• What is a good rule for when to prepend members with 'this' (C#)?

  If I am accessing a member field, property, or method, I'm never sure when I should prepend it with 'this'. I am not asking about cases where it is required, like in the case where a local variable has the same name. I am talking about cases where the meaning is exactly the same. Which is more readable? Are there any standards, best practices, or rules of thumb I should be following? Should it just be consistent throughout a class, or an entire code base?

  This is not a technical question, but rather a social and methodical one. I am a computer sciences student and I usually have really tough programming assignments. I don`t know if it is only happening to me but sometimes, particularly when deadline is approaching, i find myself in a harsh situation. I cannot find my mistake in the code or come up with a another great idea. Then boredom comes in and the problem begins to seem unsolvable. I know there are more-than-great professional coders here.   Recently I've bumped into the following C++ code: if (a) { f(); } else if (b) { f(); } else if (c) { f(); } Where a, b and c are all different conditions, and they are not very short. I tried to change the code to: if (a || b || c) { f(); } But the author opposed saying that my change will decrease readability of the code. I had two arguments: 1) You should not increase readability by replacing one branching statement with three (though I really doubt that it's possible to make code more readable by using else if instead of ||). 2) It's not the fastest code, and no compiler will optimize this. But my arguments did not convince him. What would you tell a programmer writing such a code? Do you think complex condition is an excuse for using else if instead of OR?

• How do I overflow text to the left in a table?

  I have a table with fixed layout. On overflow, the contents of cells should clip from the left instead of the right. That is, if the width of the TD is less than the width of the text, the cell below should display "67890" instead of "12345". This needs to work in IE7+ at minimum. • Creating a row of Three Boxes Seperated

  I am new to css and I have a menu bar that I am working on however I am having a problem with one of the menu ("LINKS") items. If you roll over the Links menu item your notice I have three boxes there that I am trying to separate into there own area. Right now they are over lapping each other. Could you please tell me what I am doing wrong? I have tried margin-left and padding-left and I find that they either move the box further to the right or widen the box more. • How to reset persistent scrollbar position after div refresh in FF3?

  Hi, I'm experiencing a weird scrollbar issue. I'm building a page that uses jQuery and PHP to dynamically load images into a DIV sequentially. This DIV is a fixed height but uses a scrollbar for its variable width. The problem is that the scrollbar does not reset after a dynamic refresh of the DIV. So when the user scrolls and then refreshes with new content, the scroll bar position stays persistent instead of resetting back to the left. This seems to only happen in FF3. The scrollbar resets perfectly fine in Chrome, Safari, and IE8. For each refresh, the DIV is hidden, emptied, sized with CSS, then sequentially appended with images. I've tried resetting white-space: normal before the nowrap, playing around with overflow, and also jQuery's scrollLeft to no avail. It still behaves strangely in FF3, and only FF3. http://www.shadowshapes.com/uttdev/ Click a thumbnail, move the scrollbar then click another thumb. Thanks for any help!

• Having two backgrounds for an active menu item?

  Hi I have a dynamic menu where the ul li items change in width depending on the text set in the CMS (Joomla). They want the menu item, on mouse over, to both have 1. a repeated background image and 2. an image placed at the top (http://screencast.com/t/Zjk4YTJmNGQ). Now, I'm great with doing the repeated background image on a mouse over and that would be great, but I am not sure how to get both of these images in one css declaration. Any help would be greatly appreciated, as I haven't learned this technique yet :(

• Layout with divs... can you have too many?

  What is the best practice for developing a layout? Is better to limit divs? I was looking through the html/css of some popular sites and they all seem to have divs within divs. For instance, a div for the entire page, a div for the topbar, a div within the top bar for the logo, search bar, etc. Is this a good practice? I suppose it's easier to position all the divs correctly and than place the necessary elements within the divs. It's what I've been doing this far but want to make sure I'm learning the correct approach. • Make graphics on left and right side of text change width depending on the amount of text?

  I need to have an H1 tag centered between two graphics on the left and right of the text. The H1 text will be various widths depending on what page you are on. The dot on the left should stay on the left edge of the site and the line should extend until it reaches the edge of the text. Same for the right side. Is there a way to accomplish this by using CSS or even some jquery/javascript? In the attached graphic, if the text was just "WHO YOU ARE" I'd need the bars on the left and right to grow wider to bump up against the edges of the text.

• Variable pre-fixes, Visual Studio 2010 onwards?

  I'm a bit bewildered on this subject, as I relate variable prefixes to being a thing of the past now, but with Visual Studio 2010 onwards (I'm currently using 2012), do people still do this and why? I only ask because, these days, you can hover over any variable and it'll tell you the variable type and scope. There's literally no requirement for pre-fixing being there for readability. By this I mean: string strHello int intHello etc. And I'm being language/tool biased here - as Visual Studio takes a lot of the legwork out for you in terms of seeing exactly what type the variable is, including after conversions in the code. This is not a "general programming" question.

• Rounded corners, is this Mozilla specific?

  I was looking at how some site implemented rounded corners, and the CSS had these odd tags that I've never really seen before. -moz-border-radius-topright: 5px; -webkit-border-top-right-radius: 5px; -moz-border-radius-bottomright: 5px; -webkit-border-bottom-right-radius: 5px; I googled it, and they seem to be Firefox specific tags? Update The site I was looking at was twitter, it's wierd how a site like that would alienate their IE users.
