• Unable to set TestContext property

  I have a visual studio 2008 Unit test and I'm getting the following runtime error: Unable to set TestContext property for the class JMPS.PlannerSuite.DataServices.MyUnitTest. Error: System.ArgumentException: Object of type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.TestTypes.Unit.UnitTestAdapterContext' cannot be converted to type 'Microsoft.VisualStudio.TestTools.UnitTesting.TestContext' I have read that VS 2008 does not properly update the references to the UnitTestFramework when converting 2005 projects. My unit test was created in 2008 but it inherits from a base class built in VS 2005. Is this where my problem is coming from? Does my base class have to be rebuilt in 2008? I would rather not do this as it will affect other projects. In other derived unit tests built in 2005, all that we needed to do was comment out the TestContext property in the derived unit test. I have tried this in the VS 2008 unit test with no luck. I have also tried to "new" the TestContext property which gives me a different runtime error. Any ideas?

• Can I read an Outlook (2003/2007) PST file in C#?

  Is it possible to read a .PST file using C#? I would like to do this as a standalone application, not as an Outlook addin (if that is possible). If have seen other SO questions similar to this mention MailNavigator but I am looking to do this programmatically in C#. I have looked at the Microsoft.Office.Interop.Outlook namespace but that appears to be just for Outlook addins. LibPST appears to be able to read PST files, but this is in C (sorry Joel, I didn't learn C before graduating). Any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks! EDIT: Thank you all for the responses! • Silverlight MouseLeftButtonDown event not firing

  For the life of me, I can not get this to work. I can get MouseEnter, MouseLeave, and Click events to fire, but not MouseLeftButtonDown or MouseLeftButtonUp. • Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community

  There we go! I finally managed to push myself forward and pick up an old, actually too old, idea since I ever arrived here in Mauritius more than six years ago. I'm talking about a community for all kind of ICT connected people. In the past (back in Germany), I used to be involved in various community activities. For example, I was part of the Microsoft Community Leader/Influencer Program (CLIP) in Germany due to an FAQ on Visual FoxPro, actually Active FoxPro Pages (AFP) to be more precise. Then in 2003/2004 I addressed the responsible person of the dFPUG user group in Speyer in order to assist him in organising monthly user group meetings. Well, he handed over management completely, and attended our meetings regularly. Why did it take you so long? Well, I don't want to bother you with the details but short version is that I was too busy on either job (building up new companies) or private life (got married and we have two lovely children, eh 'monsters') or even both. But now is the time where I was starting to look for new fields given the fact that I gained some spare time. My businesses are up and running, the kids are in school, and I am finally in a position where I can commit myself again to community activities. And I love to do that! Why a new user group? Good question... And 'easy' to answer. Since back in 2007 I did my usual research, eh Google searches, to see whether there existing user groups in Mauritius and in which field of interest. And yes, there are! If I recall this correctly, then there are communities for PHP, Drupal, Python (just recently), Oracle, and Linux (which used to be even two). But... either they do not exist anymore, they are dormant, or there is only a low heart-beat, frankly speaking. And yes, I went to meetings of the Linux User Group Meta (Mauritius) back in 2010/2011 and just recently. I really like the setup and the way the LUGM is organised. It's just that I have a slightly different point of view on how a user group or community should organise itself and how to approach future members. Don't get me wrong, I'm not criticizing others doing a very good job, I'm only saying that I'd like to do it differently. The last meeting of the LUGM was awesome; read my feedback about it. Ok, so what's up with 'Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community' or short: MSCC? As I've already written in my article on 'Communities - The importance of exchange and discussion' I think it is essential in a world of IT to stay 'connected' with a good number of other people in the same field. There is so much dynamic and every day's news that it is almost impossible to keep on track with all of them. The MSCC is going to provide a common platform to exchange experience and share knowledge between each other. You might be a newbie and want to know what to expect working as a software developer, or as a database administrator, or maybe as an IT systems administrator, or you're an experienced geek that loves to share your ideas or solutions that you implemented to solve a specific problem, or you're the business (or HR) guy that is looking for 'fresh' blood to enforce your existing team. Or... you're just interested and you'd like to communicate with like-minded people. Meetup of 26.06.2013 @ L'arabica: Of course there are laptops around. Free WiFi, power outlet, coffee, code and Linux in one go. The MSCC is technology-agnostic and spans an umbrella over any kind of technology. Simply because you can't ignore other technologies anymore in a connected IT world as we have. A front-end developer for iOS applications should have the chance to connect with a Python back-end coder and eventually with a DBA for MySQL or PostgreSQL and exchange their experience. Furthermore, I'm a huge fan of cross-platform development, and it is very pleasant to have pure Web developers - with all that HTML5, CSS3, JavaScript and JS libraries stuff - and passionate C# or Java coders at the same table. This diversity of knowledge can assist and boost your personal situation. And last but not least, there are projects and open positions 'flying' around... People might like to hear others opinion about an employer or get new impulses on how to tackle down an issue at their workspace, etc. This is about community. And that's how I see the MSCC in general - free of any limitations be it by programming language or technology. Having the chance to exchange experience and to discuss certain aspects of technology saves you time and money, and it's a pleasure to enjoy. Compared to dusty books and remote online resources. It's human! Organising meetups (meetings, get-together, gatherings - you name it!) As of writing this article, the MSCC is currently meeting every Wednesday for the weekly 'Code & Coffee' session at various locations (suggestions are welcome!) in Mauritius. This might change in the future eventually but especially at the beginning I think it is very important to create awareness in the Mauritian IT world. Yes, we are here! Come and join us! ;-) The MSCC's main online presence is located at Meetup.com because it allows me to handle the organisation of events and meeting appointments very easily, and any member can have a look who else is involved so that an exchange of contacts is given at any time. In combination with the other entities (G+ Communities, FB Pages or in Groups) I advertise and manage all future activities here: Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community This is a community for those who care and are proud of what they do. For those developers, regardless how experienced they are, who want to improve and master their craft. This is a community for those who believe that being average is just not good enough. I know, there are not many 'craftsmen' yet but it's a start... Let's see how it looks like by the end of the year. There are free smartphone apps for Android and iOS from Meetup.com that allow you to keep track of meetings and to stay informed on latest updates. And last but not least, there is a Trello workspace to collect and share ideas and provide downloads of slides, etc. Trello is also available as free smartphone app. Sharing is caring! Your future looks bright Running and participating in a user group or any kind of community usually provides quite a number of advantages for anyone. On the one side it is very joyful for me to organise appointments and get in touch with people that might be interested to present a little demo of their projects or their recent problems they had to tackle down, and on the other side there are lots of companies that have various support programs or sponsorships especially tailored for user groups. At the moment, I already have a couple of gimmicks that I would like to hand out in small contests or raffles during one of the upcoming meetings, and as said, companies provide all kind of goodies, books free of charge, or sometimes even licenses for communities. Meeting other software developers or IT guys also opens up your point of view on the local market and there might be interesting projects or job offers available, too. A community like the Mauritius Software Craftsmanship Community is great for freelancers, self-employed, students and of course employees. • Mixing Silverlight-Specific System.Xml.Linq dll with Non-Silverlight System.Xml.Linq dll

  I have a Logic layer that references Silverlight's System.Xml.Linq dll and a GUI that is in WPF (hence using the non-Silverlight System.Xml.Linq dll). When I attempt to pass an XElement from GUI project to a method in the Logic project, I am getting (basically) "XElement is not of type XElement" errors. To complicate matter, I am unable to edit the Logic layer project. The Non-Silverlight DLL is at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Reference Assemblies\Microsoft\Framework\v3.5\System.Xml.Linq.dll THe Silverlight DLL is at: C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft SDKs\Silverlight\v3.0\Libraries\Client\System.Xml.Linq.dll I am new to C# but I'm fairly sure my issue is that I am referencing different DLL's to access the System.Xml.Linq namespace. I attempted to replace my non-Silverlight System.Xml.Linq.dll with the Silverlight's System.Xml.Linq.dll, but received assembly errors. Is there any way to resolve this short of scrapping my WPF GUI project and creating a Silverlight project?

• Unable to attach "AdventureWorks2008" Sample Database to a named Instance in SQL Server 2008

  First of all "Northwind" and "AdventureWorksDW2008" databases attached without problem, but "AdventureWorks2008" fails with the following error. // Msg 5120, Level 16, State 105, Line 1 Unable to open the physical file "C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL10.MSSQLSERVER\MSSQL\DATA\Documents". • WPF ShowDialog returns immediately

  Sometimes when I call ShowDialog on an OpenFileDialog Window in WPF, the dialog closes immediately with a return value of false. I'm calling ShowDialog in response to a button click event. • Building an HTML5 App with ASP.NET

  I’m teaching several JavaScript and ASP.NET workshops over the next couple of months (thanks everyone!) and I thought it would be useful for my students to have a really easy to use JavaScript reference. I wanted a simple interactive JavaScript reference and I could not find one so I decided to put together one of my own. I decided to use the latest features of JavaScript, HTML5 and jQuery such as local storage, offline manifests, and jQuery templates. What could be more appropriate than building a JavaScript Reference with JavaScript? You can try out the application by visiting: http://Superexpert.com/JavaScriptReference Because the app takes advantage of several advanced features of HTML5, it won’t work with Internet Explorer 6 (but really, you should stop using that browser). I have tested it with IE 8, Chrome 8, Firefox 3.6, and Safari 5. You can download the source for the JavaScript Reference application at the end of this article. Superexpert JavaScript Reference Let me provide you with a brief walkthrough of the app. When you first open the application, you see the following lookup screen: As you type the name of something from the JavaScript language, matching results are displayed: You can click the details link for any entry to view details for an entry in a modal dialog: Alternatively, you can click on any of the tabs -- Objects, Functions, Properties, Statements, Operators, Comments, or Directives -- to filter results by type of syntax. For example, you might want to see a list of all JavaScript built-in objects: You can login to the application to make modification to the application: After you login, you can add, update, or delete entries in the reference database: HTML5 Local Storage The application takes advantage of HTML5 local storage to store all of the reference entries on the local browser. IE 8, Chrome 8, Firefox 3.6, and Safari 5 all support local storage. When you open the application for the first time, all of the reference entries are transferred to the browser. The data is stored persistently. Even if you shutdown your computer and return to the application many days later, the data does not need to be transferred again. Whenever you open the application, the app checks with the server to see if any of the entries have been updated on the server. If there have been updates, then only the updates are transferred to the browser and the updates are merged with the existing entries in local storage. After the reference database has been transferred to your browser once, only changes are transferred in the future. You get two benefits from using local storage. First, the application loads very fast and works very fast after the data has been loaded once. The application does not query the server whenever you filter or view entries. All of the data is persisted in the browser. Second, you can browse the JavaScript reference even when you are not connected to the Internet (when you are on the proverbial airplane). The JavaScript Reference works as an offline application for browsers that support offline applications (unfortunately, not IE). When using Google Chrome, you can easily view the contents of local storage by selecting Tools, Developer Tools (CTRL-SHIFT I) and selecting Storage, Local Storage: The JavaScript Reference app stores two items in local storage: entriesLastUpdated and entries. HTML5 Offline App For browsers that support HTML5 offline applications – Chrome 8 and Firefox 3.6 but not Internet Explorer – you do not need to be connected to the Internet to use the JavaScript Reference. The JavaScript Reference can execute entirely on your machine just like any other desktop application. When you first open the application with Firefox, you are presented with the following warning: Notice the notification bar that asks whether you want to accept offline content. If you click the Allow button then all of the files (generated ASPX, images, CSS, JavaScript) needed for the JavaScript Reference will be stored on your local computer. Automatic Script Minification and Combination All of the custom JavaScript files are combined and minified automatically whenever the application is built with Visual Studio. All of the custom scripts are contained in a folder named App_Scripts: When you perform a build, the combine.js and combine.debug.js files are generated. The Combine.config file contains the list of files that should be combined (importantly, it specifies the order in which the files should be combined). Here’s the contents of the Combine.config file:   <?xml version="1.0"?> <combine> <scripts> <file path="compat.js" /> <file path="storage.js" /> <file path="serverData.js" /> <file path="entriesHelper.js" /> <file path="authentication.js" /> <file path="default.js" /> </scripts> </combine>   jQuery and jQuery UI The JavaScript Reference application takes heavy advantage of jQuery and jQuery UI. In particular, the application uses jQuery templates to format and display the reference entries. Each of the separate templates is stored in a separate ASP.NET user control in a folder named Templates: The contents of the user controls (and therefore the templates) are combined in the default.aspx page: <!-- Templates --> <user:EntryTemplate runat="server" /> <user:EntryDetailsTemplate runat="server" /> <user:BrowsersTemplate runat="server" /> <user:EditEntryTemplate runat="server" /> <user:EntryDetailsCloudTemplate runat="server" /> When the default.aspx page is requested, all of the templates are retrieved in a single page. WCF Data Services The JavaScript Reference application uses WCF Data Services to retrieve and modify database data. The application exposes a server-side WCF Data Service named EntryService.svc that supports querying, adding, updating, and deleting entries. jQuery Ajax calls are made against the WCF Data Service to perform the database operations from the browser. The OData protocol makes this easy. Authentication is handled on the server with a ChangeInterceptor. Only authenticated users are allowed to update the JavaScript Reference entry database. JavaScript Unit Tests In order to build the JavaScript Reference application, I depended on JavaScript unit tests. I needed the unit tests, in particular, to write the JavaScript merge functions which merge entry change sets from the server with existing entries in browser local storage. In order for unit tests to be useful, they need to run fast. I ran my unit tests after each build. For this reason, I did not want to run the unit tests within the context of a browser. Instead, I ran the unit tests using server-side JavaScript (the Microsoft Script Control). The source code that you can download at the end of this blog entry includes a project named JavaScriptReference.UnitTests that contains all of the JavaScripts unit tests. JavaScript Integration Tests Because not every feature of an application can be tested by unit tests, the JavaScript Reference application also includes integration tests. I wrote the integration tests using Selenium RC in combination with ASP.NET Unit Tests. The Selenium tests run against all of the target browsers for the JavaScript Reference application: IE 8, Chrome 8, Firefox 3.6, and Safari 5. However, they provide test coverage for actual browsers. Furthermore, if you are using Visual Studio ALM, you can run the tests automatically every night as part of your standard nightly build. You can view the Selenium tests by opening the JavaScriptReference.QATests project. Summary I plan to write more detailed blog entries about this application over the next week. I want to discuss each of the features – HTML5 local storage, HTML5 offline apps, jQuery templates, automatic script combining and minification, JavaScript unit tests, Selenium tests -- in more detail. • SSIS Configuration error: Cannot retrieve configuration table schema

  I'm trying to add a simple configuration to a SSIS package, of type SQL Server, so stored in a table. At the end of the wizard, when it goes to try and write a new row to the nominated table to store the configuration it fails with the error: TITLE: Microsoft Visual Studio Could not complete wizard actions. Cannot retrieve configuration table schema. (Microsoft.DataTransformationServices.Wizards) I can't seem to resolve this. The configuration connection has full permissions on the table, and it sees it and can read from it as it reports there is no current data for the filter I provide. It just wont write to it. A Google search of the error message above in quotes returns literally no hits! Any suggestions? Glenn

• NATUPnP IStaticPortMappingCollection::Add returns HRESULT 0x80040214

  I'm attempting to use Microsoft's NATUPnP library to create a port mapping. Unfortunately, I'm unable to. My router supports UPnP, it is enabled, and I can create mappings with other (pre-built) applications. I can also read existing mappings. When I call the Add function, it fails and returns HRESULT 0x80040214 (which is undocumented). I have absolutely no idea what might be going on. • XP Deploying issues due to msvcr90.dll trying to load FlsAlloc

  I have an application build with VS2008 SP1a (9.0.30729.4148) on Windows 7 x64 that does not want to start under XP. The message is The application failed to initialize properly (0x80000003). Click on OK to terminate the application.. I checked with depends.exe and found that msvcr90.dll does try to load FlsAlloc from KERNEL32.dll - and FlsAlloc is available only starting with Vista. I'm sure it is not used by the application. How to solve the issue? • Installing Visual Studio 2003 on Windows 7 64-bit

  My team is currently supporting a 1.1 app and we are installing VS.NET 2003 on Windows 7. We haven't had any issues on the 32-bit machines, but FrontPage Server Extensions are failing to install on my 64-bit machine. Others on the Interwebs say that they have done this successfully, so I wanted to know if anyone here has and if they know of a solution. The specific issue is that FPSE (to clarify, I'm installing "FrontPage 2002 Server Extensions for IIS 7.0") fails to install correctly. In EventViewer I get the error: Microsoft FrontPage Server Extensions: Error #3004f Message: Unable to read configuration information for Microsoft Internet Information Server: ImpersonateLoggedOnUser Error. I've looded for errors with ImpersonateLoggedOnUser on 64-bit and did find a case where it fails on 64-bit when UAC is turned off (which I did have it off). I turned UAC back on, ran command prompt as administrator, and ran msiexec on the FPSE package. Still no dice.   Todays cause of hair loss has been the following scenario: I have a service that takes 2 strings and returns another. I have all the clientAccessPolicy stuff in place. when I run the silverlight app the difference is that it runs everything async ... as such the only message i directly get back rom wcf is server not found. • jquery.autocomplete doesn't work in compability mode

  I've read all the results I can find on SO about this without finding anything that applies to me, so don't judge me too quickly :) I am using jquery.autocomplete downloaded from here: http://www.dyve.net/jquery/?autocomplete together with http://ajax.microsoft.com/ajax/jquery/jquery-1.3.2.js This all works well in IE8 and FF, but as soon as I activate compability mode in IE8 I keep getting: Microsoft JScript runtime error: Object doesn't support this property or method When looking in the call stack, This is the one where it breaks: <script type="text/javascript"> $().ready(function() { $("#friendsearch").autocomplete("/Account/FindFriends"); }); </script> and then the calling function is this: if ( jQuery.readyList ) { // Execute all of them jQuery.each( jQuery.readyList, function(){ this.call( document, jQuery ); }); // Reset the list of functions jQuery.readyList = null; } where this line throws the error: this.call( document, jQuery ); Does anybody know why this happens?
