  • Collecting and viewing statistical data on website usage? Want to give Google Analytics the boot.

    I have always been somewhat reluctant to "outsource" site statistics to Google. We have an Apache server running on a Windows server. I am pretty sure all the foundation to collect the needed visitor data are there. I would like to stop using GA, and use some form of application where the data does not travel to a third party but remains at the host, or at least travels to the remote administrator, if it is a log analyzer in a browser. What are my options?

    Hi, I've a Virtual Private Server with Windows 2003 and root access. This server mainly acts as a web hosting machine (IIS, Apache). Additionally it is used as a mail server. Is it possible to isolate a mailserver (for example HMailServer) by using VMware Server on Windows 2003 in order to avoid potential viruses moving from the guest into the host system?   • Is it important to reboot Linux after a kernel update?

    I have a few production Fedora and Debian webservers that host our sites as well as user shell accounts (used for git vcs work, some screen+irssi sessions, etc). Occasionally a new kernel update will come down the pipeline in yum/apt-get, and I was wondering if most of the fixes are severe enough to warrant a reboot, or if I can apply the fixes sans reboot. Our main development server currently has 213 days of uptime, and I wasn't sure if it was insecure to run such an older kernel.

    I understand domain-joined computers have machine accounts in AD and these accounts have passwords that expire (apparently every 30 days by default) and those passwords are automatically changed without user intervention. Given that this is known to cause issues when restoring snapshots of domain-joined virtual machines, is it possible to query the domain-joined computer or AD to determine when the machine account password is next scheduled to be changed?

    Hi, I need to ssh into a linux box. The server admin gave me a public and private ssh key. When I'm trying to login with the private key the login times out ("Operation timed out"). I haven't been able to find an argument to supply to modprobe, or a sysctl knob to tweak, but I know there must be ways to get more slots based on some Google sleuthing. (For the curious, this is just preliminary experimentation to see how many virtual disks I can hot-add to a running KVM guest.)

    There's a headless Ubuntu instance used as a host for our build server. I have some UI code that requires some graphical output. Installing a vnc4server and redirecting a DISPLAY to it worked like a charm. Not that my UI tests are running but test scripts can take screen shots. Problem is that I need to set the resolution that vnc4server uses to serve the graphical content. Does anybody know how to configure it on Ubuntu server?

I have a client from whom I have developed a PHP based Facebook project, who is hosting their site on IIS with ASP and no access to PHP, so they have created a sub domain to point to my server to host the site. I have an SSL on www.mydomain.com, but their sub domain does not have SSL (app.theirdomain.com). Would redirection from their side be possible to SSL on my side so that the FB app works?

  • Determine hostname of connected ethernet switch

    I've a bonding on two interfaces. I'd like to monitor wether they are connected to different switches (the switches have hostnames). ethX should be connected to switchX and ethY to switchY. Currently I'm checking this with following command: tcpdump -vv -s0 -i ethX ether host 01:00:0c:cc:cc:cc After a minute it prints out the hostname (and much more information) from the switch. Are there any other solutions to monitor this? Greeting

So here, we reboot every Virtual Machine running Windows everyday at a specified time, automatically. Coming from a Unix background, I find that rather surprising.   • Setting up a subdomain in IIS?

    I have an existing site that I would like to add a staging subdomain to. I created a new web site for it in IIS, added a host header for subdomain.mysite.com but when I try to get to the subdomain it is not found. Do I need to create an A Record in my DNS to point subdomain.mysite.com to the server's IP or will the existing entry for mysite.com work? If not, can anyone see what I am doing wrong here?

  • Importing VMware drive into VirtualBox drive

    I have VMware on my Mac and it crashed. I am unable to access the files used by the VMware. So I downloaded VirtualBox and when I try to add the .vmwarevm file to VirtualBox it says that its unable to read that type. I wasn't sure if there was a way i can get to these files as they are extremely important. I can not shutdown or open my virtual state in VMware whatsoever. Thoughts?

    I have a plugin that gets pushed to all clients. However, I have one that's specific to a particular module, hence I don't want it synced with all my clients. My generic plugin is stored in /etc/puppet/modules/custom/lib/facter but I have a plugin stored inside a module that seems to be pushed to all clients regardless if the host inherits the class or not.     I am trying to redirect /folder to / using .htaccess but all am I getting is the Apache HTTP Server Test Page. My root directory looks like this: / .htaccess -/folder -/folder2 -/folder3 My .htaccess looks like this: RewriteEngine On RewriteCond %{REQUEST_URI} !^/folder/ RewriteRule (.*) /folder/$1 What am I doing wrong? I checked my httpd.conf (I'm running Centos) and the mod_rewrite library is being loaded. As a side note, my server is not a www server, it's simply a virtual machine so it's hostname is centosvm.

  • Loading wordpress admin page prevents and blocks further requests

    I've installed a Wordpress site on a host (actually I moved it from localhost). The site loads and works perfectly, however if I log in with Admin, the admin page doesn't completely load and all further requests to the server are blocked for about 10 or 15 minutes. I can't even ping to the site. Where could this problem be from? Is it firewall related or...? Any help or idea is greatly appreciated.

    Is it possible to configure dhcpd (on a Linux box) to assign a Windows PC 2 separate IP configurations? Right now I've configured the two IP addresses manually and it does exactly what's needed, but I can't figure out how to achieve the same thing with DHCP. For example, is it possible to set up a virtual interface that piggy-backs onto the first interface and gets its own configuration? Alternatively, is it possible to run a script upon getting IP values from DHCP that would then be able to configure the secondary IP?
