• Get Flickr Sets

  Hi everyone. Usual stuff, Googled forever, looked on here, no help. Yet. What I want is to list the sets of photos I have on Flickr. Nice & simple, it would seem. I want the 'title image' (the one used as the thumb for it on Flickr its self), the title and URL. Can't be that hard, can it? The language of choice is PHP (5.1.6), or JS (jQuery if possible). Both are good.

• How do I determine darker or lighter color variant of a given color?

  Given a source color of any hue by the system or user, I'd like a simple algorithm I can use to work out a lighter or darker variants of the selected color. Similar to effects used on Windows Live Messenger for styling the user interface. Language is C# with .net 3.5. Responding to comment: Color format is (Alpha)RGB. With values as bytes or floats. Marking answer: For the context of my use (a few simple UI effects), the answer I'm marking as accepted is actually the most simple for this context. However, I've given up votes to the more complex and accurate answers too. Anyone doing more advanced color operations and finding this thread in future should definitely check those out. • RESTful API: How to handle translated textfields in representations?

  I am designing a RESTful API for a booking application. There are accommodations that you can request a list or the details. As the application targets a multi-language audience, the descriptions are (sometimes) available in different languages. Now I'm not sure how to handle these translations in the representation of an accommodation. Without the multiple languages I would make "description" a field or the accommodation object, quite simple. Any idea how to solve this elegantly? My current idea: Add a list of descriptions with text<-culture pairs instead of the description field and an additional subressource /descriptions to the accommodation for the creating (POST), updating (PUT) and deleting (DELETE) of new translations.

• SWIG: Throwing exceptions from Python to C++

  We've got an interface we've defined in C++ (abstract class, all functions pure virtual) which will be extended in Python. To overcome the cross-language polymorphism issues we're planning on using SWIG directors. I've read how to catch exceptions thrown from C++ code in our Python code here, here, here, and even on SO. It's fairly straight forward and I'm not expecting issues with handling our library's own exceptions. What I'd like to know and can't seem to find in the documentation is how to have our Python implementation of the extended C++ interface throw those C++ exceptions in a way that makes them visible to the C++ code. We could make small functions within the *.i files such that each function throws our exceptions: void throw_myException(){ throw MyException; } but I'm wondering how it will interact with the Python code. Anyone have any experience with throwing C++ exceptions from Python code?

• Automatic program update and Windows 7

  Hi We have a suite of programs that check for new versions at startup, and then download new versions to run if required. This is obviously a problem in Windows 7, when it is locked down as a 'standard user', as they can't write to the c:\program files directory and below. Anyone seen a example of an application that gets around with issue ? Our applications are written in Delphi, but an example in any language would be useful. Thanks in advance Update: We already have a system for determing whether a new version exists, the only problem is the download and install (if required), as this requires elevation. I can't think of a way that doesn't require an elevation prompt, or our users to reduce their security settings. Update 2 : I've asked a subsequent question, rather than adding a new one here

• Cure for puzzle piece programming habbits?

  Even though I went to a decent CS school, I was still taught with the mentality of programming with puzzle pieces. By puzzle pieces I mean, looking up code segments at each step of the development process and adding them together as needed. Eventually gathering all of the pieces and having a properly working program. So as an example, if in my program the next step is to tokenize a string, I go to google and search "how do I tokenize a string in language". All instead of critically thinking about its implementation. I personally don't think its a very good way to program and I always seem to forget everything that I have searched for. So how can I get out of this puzzle piece mode of programmer that I was taught.

• Are spinlocks a good choice for a memory allocator?

  I've suggested to the maintainers of the D programming language runtime a few times that the memory allocator/garbage collector should use spinlocks instead of regular OS critical sections. This hasn't really caught on. Here are the reasons I think spinlocks would be better: At least in synthetic benchmarks that I did, it's several times faster than OS critical sections when there's contention for the memory allocator/GC lock. Edit: Empirically, using spinlocks didn't even have measurable overhead in a single-core environment, probably because locks need to be held for such a short period of time in a memory allocator. Memory allocations and similar operations usually take a small fraction of a timeslice, and even a small fraction of the time a context switch takes, making it silly to context switch in the case of contention. A garbage collection in the implementation in question stops the world anyhow. There won't be any spinning during a collection. Are there any good reasons not to use spinlocks in a memory allocator/garbage collector implementation?

• How can I call an executable to run on a separate machine within a program on my own machine (win xp

  My objective is to write a program which will call another executable on a separate computer(all with win xp) with parameters determined at run-time, then repeat for several more computers, and then collect the results. In short, I'm working on a grid-computing project. The algorithm itself being used is already coded in FORTRAN, but we are looking for an efficient way to run it on many computers at once. I suppose one way to accomplish this would be to upload a script to each computer and then run said script on each computer, all automatically and dependent on my own parameters. But how can I write a program which will write to, upload, and run a script on a separate computer? I had considered GridGain, but the algorithm is already coded and in a different language, so that is ruled out. My current guess at accomplishing this task is using Expect (wiki/Expect), but I have no knowledge of the tool. Any advice appreciated.

  I know it's usually the other way around, but I have some extenuating requirements that must be met (read as "No one bothered to do the research and now I have to bail them out") I have a standard user control (ascx) that is to be imported into a SharePoint 2007 website. Due to a design constraint, a sharepoint web part that is also needed has to be nested inside of this user control.   Nemerle is a C-like language and mostly works very well with cindent. However, its construct analogous to switch is called match: match (x) { | "Hello World" => ... | _ => ... } Is it possible to get the cinoptions for switch statements to apply to this construct, instead? Maybe there is a regular expression I can set somewhere. If not, can I get the vertical bars to align with the braces another way?

  I'm new to Haskell and I'm trying to use a pure SHA1 implementation in my app (Data.Digest.Pure.SHA) with a JSON library (AttoJSON). AttoJSON uses Data.ByteString.Char8 bytestrings, SHA uses Data.ByteString.Lazy bytestrings, and some of my string literals in my app are [Char]. • Which parallel sorting algorithm has the best average case performance?

  Sorting takes O(n log n) in the serial case. If we have O(n) processors we would hope for a linear speedup. O(log n) parallel algorithms exist but they have a very high constant. They also aren't applicable on commodity hardware which doesn't have anywhere near O(n) processors. With p processors, reasonable algorithms should take O(n/p log n/p) time. In the serial case, quick sort has the best runtime complexity on average. A parallel quick sort algorithm is easy to implement (see here and here). However it doesn't perform well since the very first step is to partition the whole collection on a single core. I have found information on many parallel sort algorithms but so far I have not seen anything pointing to a clear winner. I'm looking to sort lists of 1 million to 100 million elements in a JVM language running on 8 to 32 cores.

  I'm going to ask a newbie question here. I need to use a control I found online in my code, but it was written in the wrong language. It is in C# and I am using VB.net for work. I have all of the code for the control which works beautifully in C#, but I had issues with it not working very well in VB.   The docs say: you should implement methods of the form validate:error:, as defined by the NSKeyValueCoding protocol so lets say I have an attribute which is an int: friendAge I want to make sure that any friend may not be younger than 30. So how would I make that validation method? -validateFriendAge:error: What am I gonna do in there, exactly? And what shall I do with that NSError I get passed? I think it has an dictionary where I can return a humanly readable string in an arbitrary language (i.e. the one that's used currently), so I can output a reasonable error like: "Friend is not old enough"... how to do that?

  Hi I am trying to do some maths with my VBA excel (prime factorization) and I am hitting the limit of the long data type (runtime error 6 Overflow). Is there any way to get around this and still stay within VBA? (I am aware that the obvious one would be to use another more appropriate programming language) Thanks for help in advance!   Is there, by chance, and emerging Haskell UI framework for Windows? I recently took up looking over the language, and from what I see, it would be great little "one-off" applications (elaborate scripts). However, without a good UI framework I can't see it getting in under the smoke and mirrors of the more obvious contenders. I've read that there are many frameworks, but none are full-featured. I'm just wondering if this is something that's on the rise, or is it simply too difficult to get enough developers going in the same direction with one?

  A while ago, when I was learning Javascript, I studied Javascript: the good parts, and I particularly enjoyed the chapters on the bad and the ugly parts. Of course, I did not agree with everything, as summing up the design defects of a programming language is to a certain extent subjective - although, for instance, I guess everyone would agree that the keyword with was a mistake in Javascript. Nevertheless, I find it useful to read such reviews: even if one does not agree, there is a lot to learn. Is there a blog entry or some book describing design mistakes for Python? For instance I guess some people would count the lack of tail call optimization a mistake; there may be other issues (or non-issues) which are worth learning about.
