  • Is Windows 7 Home Premium edition sufficient for software development?

    Is the Windows 7 Home Premium sufficient for software development? Development would be in Visual Studio 2010. I'm on a budget so would rather purchase 'Home Premium' rather than 'Professional' or 'Ultimate'. The Microsoft site says there is next to nothing functionality wise between them that developers would miss. Can anyone confirm or deny? BTW. Does it come with a version of IIS? I realize that this is not a technical question. But it is important to me and I'm sure other developers wonder the same thing. Cheers, -- Lee

  • Email with extra '.com' behind sender email address

    Currently I had a situation where I sent an email to [email protected], but when I receive mail from [email protected], it showed as [email protected], with extra '.com' behind the email address, this just happen within this week. Before this, I didn't change any setting, currently I am using Outlook 2010. When I checked the email in webmail, it also showed it as [email protected]. It seem that it has nothing to do with Outlook. However, I also tried on Thunderbird 16.0.1, but still the problem is the same. Has anyone experienced this before? Is the problem caused by the sender or receiver?   • How do I resolve "conflicting accounts" in google apps without breaking links to online photos on picasa?

    I have been using google apps for some time, and only recently learned I have what google calls "conflicting accounts" which is creating a problem I haven't been able to resolve. Turns out that the apps account really only covers email, google docs, and the calendar and not other features like picasa, blogger, youtube etc. and at some point they gave me a non-apps google account with my same (proprietary non-gmail) email address for the additional apps. This is the "conflicting account." I had noticed that I sometimes had to come in through another door when I went back and forth, between docs, picasa, and mail let's say, but never understood why since it was the same username and password and I didn't get any communication about it at the time. Google is now in the process of giving google apps users access to the additional apps and providing instructions for consolidating the two accounts. But if I want to move my picasa site into the new apps structure I have to download my albums and re-synch them. This would be disastrous for me as I have hundreds of photos embedded in my websites, and new web addresses would break all the connections. The alternative seems to be to rename my "personal" (non-apps) accounts as described at http://www.google.com/support/a/bin/answer.py?answer=185186: Users with conflicting Google Accounts can easily resolve their conflicts by renaming their personal Google Accounts, and the data in their personal accounts will remain safe and accessible to them. Here’s how a user can rename their personal Google Account: * Step 1: Visit www.google.com/accounts and sign in with your personal Google Account * Step 2: Click ‘Change email’ under ‘Personal Settings’ * Step 3: Enter a different email address where you can receive mail, enter your password, and click ‘Save email address’ * Step 4: Check your other email If your users don’t have different email addresses where they can receive mail, they can resolve the conflict by renaming their personal Google Accounts to @gmail.com addresses instead. Sounds easy enough, right? I gave them a gmail address. The wizard said "sorry you can't use a gmail account for this" --which contradicts the last paragraph above but ok, I switched to a new email address I just created for one of my domains. I can send email back and forth between this account and my google apps account with no problem. But when I try to use it as a replacement on the "personal" side I always get "The password you gave is incorrect." I have tried it over and over and know the password is correct. Since I like to get all my emails though one web interface I initially had the new email set up as an add-on to my google apps email account, but noting that the instructions said the "personal account" email could not be associated with any other gmail account I took it off and went back to accessing it via horde so there would be no conflict there, which seemed to make no difference. I can't figure out why it won't accept the password. Does anyone have any thoughts about that? or suggestions for another way to resolve my picasa problem? any help at all is greatly appreciated.     I am trying to set up postfix on my ubuntu server in order to send emails via my isp's smtp server. Replacing the ,  with \r\n is easy enough, as is the first replacement: Replace (^|\r\n)(\S+\s)([^,\r\n]*),\s With $1$2$3\r\n$2 But capturing the other names and applying the same prefix is what is eluding me today. Any suggestions?

    I have a database (for tracking email statistics) that has grown to hundreds of megabytes, and I've been looking for ways to reduce it. It seems that the main reason for the large file size is that the same strings tend to be repeated in thousands of rows. The corresponding cell in the EmailInfo table contains an orphaned ToAddrRef value. If you do the INSERTs one at a time, you'll see that Alice's ID in the AddressLookup table changes! It appears that this behavior is documented: An ON CONFLICT clause may be specified as part of an UPDATE or INSERT action within the body of the trigger. However if an ON CONFLICT clause is specified as part of the statement causing the trigger to fire, then conflict handling policy of the outer statement is used instead. So the "REPLACE" in the top-level "INSERT OR REPLACE" statement is overriding the critical "INSERT OR IGNORE" in the trigger program. Is there a way I can make it work the way that I wanted?

Moreover, new elements can be added in any order later, so I would like to sort them by value using C preprocessor or maybe there is any compilers flag (GCC)?   • Re. copying movie from USB card reader back to my camera

I originally copied a short movie from my camera onto the computer via a USB card reader and then copied it back onto the camera via the same USB card reader along with some photos. The photos have copied back fine but the movie, although it's showing to have copied, can't be seen. Any reason for this? Thanks

    I am trying to add a domain user. I am doing the following. Expand Security Right click on Logins Select New Login... Login name select search Click on location and select entire directory Type username Click checkname The name goes underlined and add some more info Click OK Click OK I then get the following error: I have found http://support.microsoft.com/kb/324321. The Login does exist There is no Duplicate security identifiers Authentication failure I don't think is happening as I can browse AD Case sensitivity should not be the problem as I am doing the checkname and it is correcting it. Not a Local account Name resolution again I can see the AD I have rebooted the server (VM) and the issue is still happening. Any ideas?   • CentOS: OpsCenter does not see other node's agent

    I'm new with Apache Cassandra. I am trying to install a little sample cluster using two CentOS server. I followed the documentation (Tarball installation) and the nodes are up. However, when I go to OpsCenter, the nodes cannot see each other's agent (there is always "1 of 2 agents connected"..I tried to fix, but nothing change). I tried both to disable and enable SSL, I tried to set the incoming_interface in opscenter.conf, I tried almost everything the network suggested to me, but the problem persisted. Now, I have SSL enabled, and agent log tell me: "There was an error when attempting to load stored rollups." Is there someone that could help me, please?

    Audible Books fails to install into iTunes I am using a desktop with Windows 7 64 bit. I have been downloading Audible Books for 3 years and have 85 installed. Several months ago downloading them did not put them in iTunes and the system wants me to import them manually. You start with "C\Program Files\iTunes\ and add two lines..... I know I need to choose the destination for 64 bit, but I do not see iTunes and I do not know how to put this title into iTunes if I can locate it? The folks at Audible wasted a lot of my time but were zero help! How can I get these books into my computer?

    I have a Fancybox (or more accurately) a number of fancy boxes on an asp.net page. My Fancybox (jquery plugin) works fine until a postback occurs on the page then it refuses to work. Any thoughts? Anyone experienced similar behaviour? UPDATE : Some Code.. I have a databound repeater with a fancybox on each repeating item. UPDATE : It's not a problem with the flash.. It is not a problem with the flash as i've tried it without the flash, it wont even pop a window with a simple message in.     Question In a Reporting Services Report, How do I filter a second drop down list of cars to only show cars whose ManufacturerId is equal the selected Manufacturer (from the first drop down list)? Report Datasets I have 2 datasets. Dataset 1. A list of Manufacturers. From a stored procedure Report_Manufacturers_P Dataset 2. A list of Cars, including a column called Manufacturers id. From a stored procedure Report_Cars_P Report Parameters On the Report I have 2 Parameters. Parameter 1. ManufacturerId. Set from A drop down list of Manufacturers (DataSet 1). Parameter 2. CarId. Set from A drop down list of Cars (DataSet 2). I've tried.. Creating another sproc called Report_Manufacturer_Cars_P that takes the ManufacturerId as an integer and returns a list of cars made by that manufacturer. Any Ideas.     Hi all, I'm having some trouble looping over a HashMap to print out it's values to the screen. Could someone double check my code to see what I'm doing wrong. I can't seem to find anything wrong but there must be something. In a servlet, I am adding the following to the request: Map<String, String> facetValues = new HashMap<String, String>(); // Filling the map req.setAttribute(facetField.getName(), facetValues); In one case "facetField.getName()" evaluates to "discipline". So in my page I have the following: <ui:repeat value="${requestScope.discipline}" var="item"> <li>Item: <c:out value="${item}"/>, Key: <c:out value="${item.key}"/>, Value: <c:out value="${item.item}"/></li> </ui:repeat> The loop is ran once but all the outputs are blank?!? I would have at least expected something in item if it's gone over the loop once. Checking the debug popup for Facelets, discipline is there and on the loop. Printing it to the screen results in something that looks like a map to me (I've shortened the output) : {300=0, 1600=0, 200=0, ... , 2200=0} I've also tried with a c:forEach but I'm getting the same results. So does anyone have any ideas where I'm going wrong? Thanks for any input, Lee

    I could do with some pointers, code examples or references that may help me do the following in an msbuild file to help speed up the deployment process.. This scenario involves getting a developers 'local' version onto a 'development' server.. Increment a developers local Web Applications Assembly version number Publish a developers local Web Application files somewhere .rar the publsihed files or folder into the format v[IncrementedAssemblyNumber].rar Copy the .rar to somewhere Backup (.rar) the existing live website folder (located elsewhere) in the format Pre_v[IncrementedAssemblyNumber].rar Move the backed up .rar to a /Backup folder. Overwrite the development web files with the published local web files Should be simple for all those MSBUILD Gurus out there. Like I said, answers or 'Good and applicable' links would be much appreciated. Also i'm thinking of getting one of the MSbuild books. From what I can tell there are 2, possibly 3 contenders. I am not using TFS. Can anyone recommend a book for beginning MSBUILD? Ideally from people that have read more than one book on the subject. Cheers, -- Lee

    Assume I have a budget of $10 (any integer) and I want to distribute it over records which have rank field with varying needs. Example: rank Req. Fulfilled? 1 $3 Y 2 $4 Y 3 $2 Y 4 $3 N Those ranks from 1 to 3 should be fulfilled because they are within budget. whereas, the one ranked 4 should not. I want an SQL query to solve that.   • Really Need a Facebook App to post to Facebook Page Wall?

    Hi, I'm using the Facebook API Graph (C# & ASP.NET) to try to dynamically post to a Facebook page I created. Looking at the code samples floating around.. they suggest creating a Facebook App first (which I have done).. However.. I have 3 different pages I want to post to.. Do I need to create an app for each? (I want to post different things to the 3 pages, not the same posts to each) I just want messages & links to appear as Wall posts. I'm not bothered about having an 'app' that has 'canvas' that is placed in an IFrame. Question : So do I still need to write one or more Facebook Apps to post to my 3 different Facebook pages?? Where I am so far.. I can pass in my apps credentials and get back the access_token. But my posts don't appear to be going anywhere. I'd rather drop the 'facebook application /canvas' approach if possible If I can post directly to a wall (For the above reasons). Oh, and before you ask. I don't want to post to my Apps Wall page, I want to post to my other pages (Unless I have to post to my Apps Wall page first?). I'm sure loads of people have the same questions..   • How to design app to be modular / support plugins

    I'm currently in the process of refactoring my webplayer so that we'll be more easily able to run it on our other internet radio stations. Much of the setup between these players will be very similar, however, some will need to have different UI plugins / other plugins. Currently in the webplayer I do something like this in it's init(): _this.ui = new UI(); _this.ui.playlist = new Playlist(); _this.ui.channelDropdown = new ChannelDropdown(); _this.ui.timecode = ne Timecode(); etc etc This works fine but that blocks me into requiring those objects at run time. What I'd like to do is be able to add those based on the stations needs. Basically my question is, do I need to add some kind of "addPlugin()" functionality here? And if I do that, do I need to constantly check from my WebPlayer object if that plugin exists before it attempts to use it? Like... if (_hasPlugin('playlist')) this.plugins.playlist.add(track); I apologize if some of this might not be clear... really trying to get my head wrapped around all of this. I feel I'm closer but I'm still stuck. Any advice on how I should proceed with this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance, Lee

    Jack Dawson Jack Dawson is the homeless drifter in Titanic. At one point in the movie he says, “I figure life’s a gift, and I don’t intend on wasting it.” He is happy to wander wherever life takes him. He works himself from place to place, making just enough money to make it to his next adventure. The “Jack Dawson” developer clings on to any new technology as the ‘next big thing’, and will find ways to shoe-horn it in to places where it is not a fit. He is very appealing to the other developers because they want to try the newest techniques and tools too, He will only stay until the new technology either bores him or becomes problematic. Jack will also be hard to find once the technology has been implemented, because he will be on to the next shiny thing. However, having a Jack Dawson on your team can be beneficial. Jack can be a great ally when attempting to convince a stodgy, corporate entity to upgrade. Jack usually has an encyclopedic recall of all the new features of the technology upgrade and is more than happy to interject them in any conversation. Tom Smykowski Tom is the neurotic employee in Office Space, and is deathly afraid of being fired. He will do only what is necessary to keep the status quo. He believes as long as nothing changes, his job is safe. He will scoff at anything new and be the naysayer during any change initiative. Tom can be useful in off-setting Jack Dawson. Jack will constantly be pushing for change and Tom will constantly be fighting it. When you see that Jack is getting kind of bored with a new technology and Tom has finally stopped wetting himself at the mere mention of it, then it is probably the sweet spot of beginning to implement that new technology (providing it is the right tool for the job). Ray Consella Ray is the guy who built the Field of Dreams. He took a risk. Sometimes he screwed it up, but he knew he didn’t want to end up regretting not attempting it. He constantly doubted himself, but he knew he had to keep going. Granted, he was doing what the voices in his head were telling him to do, but my point is he was driven to do something that most people considered crazy. Even when his friends, his wife and even he told himself he was crazy, somewhere inside himself, he knew it was the right thing to do. These are the innovators. These are the Bill Gates and Steve Jobs of the world. The take risks, they fail, they learn and the get better. Obviously, this kind of person thrives in start-ups and smaller companies, but that is due to their natural aversion to bureaucracy. They want to see their ideas put into motion quickly, and withdrawn quickly if it doesn’t work. Short feedback cycles are essential to Ray. He wants to know if his idea is working or not. He wants to modify or reverse his idea if it is not working or makes things worse. These are the agilistas. May I always be one.

    Hey all. I am still here. Still kickin’. I’ve been swamped with work and community stuff. But I wanted to post about some of the things going on. Just finished up Twin Cities Code Camp 8, and had a blast! Always good to see these guys. First of all, up-coming speaking engagements: Iowa Code Camp – May 1st in Iowa City, IA [more info] DevLink – August 5-7 in Nashville, TN [more info]   Plus I am organizing a second developer’s conference in Kansas City. Kansas City Developer’s Conference (KCDC) – June 19th in Kansas City [more info]   I will also be doing Lunch & Learns for my company in April and May at JCCC: April 29th, May 12th and May 27th at Johnson County Community College in Kansas City.   So May, June and August are covered. I may just take July off, I could use a break after KCDC is over.

  • Twin Cities Code Camp 8 Retrospective

    I just got back (a few hours ago) from Minneapolis, where I was speaking at the Twin Cities Code Camp 8. I’d never been to a Twin Cities Code Camp, and I have always heard such great things, so I submitted and got accepted to speak. The conference (what I got to see) was great. My talk was pretty short on people, but there are many reasons for that. First, I spoke opposite Donn Felker (speaking about developing for Android) and Keith Dahlby (speaking about Dynamic .NET). So of course, my talk is going to be empty. How could I compete with that? Plus, my talk was about software process improvement, specifically about how our process has evolved. Maybe not the smartest idea to submit to talk about software process at a developer’s conference. The people who DID attend however, seemed to really enjoy the talk. There was good interaction and good, thoughtful questions. So the attendees seemed engaged. I actually did get a chance to go to one session. I went and saw Javier Lozano talk about Open source tools for ASP.NET MVC. I am hip-deep in MVC stuff right now and getting up to speed on MVC 2 as well. I learned about MVC Turbine, Javier’s Open Source project. I will definitely be adding it to my MVC arsenal. Thanks Javier! I did forget my AC adapter for my laptop and got a little lost in Minneapolis on my way to get one from MicroCenter Saturday morning, but other than that, it was a great trip. It’s a long drive, but seeing all the guys and getting two Nut & Honey rolls from Roly Poly in Eden Prarie for lunch on Saturday made the trip totally worth it. I look forward to seeing what Jason & Chris come up with for next year! Thanks for having me guys!
