• (x86) Assembler Optimization

  I'm building a compiler/assembler/linker in Java for the x86-32 (IA32) processor targeting Windows. High-level concepts of a "language" (in essential a Java API for creating executables) are translated into opcodes, which then are wrapped and outputted to a file. The translation process has several phases, one is the translation between languages: the highest-level code is translated into the medium-level code which is then translated into the lowest-level code (probably more than 3 levels). My problem is the following; if I have higher-level code (X and Y) translated to lower-level code (x, y, U and V), then an example of such a translation is, in pseudo-code: x + U(f) // generated by X + V(f) + y // generated by Y (An easy example) where V is the opposite of U (compare with a stack push as U and a pop as V). This needs to be 'optimized' into: x + y (essentially removing the "useless" code) My idea was to use regular expressions. For the above case, it'll be a regular expression looking like this: x:(U(x)+V(x)):null, meaning for all x find U(x) followed by V(x) and replace by null. Imagine more complex regular expressions, for more complex optimizations. This should work on all levels. What do you suggest? What would be a good approach to optimize in these situations?

• Using OUTPUT/INTO within instead of insert trigger invalidates 'inserted' table

  I have a problem using a table with an instead of insert trigger. The table I created contains an identity column. I need to use an instead of insert trigger on this table. I also need to see the value of the newly inserted identity from within my trigger which requires the use of OUTPUT/INTO within the trigger. The problem is then that clients that perform INSERTs cannot see the inserted values. For example, I create a simple table: CREATE TABLE [MyTable]( [MyID] [int] IDENTITY(1,1) NOT NULL, [MyBit] [bit] NOT NULL, CONSTRAINT [PK_MyTable_MyID] PRIMARY KEY NONCLUSTERED ( [MyID] ASC )) Next I create a simple instead of trigger: create trigger [trMyTableInsert] on [MyTable] instead of insert as BEGIN DECLARE @InsertedRows table( MyID int, MyBit bit); INSERT INTO [MyTable] ([MyBit]) OUTPUT inserted.MyID, inserted.MyBit INTO @InsertedRows SELECT inserted.MyBit FROM inserted; -- LOGIC NOT SHOWN HERE THAT USES @InsertedRows END; Lastly, I attempt to perform an insert and retrieve the inserted values: DECLARE @tbl TABLE (myID INT) insert into MyTable (MyBit) OUTPUT inserted.MyID INTO @tbl VALUES (1) SELECT * from @tbl The issue is all I ever get back is zero. I can see the row was correctly inserted into the table. I also know that if I remove the OUTPUT/INTO from within the trigger this problem goes away. Any thoughts as to what I'm doing wrong?   Does anyone know how to get a CodeDomProvider in the new Microsoft.VisualStudio.TextTemplating.VSHost.BaseCodeGeneratorWithSite from the Visual Studio 2010 SDK? I used to get access to it just by in mere inheritance of the class Microsoft.CustomTool.BaseCodeGeneratorWithSite, but now with this new class it is not there. I see a GlobalServiceProvider and a SiteServiceProvider but I can't find any example on how to use them. • DesignMode with Controls

  Has anyone found a useful solution to the DesignMode problem when developing controls? The issue is that if you nest controls then DesignMode only works for the first level. The second and lower levels DesignMode will always return FALSE. The standard hack has been to look at the name of the process that is running and if it is "DevEnv.EXE" then it must be studio thus DesignMode is really TRUE. The problem with that is looking for the ProcessName works its way around through the registry and other strange parts with the end result that the user might not have the required rights to see the process name. In addition this strange route is very slow. So we have had to pile additional hacks to use a singleton and if an error is thrown when asking for the process name then assume that DesignMode is FALSE. A nice clean way to determine DesignMode is in order. Acually getting Microsoft to fix it internally to the framework would be even better!

• Enabling/Disabling Aero from a Windows Service

  I have some code to enable/disable the Windows Aero service in Vista, and I would like to run it in a Windows Service. The code works in a standalone application, but when I run it from a Service, nothing happens. No errors or exceptions are thrown. I realise that running code in a service is a different scope than running code in an application, but in this case, how would I enable/disable Aero from the service? Is this even possible?   Hi, I am trying to write a custom theme for orchard and am not having much success so far. I have read Bertrand Le Roy's article on part alternates but I can't seem to get it to work. I am displaying a list of recent blog posts on the front page, pretty standard. I wish to change the markup produced by the meta data part i.e the time format. • Rails routing/polymorphism issue - how to model the following

  Hi all, I have an app where a 'user' belong to a 'client' or a 'vendor' (and client and vendor has_many users). In the admin namespace, I want to administer these users - so an admin would choose a client or a vendor, then nav to that client's or vendor's users. My question is, short of making the user model polymorphic, how could I model/route this? Here is what I have in terms of routing: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :clients admin.resources :vendors end I know I could do something like: map.namespace :admin do |admin| admin.resources :clients do |client| client.resources :users admin.resources :vendors do |vendor| vendor.resources :users end end But the above would definitely need me to treat the User as polymorphic. • Linear regression confidence intervals in SQL

  I'm using some fairly straight-forward SQL code to calculate the coefficients of regression (intercept and slope) of some (x,y) data points, using least-squares. This gives me a nice best-fit line through the data. However we would like to be able to see the 95% and 5% confidence intervals for the line of best-fit (the curves below). What these mean is that the true line has 95% probability of being below the upper curve and 95% probability of being above the lower curve. How can I calculate these curves? I have already read wikipedia etc. and done some googling but I haven't found understandable mathematical equations to be able to calculate this. • Verify an event was raised by mocked object

  In my unit test how can I verify that an event is raised by the mocked object. I have a View(UI) -- ViewModel -- DataProvider -- ServiceProxy. ServiceProxy makes async call to serivce operation. When async operation is complete a method on DataProvider is called (callback method is passed as a method parameter). The callback method then raise and event which ViewModel is listening to. For ViewModel test I mock DataProvider and verify that handler exists for event raised by DataProvider. When testing DataProvider I mock ServiceProxy, but how can I test that callback method is called and event is raised. • READING stderr from within Awk

  I want to keep SSH debug info separate (and logged) from other input. However, if I simply redirect stderr to a log file, I risk combining output from SSH and output from the remote process on the host machine (that might send something to stderr): $ ssh -v somemachine 2 file.log So, I want to filter out only those lines that match "debug1": $ ssh -v somemachine | awk '/debug1/ {print "file.log"; next} {print}' Good so far, BUT ssh's debug output goes to stderr. So... $ ssh -v somemachine 2& | awk '/debug1/ {print "file.log"; next} {print}' Foiled again! I don't want to mix stdout and stderr. BAD! What does a kid like me do? I was about to go the route of named pipes or some such wildeness, but really, all I need to know is how to get awk to match patterns from stderr ONLY.

• ClassCleanup in MSTest is static, but the build server uses nunit to run the unit tests. How can i a

  Hi All, MSTest has a [ClassCleanup()] attribute, which needs to be static as far as I can tell. I like to run through after my unit tests have run,and clean up my database. This all works great, however when I go to our build server and use our Nant build script, it seems like the unit tests are run with NUnit. NUnit doesn't seem to like the cleanup method to be static. It therefore ignores my tests in that class. What can I do to remedy this? I prefer to not use [TestCleanUp()] as that is run after each test. Does anyone have any suggestions? I know [TestCleanup()] aids in decoupling, but I really prefer the [ClassCleanup()] in this situation. • using compareTo in Binary Search Tree program

  I've been working on this program for a few days now and I've implemented a few of the primary methods in my BinarySearchTree class such as insert and delete. Insert seemed to be working fine, but once I try to delete I kept getting errors. So after playing around with the code I wanted to test my compareTo methods. I created two new nodes and tried to compare them and I get this error: Exception in thread "main" java.lang.ClassCastException: TreeNode cannot be cast to java.lang.Integer at java.lang.Integer.compareTo(Unknown Source) at TreeNode.compareTo(TreeNode.java:16) at BinarySearchTree.myComparision(BinarySearchTree.java:177) at main.main(main.java:14) Here is my class for creating the nodes: public class TreeNode<T> implements Comparable { protected TreeNode<T> left, right; protected Object element; public TreeNode(Object obj) { element=obj; left=null; right=null; } public int compareTo(Object node) { return ((Comparable) this.element).compareTo(node); } } Am I doing the compareTo method all wrong? • Strange routing

  How I can setup my rails app to respond to such urls: http://mydomain.com/white-halogene-lamp http://mydomain.com/children-lamps http://mydomain.com/contact-form The first one should link to my products controller, and show my product with this name The second one should link to my categories controller, and show the category with this name The third one should link to my sites controller, and show the site with this title. All three models (product, category, site) have a method to_seo, giving the mentioned above urls (after the slash) I know it's not the restful way, but please don't disuss here, it is wrong approach or not, that's not the question. The question is how to accomplish this weird routing ? I know we have catch all routes, but how I can tell rails to use different controllers on different urls in the catch all route ? Or have You an better idea ? I would avoid redirects to other urls.

  I'm using DotNetOpenAuth lib to work with Google(only) OpenId. And I'm retrieving Email without any problem. Google will not give a full name or nickname for their users. They ONLY give email address, and (I think, but perhaps only on a white list) the timezone.
