• HP Pavilion dv6000 graphics issue

  A few days ago my laptop seized up on me while I was playing a game. When I restarted the computer, it sent me back to 640x480 resolution with 16 colors (clearly a graphical issue). In device manager, it shows an error, stating "Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)" regarding the video card. Upon removing and re-installing the drivers using both Windows Update and my own searching through nvidia's site, it's given me zero results. For kicks, I ran my antivirus (you never know!) and registry cleaner to see if anything would turn up. The antivirus found nothing, but CCleaner found 27 registry errors all dealing with my video card. What could be the cause of this, and what course of action would you recommend in this situation? • Centos livecd of current installation

  I'm trying to create a liveCD of my current Centos installation. i want it to be almost like a backup, so whenever I want to copy my current installation to another computer I would simply install from my custom liveCD. I know this is possible, and found some resources in the nets, but they all seem to only create a minimal version of CENTOS, and I'm wanting to have all the current functionalities available to me at present, including all of my development functionalities, Apache and samba settings, etc. I have done (on Debian though) it a few years ago, but can't remember how. could anyone please shed me a light on this? • How to become a Kernel/Systems/Device driver programmer?

  Hello all! I currently work in a professional capacity as a software engineer working with the Android OS. We work at integrating our platform as a native daemon among other facets of the project. I primarily work in Java developing the SDK and Android applications, but get to help with the platform in C/C++. Anywho, I have a great interest to work professionally developing low level for linux. I am not unhappy in my current position and will hang around as long as the company lets me (as a matter of fact I quite enjoy working there!), but I would like to work my way that direction. I've been working through Linux Kernel Development (Robert Love) and The Linux Programming Interface (Michael Kerrisk) (In addition to strengthening my C skills at every chance I get) and casually browsing Monster and similar sites. The problem I see is, there are no entry level positions. How does one break into this field? Anytime I see "Linux Systems Programmer" or "Linux Device Driver Programmer" they all require at the minimum 5-7 years of relevant experience. They want someone who knows the ropes, not a junior level programmer (I've been working for 7 months now...). So, I'm assuming, that some of you on stackoverflow work in a professional capacity doing just what I would like to do. How did you get there? What platforms did you use to work your way there? Am I going to have a more difficult time because I have my bachelors in CSC as opposed to a computer engineer (where they would experience a bit more embedded, asm, etc)?

  I tried logging into my computer after an "ungraceful" shutdown due to a power cut.. I got prompted with a message stating the user profile service failed the login. After reading a k/b on Microsoft I managed to re-login to the "corrupt" account by making registery edits.. But the next step (After having the ability to logon) is a major concern for me.. Would the guys at superuser suggest: 1) Carry on using said account 2) Re-install Windows to eliminate the possible chance of a reoccouring problem 3) Migrate all user data over to a new account and with that being said above. I had to issue the command line: net user administrator /active:yes to activate the hidden adminstrator account, would it be recommended/secure to disable the account or leave it active?

• Error Message: Primary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible

  So I recently switched towers and now, all of a sudden, I'm getting this error message as soon as I boot my system. The error message reads "Primary Slave Drive - ATAPI Incompatible". This has really been frustrating since there's NO Primary Slave Drive even installed in my computer!! I have one hard drive installed which is recognized as the Primary Master & a DVD Drive which is recognized as the Secondary Master. My old system ran flawlessly. I'm beginning to think maybe my motherboard is bugging out cuz I fail to understand how it can be telling me that a "nonexistent" drive is incompatible. Any suggestions??

• Backup to Synology NAS using rsync or NFS and hardlinks

  I want to backup data from a Windows (Vista) computer to a Synology NAS (210j). The NAS supports FTP, SMB, NFS and also allows a rsync daemon to be set up. I want to backup different folders to the NAS, but I'd prefer to use the hardlink method to save diskspace (like this script does). With this method, a new folder is created for every backup, but if the file already exists on the target, only a hardlink is created. The filesystem on the Synology device is ext3, so I probably can't use rsyncbackup, as it is made for NTFS. Is there another way to do this backup with hardlink support?

• how to program a special key on my laptop?

  ok so i have a set of touch screen buttons on the top of my laptop's keyboard, (one turns on power save mode, one disables/enables the mouse touch pad, one toggles the wifi adapter, and two turns the volume up/down) however theres another one that opened a file backup utility that came with my laptop. but since i bought my laptop , ive uninstalled that utility, rendering this button useless. So i was wondering if it was possible to reprogram that button to open another file or program on my computer? And if so what are the requirements and how would i go about doing it? • claws-mail suddenly does not recognize my .claws-mail folder

  Hi I turned my computer on today like any other day, and fired up my email-client claws-mail. However, instead of showing me my inbox, it just pops up the new-account wizard, as though my .claws-mail folder did not exist! I've double-checked that it's there, and that it (seems to) contain everything that it should. I tried running claws-mail from the terminal to see if it returned any useful messages about why it couldn't find my email account, but no dice... For reference, this is CM version 3.7.2 running on Gentoo kernel 2.6.31-gentoo-r6 (x86_64) Any clues as to how to get my beloved inbox/config back? Thanks!

  Hi I just installed outlook 2010, and saw this conversation feature. However my sent mails does not appear in the conversation. How do I make it appear there? PS: I'm not using exchange. Is there a way to do this without exchange? EDIT: There's something Weird happening. I'm testing this and it appears to work only sometimes. And When I Try this at the other company's computer that uses Exchange, but don't have exchange Cached mode enabled this doesn't work. And the option Show messages from other folders is not even there.

• dual boot Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04, black screen when loading Windows

  I am proficient with Windows and not so much with Linux. Here is my story: Original system came with Windows 7, got openSUSE installed on the second hard drive, and dual boot for this setup worked fine. Wanted to switch to Windows 7 and Ubuntu 11.04 dual boot so I did a Windows system recovery and it appeared to give me back a fresh Windows 7 install. I then go to install Ubuntu 11.04 and the installer informs me I have multiple operating systems already installed. I go to the advanced partitioning option and sure enough Windows 7 is on /sda while openSUSE is still on /sdb. From here I followed this guide (How to dual-boot Linux and Ubuntu with two hard drives) after I had deleted all the openSUSE partitions on /sdb through the Allocate Drive Space tab of the installer. I make the /boot, swap, /, and /home partitions and set the GRUB into the MBR of the second disk (/dev/sdb). Everything installs fine. I reboot, Windows loads automatically, install EasyBCD and add an entry for Ubuntu into the Windows Boot Manager while assigning the type as GRUB2. Reboot the system and it now shows dual booting options for both Windows and Ubuntu. Problem is: while I can use Ubuntu fine when I try to boot into Windows it just gives me a black screen and after a little while the fans start running crazy. If I restart the computer I will sometimes get the message that my system was put into hibernation mode because the temperature got too high (90C) which I presume is in accordance with the fans going crazy. I have linked the output from the Boot Info Script below, any suggestions on how to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated! • Unable to connect to Adobe Connect

  I am having troubles trying to connect my colleges Adobe Connect. I have done the test meeting connection and it will say "Unable to connect". I have tried connecting on 3 other computers and it works with flying colors. I am running Norton 360 on my computer and I also tried it on my other laptop thats also running Norton 360 and it works on that laptop. I also checked my hosts file and that is not the problem because I am able to connect to the server (on port 80) but not the Adobe Connect port (port 1935). The only thing in it is "127.0.0.1 localhost" Here are the details from the log that the test created: Player Version: WIN 11,3,300,271 App-Server returned: code:ok, servers=rtmp://connect.bowvalleycollege.ca:1935/_rtmp://localhost:8506/,rtmpt://connect.bowvalleycollege.ca:443/_rtmp://localhost:8506/ ERROR: FMS Server did not return correctly! Here is my specifications: Windows 7 SP1 x64 Norton 360 v6.3 (latest) It won't connect in Firefox v15, Chrome v19, or IE9 All of my computers are connected through the same router (D-Link DIR-625) Any ideas?

Port forwarding is configured as following: Enable true Name Apache Protocol TCP (also tried TCP and UPD) WAN Host Start IP Address empty WAN Host End IP Address empty WAN Connection stream WAN Start Port 8080 WAN End Port 8080 LAN Host IP Address 192.168.1.2 LAN Host Start Port 8080 LAN Host End Port 8080 Port 8080 is open for both TCP and UPD in Windows Brandmauer. Apache configuration: Listen 192.168.1.2:8080 Router Firmware: Hardware Version V1.0.01 Software Version V8.0.02T03_CFA Boot Loader Version V1.1.2 The provider is COMSTAR. I'm not sure but it's said they flash routers with modified firmware. I have also tried to set up Bitcomet port forwarding on port 13514 and failed.

  I currently have SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 both installed on the same machine. My job requires me to travel a lot and I like to travel light. Hence, I have only one computer with all the software installed in it. I can install Virtual Machines but as I was able to install SQL Server 2012 and SQL Server 2014 side by side, I just went ahead with that option. Now one day when I opened up my SQL Server 2014 and went to the properties of the my database, I realized that the dropdown box for Compatibility level is empty. I just can’t select anything there or see what is the current Compatibility level of the database. This was the first time for me so I was bit confused and I tried to search online. Upon searching online I realize that if I was not the first, there are very few questions on this subject on various forums as well as there is no convincing answer to this problem online. That means, I was pretty much first one to face this error. See the image of the situation I was facing. Now I decided to resolve this issue as soon as I can. I spent a few minutes here and there and realize my mistake. I had connected to SQL Server 2014 instance from SQL Server 2012 Management Studio. Hence, I was not able to see any compatibility related settings. Once I connected to SQL Server 2014 instance with SQL Server 2014 Management Studio – this issue was resolved.   BACKGROUND INFO: My Old Workstation Host: 32bit Ubuntu 9.04 running Sun Virtual Box 3.x hosting Windows-XP VM Guest for Windows Software app development (VS2008, etc) My New Workstation Host: 64bit Windows7 running VMWare Workstation 7 to host 32bit Ubuntu 9.10 for linux project work. NEEDS: I need to get my original Sun-VBox Windows-XP Guest running on my new Windows7 Workstation either imported into VMWare or running on the Windows version of Sun-Virtual box (I have the VM-Guest Backed up and copied to the new computer data drive. PROBLEM: I don't need to run VM's from Both Virtual-Machine Software packages at the same time... but I do need to run some older Virtual-Machines from Sun-Virtualbox on the same 64bit Windows7 host until I can migrate those VM's to VMWare. Before switching from Linux HOST to Windows HOST, I ensured to export the VirtualBox VM to an OVF "appliance" with intentions of importing into VMWare Workstation 7.. but VMWare gives me an error stating it can't import it QUESTION: Will installing Sun Virtual Box bash or interfere with my VMWare installtion?

• External Hard-Drive Randomly Ejects; Stays On

  My 250GB I/O Magic USB external hard-drive randomly disconnects / ejects from the computer after between 2-30 minutes of use. When this happens, the blinking activity light on the front of the hdd turns off; however, the disks can still be heard spinning. Unplugging & replugging in the USB does not reconnect the device and the activity light remains unlit. The only way to continue using it is to flip off then on the power switch of the hdd. The hard-drive was formatted with MBR partition table and 2 NTFS volumes. I recently tried switching to GUID with two Mac OS Extended (Journaled), but the problem remains. This error occurs with my new Macbook Pro with Snow Leopard as well as with my DELL E520 with Windows 7 Ultimate.

• Weird files in User folder

  In my user folder (C:/Users/myAccount/) theres a set of interesting hidden files that I've never seen before (right now it's a fresh install of Windows 7 Ultimate). These are: NTUSER.DAT, ntuser.dat.LOG1, ntuser.dat.LOG2, and NTUSER.DAT(whole chain of numbers and letters).TM.bif, NTUSER.DAT(whole chain of numbers and letters).TMContaineretcetc.regtrans-ms, and another similar one. When I try to delete them, it says the system is using them. I've never seen these files before. Are they ok to delete? Or should I leave them in my home folder? I always keep "Show hidden files" as well as "Show System files" checked, since I prefer being able to see all the files on my computer. If I shouldn't delete them, is there at least a way to tidy them up a bit? Thanks.

• Couldn't pass the signin screen

  I have an issue here with my computer using ubuntu 10.10 on a 64 bits machine. When I start it, I have the login screen, I enter my credentials but instead of starting the session it reloads the login screen again. I checked the disc using fsck and it seems clean. How should I proceed to diagnose and repair this issue? Thanks! • Apache doesn't start on Windows XP Professional SP3

  I have XAMPP installed on my PC, and it works fine. Every service starts fine except Apache. I went to Services in Administrative Tools, and tried to start it from there, without success. I tried XAMPP Shell to run Apache by typing: xampp_cli start apache. That didn't work, either. I also tried reinstallling XAMPP, turning my computer off/on, restoring the registry from when I first installed XAMPP when Apache worked but still, nothing changed. Any ideas as to what could be causing this problem?

• Problem closing MDI child window in Terminal Services/Remote Desktop Connection 7.0

  I have one user whose computer just got updated to the 7.0 Remote Desktop Connection. Concurrently, she has started having a problem closing the MDI child windows in an old FoxPro application running on the remote server. We have two different servers, both 2003, running the same application, one locally and one at a remote office. Only the remote office server is giving trouble. It works fine for me, even when logging into her TS account. No other users have complained. The other day the same user experienced an error message (path not found for a path showing a localization placeholder) starting the RDC, fixed by reboot. I suspect she may have had RDC running during the 7.0 upgrade.

  Hello! At the moment, I try to install Arduino on my Ubuntu 10.04 (32 Bit) computer. I downloaded the latest release at http://arduino.cc/en/Main/Software, cd'ed to the directory and unziped the package. • How to view all connections through Router

  So what I need to know is how find out who has been visiting what websites when through the router. It is similar to being able to History on browsers, but people can clear their history, or use Incognito mode. However, surely any data would be sent through the router so even if the person did clear their history or use incognito mode, you would be able to see what they had sent through the router, and what the internet had sent back. Is there any way to view all the connections that the router manages, and store all the data that it sends and receives and put them into, for example, a log file so I could view which computer had viewed what website at what time?

• Linksys Router/Tomato Firmware DNS issues

  I've got a WRT54GS that I've loaded the current version of Tomato onto. I entered static DHCP addresses in for the devices on my network, released and renewed the address on my desktop and tried to ping another computer. All I got was The request could not find host blah. Please check the name and try again. Now, I verified that my desktop and the target machine I'm trying to ping have both received their proper static DHCP lease and that their DNS server is the IP address of my router. What am I missing?

• Evolution email forgets all settings after reboot

  My Evolution email client keeps forgetting all settings after a reboot or even a logout/login! Please help! I have recently installed Ubuntu 12.04 on a new laptop. To move my Evolution settings and email over to the new machine, I selected "backup", which creates a single tar.gz archive of all Evolution settings and mail. I copied the file to the new computer, started Evolution which presented me with the startup assistant. I selected 'restore from backup', pointed at the tar.gz file and all was beautifully restored. All seemed to work just fine. However, after a reboot I noticed that Evolution seems to have forgotten all settings: I get the startup assistant again when I start Evolution. I checked that the .conf/evolution and .local/share/evolution directories were still present, yet, none of that seemed to matter, it wanted me to restore from a backup again. The version of Ubuntu (12.04) and Evolution (3.2.3) are the same on the old and new laptop. Just stopping and restarting Evolution does not cause this problem. Even if I manually kill all Evolution related processes, the settings will be remembered and it can start up no problem. The problem only happens on logout/login or reboot. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thank you very much!
