software that can detect if an application is running simultaneously on different computers on my network, and warn me if I am about to have two open at the same time?

• How to identify cause of system lock on debian squeeze?

  I have a desktop system at work with debian squeeze installed. Every couple days or so, when I come in in the morning, the system appears to be asleep and won't wake up. I suspect it goes into power save mode and then doesn't receive the wake up signal when I click the mouse or touch the keyboard. Does anyone know where I should look in order to start tracking this down? Like log files, etc? I doubt it, but maybe the fact that I'm using a mac aluminum usb keyboard and a wireless usb mouse (that has an off switch) has something to do with it? Maybe, when I turn my mouse off at the end of the day, the system loses track of the device somehow? I dunno :P. Thanks in advance.

  I have a desktop system installed with a 250 GB hdd (seagate sata II) this system is having a power supply of 500W (not sure if it is 650W but not more than that) the power supply is a local brand. Will it be safe to attach a second 250 GB sata II hdd on the same system. Safe in the sense that the system may not fall short of power at any time. My system's config is as follows Core2Duo processor Mercury cabinet having an additional fan (small one) sata dvd writer 52X windows xp sp 2 ASUS motherboard (intel G965 express chipset) If the above specified power supply is not sufficient for above configuration of system then please suggest the appropriate power supply (including watts)

• Machine only responds to network requests from machines it is pinging

  I have two machines. WOPR: Ubuntu server edition 10.10 LTS 32 bit Adam Selene: Windows 7 home premium 64 bit / Ubuntu Desktop 10.10 LTS 64 bit I want to be able to SSH from Adam Selene to WOPR, so I connect them to the same network. Here's where things get weird. I cannot connect to WOPR in any way under normal circumstances. But, if WOPR is pinging Adam, then it starts responding to ping requests, HTTP gets, and SSH tunnels. I'm an amateur, and brand new to Ubuntu server, so I suspect there's a misconfiguration somewhere, but there's an off chance it's a bug in the OS. Does anyone know what might cause this behavior?   I have noticed that thumbnails on Mac OS X don't seem to be generated every time I open a folder, but to be somehow "cached" instead. I wasn't able, however, to find a folder where they clearly look to be stored. I thought then they could be saved as some kind of metadata; i found, however, that when deleting a file (e.g. from the Desktop) and saving immediately after a file by the same name, the preview for the previous file is showed for ~ a second. Are they stored separately from data? How and when are they invalidated (e.g. only when a file by the same name appears in the same directory)?

  Is there a way to change the desktop wallpaper in Windows 7 Starter Edition? I wanted to do that on my new netbook, just to find out that there is no "Customize" option in the control panel. Microsoft obviously wants to keep the netbook users rather rigidly from customizing their machines. It isn't even possible to edit the picture itself in the C:\Windows\Web\Wallpaper\Windows\ directory, due to lack of rights. From what I can tell only the user "Trusted Installer" would have enough rights to do so... Update: With your help I found two programs that are able to bypass Microsoft's limitations: Starter Wallpaper Changer (Thanks to Sopan and javier. • How do you get around security warnings when redirecting AppData?

  I've recently set up folder redirection for my user profile in a domain. For now, I've redirected AppData, Desktop, Pictures, Documents and Favorites. So far, so good. But now I've noticed a quite disturbing side effect of the whole thing. Whenever I click any of my pinned elements on the task bar, I get the following warning: The shortcuts get synced as well and are no longer trusted. They're located at \\DFS\UserData\Profiles\OliverSalzburg\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch\User Pinned\TaskBar That seems like it could be a problem when rolling it out to the whole company.

• Moving users folder on Windows Vista/Seven to another partition

  When I format the computer and reinstall Windows, my first step is move the "my documents" folder to another partition. In Windows XP it wasn't enough because the desktop folder and another user folders was in the primary partition. Now in Windows Seven and Vista we can use HardLinks to "move" the folder to another partition and Windows and another programs will think that the data is in the primary parition. What the fastest and secure steps to move the Users folder to another partition and to create the hardlinks correctly? Thank you very much!

• Cannot increase my screen resolution

  I am trying to install my new monitor but my Graphics Adapter (Mobile Intel(R) 915GM/GMS,910GML Express Chipset Family) does not offer a resolution of 1920x1080 in the [Display Properties Settings] window. It only offers up to 1360x768. Can anyone explain to me how I can increase this number to the correct resolution. The monitor does show my the windows desktop, albeit at a lower resolution which is being stretched to fill the screen, making it look very blurry. I have installed the "Monitor Drivers" I found on the disk supplied with new monitor, but these do not appear to have made any difference. The Intel software that comes with the graphics card has an information window containing lots of info about the card and the monitor itself. I have placed this on a webpage so you can examine it if helpful. Many thanks with your help in getting my Christmas present to work! Patrick P.S.: Before I got this screen I checked to see if my graphics card could cope with such a large screen.

• Belkin Wireless G router not working on Windows 7

  I have a Belkin F5D7230-4 Wireless G router which used to work on XP. I have a clean Windows 7 install (on the same desktop PC), and it just won't work. Device Manager lists the adapter as a USB device, but it says "The drivers for this device are not installed", even though the driver installer said the installation was OK. Manage Wiresless Networks says "wireless is not currently enabled". The WLAN AutoConfig service is running. My specific question is which of the two symptoms above should I go for first? Should I try to fix the driver installation somehow, or should I try to enable wireless? Is one caused by the other, or is this two independent problems? Any other thoughs that could help me are also appreciated.

• Is it possible to use WebMatrix with pure IIS?

  I'd like to check out WebMatrix for publishing our site to IIS automatically (right now, I have to zip it up, copy it out, Remote Desktop into the server, unzip it, etc). However, every example I can find on how to setup WebMatrix involves Azure, or using a .publishsettings file that you'd get from your hosting provider. I'm curious if I can publish to a normal, every day IIS server running on Windows Server 2008. So far, all I've done to the IIS server is install Web Deploy, which I believe is the protocol that WebMatrix uses to publish. When I enter the Remote Site Settings screen, I select Enter settings. I select Web Deploy as the protocol, type in my NT domain credentials (I'm an Admin on that server). I put in the site URL for the Site Name and Destination URL. When I click Validate Connection, I get: Am I doing something wrong, or is this just not possible to do?

• Nvidia restricted driver = invisible menus when using VNC

  I'm installing 9.04 on an HTPC, so I will often VNC in to work on it from my laptop. After the initial install, I updated everything, and it all went fine. I was able to VNC using Ubuntu's built-in "Remote Desktop" with no problems. I then installed the 180.xx restricted nvidia drivers and rebooted. Everything worked fine on my TV, but when I VNC'd into it, all I could see was the background and title bar. When I'd pull down a menu, the menu was visible on the TV but not over the VNC link. I assume that means the GUI was now using some sort of overlay for the menus, which is fine, but what's the best way to make them visible over VNC? Clarification: I know I can turn off all visual effects and solve the problem, but I'm looking for a way to see the menus over VNC while keeping the GUI pretty...

  We are building WPF applications which will be deployed on Citrix. Currently you simply see a blue window under Citrix, although the app runs fine on the server itself. There do seem to be some issues detailed on the net. Citrix forum discussion Microsoft hot fix We've applied the hot fix but this does not appear to fix the problem for us at least. Also, found this identical question on this site, but it had been removed by the author, so no answers. I'm running citrix 4.5 on a Windows 2003 server. I am trying to publish a WPF app (any WPF app has this problem) and all I get is a blue rectangle where the app is supposed to be. The rectangle is the exact size and shape of the window I expect, but it is just blue (looks like the color of the citrix desktop background). Any ideas?

• LInux (Ubuntu Karmic) equivalent to Pawsense

  I now work from a home office - much to the delight of my cats. One in particular likes to come for a hug several times a day. That in itself is fine but he tends to sit on my laptop keyboard whilst I'm working on my desktop and vice-versa. Also he'll walk across any keyboard I'm actually using at the time. I've found Pawsense and would like to know if anyone can suggest a Linux equivalent (or some incantations to achieve the same). Training him out of sitting on the keyboard is likely to prove fruitless (a suggested here). He's far more pig-headed than I am. This conversation discusses some utilities like xlock et al but I'd prefer if possible to have something more along the lines of Pawsense that doesn't lock the keyboard but "simply" intercepts cat-like typing. • what can I do with an old but working PC [closed]

  I have an old Dell optiplex GX240 on Pentium 4 1.8Ghz and 256MB Ram (or was it 512MB). It's still in working condition but it's getting slow for me and i wanted to optimize it. I just want that old box to be usable even for simple desktop use (email, surfing, chat). I also have to note that my parents prefer use it over a laptop for some reason. Treat it as a "box-type netbook". unlike the other threads that they all prefer sending away or use as file server, firewall and that, i am looking for suggestions on how to keep it usable as the main PC. any suggestions? OS perhaps?

• Issue Connecting two home networks

  Hi, I have a home networking question. I have two DLINK wireless/wired routers in my house, connected to the Internet ISP. There are a 2 computers on each of the two networks. Network1: has 192.168.0.0 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.1 - 192.168.0.10, with COMP1 having a fixed IP of 162.168.0.1 Network2: has 192.168.0.100 (gateway) Valid IP'S range - 192.168.0.101 - 192.168.0.110 with COMP2 having a static IP of 162.168.0.101, a WIRELESS printer on 192.168.0.102 Both routers have a netmask of 255.255.255.0 My need is to connect the two routers, so that I can Remote desktop for COMP1 to COMP2 and viceversa, and COMP1 to connect to the wireless printer on Network2. can anyone help to set this up so that the both networks can talk to each other. • "Fuzzy" Display Problems on New OpenSUSE 11.3 Install

  Hi, I have a old Desktop that has a new installation of OpenSUSE 11.3 on it. To get straight to the point, whenever I try to start-up OpenSUSE, my display goes "fuzzy" (almost like a badly tuned TV) and sometimes (not always) my monitor goes black and says "Out of Range: 15.6kHz/49Hz": I assumed that this was a driver problem, so I download the drivers from nvidia and ran the shell script, completed and rebooted. Then OpenSUSE failed to boot with something like "nscd failed to start". At that point I decided to re-install and I did, but this time I tried un-checking "Automatic Configuration" to see if that helped. Got through the install and still have a problem. Unfortunately, my Linux troubleshooting skills are non-existent, so has anyone got any ideas on what could be the problem (is it the display driver?) and how I can fix the problem?

• Sometimes tabs in notepad++ won't make a new window when dragged out

  Long-time Linux user on a Windows 7 machine, using Notepad++ to edit multiple text files. Sometimes I can drag a tab out of the notepad++ window onto the desktop to get a new notepad++ window. This is a very nice feature. But sometimes when I try to drag a tab out, nothing happens. I don't see what is different about these tabs or the files they contain. It is repeatable; the same tab still won't make a new window. I'm not familiar enough with Windows and its strange ways to begin to guess what is going on, unless it's a bug. How can I make all tabs draggable-to-new-windowable, no exceptions?

• ATI Radeon Drivers works with which linux distribution and version?

  I have ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. Almost every new linux distribution seems to have an issue with it, when i install the drivers. Working without utilizing the graphics card leaves me so unproductive. So i made a plan to use older versions of linux, any distribution suitable as a desktop distribution. UPDATE: The kind of problems that i am facing are, 1) After installing drivers the system boots and hangs, 2) There are unusual lines over the screen 3) After upgrade system doesn't start properly(hangs the usual old way) The kind of answers i am looking for is, distribution X(the newer the version the better) doesn't have the above problem after installing drivers for ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5850 graphics card. UPDATE: The new drivers released by AMD seems to fix all the issues, although they are still beta Thanks

• Ubuntu 12.04 blank screen after login

  I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit on a machine, everything went well accordingly but after login it just gives me a blank screen. During startup after BIOS message it shows "Out of range" error and comes to login window after logon it's just a blank screen. even after somehow it comes to an empty desktop screen i dont see the Unity bar or anything like that (Can change wallpaper, and system setting though). And can't goto Console mode by pressing Ctrl+Alt+F1 - it returns "Out of range" error. System is new AMD Sempron with 2 Gigs of RAM has NVIDIA GeForce 6150SE-based graphic chipset. any ideas on this?

• Why would http & https be blocked, even in safe mode with firewall disabled?

  I have a windows 7 machine (dell studio xps). Everything on it seems to be in working order. The network device says it has internet connectivity, and indeed I can ping websites, transfer files via ftp, connect to vpns and remote desktop, but the web won't work. I've disabled the windows firewall and still no go. There are no other firewalls installed. The computer came with a trial of norton 360 so I also used the norton removal tool (which solved a similar problem on another computer for me previously). Any thoughts?

  I'm new here and also with networking but i can't set internet conection for some vlan created. I have a Cisco CE500 switch and created 4 vlans define by the roles in the switch. Vlan 2: Servers (role) (port 3-4) Vlan 3: Desktop (role) (port 5-8) Vlan 4: Guest (role) (port 9-12) Vlan 1 is default, Connect to the ADSL Modem/Router Port 2 assign to the Router Role (vlan 1) The switch is connected on port2 the ADSL Modem (DHCP) 192.168.2.254 The goal is: All Vlan should have internet connection. Vlan 2 and 3 should see each other but not Vlan 4 I can enter the switch CLI but dont know which command to enter. Thanks 4 ur time and replies Jennifer
