• Mysterious socket / HttpWebRequest timeouts

  I have a great app for capturing shoutcast streams :-) . So far, it worked with a charm on dozens of machines, and never exhibited behaviour I found now, which is ultimately very strange. I use HttpWebRequest to connect to the shoutcast server and when I connect two streams, everything's OK. When I go for third one, response = (HttpWebResponse)request.GetResponse(); throws with Connection Timeout exception. WTF? I must point out that I had to create .config for the application in order to allow my headers to be sent out from the application, otherwise it wouldn't work at all. • Linq: the linked objects are null, why?

  Hello, I have several linked tables (entities). I'm trying to get the entities using the following linq: ObjectQuery<Location> locations = context.Location; ObjectQuery<ProductPrice> productPrice = context.ProductPrice; ObjectQuery<Product> products = context.Product; IQueryable<ProductPrice> res1 = from pp in productPrice join loc in locations on pp.Location equals loc join prod in products on pp.Product equals prod where prod.Title.ToLower().IndexOf(Word.ToLower()) > -1 select pp; This query returns 2 records, ProductPrice objects that have linked object Location and Product but they are null and I cannot understand why. If I try to fill them in the linq as below: res = from pp in productPrice join loc in locations on pp.Location equals loc join prod in products on pp.Product equals prod where prod.Title.ToLower().IndexOf(Word.ToLower()) > -1 select new ProductPrice { ProductPriceId = pp.ProductPriceId, Product = prod }; I have the exception "The entity or complex type 'PBExplorerData.ProductPrice' cannot be constructed in a LINQ to Entities query" Could someone please explain me what happens and what I need to do? • Bitrate Switching in xml playlist not loading video

  Using JW Player ver 5.4 and JW Embedder. Plugins are grid by Dabbler and fbit (Facebook). The Bitrate switching is not working. Does work fine for one video with HTML5 Video tag. When more than one video, it only shows the first video pic. Works fine with no bitrate switching.   I have a WCF service which can run as Console App and a Windows Service. I have exactly the same code, but running in a windows service and I get the following error when I try to call any of the methods from a client: System.ServiceModel.Security.MessageSecurityException was unhandled Message="An unsecured or incorrectly secured fault was received from the other party. See the inner FaultException for the fault code and detail." Source="mscorlib" StackTrace: Server stack trace: at System.ServiceModel.Channels.SecurityChannelFactory`1.SecurityRequestChannel.ProcessReply(Message reply, SecurityProtocolCorrelationState correlationState, TimeSpan timeout) ...... I'm assuming that it has something to do with acces to system resources from the Windows Service. I've tried running it under the same account as the console app, but no luck. Does anyone have any ideas?

• Missing line number in stack trace eventhough the PDB files are included

  This is running me nuts. I have this web service implemented w/ C# using VS 2008. I publish it on IIS. I have modified the release build so the pdb files are copied along with the dlls into the target directory on inetpub. Also web.config file has debug=true. Then I call a web service that throws an exception. The stack trace does not contain the line numbers. I have no idea what I am missing here, any ideas? Additional Info: If I run the web app using VS built-in web server, it works and I get line numbers in stack trace. But if I copy the same files (pdb and dll) that the VS built-in web server is using to IIS, still the line numbers are missing in stack trace. It seems that there is something related to the IIS that ignores the pdb files! Update When I publish to IIS, all the pdb files are published under the bin directory and everything looks fine. But when I go to "C:\Windows\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v2.0.50727\Temporary ASP.NET Files" under the specific directory related to my project, I can see that the assembly (.dll) files are all there, but there is no pdb files. But this does not happen if I run the project using VS built-in web server. So if I copy the pdb files manually to the temp folder, I can see the line numbers. Any idea why the pdb files are not copied to the temp folder? BTW, when I attach to the worker process I can see that it says Symbols loaded!

• h2 (embedded mode ) database files problem

  There is a h2-database file in my src directory (Java, Eclipse): h2test.db The problem: starting the h2.jar from the command line (and thus the h2 browser interface on port 8082), I have created 2 tables, 'test1' and 'test2' in h2test.db and I have put some data in them; when trying to access them from java code (JDBC), it throws me "table not found exception". A "show tables" from the java code shows a resultset with 0 rows. Also, when creating a new table ('newtest') from the java code (CREATE TABLE ... etc), I cannot see it when starting the h2.jar browser interface afterwards; just the other two tables ('test1' and 'test2') are shown (but then the newly created table 'newtest' is accessible from the java code). I'm inexperienced with embedded databases; I believe I'm doing something fundamentally wrong here. My assumption is, that I'm accessing the same file - once from the java app, and once from the h2 console-browser interface. I cannot seem to understand it, what am I doing wrong here?

• Load Images in WPF application

  I am not familiar with WPF, and I just feel quite confusing. I am trying to create a little computer game, and there are elements I want to display dynamically. I use Image class and add the images to a canvas. But I'm not sure whether it's a good practice. I feel that adding controls to canvas seem to be a little wired. And I'm a little concerned about the performance, because I may need many images. The real problem is, I can't load the images from the image files. I see an example in a text book like this (XMAL): <Image Panel.ZIndex="0" Margin="0,0,0,0" Name ="image1"> <Image.Source> <BitmapImage UriSource="Bell.gif" /> </Image.Source> </Image> Where Bell.gif is added into the project. And I tried to copy this in code to create an image. new Image { Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri("Blockade.bmp"))} But I got invalid Uri exception. After some search in the Internet, I found that loading resources dynamically seems to be difficult. Can I load the files added to the project dynamically? If I use absolute path then it's OK. But I can't expect every computer will put the files in the same location. Can I use relative path? I tried new Image { Source = new BitmapImage(new Uri(@"Pictures\Blank Land.bmp", UriKind.Relative)) } But it doesn't work. (The image is blank) Thanks.

In my DSL, I've made use of symbols to signify an anchor, which can be used to put a fork (or a tee, if you prefer) in the pipeline. • Class; Struct; Enum confusion, what is better?

  I have 46 rows of information, 2 columns each row ("Code Number", "Description"). These codes are returned to the client dependent upon the success or failure of their initial submission request. I do not want to use a database file (csv, sqlite, etc) for the storage/access. The closest type that I can think of for how I want these codes to be shown to the client is the exception class. Correct me if I'm wrong, but from what I can tell enums do not allow strings, though this sort of structure seemed the better option initially based on how it works (e.g. 100 = "missing name in request"). Thinking about it, creating a class might be the best modus operandi. However I would appreciate more experienced advice or direction and input from those who might have been in a similar situation. • Oracle Data Provider and casting

  I use Oracle's specific data provider, not the Microsoft provider that is being discontinued. The thing I've found about ODP.NET is how picky it is with data types. Where JDBC and other ADO providers just convert and make things work, ODP.NET will throw an invalid cast exception unless you get it exactly right. Consider this code: String strSQL = "SELECT DOCUMENT_SEQ.NEXTVAL FROM DUAL"; OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand(strSQL, conn); reader = cmd.ExecuteReader(); if (reader != null && reader.Read()) { Int64 id = reader.GetInt64(0); return id; } Due to ODP.NET's pickiness on conversion, this doesn't work. My usual options are: 1) Retrieve into a Decimal and return it with a cast to an Int64 (I don't like this because Decimal is just overkill, and at least once I remember reading it was deprecated...) Decimal id = reader.GetDecimal(0); return (Int64)id; 2) Or cast in the SQL statement to make sure it fits into Int64, like NUMBER(18) String strSQL = "SELECT CAST(DOCUMENT_SEQ.NEXTVAL AS NUMBER(18)) FROM DUAL"; I do (2), because I feel its just not clean pulling a number into a .NET Decimal when my domain types are Int32 or Int64. Other providers I've used are nice (smart) enough to do the conversion on the fly. Any suggestions from the ODP.NET gurus?

• Duck type testing with C# 4 for dynamic objects.

  I'm wanting to have a simple duck typing example in C# using dynamic objects. It would seem to me, that a dynamic object should have HasValue/HasProperty/HasMethod methods with a single string parameter for the name of the value, property, or method you are looking for before trying to run against it. I'm trying to avoid try/catch blocks, and deeper reflection if possible. It just seems to be a common practice for duck typing in dynamic languages (JS, Ruby, Python etc.) that is to test for a property/method before trying to use it, then falling back to a default, or throwing a controlled exception. The example below is basically what I want to accomplish. If the methods described above don't exist, does anyone have premade extension methods for dynamic that will do this? Example: In JavaScript I can test for a method on an object fairly easily. //JavaScript function quack(duck) { if (duck && typeof duck.quack === "function") { return duck.quack(); } return null; //nothing to return, not a duck } How would I do the same in C#? //C# 4 dynamic Quack(dynamic duck) { //how do I test that the duck is not null, //and has a quack method? //if it doesn't quack, return null }

• How do you remove invalid hexadecimal characters from an XML-based data source prior to constructing

  Is there any easy/general way to clean an XML based data source prior to using it in an XmlReader so that I can gracefully consume XML data that is non-conformant to the hexadecimal character restrictions placed on XML? Note: The solution needs to handle XML data sources that use character encodings other than UTF-8, e.g. by specifying the character encoding at the XML document declaration. Not mangling the character encoding of the source while stripping invalid hexadecimal characters has been a major sticking point. The removal of invalid hexadecimal characters should only remove hexadecimal encoded values, as you can often find href values in data that happens to contains a string that would be a string match for a hexadecimal character. Background: I need to consume an XML-based data source that conforms to a specific format (think Atom or RSS feeds), but want to be able to consume data sources that have been published which contain invalid hexadecimal characters per the XML specification. In .NET if you have a Stream that represents the XML data source, and then attempt to parse it using an XmlReader and/or XPathDocument, an exception is raised due to the inclusion of invalid hexadecimal characters in the XML data. My current attempt to resolve this issue is to parse the Stream as a string and use a regular expression to remove and/or replace the invalid hexadecimal characters, but I am looking for a more performant solution.

• Including variables inside curly braces in a Zend config ini file on Linux

  I am trying to include a variable in a .ini file setting by surrounding it with curly braces, and Zend is complaining that it cannot parse it properly on Linux. It works properly on Windows, though: welcome_message = Welcome, {0}. • Titanium Appcelerator - After enabling cloud services I get UnicodeDecodeError when compiling for Android

  I've got an app that has a UTF8 name (hebrew). I use the platform/android/AndroidManifest.xml file for this. I've managed to narrow it down to the Ti.cloudpush module. only when I enable this module I get the error. • Best approach to storing image pixels in bottom-up order in Java

  I have an array of bytes representing an image in Windows BMP format and I would like my library to present it to the Java application as a BufferedImage, without copying the pixel data. The main problem is that all implementations of Raster in the JDK store image pixels in top-down, left-to-right order whereas BMP pixel data is stored bottom-up, left-to-right. If this is not compensated for, the resulting image will be flipped vertically. The most obvious "solution" is to set the SampleModel's scanlineStride property to a negative value and change the band offsets (or the DataBuffer's array offset) to point to the top-left pixel, i.e. the first pixel of the last line in the array. Unfortunately this does not work because all of the SampleModel constructors throw an exception if given a negative scanlineStride argument. I am currently working around it by forcing the scanlineStride field to a negative value using reflection, but I would like to do it in a cleaner and more portable way if possible. e.g. is there another way to fool the Raster or SampleModel into arranging the pixels in bottom-up order but without breaking encapsulation? Or is there a library somewhere that will wrap the Raster and SampleModel, presenting the pixel rows in reverse order? I would prefer to avoid the following approaches: Copying the whole image (for performance reasons. The code must process hundreds of large (= 1Mpixels) images per second and although the whole image must be available to the application, it will normally access only a tiny (but hard-to-predict) portion of the image.) Modifying the DataBuffer to perform coordinate transformation (this actually works but is another "dirty" solution because the buffer should not need to know about the scanline/pixel layout.) Re-implementing the Raster and/or SampleModel interfaces from scratch (but I have a hunch that I will be unable to avoid this.)

• Any good tools or tips for fuzz testing Windows forms applications?

  I'm maintaining a ~300K LOC C# legacy thick-client application with a Windows.Forms interface. The app is full of little bugs and quirks. For example, I recently discovered a bug where if a users edits and tabs (not clicks) through cells on a DataViewGrid, and leaves the a certain cell selected, the app gets an "Object reference not set to an instance of an object" exception. I discover (or get a bug report of) something new like this about every week or two. I've had enough, and was thinking of trying some sort of fuzz testing on the application to try to ferret out undiscovered issues. If I roll-my-own fuzz testing, I'd assume I at least need to be able to generate test harnesses that run pieces of my app (main window, FormX, FormY, FormZ, ...) independently and try to inject events into them. I was trying to look for tools suited for this, but so far have come up with nothing for Win Forms. (There seems to be no shortage of fuzz testing tools for web apps, however). Any helpful ideas?
