• Should I still be using jquery .getJson in 1.4.2?

  Hi I was looking at the 14 days of jquery http://jquery14.com/day-01/jquery-14 and I saw this and it got me to wondering is there a point to use getJson anymore? JSON and script types auto-detected by content-type (jQuery.ajax Documentation, Commit 1, Commit 2) If the response to an Ajax request is returned with a JSON mime type (application/json), the dataType defaults to “json” (if no dataType is specified). Additionally, if the response to an Ajax request is returned with a JavaScript mime type (text/javascript or application/x-javascript) , the dataType defaults to “script” (if no dataType is specified), causing the script to automatically execute. First I can see such a huge benefit of this. In jquery 1.3 I came to a situation where in some cases I would return a partial view and some cases I would return a json result (asp.net mvc). It worked in firefox but in no other browser and one of the problems was I basically had to tell jquery to either do json or text/html. With it automatically detecting I could get away with this. Anyways I found a solution around this at that time. So now it just makes me wonder if there is any point to using GetJson. I am also unsure how to set these JavaScript mime types? I am assuming that if you return a JsonResult from asp.net mvc it will set it. but I am not sure if I was just sending a text result if it would be set( I am not sure if ContentResult would set this).

• Event Dispatching, void pointer and alternatives

  i have my event dispatching / handling functionality working fine, but there is one issue that i need to resolve. Long story short, here are the details. // The event structure struct tEventMessage { // Type of the event int Type; // (void*) Allows those to be casted into per-Type objects void *pArgument1; void *pArgument2; }; I am sending events from different modules in my engine by using the above structure, which requires a pointer to an argument. All messages are queued, and then dispatched on the next ::Tick(). It works fine, untill i try to send something that doesn't exist in next ::Tick, for example: When a mouse click is being handled, it calculates the click coordinates in world space. Some requirements constraints: Should work on both linux/unix and win32 systems Be able to execute free function and class methods Hopefully written in modern C++ not 90's/java-esque C++ Be able to function over networks and hetrogenous architectures Not too slow or inefficient Hopefully provide interfaces for TR1 style std::function's et al. • redirect web app results to own application

  Is it possible to redirect a web apps results to a second application? I cannot parse the html source. It contains the javascript functions that execute the queries but all the content is probably server side. I hope this makes sense. The owner has made the script available but I am not sure how this helps. Can I using .net call the site and redirect results perhaps to a file or database? the app accesses one of googles apis and performs searches/queries and returns results which are displayed on the site. Now all the javascript functions that perform these queries are listed in the source but I do not know javascript so it does not make much sense to me. I have used the documentation which uses the oauth protocol to access the api and have implemented that in my web app but it took me nearly a week to get the request token right and now to send requests to the api, sometimes I get one result back and sometimes none. It is frustrating me and the owner of the web app has given use of his script but he says all that happens is that my browser interacts with the google api and not his server. So I thought why not have my web app call his, since his interacts with the API flawlessly and have the results sent to my app to save in a database. I have very little experience here so pardon my ignorance

• Cannot override the CSS at this site

  This site is overriding my CSS with its own and I cannot get around it! It has style.css with "text-align: center" in the body. I have <div id="mydiv"> appended to the body and it's normally got "text-align: left". There are <ul>s and <li>s underneath #mydiv and they are inheriting the body's 'center' for some reason. • android listview order changed when called notifyDataSetChanged

  hi,all. when I use notifyDataSetChanged(), the listview display order will be change . like this 3 2 1 when current activy was created. but when I change the data. it will be 1 2 3 I don't want the order changed and i dont understand why its happening. • My java program seems to be skipping over the try{}, executing the catch{} and then throwing a NullPointerException. What should I do?

  I am writing a program that calculates the number of words, syllables, and sentences in any given text file. I don't need help finding those numbers, however my program (which currently should only find the number of words in the text file) will not import the text file even when I type in the name of the file correctly. The text file is in the same folder as the source code. Instead it tells me every time that what I typed in has the wrong file extension (see my catch{}) and then proceeds to throw a null pointer. I am at a loss for what could be causing it. • Need help implementing this algorithm with map reduce(hadoop)

  Hi all! i have algorithm that will go through a large data set read some text files and search for specific terms in those lines. I have it implemented in Java, but I didnt want to post code so that it doesnt look i am searching for someone to implement it for me, but it is true i really need a lot of help!!! This was not planned for my project, but data set turned out to be huge, so teacher told me I have to do it like this. I was reading about MapReduce and thaught that i first do the standard implementation and then it will be more/less easier to do it with mapreduce. But didnt happen, since algorithm is quite stupid and nothing special, and map reduce...i cant wrap my mind around it. So here is shortly pseudo code of my algorithm LIST termList (there is method that creates this list from lucene index) FOLDER topFolder INPUT topFolder IF it is folder and not empty list files (there are 30 sub folders inside) FOR EACH sub folder GET file "CheckedFile.txt" analyze(CheckedFile) ENDFOR END IF Method ANALYZE(CheckedFile) read CheckedFile WHILE CheckedFile has next line GET line FOR(loops through termList) GET third word from line IF third word = term from list append whole line to string buffer ENDIF ENDFOR END WHILE OUTPUT string buffer to file Also, as you can see, each time when "analyze" is called, new file has to be created, i understood that map reduce is difficult to write to many outputs??? I understand mapreduce intuition, and my example seems perfectly suited for mapreduce, but when it comes to do this, obviously I do not know enough and i am STUCK! Please please help.

• How can I record and save flash video's with an H264 codec

  Right now I am working on an AIR 3.2 application which lets you stream a video to a Flash Media Server and saves it on a hard drive. This sequence works fine with the standard Sorenson codec but I want to use H.264 for my videos. I found lots example c ode and implemented it in my code, but when I record a video of myself I am unable to re-watch it afterwards. I found how to implement a H.264 encoding in a realeyes blog post here. My code is here. It saves the video as a .f4v file, but my browser (I've tried the latest versions of both Chrome and Firefox, with the latest Flash) and also VLC are unable to load the video. I also used a program called Movie Player which is able to open the file but can only show the first frame and the audio. Neither am I able to upload the video to YouTube because they do not support the file extension. Here is an example video file it saved: H264Test1.f4v. My question is: How do I stream and save the movie with a file extension that I am able to re-watch while using the H.264 codec?

• Calculating distance between two X,Y coordinates

  I am writing a tool for a game that involves calculating the distance between two coordinates on a spherical plane 500 units across. That is, [0,0] through [499,499] are valid coordinates, and [0,0] and [499,499] are also right next to each other. Currently, in my application, I am comparing the distance between a city with an [X,Y] location respective to the user's own [X,Y] location, which they have configured in advance. To do this, I found this algorithm, which kind of works: Math.sqrt ( dx * dx + dy * dy ); Because sorting a paged list by distance is a useful thing to be able to do, I implemented this algorithm in a MySQL query and have made it available to my application using the following part of my SELECT statement: SQRT( POW( ( ".strval($sourceX)." - cityX ) , 2 ) + POW( ( ".strval($sourceY)." - cityY ) , 2 ) ) AS distance This works fine for many calculations, but does not take into account the fact that [0,0] and [499,499] are kitty-corner to one another. Is there any way I can tweak this algorithm to generate an accurate distance, given that 0 and 499 are adjacent? Thanks, -Umo

• Qt: How to use QTimer to print a message to a QTextBrowser every 10 seconds?

  Hello, I have working at this for hours and cannot figure it out nor can I find any help online that works. Basically the gist of what I am trying to accomplish is to have a Qt GUI with a button and a QTextBrowser. When I push the button I want it to diplay a message and then keep printing this message every 10 seconds. I figured I would use QTimer because it makes sense to have a timer to diplay the message every 10 seconds. When I originally implemented this into my buttonClicked() SLOT it caused the program to freeze. I looked online for a solution and found QApplication::processEvents(). So basically in my function I had something like this: while(1) { QTimer *timer; connect(...) //omitted parameters for this example timer.start(10000); ui->diplay->append("Message"); while(timer.isActive()) { QApplication::processEvents() } } I figured it would break out of the timer.isActive() while loop but it won't it simply stays in there. So I figured this is a threading issue. So I figured out how to use QThreads but I still can't get it to work. Basically when I create a thread with a timer on it and the thread tells the timer to start, the program closes and the console says "The program has unexpectedly finished". There has to be an easy way to do this but my track record with Qt has always been that th

  I'd like something like this: ForEach[i_, {1,2,3}, Print[i] ] Or, more generally, to destructure arbitrary stuff in the list you're looping over, like: ForEach[{i_, j_}, {{1,10}, {2,20}, {3,30}}, Print[i*j] ] (Meta-question: is that a good way to call a ForEach loop, with the first argument a pattern like that?) ADDED: Some answerers have rightly pointed out that usually you want to use Map or other purely functional constructs and eschew a non-functional programming style where you use side effects. I agree! But here's an example where I think this ForEach construct is supremely useful: Say I have a list of options (rules) that pair symbols with expressions, like attrVals = {a -> 7, b -> 8, c -> 9} Now I want to make a hash table where I do the obvious mapping of those symbols to those numbers. I don't think there's a cleaner way to do that than ForEach[a_ -> v_, attrVals, h[a] = v] ADDED: I just realized that to do ForEach properly, it should support Break[] and Continue[]. I'm not sure how to implement that. Perhaps it will need to somehow be implemented in terms of For, While, or Do since those are the only loop constructs that support Break[] and Continue[].   Hi, I implemented the gamekit. All works fine now. But if the user presses on send the data will instantly send to the other iphone/ipod/ipad and it will instantly written. So now i wanted to implemenr a confirm screen for the receiver. In my receiveData method (from the gamekit) i have an array. • Indexing table with duplicates MySQL/SQL Server with millions of records

  I need help in indexing in MySQL. I have a table in MySQL with following rows: ID Store_ID Feature_ID Order_ID Viewed_Date Deal_ID IsTrial The ID is auto generated. Store_ID goes from 1 - 8. Feature_ID from 1 - let's say 100. Viewed Date is Date and time on which the data is inserted. IsTrial is either 0 or 1. You can ignore Order_ID and Deal_ID from this discussion. There are millions of data in the table and we have a reporting backend that needs to view the number of views in a certain period or overall where trial is 0 for a particular store id and for a particular feature. The query takes the form of: select count(viewed_date) from theTable where viewed_date between '2009-12-01' and '2010-12-31' and store_id = '2' and feature_id = '12' and Istrial = 0 In SQL Server you can have a filtered index to use for Istrial. Is there anything similar to this in MySQL? Also, Store_ID and Feature_ID have a lot of duplicate data. I created an index using Store_ID and Feature_ID. Although this seems to have decreased the search period, I need better improvement than this. Right now I have more than 4 million rows. To search for a particular query like the one above, it looks at 3.5 million rows in order to give me the count of 500k rows. PS. I forgot to add view_date filter in the query. Now I have done this.

• Implementing IEnumeralbe on Non-Listed Items

  I have a class that contains a static number of objects. This class needs to be frequently 'compared' to other classes that will be simple List objects. public partial class Sheet { public Item X{ get; set; } public Item Y{ get; set; } public Item Z{ get; set; } } the items are obviously not going to be "X" "Y" "Z", those are just generic names for example. The problem is that due to the nature of what needs to be done, a List won't work; even though everything in here is going to be of type Item. It is like a checklist of very specific things that has to be tested against in both code and runtime. This works all fine and well; it isn't my issue. My issue is iterating it. For instance I want to do the following... List<Item> UncheckedItems = // Repository Logic Here. UncheckedItems contains all available items; and the CheckedItems is the Sheet class instance. CheckedItems will contain items that were moved from Unchecked to Checked; however due to the nature of the storage system, items moved to Checked CANNOT be REMOVED from Unchecked. I simply want to iterate through "Checked" and remove anything from the list in Unchecked that is already in "Checked". So naturally, that would go like this with a normal list. foreach(Item item in Unchecked) { if( Checked.Contains(item) ) Unchecked.Remove( item ); } But since "Sheet" is not a 'List', I cannot do that. So I wanted to implement IEnumerable so that I could. Any suggestions? I've never implemented IEnumerable directly before and I'm pretty confused as to where to begin.

• C++ and its type system: How to deal with data with multiple types?

  "Introduction" I'm relatively new to C++. I went through all the basic stuff and managed to build 2-3 simple interpreters for my programming languages. The first thing that gave and still gives me a headache: Implementing the type system of my language in C++ Think of that: Ruby, Python, PHP and Co. have a lot of built-in types which obviously are implemented in C. So what I first tried was to make it possible to give a value in my language three possible types: Int, String and Nil. I came up with this: enum ValueType { Int, String, Nil }; class Value { public: ValueType type; int intVal; string stringVal; }; Yeah, wow, I know. It was extremely slow to pass this class around as the string allocator had to be called all the time. Next time I've tried something similar to this: enum ValueType { Int, String, Nil }; extern string stringTable[255]; class Value { public: ValueType type; int index; }; I would store all strings in stringTable and write their position to index. If the type of Value was Int, I just stored the integer in index, it wouldn't make sense at all using an int index to access another int, or? Anyways, the above gave me a headache too. After some time, accessing the string from the table here, referencing it there and copying it over there grew over my head - I lost control. I had to put the interpreter draft down. Now: Okay, so C and C++ are statically typed. How do the main implementations of the languages mentioned above handle the different types in their programs (fixnums, bignums, nums, strings, arrays, resources,...)? What should I do to get maximum speed with many different available types? How do the solutions compare to my simplified versions above?

• Setting the correct orientation for scrollbars in right-to-left pages.

  I'm working with right-to-left layouts at the moment (think Hebrew or Arabic). In RTL, the page is generally flipped horizontally. However, I can't figure out how to change the orientation of the scrollbars. I would assume that the scrollbars should appear on the left side of a scrollable element, not the right side like it does in an LTR layout. Here is an example page where the scrollbar still appears on the right: <html dir="rtl"> <body> <div style="height: 100px; overflow: auto;"> <p>This is some text</p> <p>This is some text</p> <p>This is some text</p> <p>This is some text</p> <p>This is some text</p> </body> </html> Is the orientation of a scrollbar a browser locale setting, and thus is not something I should be concerned about, or is there a way to set the orientation of the scrollbar? (I'm not interested in implementing my own JavaScript scrollbar; if it turns out this is just a limitation of browsers then I'd rather live with that than add complexity to the page.)

  I have a JPanel that I am adding JLabel's to. I then want to remove all the JLabels and add some new ones. So I do the following: panel.removeAll();panel.repaint(); panel.add(new JLabel("Add something new"); panel.revalidate(); This works fine. My problem arises when I start a new thread after this like: panel.removeAll();panel.repaint(); (1)panel.add(new JLabel("Add something new"); panel.revalidate(); //new thread to start - this thread creates new JLabels that should appear under (1) firstProducer.start(); try { firstProducer.join(); } catch (InterruptedException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } Then the output from the original JLabels is still visible. I have read that the revalidate process is a long running task and hence the firstProducer thread is getting started while the revalidation is going on and a conflict is arising. What is the best way to deal with this?

• Java giving incorrect year values

  Something very, very strange is occurring in my program, and I'm wondering if anyone out there has seen this occur before. And, if so, how to fix it. Basically, I am parsing an csv file...no problem there. One column contains a date and I am taking it in as a String and changing to a Date object. Again, no problem there. The code is as follows: SimpleDateFormat dateFormat = new SimpleDateFormat("MM/dd/yy hh:mm"); Date initialDate = new Date(); try { initialDate = dateFormat.parse(rows.get(0)[8]); System.out.println(initialDate); } catch (ParseException e) { // TODO Auto-generated catch block e.printStackTrace(); } Of course, I'm parsing other columns as well (and those are working fine). So, when I run my program for a small csv file (2.8 MB), the dates come out (i.e. are parsed) perfectly. However, when I run the program for a large csv file (25 MB), the dates are a hot mess. • SVG text - total length changes depending on zoom

  In SVG (for web-browsers), if i add a <text>-element and add some text to it the total rendered width of the text string will change depending on the scale of the text. Lets say i add "mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmA" as text, then i want to draw a vertical line(or other exactly positioned element) intersecting the very last character. Works fine but if i zoom out the text will become shorter or longer and the line will not intersect the text in the right place anymore. The error can be as much as +/- 5 characters width which is unacceptable. The error is also unpredictable, 150% and 160% zoom can add 3 characters length while 155% is 2 charlengths shorter. My zoom is implemented as a scale-transform on the root element of my canvas which is a <g>. I have tried to multiply the font-size with 1000x and scale down equally on the zoom-transform and vice versa in case it was a floating point error but the result is the same. I found the textLength-attribute[1] which is supposed to adjust the total length so the text always end where i choose but it only works in Webkit. Firefox and Opera seems to not care at all about this value (haven't tried in IE9 yet). Is there any way to render text exactly positioned without resorting to homemade filling of font-outlines?   What is the best way to achieve cross-browser(ff,ie6,chrome,opera,safari) curved corners on a div.
