• How can I enforce Eclipse to use Sun Java?

  Hi Before installing Eclipse I had Open JDK on default. Now I changed it to Sun Java. I did as Eclipse Helios was running really slow, unfortunately it is still... Do you have any ideas how to enforce it to use Java Sun? I could reinstal it however I have already Android SDK installed so I would have to do all the process again, after all thats not the correct way of solving problem I think. I'm using Ubuntu 10.10. java -version java version "1.6.0_22" Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build1.6.0_22-b04) Java HotSpot(TM) 64-Bit Server VM (build 17.1-b03, mixed mode) Would be grateful for any help. • Anchors requiring multiple clicks to fire

  'This is bizarre bug. I have CSS3 anchors/buttons, which I've continued to strip properties out of, that sometimes require multiple clicks to fire. I've never seen anything like it. http://votizen.com Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn't. So it's very tough to pin down. • [Android] How do I load URL that requires login into variable?

  I am trying to port my usage meter from a JavaScript Gadget (win) / Widget (OSX) to Android. Total newbie when comes to JAVA + Eclipse + Android 2.1 SDK. Essentially what I want to do is load a page, pass through a username and password and load the resulting page into a array that I can then run some regular expressions through.   Hi all, I am making a iphone program, I wish that: it can sense and display the current signals of wifi, with strength, - as I checked, this cannot be done by official SDK, but there were some private library that can handle. 2. i wish it can always automatically join the best wifi with the most highest strength ( assume that all wifi APs have no password, and all are not remembered into the used-list inside iphone), which is something like "seamless handover"... • Drawing rubber band line during user drag

  In my iPhone app, I would like the user to be able to "connect" two of my views by: 1) starting a drag in View A 2) as they drag towards View B, a straight line with one end in View A and the other end under at the current drag point, animates in a rubber-band fashion 3) when/if they release in View B, the line is then shown between the two views I've seen examples of dragging and dropping views, and other examples of animations, but I haven't seen one that is a simple example of this kind of user-directed animation. Any pointers towards examples or the specific docs I should be looking at would be appreciated. If this turns out to be trivial - my apologies. Although I've done quite a bit of development, I'm just getting started in the iPhone SDK and Core Graphics.

  Hello, I'm wondering how is implemented load balancing in realy big applications like google or facebook. I know that in normal scenario there may be machine dedicated to this task, but I would like to know how is it resolved in realy big aplication with hundreds of thousans people accessing it in any given time. I am just wondering how exactly when one types google.com will that request find its way to concrete computer (are there multiple load balancers? and how is it set up and implemented that user's request will find the way to concrete balancer out of many others). • How to display Preferences in a View

  I'm building some sort of wizard to create user accounts in Sync and Manage account. I use a ViewFlipper my activity has to be an AccountAuthenticatorActivity. That said it also means I can't inherit PreferenceActivity. So I looked up in the code of PreferenceActivity and I believe it should be possible to have a PreferenceView that inherit from ListView. The Activity part of PreferenceActivity isn't really needed as far as I know. Though the PreferenceManager is what really blocks me. private PreferenceManager onCreatePreferenceManager() { PreferenceManager preferenceManager = new PreferenceManager(this, FIRST_REQUEST_CODE); preferenceManager.setOnPreferenceTreeClickListener(this); return preferenceManager; } This function imply that we can instatiate PreferenceManager using the operator new. Apparently, the sdk hide the constructor of the PreferenceManager. I'm kind of confused. Is there a way to inflate my preferences and display them without PreferenceActivity?

• Global search box extension - how to make browser to start when suggestion picked.

  Hi, I'm implementing global search box extension (sth like SearchableDictionary sample in android sdk). Everything works fine - suggestions are displayed properly. Problem is that I want browser to start when user picks a suggestion. (each suggestion is a link) Columns of my cursor contain SearchManager.SUGGEST_COLUMN_INTENT_DATA, and I use that to pass http link. My searchable xml contains default intent action set to: android:searchSuggestIntentAction="android.intent.action.VIEW". But when user hits the suggestion, my application is started instead of browser. What am I missing? Regards!

• How can I replicate the functionality of the Flash Builder's release tool in ant?

  I want to build an ant script that does exactly the same compilation actions on a Flash Builder 4 (Gumbo) project as the Project->Export Release Build... menu item does. My ant-fu is reasonably strong, that's not the issue, but rather I'm not sure exactly what that entry is doing. Some details: I'll be using the 3.x SDK (say, 3.2 for the sake of specificity) to build this. I'll be building on a Mac, and I can happily use ant, make, or some weird shell script stuff if that's the way you roll. Any useful optimizations you can suggest will be welcome. The project contains a few assets, MXML and actionscript source, and a couple of .swcs that are built into the project (not RSL'd) Can someone provide an ant build.xml or makefle that they use to build a release .swf file from a similar Flex project?

• Eclipse + AppEngine =? autocomplete

  I was doing some beginner AppEngine dev on a Windows box and installed Eclipse for that. I liked the autocompletion I got with the objects and functions. I moved my dev environment over to my Macbook, and installed Eclipse Ganymede. I installed the AppEngine SDK and Eclipse plug in. However, when I am typing out code now, the autocomplete isn't functioning. Did I miss a step? UPDATE Just to add to this: the line: import cgi appears to give me what I need. When I type "cgi." I get all of the auto complete. However, the lines: from google.appengine.api import users from google.appengine.ext import webapp from google.appengine.ext.webapp.util import run_wsgi_app from google.appengine.ext import db don't give me any auto complete. If I type "users." there is no auto complete.

  Hi guys, i'm studying the fastcgi developement kit because i'm writing a new scripting language and i'd like to write a fastcgi version of the interpreter to run scripts as webpages. I'm using this example from the sdk, located at /srv/http/bin/echocpp So, in my httpd.conf file, i have the following lines : FastCgiServer /srv/http/bin/echocpp -idle-timeout 120 -processes 4 ScriptAlias / /srv/http/bin/echocpp/ ... ... AddHandler fastcgi-script hy Where 'hy' is the extensions of my scripts. Then, when i try browse, for instance http://localhost/~evilsocket/prime.hy I see all the environment variables as expected from the echo-cpp.cpp programm, except for the SCRIPT_NAME that is empty. Is there something i'm missing out of this? How am i supposed to obtain the full path of the script to run it inside my fastcgi version of the interpreter? Thanks

  The VSTO bit I understand. Visual Studio has the project templates to get you started with creating nice .NET based add-ins. But where is VSTA? I installed the SDK but it seems to be gears towards adding extensibility to your own applications. I had thought that VSTA was like the new VBA for Office 2007. Infopath 2007 seems to be VSTA enabled but I cannot seem to find where Excel 2007 is also VSTA enabled. Am I missing something?

  This is a question that is based on choosing performance over design practices. If I have a method that will be executed many times a second; public static IQueryable<IPerson> InRadius(this IQueryable<IPerson> query, Coordinate center, double radius) { return (from u in query where CallHeavyMathFormula(u, center, radius) select u); } This extension method for IQueryable generates a SQL that does some heavy maths calculation (Cosine, Sine, etc). This would mean the application sends 1-2KB of sql to the server per call. I've heard of placing all application logic, in your application. I also would like to change to a database such as azure or one of those scalable databases in the future. How do I handle something like this? Should I leave it as it is now or write stored procedures? How do applications like twitter or facebook do it?

• HttpsURLConnection failing intermittently to the same URL

  I think I'm experiencing the same as http://groups.google.com/group/android-developers/msg/9d37d64aad0ee357 This is Android 1.5 SDK. I happen to call several times below code(which is in a method) with the same url and it fails intermittently. When it fails, there is no exception, the stream is empty so the readConnection fails, and getResponseCode returns -1. Global caching is disabled, setDefaultUseCaches(false); I suppose there must be some kind of url connection object pool somewhere. Any idea on how can I workaround this? • Linkedin: Registering Application for both Web and Mobile

  My project deals with both Web app and Mobile app. So before we can use Linkedin API's into our project we need to register our app with Linkedin according to this Quick Start. But for my situation where i use Linkedin API's for both web and mobile, Do i need to register two application with Linkedin. Or is there any other way to register a single application and use the same for both web and mobile? In the registration page i don't see any distinction for Web and Mobile, unlike facebook where a single application registered can be used for both web and mobile app. If anyone could point me to appropriate docs or pointers, it would be really helpful. • How to suppress javascript errors for sites I'm not developing?

  I like to keep javascript debugging enabled in my browser so when I'm developing my own code I can instantly see when I've made an error. Of course this means I see errors on apple.com, microsoft.com, stackoverflow.com, cnn.com, facebook.com. Its quite fun sometimes to see just how much awful code there is out there being run by major sites but sometimes it gets really annoyed. I've wondered for YEARS how to change this but never really got around to it. Its particularly annoying today and I'd really like to know of any solutions. The only solution I have is : use a different browser for everyday browsing. I'm hopin theres some quick and easy plugin someone can direct me to where I can toggle it on and off based upon the domain i'm on. Edit: I generally use IE7 for everyday browsing

• Creating an n tiered application

  I am researching architecture for a project that will be started next year. It is mainly a c# web app, but there will be a service layer so that it can talk to our facebook/iphone app. There are a few long running processes, which means that I will be creating a windows process that can handle those. I’m thinking of putting the entire app in the windows service instead of just the long running processes. Asp - wcf - bll Vs Asp - bll I know this will be more scalable. But it is probably overkill as everything will be running on the same box, even the database. This could change down the road if the server can’t handle the traffic like marketing says it will. I don’t have access to production hardware, just my crappy testing box and my local machine. Has anyone decided to go down this route? But mostly, what is the best way to test both methods to get some metrics?

So I decided to use Spring Security OAuth plugin. I have configured the plugin. Now I want user can access both via normal local account and also the OAuth authentication.   Hi, I want to access the messages stored in inbox through my android project. I have tried the method of forming URI for sms (content://sms/ inbox) and then quering it for various parametres. But I cannot find any documentation for reading inbox sms in the standard Android Developr Docs. It was mentioned at various websites that this content has been removed from the standard sdk. The application may not support higher version of android. So, how can I create an apllication to read sms from inbox that is reliable in furture version of android. Please help !!
