  If I am correct to assume that once I place a DVD/disk in my optical drive (or use a USB flash drive or external HDD for that matter; for arguments sake) that this action would in effect trigger an 'event' in Windows. I would like to use this 'triggered event' to enable an entire copy of that device. Example: if my optical H: reads a disk OR the user closes the tray OR ... then xcopy /S H: "F:\Copy of H"

  For some reason, over the past year I have tried to install imagemagick on my windows 7 machine running with XAMPP server (a LAMP package for windows) and I have failed every single try to the point that I think it is impossible, some people claim to have done it but I have yet to see it with my own eyes, I have tried every tutorial, user directions, instructions, you name it.   I know what the /burnmemory switch does on Windows, but I'd like to understand what Windows is doing under the hood to support it. It's described on msdn as the "amount of memory, in megabytes, that Windows cannot use". Does this mean simply that the kernel does not allow user virtual memory mapping into this area? How is this accomplished in the kernel, and are there other restrictions that the kernel will make when burnmemory is set?

• Using Dropbox as a cloud based file share - does everyone need an upgraded account?

  We have a file share in our small office (3-5 users). We now have the need for the files to be accessible outside of the office. I like the idea of dropbox - we have been using it for small remote sharing. If we buy the upgrade account, and move 30 to 70 gigs of files to it, will every user have to have the pro account? I have submitted this question to dropbox - but thought that the advice of users here would also be valuable

  I've been using Shadow User and Deep freeze for windows xp. But I don't think its compatible with windows 7. Do you know of any application that can achieve the same thing? Please don't tell me to use Returnil virtual system because I've had a really bad experience with it when I'm using xp. The system just restarted over and over.   As the subject title says, has anyone any suggestions for how to achieve smooth scrolling of the text display in emacs? The various approaches suggested on the Emacs wiki seem to work only in Linux. I'm using EmacsW32 for what it matters, but I tested with the standard Emacs distribution as well, with no results. As a long time Vim user, I'm fairly surprised that Emacs cannot scroll smoothly by itself.

• How do I disable animations in Preview in Lion?

  For example, open up a pdf and set view to two pages and hit arrow key up/down. Is there a way to get rid of the animation? Preview feels really snappy and fast, and to have animations like that just spoils all the fun. Might seem like a proper first world problem, especially if you're just a casual user of pdfs. But I frequently have 10+ pdfs open for referencing purposes (that is, a lot of flicking back and fourth), and the animation just drives me nuts.

  I am running a cakephp webapp on Linode LAMP. I am finding that my temp files are created with root:root ownership. But the webapp is running with Apache's permissions (www-data). This causes warnings any time there is a new file created because it is not writable for user www-data. How do I change the default ownership to www-data on any new files created in the temp folder?   I have a laptop with a 250GB HDD. I have an existing installation of Kubuntu across three partitions (A 20GB one for /, 2GB for swap, and something like 97GB for /home). If I add another partition, use that as / for a Mint 13 install, and then use the existing /home partition as Linux Mint's home folder (different user names), are there any dangers (besides badly done partitioning, and other dumb things like that)?

  I could just compress the directory as a .zip file w/ a password (which I think would just look like a compressed folder w/ a password) but I'd like something with less overhead (i.e., none of the decompression, etc.) Any ideas? Clarification/update: I'd like to have anyone be able to access it from another computer if they know the password. I.e., I don't want them to have to log in as a different user, etc., but, rather just enter a password.

  I would like to configure a task like "child control software", so it would hibernate the pc at certain times. Is it possible to prevent modification (here: pausing) of a task through requiring the entering of the admin password to modify, EVEN THOUGH the currently-logged-in (and only) user is the admin account itself? • cygwin running commands with switches when ssh in

  When I SSH into a Windows 2008 R2 box and try to run a command with switches like /cygdrive/c/directory/Reports.exe /ReportID=1 /DateRange=LastWeek the command just hangs and never finishes. I can see the Reports.exe spawn a process under the user but never finishes. If I RDP into the box open cygwin terminal and run the exact command it works. Any reason why I can't run the command when I SSH in?
