Building a small server farm

Hi, I am planning to set up a Tech startup company that will provide web application solutions. Eventually we hope to diversify into different areas such as possibly social media or other services. For now we plan on running a high demand (from 1000 to 10,000 users in the first year) website running the application. This includes a MySQL database backend, email, and development servers. My question is then, what type of server arrangement will work best, that is ti say should i have a small cluster of ultra high power machines (E.G. Top of the range Xeons, with 12GB RAM) or will it be better to have more less powerful servers load balanced? Should I go for 1 - 2 u servers rack mounted ot would it be beter for it just to be tower servers for maintainability? Finally I would also like to know what kind of Internet and router i would need, I currently have 10mbit down and barely 1 mbit up, but soon our area will have a fiber optic connection with international speeds of up to 25 mbit / sec. Ubuntu 9.10 won't reboot after replacing a failed drive

Hello Serverfault community. I hope someone can shed light on a peculiar problem I am having with an Ubuntu 9.10 server install. I am not a Linux expert but have the responsibility of fixing the box if something goes wrong. DOH! I have Ubuntu 9.10 server installed on on a desktop platform: Compaq Presario SR5027CL. There are two 1TB SATA drives configured in a RAID 1 array; I use the box as an email backup server for a small group of users. Last week one of the drives failed and was replaced with a new drive of the same type. The problem I have been having is getting the box to reboot after a restart or a shutdown halt. The OS and the RAID 1 array are on the same drives that make up the RAID 1 array. The replacement drive (sda) was added to the box and the partitions were created to match the existing good drive (sdb). The array is made up of sda1 and sdb1. I found an interesting point while checking the BIOS settings: there is a "HDD Boot Group Priority" section, and the new drive was selected as the "1. 3rd master"; the server wouldn't boot configured like that, but when I set the old drive to be "1. 4th master", the box will reboot. I'm checking some more things, but I would certainly appreciate any useful information. Thanks in advance.

3 Server, is this a cluster scenario?

Hello, At the moment I have one Ubuntu server, 9.10, running with a simple Samba share, a mail server, DNS server and DHCP server. Mostly its just there for file sharing and email server. I also have 2 other servers that are exactly the same hardware and spec as the first, which have an rsync set up to retrieve the shared folders and backs them up. However, if the first server goes down, all of our shares disappear along with our mail and the system must be rebuilt. Also I tend to find if people are downloading a large amount from the file server, no-one can access there emails - especially in the morning when everyone is signing in at once. Would it be more beneficial for me to have all 3 servers, all running the same services, doing the same thing with some sort of cluster with load balancing? In short, how can I get the best out of my 3 hardware servers? I'm not really sure where to begin looking, or how to go about such a setup where 3 servers are all identical, but perhaps one acts as the main load balancer?? If someone can point me in the right direction, or if this simply sounds like one of those Enterprise Cloud's that is now a default setup in Ubuntu Server 9.10+, then I'll go down that route. Part of this app is a "Scream" button that plays random screams from cast members of a TV show. I have to bang on the app quite a while to see a memory leak in Instruments, but it's there, occasionally coming up (every 45 seconds to 2 minutes.) The leak is 3.50kb when it occurs. Haven't been able to crack it for several hours. Any help appreciated. Why is this PHP loop rendering every row twice?

I'm working on a real frankensite here not of my own design. There's a rudimentary CMS and one of the pages shows customer records from a MySQL DB. But everything looks ok to me. You'll notice that the customer name is clickable; clicking takes you to another page where you can view their full info as held in the DB - and for both rows, the customer ID is identical, and manually checking the DB shows there's no duplicate entries. The code is definitely rendering each row twice, but for what reason I have no idea. All pointers / advice appreciated.

Hello all! I have a Java / Spring MVC 3 application, using Hibernate and a MySQL database. The new Person is added, but on the line with this.projectService.updateProject(project); I get an error. MVC 3 ModelView passing parameters between view & controller

I've been playing with MVC 3 in a test project and have the following issue. I have Group & Subscriber entities and those are coupled through a SubscriberGroup table. Using the DetailView of Group I open a view of SubscriberGroup containing all subscribers. This list has the option to filter. So far it all works, however when I call the AddToGroup method on the controller it fails. Specifically it goes into the method but doesn't pass the subscriberCheckedModels list. Am I doing something wrong? Mediawiki authenication replacement showing "Login Required" instead of signing user into wiki

I'm fairly to MediaWiki and needed a way to automatically log users in after they authenticated to a central server (which creates a session and cookie for applications to use). I wrote a custom authentication extension based off of the LDAP Authentication extension and a few others. The extension simply needs to read some session data to create or update a user and then log them in automatically. All the authentication is handled externally. A user would not be able to even access the wiki website without logging in externally. This extension was placed into production which replaced the old standard MediaWiki authentication system. I also merged user accounts to prepare for the change. By default, a user must be logged in to view, edit, or otherwise do anything in the wiki. My problem is that I found if a user had previously used the built-in MediaWiki authentication system and returned to the wiki, my extension would attempt to auto-login the user, however, they would see a "Login Required" page instead of the page they requested like they were an anonymous user. If the user then refreshed the page, they would be able to navigate, edit, etc. From what I can tell, this issue resolves itself after the UserID cookie is reset or created fresh (but has been known to strangely come up sometimes). To replicate, if there is an older User ID in the "USERID" cookie, the user is shown the "Login Required" page which is a poor user experience. Another way of showing this page is by removing the user account from the database and refreshing the wiki page. As a result, the user will again see the "Login Required" page. Does anyone know how I can use debugging to find out why MediaWiki thinks the user is not signed in when the cookies are set properly and all it takes is a page refresh? Critical CPU hungry processes are being starved of resources and causing a processing backlog. The problem is happening on all the 12th Generation Dell servers (r620s) in a recently deployed cluster. I don't think that's what is happening though. Dell suggested that the author try using the Performance profile, but that didn't help. He ended up applying some settings in Dell's guide for configuring a server for low latency environments and one of those settings (or a combination thereof) seems to have fixed the problem. Kernel.org bug #36182 notes that power-limit interrupt debugging was enabled by default, which is causing performance degradation in scenarios where CPU voltage regulation is kicking in. A RHN KB article (RHN login required) mentions a problem impacting PE r620 and r720 servers not running the Performance profile, and recommends an update to a kernel released two weeks ago. ...Except we are running the Performance profile... Everything I can find online is running me in circles here. What's the heck is going on?

Launching mysql server: same permissions for root and for user

Hi folks, have been directed here from stackoverflow here, am reposting the question and adding my.cnf at the end of a post. so far in my 10+ years experience with linux, all the permission problems I've ever encountered, have been successfully solved with chmod -R 777 /path/where/the/problem/has/occured (every lie has a grain of truth in it :) This time the trick doesn't work, so I'm turning to you for help. I'm compiling mysql server from scratch with zc.buildout (www . buildout . org). I do launch it by executing /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, this works. The thing is that i'll be launching this from within supervisor (supervisord . org) script, and when used on the deployment server, it'll need it to be launched with root permissions(so that nginx server, launched with the same script, would have access to 80 port). The problem is that sudo /home/toinbis/.../parts/mysql/bin/mysqld_safe, fails, generating the error, posted bellow, in mysql error log (apache and nginx works as expected). http://lists.mysql.com/mysql/216045 suggests, that "there are two errors: A missing table and a file system that mysqld doesn't have access to". Mysqldatadir and all the mysql server binary files has 777 permissions, talbe mysql.plugin does exist and has 777 permissions (why Can't open the mysql.plugin table?), "sudo touch mysql_datadir/tmp/file" does create file (why Can't create/write to file /home/toinbis/.../runtime/mysql_datadir/tmp/ib4e9Huz?). chgrp -R mysql mysql_datadir and adding "root, toinbis, mysql" users to mysql group ( cat /etc/group | grep mysql outputs mysql:x:124:root,toinbis,mysql) has no effect - when i launch it as a casual user, it starts, when as a root - it fails. Does mysql server, even started as root, tries to operate as other, let's say, 'mysql' user? but even in that case, adding mysql user to mysql group and making all the mysql_datadirs files belong to mysql group should make things work smoothly. FFmpeg creates emtpy (black) frames

I have a set of images from a timelapse shot (172 JPG files) that I want to convert into a movie. I tried several parameters with FFmpeg, but all I get is a video with black frames (though it has the expected length). ffmpeg -f image2 -vcodec mjpeg -y -i img_%03d.jpg timelapse2.mpg The command above creates this video: http://sdm-net.org/data/timelapse2.mpg What I'm expecting is something like this (created with Time Lapse Assembler.app): https://vimeo.com/39038362 - This is my fallback option, but I'd really like to create timelapse movies from a script. I'm on OSX Lion (10.7.3) with FFmpeg version (0.10) installed via Homebrew. I also tried to find a proper version of mencoder for OSX, but this doesn't seem to be an easy task. Also, ImageMagick's convert doesn't seem to work nicely, it creates really bad output and it seems there's not much I can do about it... There are a variety of tools available to help you and Support diagnose SOA Suite issues in 11g but it can be confusing as to which tool is appropriate for a particular situation and what their relationships are. This blog post will introduce the various tools and attempt to clarify what each is for and how they are related. Let's first list the tools we'll be addressing: RDA: Remote Diagnostic Agent DFW: Diagnostic Framework Selective Tracing DMS: Dynamic Monitoring Service ODL: Oracle Diagnostic Logging ADR: Automatic Diagnostics Repository ADRCI: Automatic Diagnostics Repository Command Interpreter WLDF: WebLogic Diagnostic Framework This overview is not mean to be a comprehensive guide on using all of these tools, however, extensive reference materials are included that will provide many more details on their execution. Another point to note is that all of these tools are applicable for Fusion Middleware as a whole but specific products may or may not have implemented features to leverage them. A couple of the tools have a WebLogic Scripting Tool or 'WLST' interface. WLST is a command interface for executing pre-built functions and custom scripts against a domain. This demo is NOT focused on product features, but aims to guide users through a complete BPM lifecycle. The scenario is based on improving a simple order process (scenario details are in the demo script). Avitek Corporation is sufferinng from a manual email-driven ordering process. Sales reps don’t know where the customer orders are stuck (no visibility) and finance users are unable to manually approve every order (no automation). There are several areas where this process can be improved with Business Process Management technology. This demo shows how improving following areas will ignificantly help resolve the business problems Avitek Corporation is facing. Areas for improvement include: Utilizing BPM for process management, rather than an unregulated, email-based process. Utilizing automated services, rather than requiring a human to key into a system. For example, Finance checking the customer’s credit rating is something that could be automated. I am building a site and there is a categories.tpl that I want to go where sitemap.php is. sorry i am brand new to all this. let me try to be more clear.id show you a picture but it is marking it as spam. i have a menu at the top of my site like with any retail site. Calculus? Need help solving for a time-dependent variable given some other variables.

Long story short, I'm making a platform game. I'm not old enough to have taken Calculus yet, so I know not of derivatives or integrals, but I know of them. The desired behavior is for my character to automagically jump when there is a block to either side of him that is above the one he's standing on; for instance, stairs. This way the player can just hold left / right to climb stairs, instead of having to spam the jump key too. The issue is with the way I've implemented jumping; I've decided to go mario-style, and allow the player to hold 'jump' longer to jump higher. To do so, I have a 'jump' variable which is added to the player's Y velocity. The jump variable increases to a set value when the 'jump' key is pressed, and decreases very quickly once the 'jump' key is released, but decreases less quickly so long as you hold the 'jump' key down, thus providing continuous acceleration up as long as you hold 'jump.' This also makes for a nice, flowing jump, rather than a visually jarring, abrupt acceleration. So, in order to account for variable stair height, I want to be able to calculate exactly what value the 'jump' variable should get in order to jump exactly to the height of the stair; preferably no more, no less, though slightly more is permissible. This way the character can jump up steep or shallow flights of stairs without it looking weird or being slow. sp_send_dbmail attach files stored as varbinary in database

I have a two part question relating to sending query results as attachments using sp_send_dbmail. Problem 1: Only basic .txt files will open. Any other format like .pdf or .jpg are corrupted. Problem 2: When attempting to send multiple attachments, I receive one file with all file names glued together. But clearly original headers are lost. It's also worth noting that attachment file sizes are different than the original files. That is most likely due to improper encoding as well. So I'm hoping there's a way to create file headers using the stored mimetype, or some way to include file headers in the binary data? I'm also not confident in the values of the last few parameters, and I know coalesce is not quite right, because it prepends the first file name with a comma. But good documentation is nearly impossible to find. Please help!
