• Programmaticaly finding the Landau notation (Big O or Theta notation) of an algorithm?

  I'm used to search for the Landau (Big O, Theta...) notation of my algorithms by hand to make sure they are as optimized as they can be, but when the functions are getting really big and complex, it's taking way too much time to do it by hand. it's also prone to human errors. I spent some time on Codility (coding/algo exercises), and noticed they will give you the Landau notation for your submitted solution (both in Time and Memory usage). I was wondering how they do that... How would you do it? Is there another way besides Lexical Analysis or parsing of the code? PS: This question concerns mainly PHP and or JavaScript, but I'm opened to any language and theory.

• Is there an Android remote app compatible with LibreOffice Impress under Ubuntu?

  I have an upcoming presentation I want to make in LibreOffice Impress on my Ubuntu 12.10 laptop. I was wondering if I could get ahold of an Android app which would act like a remote control, allowing me to switch between slides from my phone over WiFi without having to stay near the laptop (I've been told I need to move around more during my presentations). A quick look on the Google Play store seemed to turn up a handful of PowerPoint remote apps for Windows or maybe Mac. I also took a look at Can an Android phone control Ubuntu like a remote?, but that seems more for controlling an Ubuntu media center. Is there anything which will work with LibreOffice Impress on Ubuntu? My phone is a Samsung Galaxy Precedent on Straight Talk, running Android 2.2.2 (latest available version from the carrier). It's not rooted, and there's not much memory on it either, so the smaller and simpler the app the better. Also, it has to be free because I currently don't have a means to pay for an app I may/may not like.

• World Record Batch Rate on Oracle JD Edwards Consolidated Workload with SPARC T4-2

  Oracle produced a World Record batch throughput for single system results on Oracle's JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Day-in-the-Life benchmark using Oracle's SPARC T4-2 server running Oracle Solaris Containers and consolidating JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Oracle WebLogic servers and the Oracle Database 11g Release 2. The workload includes both online and batch workload. The SPARC T4-2 server delivered a result of 8,000 online users while concurrently executing a mix of JD Edwards EnterpriseOne Long and Short batch processes at 95.5 UBEs/min (Universal Batch Engines per minute). In order to obtain this record benchmark result, the JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Oracle WebLogic and Oracle Database 11g Release 2 servers were executed each in separate Oracle Solaris Containers which enabled optimal system resources distribution and performance together with scalable and manageable virtualization. One SPARC T4-2 server running Oracle Solaris Containers and consolidating JD Edwards EnterpriseOne, Oracle WebLogic servers and the Oracle Database 11g Release 2 utilized only 55% of the available CPU power. The Oracle DB server in a Shared Server configuration allows for optimized CPU resource utilization and significant memory savings on the SPARC T4-2 server without sacrificing performance. This configuration with SPARC T4-2 server has achieved 33% more Users/core, 47% more UBEs/min and 78% more Users/rack unit than the IBM Power 770 server. The SPARC T4-2 server with 2 processors ran the JD Edwards "Day-in-the-Life" benchmark and supported 8,000 concurrent online users while concurrently executing mixed batch workloads at 95.5 UBEs per minute. The IBM Power 770 server with twice as many processors supported only 12,000 concurrent online users while concurrently executing mixed batch workloads at only 65 UBEs per minute. This benchmark demonstrates more than 2x cost savings by consolidating the complete solution in a single SPARC T4-2 server compared to earlier published results of 10,000 users and 67 UBEs per minute on two SPARC T4-2 and SPARC T4-1. The Oracle DB server used mirrored (RAID 1) volumes for the database providing high availability for the data without impacting performance. Interrupt fencing was configured on all Oracle Solaris Containers to channel the interrupts to processors other than the processor sets used for the JD Edwards Application server, Oracle WebLogic servers and the database server. A Oracle WebLogic vertical cluster was configured on each WebServer Container with twelve managed instances each to load balance users' requests and to provide the infrastructure that enables scaling to high number of users with ease of deployment and high availability. The database log writer was run in the real time RT class and bound to a processor set. The database redo logs were configured on the raw disk partitions. The Oracle Solaris Container running the Enterprise Application server completed 61 Short UBEs, 4 Long UBEs concurrently as the mixed size batch workload. The mixed size UBEs ran concurrently from the Enterprise Application server with the 8,000 online users driven by the LoadRunner. • SQL SERVER – Fundamentals of Columnstore Index

  There are two kind of storage in database. Row Store and Column Store. Row store does exactly as the name suggests – stores rows of data on a page – and column store stores all the data in a column on the same page. These columns are much easier to search – instead of a query searching all the data in an entire row whether the data is relevant or not, column store queries need only to search much lesser number of the columns. This means major increases in search speed and hard drive use. Additionally, the column store indexes are heavily compressed, which translates to even greater memory and faster searches. I am sure this looks very exciting and it does not mean that you convert every single index from row store to column store index. One has to understand the proper places where to use row store or column store indexes. Let us understand in this article what is the difference in Columnstore type of index. Column store indexes are run by Microsoft’s VertiPaq technology. However, all you really need to know is that this method of storing data is columns on a single page is much faster and more efficient. Creating a column store index is very easy, and you don’t have to learn new syntax to create them. You just need to specify the keyword “COLUMNSTORE” and enter the data as you normally would. Keep in mind that once you add a column store to a table, though, you cannot delete, insert or update the data – it is READ ONLY. However, since column store will be mainly used for data warehousing, this should not be a big problem. You can always use partitioning to avoid rebuilding the index. A columnstore index stores each column in a separate set of disk pages, rather than storing multiple rows per page as data traditionally has been stored. The difference between column store and row store approaches is illustrated below: In case of the row store indexes multiple pages will contain multiple rows of the columns spanning across multiple pages. In case of column store indexes multiple pages will contain multiple single columns. This will lead only the columns needed to solve a query will be fetched from disk. Additionally there is good chance that there will be redundant data in a single column which will further help to compress the data, this will have positive effect on buffer hit rate as most of the data will be in memory and due to same it will not need to be retrieved. Let us see small example of how columnstore index improves the performance of the query on a large table. As a first step let us create databaseset which is large enough to show performance impact of columnstore index. The time taken to create sample database may vary on different computer based on the resources. The amount of the pages it has to read to run query is drastically reduced as the column which are needed in the query are stored in the same page and query does not have to go through every single page to read those columns. If we enable execution plan and compare we can see that column store index performance way better than regular index in this case. • Can I perform a distribution upgrade without rebooting?

  Hi, I would, ideally, like to run a distribution upgrade that doesn't end in a complete reboot of the machine (owing to an irritation in my hardware that requires a period of disconnection from the power supply before my SSD can be detected). What would be the procedure for doing this from a desktop environment? I would image: dist-upgrade shutdown all graphical services restart X I'd appreciate any advice (particularly on the exact procedure for step 2, if this correct). NB. • The APEX of Business Value...or...the Business Value of APEX? Oracle Cloud Takes Oracle APEX to New Heights!

  The attraction of Oracle Application Express (APEX) has increased tremendously with the recent launch of the Oracle Cloud. APEX already supported departmental development and deployment of business applications with minimal involvement from the IT department. Positioned as the ideal replacement for MS Access, APEX probably has managed better to capture the eye of developers and was used for enterprise application development at least as much as for the kind of tactical applications that Oracle strategically positioned it for. With APEX as PaaS from the Oracle Cloud, a leap is made to a much higher level of business value. Now the IT department is not even needed to make infrastructure available with a database running  on it. All the business needs is a credit card. And the business application that is developed, managed and used from the cloud through a standard browser can now just as easily be accessed by users from around the world as by users from the business department itself. As a bonus – the development of the APEX application is also done in the cloud – with no special demands on the location or the enterprise access privileges of the developers. To sum it up: APEX from Oracle Cloud Database Service get the development environment up and running in minutes no involvement from the internal IT department required (not for infrastructure, platform, or development) superior availability and scalability is offered by Oracle users from anywhere in the world can be invited to access the application developers from anywhere in the world can participate in creating and maintaining the application In addition: because the Oracle Cloud platform is the same as the on-premise platform, you can still decide to move the APEX application between the cloud and the local environment – and back again. The REST-ful services that are available through APEX allow programmatic interaction with the database under the APEX application. That means that this database can be synchronized with on premise databases or data stores in (other) clouds. Through the Oracle Cloud Messaging Service, the APEX application can easily enter into asynchronous conversations with other APEX applications, Fusion Middleware applications (ADF, SOA, BPM) and any other type of REST-enabled application. In my opinion, now, for the first time perhaps, APEX offers the attraction to the business that has been suggested before: because of the cloud, all the business needs is  a credit card (a budget of $175 per month), an internet-connection and a browser. Not like before, with a PC hidden under a desk or a database running somewhere in the data center. No matter how unattended: equipment is needed, power is consumed, the database needs to be kept running and if Oracle Database XE does not suffice, software licenses are required as well. And this set up always has a security challenge associated with it. The cloud fee for the Oracle Cloud Database Service includes infrastructure, power, licenses, availability, platform upgrades, a collection of reusable application components and the development and runtime environments containing the APEX platform. Of course this not only means that business departments can move quickly without having to convince their IT colleagues to move along – it also means that small organizations that do not even have IT colleagues can do the same. Getting tailored applications or applications up and running to get in touch with users and customers all over the world is now within easy reach for small outfits – without any investment. My misunderstanding For a long time, I was under the impression that the essence of APEX was that the business could create applications themselves – meaning that business ‘people’ would actually go into APEX to create the application. To me APEX was too much of a developers’ tool to see that happen – apart from the odd business analyst who missed his or her calling as an IT developer. Having looked at various other cloud based development offerings – including Force.com, Mendix, WaveMaker, WorkXpress, OrangeScape, Caspio and Cordys- I have come to realize my mistake. All these platforms are positioned for 'the business' but require a fair amount of coding and technical expertise. However, they make the business happy nevertheless, because they allow the  business to completely circumvent the IT department. That is the essence. Not having to go through the red tape, not having to wait for IT staff who (justifiably) need weeks or months to provide an environment, not having to deal with administrators (again, justifiably) refusing to take on that 'strange environment'. Being able to think of an initiative and turn into action right away. The business does not have to build the application - it can easily hire some external developers or even that nerdy boy next door. They can get started, get an application up and running and invite users in – especially external users such as customers. They will worry later about upgrades and life cycle management and integration. To get applications up and running quickly and start turning ideas into action and results rightaway. That is the key selling point for all these cloud offerings, including APEX from the Cloud. And it is a compelling story. For APEX probably even more so than for the others. While I consider APEX a somewhat proprietary framework compared with ‘regular’ Java/JEE web development (or even .NET and PHP  development), it is still far more open than most cloud environments. APEX is SQL and PL/SQL based – nothing special about those languages – and can run just as easily on site as in the cloud. It has been around since 2004 (that is not including several predecessors that fed straight into APEX) so it can be considered pretty mature. Oracle as a company seems pretty stable – so investments in its technology are bound to last for some time to come. By the way: neither APEX nor the other Cloud DevaaS offerings are targeted at creating applications with enormous life times. They fit into a trend of agile development and rapid life cycle management, with fairly light weight user interfaces that quickly adapt to taste, technology trends and functional requirements and that are easily replaced. APEX and ADF – a match made in heaven?! (or at least in the sky) Note that using APEX only for cloud based database with REST-ful Services is also a perfectly viable scenario: any UI – mobile or browser based – capable of consuming REST-ful services can be created against such a business tier. Creating an ADF Mobile application for example that runs aginst REST-ful services is a best practice for mobile development. Such REST-ful services can be consumed from any service provider – including the Cloud based APEX powered REST-ful services running against the Oracle Cloud Database Service! I’ve never been a fan of the IE 8 – 10 developer tools so I’ve mostly been using Chrome or Firefox’s Firebug. This revamp looks great and seems to work well. • SQL SERVER – Parsing SSIS Catalog Messages – Notes from the Field #030

SQL Server Integration Service (SSIS) is one of the most key essential part of the entire Business Intelligence (BI) story. It is a platform for data integration and workflow applications. The tool may also be used to automate maintenance of SQL Server databases and updates to multidimensional cube data. In this episode of the Notes from the Field series I requested SSIS Expert Andy Leonard to discuss one of the most interesting concepts of SSIS Catalog Messages. There are plenty of interesting and useful information captured in the SSIS catalog and we will learn together how to explore the same. The SSIS Catalog captures a lot of cool information by default. Here’s a query I use to parse messages from the catalog.operation_messages table in the SSISDB database, where the logged messages are stored. This query is set up to parse a default message transmitted by the Lookup Transformation. It’s one of my favorite messages in the SSIS log because it gives me excellent information when I’m tuning SSIS data flows. The message reads similar to: Data Flow Task:Information: The Lookup processed 4485 rows in the cache. The processing time was 0.015 seconds. The cache used 1376895 bytes of memory.   In Item2 on page 16, (Prefer consts, enums, and inlines to #defines), Scott says: 'Also, though good compilers won't set aside storage for const objects of integer types'. I don't understand this. If I define a const object, eg const int myval = 5; then surely the compiler must set aside some memory (of int size) to store the value 5? Or is const data stored in some special way? This is more a question of computer storage I suppose. Basically, how does the computer store const objects so that no storage is set aside?

  Look at IntellijIDEA IDE, its a pretty sick ide but its made in Java and we all know that Java suck at GUI. Same goes for Eclipse. Though its way better and adopted SWT but it could have been best if it was developed in C/C++. We have really good systems now and thats why we don't feel that these IDES are nothing much but a memory hog. Why the IDE's have to be written in the language they are designed for ? Okay i know that IDE is a cool way to show how strong a language can be but even then someitmes, that specific language might not be best for a particular tastk.

When user add product to cart, create a Cart Model, add items to cart and save to DB. Convert Cart model to cart data and save it to HTTP session. Any update/ edit update underlying cart in DB and update data snap shot in Session. When user click on view cart page, just pick cart data from Session and display to customer. I have following queries regarding HTTP Session How good is it to store large data (Shopping Cart) in Session? How scalable this approach can be ? (With respect to Session) Won't my application going to eat and demand a lot of memory? Is my approach is fine or do i need to consider other points while designing this? Though, we can control what all cart data should be stored in the Session, but still we need to have certain information in cart data being stored in session?

• Genetic algorithms with large chromosomes

  I'm trying to solve the graph partitioning problem on large graphs (between a billion and trillion elements) using GA. The problem is that even one chromosome will take several gigs of memory. Are there any general compression techniques for chromosome encoding? Or should I look into distributed GA? NOTE: using some sort of evolutionary algorithm for this problem is a must! GA seems to be the best fit (although not for such large chromosomes). EDIT: I'm looking for state-of-the-art methods that other authors have used to solved the problem of large chromosomes. Note that I'm looking for either a more general solution or a solution particular to graph partitioning. Basically I'm looking for related works, as I, too, am attempting using GA for the problem of graph partitioning. So far I haven't found anyone that might have this problem of large chromosomes nor has tried to solve it.

  I am having overheating issues when watching flash videos. Here is all the relevant information that I could think of. Please help. --Often when playing flash videos it operates at 95 degrees C. --Only gets that hot when on full screen (but still in the 80s otherwise) --Sometimes reaches 100 degrees and shuts down. --fan runs at around 4500 RPM when hot (not to mention I can here it speed up) --Happens under Ubuntu 12.04 and 12.10 (did not use Ubuntu before then) --Overheating happens on more than one site (for example youtube and Comedy Central) --My computer does not overheat otherwise. --Usually runs around 50-60 degrees C. --Maybe if compiling or doing updates can it get to 70 or 75 degree C. --Have a dual boot, and under Windows I do not have this issue. --I use firefox, but have the same issue if using Chrome --I have a Lenovo T410, currently running Ubuntu 12.10 --Intel® Core™ i5 CPU M 540 @ 2.53GHz × 4 --4 GB of memory, 64 bit OS --Graphics: NVS 3100M/PCIe/SSE2 Thanks and let me know if you need more info, Ben

  Error occurs during startup of Ubuntu Installation. Sometimes I'll get to the Welcome screen just like this, the screen will just glitch out, or will simply freeze during the loading icon. nvidia GTS 250 Intel Core i7 920 9 GB Memory I was able to install 12.04.1, but after performing upgrade to 12.10 it get the same problem on startup; glitches in graphics, missing content etc. Also noticed after the upgrade, I'm no longer able to connect to internet; neither ethernet or wifi.

• Which GPU with my CPU for 1080p flash?

  Based on the following site: http://www.adobe.com/products/flashplayer/systemreqs/ I need the following minimum spec to play 1080p flash video via a browser: CPU: 1.8GHz Intel Core Duo, AMD Athlon 64 X2 4200+, or faster processor RAM: 512MB of RAM GPU: 64MB of graphics memory I only have a 2.8GHz Pentium 4 process which is no where near as good as the processor listed above. I don't want to upgrade my processor as I think it will mean I have to change the motherboard etc. So, my question is, what is the cheapest PCI-E GPU I can buy which will allow me to play smooth 1080p flash video via a browser. I think the cheapest I can get is the 8400GS, but am not sure if that will be able to handle 1080p with the processor I have. I have looked at the GT520 and was wondering if this is the cheapest GPU which I need, or if there is something cheaper which will do 1080p with a 2.8GHz Pentium 4. Or, will I have to get something better than a GT520?

  Concrete issue: The Oneiric nginx package is at version 1.0.5-1, released in July 2011 according to the changelog. The recent memory-disclosure vulnerability (advisory page, CVE-2012-1180, DSA-2434-1) isn't fixed in 1.0.5-1. If I'm not misreading the Ubuntu CVE page, all Ubuntu versions seem to ship a vulnerable nginx. Is this true? If so: I though there was a security team at Canonical that's actively working on issues like this, so I expected to get a security update within a short timeframe (hours or days) through apt-get update. Is this expectation -- that keeping my packages up-to-date is enough to stop my server from having known vulnerabilities -- generally wrong? If so: What should I do to keep it secure? Reading the Ubuntu security notices wouldn't have helped in this case, as the nginx vulnerability was never posted there.

Does anyone here know why this isn't working for me, or better yet, how to fix it?   I have installed UBUNTU 12.04 on my Athlon 64-bit Desktop (2GB Memory) in a dual-boot with Win XP. The machine is hardwired to my D-Link N router which uses a DSL Modem to access the Internet. My Home Network was established in the router via the XP machine. When I boot UBUNTU I am able to access the Internet via this set-up but I can neither access the home network nor see the three other laptop computers (wireless access) on the network. These others are running Win Vista, Win 7, and UBUNTU 10.04 (this latter accesses the home network normally). All are visible and accessible when XP is running. I would appreciate thoughts as I am seriously thinking about changing all the computers to UBUNTU but do need to be able to operate the network.
