  • Building big, immutable objects without using constructors having long parameter lists

    Hi StackOverflow! I have some big (more than 3 fields) Objects which can and should be immutable. Every time I run into that case i tend to create constructor abominations with long parameter lists. It doesn't feel right, is hard to use and readability suffers. It is even worse if the fields are some sort of collection type like lists. A simple addSibling(S s) would ease the object creation so much but renders the object mutable. What do you guys use in such cases? I'm on Scala and Java, but i think the problem is language agnostic as long as the language is object oriented. Solutions I can think of: "Constructor abominations with long parameter lists" The Builder Pattern Thanks for your input!

  • jquery - radio button not checked on page load, but checked on same function call later

    Hi, I'm having a strange problem with jquery. When my page loads, I dynamically create some simple radio buttons in a special i've created. However, the default radio button is not checked. It is checked however when the change() event is triggered later, but is never checked the first time. Can someone help? I am certain that the change() event is triggered on the page load, because the rest of the HTML is added dynamically and I can see it.     Over the last few years F# has evolved into one of Microsoft's fully supported languages employing many ideas incubated in OCaml, ML and Haskell. Over the last several years C# has extended it's general purpose features by introducing more and more functional language features: LINQ (list comprehension), Lamdas, Closures, Anonymous Delegates and more... Given C#'s adoption of these functional features and F#'s taxonomy as an impure functional language (it allows YOU to access framework libraries or change shared state when a function is called if you want to) there is a strong similarity between the two languages although each has it's own polar opposite primary emphasis. I'm interested in any successful models employing these two languages in your production polyglot programs and also the areas within production software (web apps, client apps, server apps) you have written in F# in the past year or so that you would previously have written in C#.   • GEDIT problem on Windows

    Every once in a while (5 minutes or so), gedit interrupts my typing with a little "This file has changed on disk" message and asks me if I'd like to reload it. I know that the file isn't being changed. It's located on a local disk only I am editing it if I click "reload" on the dialog, there is no visible change in the file This doesn't happen in other text editors like Emacs or EditPlus. Does anyone know what the problem is and/or how to fix it?

    What are some examples of code generators you have used? I think it's a cool idea, but I have trouble thinking of things they can do besides make a class based on an object's attributes/database schema (as described in The Pragmatic Programmer). What language did you write them in and what language did they output? Edit: Thanks for the responses so far. What I am really looking for is examples of code generators made from scratch for some certain purpose. I mentioned it in the title, but didn't make it very clear in my question. How did you go about making a code generator on your own and what specificly did it achieve?

  • WPF Localization Using LocBaml: Handling Special Symbols

    Hello, I’m dealing with localization of a WPF application (Visual Studio 2010 under Windows 7). I’ve just accomplished the whole process of localization using LocBaml tool, as explained in WPF Globalization and Localization Overview and in related posts. The target language is Italian (it-IT culture). When I run my application in Italian, I have a problem with interpretation of the special symbols of © and ™: they both appear there as a white question sign upon a black diamond-shaped background. The symbols © and ™ appear identically in both English and Italian CSV-files. I tried also the special letters (such as È, à etc.) that are present in Italian but absent in English, and they also are interpreted as the above diamond-shaped question. In Region and Language, I changed the system locale to Italian[Italy], restarted the PC and ran the application again – this helped me in the past to cope with a similar problem in localization of C++ applications under Windows XP, but now it didn’t help, either. Has somebody any idea what is the catch here?

But I'm trying to learn what the difference is between writing a function like this is in plpgsql: CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION foo() RETURNS TRIGGER AS $$ .... $$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; vs CREATE OR REPLACE FUNCTION foo() RETURNS TRIGGER AS $foo$ .... $foo$ LANGUAGE plpgsql; is there a difference when using $$ vs $foo$? why would someone choose one over another? perhaps I've just missed some documentation explaining the difference. If someone could enlighten me, I'd really appreciate it.

For example: listing pages fetching the content of other pages doing a site search and displaying its output dynamically show or hide parts of the page depending on login status Of course, I am not expecting a solution that provides the same possibilities like a Ruby, Python or PHP web framework. Rather I am looking for support of the "basics" that are common for web sites.   • LINQ Datacontext Disposal Issues

    I am getting a Cannot access object: DataContext after it's been disposed in the below DAL method. I thought that I would be okay calling dispose there. result is an IEnumurable and I thought it was IQueryable that caused these kinds of problems. What am I doing wrong? How SHOULD I be disposing of my DataContext. Is there something better to be returning then a DataTable? This is a Desktop app that points at SQL 2005.   • Qt QFileDialog - native dialogs only with static functions?

    I'm trying to simply save a file. However, I need a filename entered without a suffix to automatically get a default suffix (which setDefaultSuffix() does). I'd rather not completely lose the native save dialog just for this. exec() is not overloaded from QDialog, so it totally bypasses the native hook (ignoring the DontUseNativeDialog option even if it's false). If I disable the file overwrite warning and append the default suffix myself after the function returns, then I'd be re-opening the dialog if the user did not want to overwrite... and that's just ugly. Is there some signal I can catch and quickly inject the default suffix if it's not there? I'm guessing not, since it's a native dialog. Is there something I'm doing wrong with the filter? I only have one filter choice. It should use that extension. This seems pretty lame. Launching the save dialog and simply typing "test" should never result in an extensionless file. "test.", yes. "test" no way. That'll really confuse the users when they hit Load and can't see the file they just saved. I guess the cross-platform part of Qt is giving me lowest common denominator file dialog functionality?

  • Hadoop or Hadoop Streaming for MapReduce on AWS

    I'm about to start a mapreduce project which will run on AWS and I am presented with a choice, to either use Java or C++. I understand that writing the project in Java would make more functionality available to me, however C++ could pull it off too, through Hadoop Streaming. Mind you, I have little background in either language. A similar project has been done in C++ and the code is available to me. So my question: is this extra functionality available through AWS or is it only relevant if you have more control over the cloud? Is there anything else I should bear in mind in order to make a decision, like availability of plugins for hadoop that work better with one language or the other? Thanks in advance

  • Safari extension - Too many injected scripts responding to message

    Hi, I am trying to code a safari extension similar to Bubble Translate for Chrome. when you click a button on the toolbar, it automatically translates the text currently selected to the language of your choice using the Google language API. I use the following injected script to get the highlighted text and display the result (as an alert for the time being): http://pastebin.com/bYVuQAmp I use the following global script to call the injected script if neccessary: hxxp://pastebin.com/VHaAKM5a The problem I have is the following: The script does not just get injected into the main page but also into ads and similar stuff that is embedded into the page. Due to that, the selected text gets translated multiple times because all the embedded scripts in one page respond to the message. How can I make sure that the script is injected only into the right page or only the right page responds? Thank you, Philipp

  • iPhone OpenGL Splash Screen? How?

    My app is based pretty much on the EAGLView in the SDK. It doesn't incorporate a ViewController. Rather it simply inits GL and starts painting immediately.. Currently, my app will load a very small PNG and displays it as quickly as possible. On a 3GS this is rather instant, but on a 3G it can take about 2 seconds. In the latter case of the 3G, the user is looking at a black screen for that time. Is this behavior allowed by Apple? Is there any way to alter this SDK example so that it makes use of 'default.png'? It doesn't seem so straight forward to me. I want my user to see an image as quickly as possible, and I also don't want to be rejected for such a little quirk like this as well. In the guidelines, they encourage you to use default.png for standard applications to show a sort of mockup of the interface while it actually loads. I want to initialize OpenGL, and ALSO display this. This default.png is loaded before the app screen launches. This is EXACLTY what I want to make use of. Any help is appreciated. Thanks!

    In my web application VS 2008 solution, I have the AjaxControlToolkit.dll in my bin directory and a whole set of language directories for it (ar, cs, de,es, fr, he, etc...) I don't remember how the language directories got in there. If I am using other languages via the ACT, do I need these directories? If not, then I don't? When I do a rebuild solution, the dll (AjaxControlToolkit.resources.dll) in these directories disappear. If I need them, what do I need to do to keep them from being deleted during a rebuild?
