• Desktop background won't change until restart

  I'm new to Ubuntu and indeed Linux systems. I have 11.04 installed on my laptop. Here's the problem. When i select a picture for the desktop background, it says that Desktop Background has been changed but the changes do not apply right away. It is only after I have restarted the system that the changes will appear. This did not happen before. When i first started using this OS a few months ago the changes applied immediately. So what have i done that made this start acting wonky. Thank you for any help.

Suddenly these days I am a bit worried about learning the new stuff that is there for me as a programmer. I develop in my spare time so I don't get enough time to read books or blogs. So my question to some of you guys is how should I plan to learn new things, should I at least dedicate two-three evenings for new stuff, maybe ebooks while travelling is a good option too. How do you people plan to learn,should I also start to develop with whatever I learnt? As far as learning is concerned, should I just pick up the basics and then implement it or I should seek deeper understanding of the subject?

• using x11 forwarding with ssh and vnc?

  I am working on a remote cluster via ssh with the -X option, because I need to visualize data and graphs, over a vpn protocol. Sometime due to the instability of the internet connection I lose my session. They told me I could use vnc in order to not lose my current session, so that if the internet connection drops I can reconnect and continue with my previously open session. What I do is to log in the remote cluster 'remote.cluster' and type vncserver :1 then I open another terminal on my system and I type ssh -C -NL 5901:remote.cluster:5901 [email protected] & Then I start vinagre on my system and I connect using ssh protocol. The problem is that I do not have x11 forwarding and I cannot open windows. If I try to connect using the vnc protocol with vinagre it doesn't connect, because I get something as connection timeout. What should I do?

Open sudo gedit /etc/bumblebee/bumblebee.conf and change Driver= to Driver=nvidia and KernelDriver=nvidia-current to KernelDriver=nvidia. Restart the system and run optirun glxgears. This message gives me: The Bumblebee daemon has not been started yet or the socket path /var/run/bumblebee.socket was incorrect. Could not connect to bumblebee daemon - is it running? Anybody have idea?!

• Using JPA 2.0 with WebLogic Server 10.3.4 and Eclipse

  Beginning in Oracle Enterprise Pack for Eclipse (OEPE) 11.1.1.6.1, we introduced a new feature for WebLogic Server configuration called Server Extensions. Similar in concept to project facets, Server Extensions allow us to install additional technologies, libraries, configurations, etc into an existing server runtime. WebLogic Server 10.3.4 introduces new support for Java Persistence 2.0, the new JEE 6 standard entity access. In order to start developing JPA 2.0 applications with WebLogic Server 10.3.4, a SmartUpdate patch must be applied to add and configure the EclipseLink libraries. More information on the manual EclipseLink installation and configuration can be found here. OEPE provides a Server Extension for JPA 2.0, making the addition and configuration of JPA 2.0 and EclipseLink much easier. When defining a new WebLogic Server 10.3.4 configuration, simply click the Install link for Java Persistence 2.0 and OEPE will take care of the WebLogic Server enablement for JPA 2.0.

  I'm currently working on a website that I am really looking to optimise in terms of search engines, i've been submitting between 5-20 directory submissions daily, i've validated and optimised my code and i've joined a lot of forums etc to speak of the website in question, however, I don't seem to be making much of an impact in terms of Google. I know that S.E.O. takes a while to start making an impact, and that Google prefers sites that a regularly updated and aged, but are there any more practices that can really help with organic results in Search engines. I have looked on Google itself, and a few other SE's but nobody is willing to talk about extensive S.E.O. practices as they normally don't want people knowing their formula's for S.E.O., also does anyone know of a decent piece of software that really looks into the in's and out's of your page and provides feedback, I usually use http://www.woorank.com, but only using one program doesn't show if it's exactly correct in what it's saying. If anyone could help it would be much appreciated, thank you very much.

• How to reset settings when Unity won't finish booting?

  I have a new 12.04 installation and I messed things up after trying to move /home to an NTFS partition, which I later learned was a bad idea. I removed references to the NTFS partition on fstab and created new users on the ext4 / partition. Now I can't get Unity to start up properly for any user. I get the GUI with only three Launch icons (none of which are clickable) and no bar at the top. The keyboard seems to the nonfunctional after I enter my credentials. The interesting thing is that I can boot when I go through recovery mode and select resume. I wonder whether I am creating the new users properly. What is the correct protocol for doing so in order to ensure that they can run Unity?

• SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 and the Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called error message

  When trying to install SQL Server 2008 Service Pack 1 to a SQL Server 2008 instance that is running on a virtual machine, the installer will start:   But then after about 20 seconds I receive the following error message: TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure. ----------------------------- SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error: Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created. ------------------------------ BUTTONS: OK ------------------------------ Searching for this issue I found that several people have the same problem and there is no clear solution.  Some had success with closing windows or Internet Explorer but that didn’t work for me; what did work is to make sure the SQL Server 2008 “Please wait while SQL Server 2008 Setup processes the current operation.” dialog is selected and has the focus when it first shows up.  Selected (with the current focus) it looks like this:   Without focus the dialog looks like this: Add a comment if you find out any information about how to consistently get around this issue or why it is happening in the first place.

• Detecting Duplicates Using Oracle Business Rules

  Recently I was involved with a Business Process Management Proof of Concept (BPM PoC) where we wanted to show how customers could use Oracle Business Rules (OBR) to easily define some rules to detect certain conditions, such as duplicate account numbers, duplicate names, high transaction amounts, etc, in a set of transactions. Traditionally you would have to loop through the transactions and compare each transaction with each other to find matching conditions. This is not particularly nice as it relies on more traditional approaches (coding) and is not the most efficient way. OBR is a great place to house these types’ of rules as it allows users/developers to externalise the rules, in a simpler manner, externalising the rules from the message flows and allows users to change them when required. So I went ahead looking for some examples. After quite a bit of time spent Googling, I did not find much out in the blogosphere. In fact the best example was actually from...... wait for it...... Oracle Documentation! (http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E28271_01/user.1111/e10228/rules_start.htm#ASRUG228) However, if you followed the link there was not much explanation provided with the example. So the aim of this article is to provide a little more explanation to the example so that it can be better understood. Note: I won’t be covering the BPM parts in great detail. Use case: Payment instruction file is required to be processed. Before instruction file can be processed it needs to be approved by a business user. Before the approval process, it would be useful to run the payment instruction file through OBR to look for transactions of interest. The output of the OBR can then be used to flag the transactions for the approvers to investigate. Example BPM Process So let’s start defining the Business Rules Dictionary. For the input into our rules, we will be passing in an array of payments which contain some basic information for our demo purposes. Input to Business Rules And for our output we want to have an array of rule output messages. Note that the element I am using for the output is only for one rule message element and not an array. We will configure the Business Rules component later to return an array instead. Output from Business Rules Business Rule – Create Dictionary Fill in all the details and click OK. Open the Business Rules component and select Decision Functions from the side. Modify the Decision Function Configuration Select the decision function and click on the edit button (the pencil), don’t worry that JDeveloper indicates that there is an error with the decision function. Then click the Ouputs tab and make sure the checkbox under the List column is checked, this is to tell the Business Rules component that it should return an array of rule message elements. Updating the Decision Service Next we will define the actual rules. Click on Ruleset1 on the side and then the Create Rule in the IF/THEN Rule section. Creating new rule in ruleset Ok, this is where some detailed explanation is required. Remember that the input to this Business Rules dictionary is a list of payments, each of those payments were of the complex type PaymentType. Each of those payments in the Oracle Business Rules engine is treated as a fact in its working memory. Implemented rule So in the IF/THEN rule, the first task is to grab two PaymentType facts from the working memory and assign them to temporary variable names (payment1 and payment2 in our example). Matching facts Once we have them in the temporary variables, we can then start comparing them to each other. For our demonstration we want to find payments where the account numbers were the same but the account name was different. Suspicious payment instruction And to stop the rule from comparing the same facts to each other, over and over again, we have to include the last test. Stop rule from comparing endlessly And that’s it! No for loops, no need to keep track of what you have or have not compared, OBR handles all that for you because everything is done in its working memory. And once all the tests have been satisfied we need to assert a new fact for the output. Assert the output fact Save your Business Rules. Next step is to complete the data association in the BPM process. Pay extra care to use Copy List instead of the default Copy when doing data association at an array level. Input and output data association Deploy and test. Test data Rule matched Parting words: Ideally you would then use the output of the Business Rules component to then display/flag the transactions which triggered the rule so that the approver can investigate. • MSR Issue on 12.1 Enterprise Controllers

  We've noticed a problem with MSR initialization and synchronization on Enterprise Controllers that are using Java 7u45. If you're running into the issue, these jobs fail with Java errors. Java 7u45 is bundled with Oracle Solaris 11.1 SRU 12, so if you're using that version or if you plan to use it, you should be aware of this issue. There's a simple fix. You can do the fix before upgrading to SRU 12, but you can't do it before you install the Enterprise Controller. First, log on to the Enterprise Controller system and stop the EC using the ecadm command. This command is in the /opt/SUNWxvmoc/bin directory on Oracle Solaris systems and in the /opt/sun/xvmoc/bin directory on Linux systems: ecadm stop -w Then run this command to fix the issue: cacaoadm set-param java-flags=`cacaoadm get-param -v java-flags -i oem-ec | sed 's/Xss256k/Xss384k/'` -i oem-ec And then restart the EC: ecadm start -w Once you apply this fix, you should be set.

• Junior software developer - How to understand web aplications in depth?

  I am currently a junior developer in web applications and specifically in asp.net mvc technology. My problem is that the c# senior developer in the company has no experience with this technology and I try to learn without any guidance. I went through all tutorials (e.g music store), codeplex projects and also read pro asp.net mvc 4. However, most of the examples are about crud and e-commerce applications. What I don't understand is how dependency injection fits in web applications (I have realized that is not only used for facilitating unit testing) or when i should use a custom model binder or how to model the business logic when there is already a database schema in place. I read the forum quite often and it would very helpful if some experienced developers could give me an insight about how to proceed. Do I need to read some books to understand the overall idea behind web applications? And what kind of application should I start building myself - I don't think it would be useful to create similar examples with the tutorials.

  First things first: I have absolutely no interest in learning how to crack systems for personal enrichment, hurting other people or doing anything remotely malicious. I understand the basis of many exploits (XSS, SQL injection, use after free etc.), though I've never performed any myself. I even have some idea about how to guard web applications from common exploits (like the aforementioned XSS and SQL injection) Reading this question about the Internet Explorer zero-day vulnerability from the Security SE piqued my curiosity and made me wonder: how did someone even find out about this exploit? What tools did they use? How did they know what to look for? I'm wary about visiting hacker dens online for fear of getting my own system infected (the Defcon stories make me paranoid). So what's a good, safe place to start learning?

• Day 1 - Finding Like Minds

  So, is being a Game Developer any different from being an IT Developer? I picture a poorly lit environment where I get to purchase my own desk lamp; I'm thinking one of those huge lava lamps that pump out so much heat you could fry an egg on it. To my right: a "great wall" of empty coke cans dwarf me. Eating my last slice of pizza I look across my desk to see a fellow developer with a smug look on his face;  he's just coded his latest module for the game and it looks like he's in nirvana. My duty, of course, is to remind him to keep focused on the job at hand. So, picking up my trusty elastic and aerodynamically crafted paper bullet I begin a 10 minute war of welts and laughter which is promptly abrupted by our Project Manager demanding more details from our morning Scrum meeting. After providing about 5 minutes of geek speak and several words of comfort to make his eyes glaze over...it hits me, the idea for the module...beckoning my developer friend over, we quickly shoo the Project Manager away and begin our brainstorming frenzy ... now, where'd I put that full can of coke? OK. OK. This isn't probably the most ideal game developer environment, but it definitely sounds fun to me...and from what I gather is nothing like most game development companies. But I'm not doing this blog series to "go pro"; like I stated in my first post I want to make a 2D game from an idea my best friend and I drummed up long, long ago. I'm in this for the passion AND I want to see how easy it is for us .Net Developers to create a game. So where do I start? Where can I find like minded individuals? What technologies are there? What do I need to make a video game? The questions are endless....AND...since I already have an idea ... lets start with ... Technology (yes, I'm a geek, live with it...) Technology OK. Predominantly, games are still made in C++ or even C. I'm not sure how much assembly code is floating around lately, however, that is not my concern. I do know C / C++ from my past, enough to even get me by, but I'm mainly interested in a recent, not-so-new, technology called XNA. What is XNA?
