  • VS Solution and Mercurial repository layout for a c# project with plugins and external libraries.

    - by Joviee
I'm developing a project in .NET (using C# to be more specific). Using Visual Studio as an IDE. Using Mercurial for version control. I'll be using some third-party libraries: ThirdParty.Foo.dll ThirdParty.Bar.dll ThirdParty.Baz.dll And some in-house libraries: Company.A Company.B Company.C Company.D (References third party libraries) Company.E (References Company.A) The project itself will have the following components: Project.Core Project.DataModel (references in-house/third-party libraries) Project.GUI (references Core, DataModel, and in-house/third-party libraries) Project.PluginOne (references Core, DataModel, and in-house/third-party libraries) Project.PluginTwo (references Core, DataModel, and in-house/third-party libraries) * can be an arbitrary number of plugins * I'm quite new to Mercurial, so I don't really know the best way to structure my repositories for a project like this, with a lot of interconnected components. The in-house libraries are fairly distinct, so I would say that each one of them should have its own repository. However, some of them use functionality provided by others. How should these dependencies be managed? The project plug-ins should be distinct from eachother, so I'd imagine that each would have its own repository. How should the dependencies on the in-house/third-party libraries and the rest of the project (Project.DataModel and Project.Core) be managed, with regards to the solution layout and the repository layout? So basically, for a project like this, what are the best way of structuring: (a) my visual studio solutions (b) my source control repository/repositories

  • Why do I have to run aptitude update twice to install Ruby?

    - by Willie Wheeler
Summary. I have a fresh EC2 Precise 64-bit instance (ami-82fa58eb). After launching the instance, I want to install ruby1.9.1 (among others). This doesn't work: aptitude update && apt-get -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confnew" --force-yes -fuy dist-upgrade && aptitude install -y ruby1.9.1 ruby1.9.1-dev make as Aptitude can't find the Ruby package. But this works: aptitude update && aptitude update && apt-get -o Dpkg::Options::="--force-confnew" --force-yes -fuy dist-upgrade && aptitude install -y ruby1.9.1 ruby1.9.1-dev make I would like to understand why I need to run aptitude update twice. • apache2 server running ruby on rails application has go daddy cert that works in chrome/firefox and ie 9 but not ie 8

    - by ryan
I have a rails application up on a linode ubuntu 11 server, running apache2. I have a cert purchased from godaddy, (where we also bought our domain) and the cert is installed on my server. Part of my virtual host file: ServerName my_site.com ServerAlias www.my_site.com SSLEngine On SSLCertificateFile /path/my_site.com.crt SSLCertificateKeyFile /path/my_site.com.key SSLCertificateChainFile /path/gd_bundle.crt The cert works fine in Chrome, FireFox and IE 9+ but in IE 8- I get this error: There is a problem with this website's security certificate. The security certificate presented by this website was issued for a different website's address. I'm hosting multiple rails apps on this same server (4 right now plus some old php sites that don't need ssl). I have tried googling every possible combination of the error/situation that I could think of but at this point I'm shooting in the dark. The closest I could come up with is that some versions if IE don't support SNI. But that doesn't apply here because I am getting the warning on windows 7 machines running IE 8, and the SNI only seemed to apply to IE 8 if the operating system was windows XP. So why is this cert being accepted by all browsers but giving me a warning in IE 8? Edit: So doing a little more digging and I figured out some more. It turns out this is effecting IE 9 as well. However the problem seems to be that IE is not traversing the ssl chain to get to the right cert. FireFox and Chrome when I go to view certificate show the correct one, but IE is showing one of our other sites certificates. REAL QUESTION HERE: That being the case why is IE not getting the right certificate when others are and how do I fix it?

  • Are there equivalents to Ruby's method_missing in other languages?

    - by Justin Ethier
In Ruby, objects have a handy method called method_missing which allows one to handle method calls for methods that have not even been (explicitly) defined: Invoked by Ruby when obj is sent a message it cannot handle. symbol is the symbol for the method called, and args are any arguments that were passed to it. By default, the interpreter raises an error when this method is called. However, it is possible to override the method to provide more dynamic behavior. The example below creates a class Roman, which responds to methods with names consisting of roman numerals, returning the corresponding integer values. class Roman def romanToInt(str) # ... end def method_missing(methId) str = methId.id2name romanToInt(str) end end r = Roman.new r.iv #=> 4 r.xxiii #=> 23 r.mm #=> 2000 For example, Ruby on Rails uses this to allow calls to methods such as find_by_my_column_name. My question is, what other languages support an equivalent to method_missing, and how do you implement the equivalent in your code?

  • Apache2 cgi's crash on odbc db access (but run fine from shell)

    - by Martin
Problem overview (details below): I'm having an apache2 + ruby integration problem when trying to connect to an ODBC data source. The main problem boils down to the fact that scripts that run fine from an interactive shell crash ruby on the database connect line when run as a cgi from apache2. Ruby cgi's that don't try to access the ODBC datasource work fine. And (again) ruby scripts that connect to a database with ODBC do fine when executed from the command line (or cron). This behavior is identical when I use perl instead of ruby. So, the issue seems to be with the environment provided for ruby (perl) by apache2, but I can't figure out what is wrong or what to do about it. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to get these cgi scripts to work properly? I've tried many different things to get this to work, and I'm happy to provide more detail of any aspect if that will help. Details: Mac OS X Server 10.5.8 Xserve 2 x 2.66 Dual-Core Intel Xeon (12 GB) Apache 2.2.13 ruby 1.8.6 (2008-08-11 patchlevel 287) [universal-darwin9.0] ruby-odbc 0.9997 dbd-odbc (0.2.5) dbi (0.4.3) mod_ruby 1.3.0 Perl -- 5.8.8 DBI -- 1.609 DBD::ODBC -- 1.23 odbc driver: DataDirect SequeLink v5.5 (/Library/ODBC/SequeLink.bundle/Contents/MacOS/ivslk20.dylib) odbc datasource: FileMaker Server 10 (v10.0.2.206) ) a minimal version of a script (anonymized) that will crash in apache but run successfully from a shell: #!/usr/bin/ruby require 'cgi' require 'odbc' cgi = CGI.new("html3") aConnection = ODBC::connect('DBFile', "username", 'password') aQuery = aConnection.prepare("SELECT zzz_kP_ID FROM DBTable WHERE zzz_kP_ID = 81044") aQuery.execute aRecord = aQuery.fetch_hash.inspect aQuery.drop aConnection.disconnect # aRecord = '{"zzz_kP_ID"=>81044.0}' cgi.out{ cgi.html{ cgi.body{ "<pre>Primary Key: #{aRecord}</pre>" } } } Example of running this from a shell: gamma% ./minimal.rb (offline mode: enter name=value pairs on standard input) Content-Type: text/html Content-Length: 134 <!DOCTYPE HTML PUBLIC "-//W3C//DTD HTML 3.2 Final//EN"><HTML><BODY><pre>Primary Key: {"zzz_kP_ID"=>81044.0}</pre></font></BODY></HTML>% gamma% ) typical crash log lines: Dec 22 14:02:38 gamma ReportCrash[79237]: Formulating crash report for process perl[79236] Dec 22 14:02:38 gamma ReportCrash[79237]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/perl_2009-12-22-140237_HTCF.crash using uid: 0 gid: 0, euid: 0 egid: 0 Dec 22 14:03:13 gamma ReportCrash[79256]: Formulating crash report for process perl[79253] Dec 22 14:03:13 gamma ReportCrash[79256]: Saved crashreport to /Library/Logs/CrashReporter/perl_2009-12-22-140311_HTCF.crash using uid: 0 gid: 0, euid: 0 egid: 0

  • MEF + Plug-In not updating

    - by mybrokengnome
I asked this on the MEF Codeplex forum already, but I haven't gotten a response yet, so I figured I'd try StackOverflow. Here's the original post if anyone's interested (this is just a copy from it): MEF Codeplex "Let me first say that I'm completely new to MEF (just discovered it today) and am very happy with it so far. However, I've ran in to a problem that is very frustrating. I'm creating an app that will have a plugin architecture and the plugins will only be stored in a single DLL file (or coded into the main app). The DLL file needs to be able to be recompiled during run-time and the app should recognize this and re-load the plugins (I know this is difficult, but it's a requirement). To accomplish this I took the approach covered http://blog.maartenballiauw.be/category/MEF.aspx there (look for WebServerDirectoryCatalog). Basically the idea is to "monitor the plugins folder, copy the new/modified assemblies to the web application’s /bin folder and instruct MEF to load its exports from there." This is my code, which is probably not the correct way to do it but it's what I found in some samples around the net: main()... string myExecName = Assembly.GetExecutingAssembly().Location; string myPath = System.IO.Path.GetDirectoryName(myExecName); catalog = new AggregateCatalog(); pluginCatalog = new MyDirectoryCatalog(myPath + @"/Plugins"); catalog.Catalogs.Add(pluginCatalog); exportContainer = new CompositionContainer(catalog); CompositionBatch compBatch = new CompositionBatch(); compBatch.AddPart(this); compBatch.AddPart(catalog); exportContainer.Compose(compBatch); and private FileSystemWatcher fileSystemWatcher; public DirectoryCatalog directoryCatalog; private string path; private string extension; public MyDirectoryCatalog(string path) { Initialize(path, "*.dll", "*.dll"); } private void Initialize(string path, string extension, string modulePattern) { this.path = path; this.extension = extension; fileSystemWatcher = new FileSystemWatcher(path, modulePattern); fileSystemWatcher.Changed += new FileSystemEventHandler(fileSystemWatcher_Changed); fileSystemWatcher.Created += new FileSystemEventHandler(fileSystemWatcher_Created); fileSystemWatcher.Deleted += new FileSystemEventHandler(fileSystemWatcher_Deleted); fileSystemWatcher.Renamed += new RenamedEventHandler(fileSystemWatcher_Renamed); fileSystemWatcher.IncludeSubdirectories = false; fileSystemWatcher.EnableRaisingEvents = true; Refresh(); } void fileSystemWatcher_Renamed(object sender, RenamedEventArgs e) { RemoveFromBin(e.OldName); Refresh(); } void fileSystemWatcher_Deleted(object sender, FileSystemEventArgs e) { RemoveFromBin(e.Name); Refresh(); } void fileSystemWatcher_Created(object sender, FileSystemEventArgs e) { Refresh(); } void fileSystemWatcher_Changed(object sender, FileSystemEventArgs e) { Refresh(); } private void Refresh() { // Determine /bin path string binPath = Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, "Plugins"); string newPath = ""; // Copy files to /bin foreach (string file in Directory.GetFiles(path, extension, SearchOption.TopDirectoryOnly)) { try { DirectoryInfo dInfo = new DirectoryInfo(binPath); DirectoryInfo[] dirs = dInfo.GetDirectories(); int count = dirs.Count() + 1; newPath = binPath + "/" + count; DirectoryInfo dInfo2 = new DirectoryInfo(newPath); if (!dInfo2.Exists) dInfo2.Create(); File.Copy(file, System.IO.Path.Combine(newPath, System.IO.Path.GetFileName(file)), true); } catch { // Not that big deal... Blog readers will probably kill me for this bit of code :-) } } // Create new directory catalog directoryCatalog = new DirectoryCatalog(newPath, extension); directoryCatalog.Refresh(); } public override IQueryable<ComposablePartDefinition> Parts { get { return directoryCatalog.Parts; } } private void RemoveFromBin(string name) { string binPath = Path.Combine(AppDomain.CurrentDomain.BaseDirectory, ""); File.Delete(Path.Combine(binPath, name)); } So all this actually works, and after the end of the code in main my IEnumerable variable is actually filled with all the plugins in the DLL (which if you follow the code is located in Plugins/1 so that I can modify the dll in the plugins folder). So now at this point I should be able to re-compile the plugins DLL, drop it in to the Plugins folder, my FileWatcher detect that it's changed, and then copy it into folder "2" and directoryCatalog should point to the new folder. All this actually works! The problem is, even though it seems like every thing is pointed to the right place, my IEnumerable variable is never updated with the new plugins. So close, but yet so far! Any suggestions? I know the downsides of doing it this way, that no dll is actually getting unloaded and causing a memory leak, but it's a Windows App and will probably be started at least once a day, and the plugins are un-likely to change that often, but it's still a requirement from the client that it does this without re-loading the app. Thanks! Thanks for any help you all can provide, it's driving me crazy not being able to figure this out."

  • Edd strikes again &ndash; IronRuby for Rubyists on InfoQ

    - by Eric Nelson
Colleague, friend and generally top guy on IronRuby Edd Morgan has just been published over on InfoQ. To wet the appetite… a snippet or three. IronRuby for Rubyists IronRuby is Microsoft's implementation of the Ruby language we all know and love with the added bonus of interoperability with the .NET framework — the Iron in the name is actually an acronym for 'Implementation running on .NET'. It's supported by the .NET Common Language Runtime as well as, albeit unofficially, the Mono project. You'd be forgiven for harbouring some question in your mind about running a dynamic language such as Ruby atop the CLR - that's where the DLR (Dynamic Language Runtime) comes in. The DLR is Microsoft's way of providing dynamic language capability on top of the CLR. Both IronRuby and the DLR are, as part of Microsoft's commitment to open source software, available as part of the Microsoft Public License on GitHub and CodePlex respectively… And Metaprogramming with IronRuby The art and science of metaprogramming — especially in Ruby, where it's an absolute joy — is something that could very easily span an entire article. As you would hope, IronRuby code is fully able to manipulate itself allowing you to bend your classes to your whim just as you would expect with a good dynamic language… And Riding the irails? So let's get to the point. I think it's a solid bet to make that a large proportion of Ruby programmers are familiar with the Rails framework - perhaps it's even safe to assume that most were first led to the Ruby language by the siren song of the Rails framework itself. Long story short, IronRuby is compatible enough to run your Rails app… Now… get yourself over to the full article and also check out some of Edds other work below. • Nested Model binding in ASP.NET MVC2. fields_for from rails equivalent

    - by dagda1
Hi, I am looking for some examples of how to do model binding in ASP.NET MVC2 for COMPLEX objects. All the exmples I can find are of simple objects with no child collections or child objects. If I have an Expense object with a child ExpensePayment object. In rails, child objects are rendered with the HTML name attributes like this: expense[expense_payment][net] Rails uses fields_for to render child objects. How can I accomplish something similar in ASP.NET MVC2? Cheers Paul

  • Mini Book Review of IronRuby Unleashed by Shay Friedman

    - by Eric Nelson
When I get some time (and hell starts to look a little chilly) I would love to do a more detailed review. But I wanted to get something “out there” as I really like this book and reviews of it seem a little thin on the ground. In brief: Is it a good book? Yes Would I recommend this book to a .NET developer who was new to Ruby? Yes (This is me by the way) Would I recommend this book to a Ruby developer who was new to .NET ? Yes Would I recommend this book to a developer who sometimes does Ruby and sometimes does .NET? Yes Would I recommend this book to a developer new to .NET and new to Ruby? Yes The above demonstrates how well balanced this book is (IMHO). What I like about it: Its assumes pretty much no knowledge of IronRuby or .NET. All it asks is that you are a developer interested in IronRuby. Yet it manages to cover off the topics in a good degree of detail. If you are a Ruby developer you skip Part 2, if you are a .NET developer you skip some of Part 1 and whizz through the short intros to the individual technologies such as WPF. It is definitely not a “lets makes the manual look pretty” book – this is original content thoughtfully written and presented. It is pretty comprehensive – in 500 pages it packs in  Intro to IronRuby Intro to .NET Intro to Ruby Using IronRuby with Windows Forms, ASP.NET, WPF, Silverlight etc Getting Rails working with IronRuby Unit testing with IronRuby – which I think is an excellent way for a .NET developer to start using IronRuby Embedding IronRuby in a .NET app  - another interesting “first step” for a .NET developer What I didn’t like: Err… nothing yet. Ok, If I am being picky then the start of chapter 2 irked me a little as it went through the history of .NET. “The first version [of the .NET Framework] wasn’t that great”.  Felt pretty good to me compared to Java and C++ development at the time :-) Buy on Amazon UK | Buy on Amazon USA Related Links: Posts from the author Shay Friedman on IronRuby Guest Post: What's IronRuby, and how do I put it on Rails? • Microsoft Templates included in jQuery 1.5!

    - by Stephen Walther
When I joined the ASP.NET team as the Program Manager for Ajax, the ASP.NET team was working on releasing a new version of the Microsoft Ajax Library. This new version of the Microsoft Ajax Library had several really innovative and unique features such as support for client templates, client data-binding, script dependency management, and globalization. However, we kept hearing the message that our customers wanted to use jQuery when building ASP.NET applications. Therefore, about ten months ago, we decided to pursue a risky strategy. Scott Guthrie sent me to Cambridge to meet with John Resig – the creator of jQuery and leader of the jQuery project – to find out whether Microsoft and jQuery could work together. We wanted to find out whether the jQuery project would be open to allowing Microsoft to contribute the innovative features that we were developing for the Microsoft Ajax Library -- such as client templates and client data-binding -- to the jQuery library. Fortunately, the Cambridge meeting with Resig went well. John Resig was very open to accepting contributions to the jQuery library. Over the next few months, we worked out a process for Microsoft to contribute new features to the open-source jQuery project. Resig and Guthrie appeared on stage at the MIX10 conference to announce that Microsoft would be contributing features to jQuery. It has been a long journey, but I am happy to report success. Today, Microsoft and the jQuery project have announced that three plugins developed by developers on the ASP.NET team – the jQuery Templates, jQuery Data Link, and jQuery Globalization plugins – have been accepted as official jQuery plugins. In addition, the jQuery Templates plugin will be integrated into jQuery 1.5 which is the next major release of jQuery. You can learn more about the plugins by watching the following Web Camps TV episode hosted by James Senior with Stephen Walther: Web Camps TV #5 - Microsoft Commits Code to jQuery! You can read Scott Guthrie’s blog announcement here: http://weblogs.asp.net/scottgu/archive/2010/10/04/jquery-templates-data-link-and-globalization-accepted-as-official-jquery-plugins.aspx You can read the jQuery team’s announcement here: http://blog.jquery.com/2010/10/04/new-official-jquery-plugins-provide-templating-data-linking-and-globalization/ I wrote the original proposal for the jQuery Templates plugin. Dave Reed and Boris Moore were the ASP.NET developers responsible for actually writing the plugin (with lots of input from the jQuery team and the jQuery community). Boris has written a great set of tutorials on the Templates plugin. The first tutorial in his series is located here: http://www.borismoore.com/2010/09/introducing-jquery-templates-1-first.html I want to thank John Resig, Richard Worth, Scott Gonzalez, Rey Bango, Jorn Zaefferer, Karl Swedberg and all of the other members of the jQuery team for working with the ASP.NET team and accepting our contributions to the jQuery project.

  • UppercuT &ndash; Custom Extensions Now With PowerShell and Ruby

Arguably, one of the most powerful features of UppercuT (UC) is the ability to extend any step of the build process with a pre, post, or replace hook. This customization is done in a separate location from the build so you can upgrade without wondering if you broke the build. There is a hook before each step of the build has run. There is a hook after. And back to power again, there is a replacement hook. If you dont like what the step is doing and/or you want to replace its entire functionality,...Did you know that DotNetSlackers also publishes .net articles written by top known .net Authors? • How To Disable Individual Plug-ins in Google Chrome

    - by The Geek
Have you ever wondered how to disable useless or insecure browser plug-ins in Google Chrome? Here’s the lowdown on how to get rid of Java, Acrobat, Silverlight, and the rest of the plugins you probably want to get rid of. Disabling Plugins in Google Chrome If you head to about:plugins in your address bar, you’ll probably see a list of plugins, but won’t be able to disable them yet. What you’ll need to do is switch over to the Dev channel of Chrome, which gives you access to all the latest features—though you might be warned that sometimes the dev channel might be less stable than the release or beta channels. Ready to proceed? Head to the Dev Channel page, and then click the link to run the installer. You’ll be prompted to restart Chrome when you’re done. Note that Mac and Windows users can both run an installer to switch. Linux users will have to install a package. Note: Once you’ve switched to the Dev channel, you can’t really switch to the stable channel. You’ll have to uninstall Chrome and then reinstall the regular version. Now that you’ve switched to the dev channel and restarted your browser, head to about:plugins in the address bar, and then just disable each plugin you really don’t need. Plugins you can generally live without?  Java, Acrobat, Microsoft Office, Windows Presentation Foundation, Silverlight. These will be on a case-by-case basis, of course, but the vast majority of large websites don’t require any of those. When it comes right down to it, the only plugin that most people require is Flash… and leave the “Default Plug-in” alone too. Special thanks to @jordanconway for pointing out the solution. • Update Your NetBeans Plugin's "Supported NetBeans Versions" In The Next Two Weeks!

    - by Geertjan
For each NetBeans plugin uploaded to the NetBeans Plugin Portal, the registration page starts like this: Note how the "Supported NetBeans Versions" field is empty, i.e., no checkbox is checked, for the plugin above. As you can also see, there is a red asterisk next to this field, which means it is mandatory. It is mandatory for the latest version of the NetBeans Plugin Portal, while it wasn't mandatory before, so that several plugins were registered without their supported version being set. Therefore, since the version is now mandatory, anyone who doesn't want their plugin to be hidden for the rest of this year, and removed on 1 January 2013 if no one complains about their absence, needs to go to their plugin's registration page and set a NetBeans Version. E-mails have been sent to plugin developers of unversioned plugins already, over the last weeks. Currently there are 91 plugins that still need to have their NetBeans Version set. Probably at least 1/3 of those are my own plugins, so this is as much a reminder to myself as anyone else! Whether or not you have received an e-mail asking you to set a NetBeans Version for your plugins, please take a quick look anyway and maybe this is a good opportunity to update other information relating to your plugin. You (and I) have two weeks: on Monday 16 April, any NetBeans plugin in the Plugin Portal without a NetBeans Version will be hidden. And then removed, at the start of next year, if no one complains.
