• Documentation in Oracle Retail Analytics, Release 13.3

  The 13.3 Release of Oracle Retail Analytics is now available on the Oracle Software Delivery Cloud and from My Oracle Support. The Oracle Retail Analytics 13.3 release introduced significant new functionality with its new Customer Analytics module. The Customer Analytics module enables you to perform retail analysis of customers and customer segments. Market basket analysis (part of the Customer Analytics module) provides insight into which products have strong affinity with one another. Customer behavior information is obtained from mining sales transaction history, and it is correlated with customer segment attributes to inform promotion strategies. The ability to understand market basket affinities allows marketers to calculate, monitor, and build promotion strategies based on critical metrics such as customer profitability. Highlighted End User Documentation Updates With the addition of Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, the documentation set addresses both modules under the single umbrella name of Oracle Retail Analytics. Note, however, that the modules, Oracle Retail Merchandising Analytics and Oracle Retail Customer Analytics, are licensed separately. To accommodate new functionality, the Retail Analytics suite of documentation has been updated in the following areas, among others: The User Guide has been updated with an overview of Customer Analytics. It also contains a list of metrics associated with Customer Analytics. The Operations Guide provides details on Market Basket Analysis as well as an updated list of APIs. The program reference list now also details the module (Merchandising Analytics or Customer Analytics) to which each program applies. The Data Model was updated to include new information related to Customer Analytics, and a new section, Market Basket Analysis Module, was added to the document with its own entity relationship diagrams and data definitions. • How do i make an AJAX block crawlable?

  I have a block with a few tabs. When the user clicks the tab the content of that block get loaded. Now I would like to make it crawlable by the search engines and at the same time I want to maintain the good user-experience. I figured out a couple of alternative but each one has its own shortcomings. The approached that i could come up with. Use hashbangs and then use this. But hashbangs are not good and things of past now. Secondly it will make my content crawlable by only googlebot as yahoo and bing dont support this. Use GET PARAMETERIZED fallback incase when javascript doesn't work. This will work for all bots and also would be nice as it would work without javascript. But then this will create duplicates of my page as this block is only a very small section of my page and i have like around 5-6 tabs. So it means that many duplicates! Doing this without AJAX is not an option as it would only increase the page load time as all these blocks have heavy media content in them!

• Using Microsoft's Chart Controls In An ASP.NET Application: Serializing Chart Data

  In most usage scenarios, the data displayed in a Microsoft Chart control comes from some dynamic source, such as from a database query. The appearance of the chart can be modified dynamically, as well; past installments in this article series showed how to programmatically customize the axes, labels, and other appearance-related settings. However, it is possible to statically define the chart's data and appearance strictly through the control's declarative markup. One of the demos examined in the Getting Started article rendered a column chart with seven columns whose labels and values were defined statically in the <asp:Series> tag's <Points> collection. Given this functionality, it should come as no surprise that the Microsoft Chart Controls also support serialization. Serialization is the process of persisting the state of a control or an object to some other medium, such as to disk. Deserialization is the inverse process, and involves taking the persisted data and recreating the control or object. With just a few lines of code you can persist the appearance settings, the data, or both to a file on disk or to any stream. Likewise, it takes just a few lines of codes to reconstitute a chart from the persisted information. This article shows how to use the Microsoft Chart Control's serialization functionality by examining a demo application that allows users to create custom charts, specifying the data to plot and some appearance-related settings. The user can then save a "snapshot" of this chart, which persists its appearance and data to a record in a database. From another page, users can view these saved chart snapshots. • Linux memory fragmentation

  Hi all, Is there a way to detect memory fragmentation on linux ? This is because on some long running servers I have noticed performance degradation and only after I restart process I see better performance. I noticed it more when using linux huge page support -- are huge pages in linux more prone to fragmentation ? I have looked at /proc/buddyinfo in particular. I want to know whether there are any better ways(not just CLI commands per se, any program or theoretical background would do) to look at it.

• Bluetooth device won't re-add after being removed (Windows 7)

  I've got a SBH52 headset, it works fine on my android phone, then I tried to use it with my Windows 7 PC, then it won't work because Microsoft Windows dosen't have native support for A2DP connections and one of the answers on the previous link said that removing the device from "devices and printers", running this software and then re-add the device would solve the problem. But the big problem is that they won't pair again: I tried, hopelessly, the suggested fixes from Windows, it won't work. By the way, it is Windows 7 (x64), it just looks like Windows 8. I had this problem once many years ago with other PC and Bluetooth device, I remember it had something to do with drivers that were not removed and I tried to delete them from somewhere, and as far as I remember it worked, but no idea how. In short, how can I pair it again with my PC?

I'm also interested in a router that has very good signal/antenna and that is easy to take with you. Please do not recommend products just because you can find them on the net, I'm interested about personal experience. Also it's good to know if you can install open-source firmware on it. Selection criteria: size signal quality price Required: to support both 110V/220V power supply, best if embedded or retractable cord.

• Home network with Windows 7 as router

  Background: I have tried to use routers, but so far all of them can't handle the bandwidth, number of connections eventually limited by the hardware resources, so overall the home routers are decreasing the internet speed. I went through DD-WRT and stuff like that. Question: What I want is to use my Windows7 PC as router. It has 2 LAN cards. I'm going to connect to this router another desktop 2 pcs and notebook through wireless router. The main question is what is the most efficient way to turn this Windows7 box(and I need Windows for native NTFS support) into router with NAT/Routing/Firewall functionality? Is there any routing software recommended for this purpose or I should just use windows native "Internet Sharing"? I'm going to run SIP phones in the LAN, so I need friendly NAT(Full cone perhaps). Also I'm going to have FTP server on that Windows7 "server" PC. As firewall I'm thinking about Comodo. Need to drop all incoming, unless explicitly allowed.

  Oracle Secure Global Desktop provides secure access to centralized applications—Microsoft Windows, UNIX, mainframe, and midrange—from a wide variety of popular client devices, including Windows PCs, Oracle Solaris workstations, Linux PCs, and thin clients. Secure Global Desktop is certified for use with Microsoft Windows Server 2003 and 2008 virtualized environments acting as desktop clients connecting to Oracle E-Business Suite Release 12 environments.  32-bit and 64-bit versions of Microsoft Windows Server are certified.   To make the most effective use of a portal and content management platform, personalization is a critical component of delivering the most value to end users. Regardless of what type of constituents you may be serving, content relevance is critical to support business goals like self-service, communication within a geographically distributed organization, lead generation and customer loyalty effectively. This especially holds true when serving external parties, as they generally have a lower threshold for digging through your site to locate a particular item of interest and are apt to leave or dial a helpdesk if their efforts cannot locate the relevant information. Optimal delivery of content can be achieved through a variety of methods, but it is generally a blend of security and filtering via meta data that can drive the most return with the least amount of upfront effort and ongoing upkeep. • What are some respectable online colleges to get my BS in Software Engineering? [closed]

  I have an AA in Social Science and want to earn my BS in Software Engineering. However, I work full time and have a family to support, so my only option is online. I'm really considering Colorado Technical University. They promote a program called Bachelor of Science in Software Engineering on their website and Google searches, however, while I'm filling out the application; the program is actually called Bachelor of Science in Information Technology with a concentration in Software Systems Engineering Specialization. This shoots up a red flag for me. I spent the past week looking online for all kinds of schools and would prefer to go to a "brick and mortar" school's online program, however those only seem to be for international students, which I am not. Living in Colorado Springs, CO (and being prior Army) there are tons of Government DOD contractors, Lockheed Martin, Boeing, etc... that need software engineers and I'm just not sure what school they would like to see me coming from. Not only a reputable school, but also one that has great programs and will teach me real world situations and actually prepare me for my career. I would greatly appreciate any and all information or help you can offer.

• Pivotal Announces JSR-352 Compliance for Spring Batch

  Pivotal, the company currently funding development of the popular Spring Framework, recently announced JSR 352 (aka Batch Applications for the Java Platform) compliance for the Spring Batch project. More specifically, Spring Batch targets JSR-352 Java SE runtime compatibility rather than Java EE runtime compatibility. If you are surprised that APIs included in Java EE can pass TCKs targeted for Java SE, you should not be. Many other Java EE APIs target compatibility in Java SE environments such as JMS and JPA. You can read about Spring Batch's support for JSR-352 here as well as the Spring configuration to get JSR-352 working in Spring (typically a very low level implementation concern intended to be completely transparent to most JSR-352 users). JSR 352 is one of the few very encouraging cases of major active contribution to the Java EE standard from the Spring development team (the other major effort being Rod Johnson's co-leadership of JSR 330 along with Bob Lee). While IBM's Christopher Vignola led the spec and contributed IBM's years of highly mission critical batch processing experience from products like WebSphere Compute Grid and z/OS batch, the Spring team provided major influences to the API in particular for the chunk processing, listeners, splits and operational interfaces. The GlassFish team's own Mahesh Kannan also contributed, in particular by implementing much of the Java EE integration work for the reference implementation. This was an excellent example of multilateral engineering collaboration through the standards process. For many complex reasons it is not too hard to find evidence of less than amicable interaction between the Spring ecosystem and the Java EE standard over the years if one cares to dig deep enough. In reality most developers see Spring and Java EE as two sides of the same server-side Java coin. At the core Spring and Java EE ecosystems have always shared deep undercurrents of common user bases, bi-directional flows of ideas and perhaps genuine if not begrudging mutual respect. We can all hope for continued strength for both ecosystems and graceful high notes of collaboration via efforts like JSR 352.

• Oracle is a Leader again in Gartner’s Magic Quadrant for E-commerce

  Although e-commerce represents only 10% of the typical brick-and-mortar retailer’s sales, that percentage continues to climb.  So it’s no wonder that many retailers are considering the purchase of new e-commerce platforms to provide a commerce experience that keeps customers coming back.  And once again, Oracle and IBM lead the pack, identified as leaders in Gartner’s 2013 Magic Quadrant for E-Commerce along with hybris.  Many retailers are realizing the need to support Commerce Anywhere, allowing customers to interact with brands on their own terms.  Gartner reinforces this trend saying, “E-commerce is moving beyond just an online selling channel to integrated platforms delivering a unified customer experience. Traditionally, most organizations have been investing in the online channels with the objective of driving additional sales. However, customers increasingly are expecting a seamless buying experience across all channels, and e-commerce is a critical part of this evolution since it is a point where other channels are integrating to synchronize the customer experience across channels." Oracle saw this trend coming and acquired ATG, FatWire, and Endeca, all leaders in their respective markets, starting back in 2010.  The assets have been combined as Oracle Commerce and represent a comprehensive solution for retailers to sell via the Web while offering the best customer experience possible.  Retailers like JCPenney, American Apparel, and Kohl’s have recently licensed Oracle Commerce as part of their transformations. In the next two years we’ll begin to see more separation between the retailers that have a Commerce Anywhere strategy, and those that continue to flail with separate channels.  Integrating online and offline commerce, along with mobile and social aspects are becoming crucial to success in the industry.

• ANTS Memory Profiler 8 released!

  I’m excited to say that we’ve just released ANTS Memory Profiler 8! The big news is support for profiling .NET’s usage of unmanaged memory. There are two main parts to this. Firstly you can see a breakdown of unmanaged memory usage by module. This lets you see at a high level where unmanaged memory is being used – for example in the image below, it’s being used by a PDF generation library. Separately, when looking at a list of .NET classes, you can see how much unmanaged memory those classes are responsible for holding on to. You can also see that information for individual instances of those classes. Some clues you might need this: You’re using system objects or 3rd party components which deal with unmanaged memory under the hood (this includes things like the GDI+ functions used for working with bitmaps) Your application still relies on some legacy Delphi / C++ / etc code from left over from the days before your company moved over to using .NET You’ve used a previous version of ANTS Memory Profiler, and have ever seen a pie chart that looks something like this: You’ll also notice that the startup process has been entirely redesigned, bringing it in line with ANTS Performance Profiler 8, which was released earlier in the year. This makes it faster to start profiling and to run repeat profiling sessions, lets you profile using any browser instead of Internet Explorer, and also provides a host of stability improvements, particularly when launching websites in IIS. • Kinect Presentation at Chippewa Valley Code Camp

• Blogging is Hard

  Not really. But wi-fi access is limited to common areas in the COLLABORATE 10 conference center here in Las Vegas. So my grand roving iPad blog update plan has been delayed a day while I measured signal strength and searched for a place to sit. Tuesday morning, I accomplished both. Yesterday I shot a nice, quick video of Bahseer Khan about embedded decision support--a part of his Oracle Fusion Applications presentation that I think could do with some additional discussion as we ramp up for Oracle's next-generation applications. I'll post that video here by the end of the day. Later today I'll also be interviewing OAUG president David Ferguson about the prevailing trends at COLLABORATE 10, the addition of Sun (and Sun's user groups) to the Oracle portfolio, and what the next 12 month holds in store for the Oracle user community. • Multiple stores for the same niche

  I started developing a new niche of products in my country about 3 years ago. That's when I opened my first store. Everything went fine, until a year ago, when someone I thought was a friend secretly stole my idea and made his own competing store. I was pretty upset when I caught him and decided to make it as difficult as possible for him, so I made another 4 stores, trying to get him as low as possible in the search results. The new sites have similar products (although not 100% identical), slightly different titles, images and prices. They look different and are built on different e-commerce platforms. They are all hosted on the same server, have roughly the same backlinks, use the same Google account for Analytics, have the same support phone numbers etc etc. I wasn't thinking that I'm doing something fishy, so I didn't try to hide anything. Trouble is that those sites, after doing fine for a few months, dropped like bricks in search results, almost to the point that they can't be found at all. At the moment, the only site that ranks relatively well is the original one and a couple of secondary pages with no importance from one of the other sites. How did this happen? Does Google have something against this practice? Did they take action by themselves when they realized that I was trying to monopolize this niche, or did my competitor report me for some kind of webspam? And more importantly, what do I do now? Do I shutdown all but my original site and 301 redirect users to it from the others? Can I report my competitor for engaging in the same practice? (He fought back and now he has 3-4 sites, some of which still rank kind of OKish, also he has no idea about web development, SEO or marketing, he just crudely copies what I do and is slowly but surely starting to do better than me).

• How to cross-reference many character encodings with ASCII OR UTFx?

  I'm working with a binary structure, the goal of which is to index the significance of specific bits for any character encoding so that we may trigger events while doing specific checks against the profile. Each character encoding scheme has an associated system record. This record's leading value will be a C++ unsigned long long binary value and signifies the length, in bits, of encoded characters. Following the length are three values, each is a bit field of that length. offset_mask - defines the occurrence of non-printable characters within the min,max of print_mask range_mask - defines the occurrence of the most popular 50% of printable characters print_mask - defines the occurrence value of printable characters The structure of profiles has changed from the op of this question. Most likely I will try to factorize or compress these values in the long-term instead of starting out with ranges after reading more. I have to write some of the core functionality for these main reasons. It has to fit into a particular event architecture we are using, Better understanding of character encoding. I'm about to need it. Integrating into non-linear design is excluding many libraries without special hooks. I'm unsure if there is a standard, cross-encoding mechanism for communicating such data already. I'm just starting to look into how chardet might do profiling as suggested by @amon. The Unicode BOM would be easily enough (for my current project) if all encodings were Unicode. Of course ideally, one would like to support all encodings, but I'm not asking about implementation - only the general case. How can these profiles be efficiently populated, to produce a set of bitmasks which we can use to match strings with common characters in multiple languages? If you have any editing suggestions please feel free, I am a lightweight when it comes to localization, which is why I'm trying to reach out to the more experienced. Any caveats you may be able to help with will be appreciated.

• Generate TFTP Content on the fly?

  I know this isn't the purpose of TFTP, but I'm working in an environment where a lot of different types of devices pull provisioning info from a TFTP server. What I'm developing is a provisioning system that tracks and maintains device configurations, and I would like to have the requested files generated on the fly, much like you could do with any web application. Yes some of these devices can support HTTP for provisioning, but not all of them do, and we want things to be consistent. Are there any TFTP daemons that can provide something analogous to CGI?
