• Answers to “What source control system do you use?” (and some winners)

  About a month ago I posed a question here on my blog SQL Server devs–what source control system do you use, if any? (answer and maybe win free stuff) in which I asked SQL Server developers to answer the following questions: Are you putting your SQL Server code into a source control system? If so, what source control server software (e.g. TFS, Git, SVN, Mercurial, SourceSafe, Perforce) are you using? What source control client software are you using (e.g. TFS Team Explorer, Tortoise, Red Gate SQL Source Control, Red Gate SQL Connect, Git Bash, etc…)? Why did you make those particular software choices? Any interesting anecdotes to share in regard to your use of source control and SQL Server? I had some really great responses (I highly recommend going and reading them). I promised that the five best, most thought-provoking, responses (as determined by me) would win one of five pairs of licenses for Red Gate SQL Source Control and Red Gate SQL Connect; here are the five that I chose (note that if you responded but did not leave a means of getting in touch then you weren’t considered for one of the prizes – sorry): In general, I don't think the management overhead and licensing cost associated with TFS is worthwhile if all you're doing is using source control. To get value from TFS, at a minimum you need to be using team build, and possibly other stuff as well, such as the sharepoint integration. If that's all you need, then svn with Tortoise would be my first choice. If you want to add build automation later, you can do this with cruisecontrol (is it still called that?), JetBrains, etc. For a long time I thought that Redgate's claims about "bridging the SSMS-VS divide" were a load of hot air, since in my experience anyone who knew what they were doing was using Visual Studio, in particular SSDT and its predecessors. However, on a recent client I was putting in source control for the first time, and I discovered that the "divide" really does exist. That client has ended up using svn with Redgate SQL Source Control, with no build automation, but with scope to add it in the future. Gavin Campbell I think putting the DB under source control is a great idea.  I have issues with the earlier versions of SQL Source Control in that it provides little help in versioning the DB. I think the latest version merges SQL Compare and SQL Source Control together.  Which is how it should have been all along. Sure I have the DB scripts in SVN, but I can't automate DB builds and changes without more tools.  Frankly I'm surprised databases don't have some sort of versioning built into them. Nick Portelli Source control has been immensely useful and saved me from a lot of rework on more than one occasion.  I have learned that you have to be extremely careful checking in data.  Our system is internal only so during the system production run once a week, if there is a problem that I can fix easily(for example, a control table points to a file in the wrong environment), I'll do it directly in production so the run can continue as soon as possible since we have a specified time window.  We do full test runs to minimize this but it has come up once or twice.  We use Red-Gate source control to "push" from the test environment to the production environment.  There have been a couple of occasions where the test environment with the wrong setting was pushed back over the production environment because the change was made only in production.  Gotta keep an eye on that. Alan Dykes Goodness is it manual.  And can be extremely painful at times.  Not only are we running thin, we are constrained on the tools we can get ($$ must mean free).  Certainly no excuse, and a great opportunity to improve my skills by learning new things.  But...  Getting buy in a on a proven process or methodology is hard, takes time, and diverts us from development.  If SQL Source Control is easy to use and proven oh boy could you get some serious fans around here!  Seriously though, as the "accidental dba" of this shop any new ideas / easy to implement tools can make a world of difference in productivity and most importantly accuracy.  Manual = bad. :) John Hennesey (who left his email address) The one thing I would love to know more about is the unique challenges of working with databases as source code - you can store scripts, but are they written as deployment scripts with all the logic about how to apply them to an existing DB? • MySQL Online Database

  Can anyone suggest a good online free MySQL database. I've tried four till now: db4free FreeMySQL onPhP 000webhost Either of them gave me an timeout error on my connect file or actively restricted connection to it, meaning the host won't allow a remote connection to the database. If there isn't any good online database can I create my own server using my computer, since it gets rarely turned off and when my server is offline I could return an error message saying that the server is currently offline. My final objective is to have a simple comment box for a webpage. Witch I believe it won't need a massive data storage with 3 columns (id, name, comment) NOTE: Can't post more then two links yet.

• Enable networking without the gnome-applet

  I've switched to XMonad as my window manager. Sometimes when I put my laptop to hibernate, it's hanging and won't shut down. I have to force it off by pressing the powerbutton for 5 seconds. After I boot again, I can't connect to the internet. I have to logout, go to gnome, and after logging in, I rightclick the network applet icon and select the enable networking options. After that, my internet is working again. Is there a way to do this via the command line or another option?

• Can python and php work together?

  I am having a mobile app created for ios. The developers built the app in php. The app requires an algorithm so I found another programmer to develop it. The algorithm programmer built the algorithm in python. The developers refuse to finish the app because they say it won't work with python, while the programmer insist it will. The programmer says put the algorithm in its on server and connect then over http. Will this work and I'd so how risky is it to future problems?

  I just downloaded Steam Beta from here. I installed the package, and when I start steam, I get the following It then says, unable to connect. When I start it from the terminal, I get this error. SteamUpdater: Error: Download failed: http error 407 Since I get a 407 error, it is related to Proxy Authentication. I have set up my http_proxy, ftp_proxy, https_proxy environment variables. I am behind an authenticated proxy server. How do I get Steam working from behind a proxy server?

• Wecam not detected

  after much research ang googling, my web cam is still not recognized. In the time of Ubuntu 11.04 it was working fine. I did a fresh install of 11.10 and not more web cam. All the cheese and camera monotor and V4L tests and all failes with "cannot connect to /dev/video0" or equivalent. The output of 'lsusb' shows the webcam Bus 001 Device 002: ID 05a9:2640 OmniVision Technologies, Inc. OV2640 Webcam What I noticed is that neither /dev/v4l nor /dev/video* exists. If I re-install the v4l package all the /dev/video* are created, but no /dev/v4l If I reboot the /dev/video* are NOT created. I think the trouble is that the device are not created at boot time. I have a DELL Inspiron 1525 and until this fresh install the web cam worked fine. Can somebody help ? Thanks a lot Richard

  I installed Ubunto 12.04 onto a brand new Toshiba Satellite C850 64 bit laptop. Wlan does not work, Tries to connect, gives up after some time. $Windows7 works 100%. There appears to be a problem with the driver. The actual hardware is a rtl8188ce chip. The firmware & driver loaded by Ubunto is for the rtl8192ce chip. How can I get and install a driver and firmware for Ubunto 12.04 and rtl8188ce?

  I've never had problems installing and configuring mysql server in kubuntu but now it's just being stubborn, here's my issue: I installed the packages mysql-server, mysql-client (both 5.1), the server package asked me to put a root password, which I did, it then started saying "access denied", on anything Later on, I decided to purge the packages and re-install and gave a tweak to the my.cnf and not it says ERROR 2002 (HY000): Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/var/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock' (2) Please, is there a way to do a fresh start on this and do it right this time? I don't know if I'm missing something but the /var/lib/mysql is not empty but there is no .pid, now the mysql service won't start, there is no mysql.sock either Any help appreciated

• No rear audio when front jack is connected

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual booted. When I connect something on front audio jack then rear audio is not working. I have tried changing analolog-output-headphones.conf file. After changing that alsamixer showing that both centre and surround not muted with full volum. • libssh2 and simultaneous connections

  I'm writing a node.js C++ module using the C library libssh2. The module is supposed to be a bridge to connect to SSH over HTTPS. Right now, I'm still in the design/learning phase of v8 API and C++, and I have a design question: libssh2 is a C library, all its methods are global. From what I see in the examples, libssh2 can only handle one connection at a time. If I want to allow simultaneous connections to different SSH servers, do I have to fork a process to completely separate the libssh2 "instances", or is forking a thread enough? I don't know enough of the separation limit used there. Any idea on how to handle this is appreciated.

• Wireless icon shows grey box

  Hello I am running kubuntu 13.10. I had to install using the server disk and did a upgrade to the desktop version to enable full disk encryption using multiple drives. For some weird reason when I move my mouse over to the wireless icon which has an red circle and a line through it, up pops a grey box with nothing in it. This stops me from chosing which ssid's I can connect to. Ubuntu has the drive for my wirless card and it is working verified using #lspci | grep Network Centrino Wireless-N 2230 I am connected to my network from the install wizard but I need to be able to choose which networks. Please help.

• Setting up SANED with sane-test

  I'm trying to setup a network service for running saned (running the sane-test backend) on Ubuntu 12.10, running it on a virtualbox. I followed the directions found here: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/ScanningHowTo and i got to the point where if i use a front-end like xsane, or use the command scanimage -d test i get the desired behaviour. (i get the test image). But when i try to use the network demon to access the backend (from the localhost) i get Failed to connect. I used telnet on 127.0.0.1 6566 and i got the following error: saned: symbol lookup error: saned: undefined symbol: sanei_w_init I'm a linux newbie, so i could be making some stupid mistake. Any ideas on how to fix this? Thanks [update]After posting this question i logged out, logged back in and it worked. After a few days i tried again and it gave the same error as before. Any help?

  I have had to rebuild my Windows 7 PC and all has gone fairly well until I tried to connect to a Samba share on a legacy Linux box running Redhat 8. No matter what combination of domain / user /password I would just see the same message of: "The specified network password is not correct." This is a misleading error, very annoying and a little confusing until I found a hint that Windows 7 default authentication was not supported on older Samba implementations. I guess I figured this out once before as it used to work before the rebuild! Anyway here is the solution: 1. Control Panel->System and Security->Administrative Tools->Local Security Policy (or run secpol.msc). 2. Select Local Policies->Security Options->Network security: LAN Manager authentication level. 3. Select 'Send LM and NTLM - use NTLMv2 session security if negotiated' and click OK. #

  Ok, so here's the thing,I installed wingpanel in UBUNTU 10.10, i removed the gnome-panels (yes, both). In the wingpanel itself there's no NETWORK indicator, so i google it and in some forums, some guy wrote that you have to install "indicator-network". I did it, and it solved the network indicator in the wingpanel, BUT now everytime i turn on my computer, the connection takes like 2 minutes or more to connect, when before installing this thing it did it immediately. How can i solve this? any help?

• Can't ping Ubuntu laptop from my LAN

  My laptop has Ubuntu 10.10 and is connected to my router with full internet access, yet I can't ping it from other computers on my LAN. I tried the following: I can successfully ping those other computers from my Ubuntu laptop, so I didn't accidentally connect to someone else's network. I can successfully ping my Ubuntu laptop from itself, though I don't know if that means anything. I haven't messed with iptables at all, so it currently doesn't have any rules set that would cause it to reject anything. I made a DHCP reservation for my laptop's MAC address in my router to make sure I was always using the correct IP address. Please note that I am using a "command line only" install of Ubuntu, so I can't use any GUI network config tools. The reason I want to ping it is because I am trying to run an NFS server on the laptop, yet despite correctly setting it up I cannot access the NFS volume on another computer because it isn't even visible on the network right now.

I lost connection the public network and I tried to restart networking with /etc/init.d/networking restart and got the error "SIOCSIFFLAGS: cannot assing requested IP and Failed to bring up eth1". I even added the IPs in the interfaces file but still got an error on restarting. I could not ping my default gateway. A work around was to add ifconfig eth 0 x.x.x.x route -add default gw x.x.x.z I could then connect to the public network. What could be the issue here?

• Gateway IP for eth0 and gateway IP for pptp vpn are same

  My problem is.. 1) I'm using laptop at school. 2) In school, the default gateway for ethernet is 192.168.1.1. 3) I want to connect to a pptp vpn server. The gateway over the vpn connection is also 192.68.1.1. (The VPN server assigns 192.168.100.1 to my laptop and I confirmed that it is not used in school.) In this situation, there is no problem in Windows 7. I think it is enough smart to distinguish two different gateways with the same IP. All connection requests may be forwarded to the vpn gateway. But, in Ubuntu, I cannot access a file server in the remote site. I guess every connection request is forwarded to the ethernet gateway. How can I send all connection requests to the vpn gateway whose IP is same as the ethernet gateway?
