  • How can you tell a USB cable version?

    Here is a question a student asked me in one of my A+ certification classes: How can you tell a USB cable version? I honestly dont know the answer, I cant find one either. USB cables are rated for versions 1, 1.1, 2, and now 3. I have seen their versions on the packaging, but never marked on the cable itself. Since the respective versions are manufactured differently, there is a difference between them. So, how can you tell? On Wikipedia: USB cables v.2 and earlier do use a "twisted pair" method, but doesnt specify if the cables themselves are the same or different. Is the cable rating system for v.2 and earlier just marketing hype?

  • UBUNTU's Network Connection Manger can't detect Huawei ETS2051 Modem device!

    I have a modem device called Huawei ETS2051 and the Network Connection Manger can't detect it, but when I use Gnome-PPP it work fine but the problem is when I use Gnome-PPP; apps like Ubuntu software Center Can't reconice that's Iam connecting to the Internet so the app is just act like it's offline while other apps like web browsers and IM's work good under Gnome-PPP. any way what I want is to have a Full Ubuntu experince by making The Network Connection Manger detect my ETS2051. I have another 3G USB modem and The Network Connection Manger detect it and it's work just fine but the internet price for this one is high and I can't effort it so am count on that ETS2051 modem as you can see for it's low price and stable internet speed that satesfy my needs. More information: Gnome-PPP is a GUI for wvdial. the ETS2051 modem use a serial USB port. I have a Windows driver CD for the device. I have also find This qustion about the software Center acting like it's offline around wvdial and there's this launchpad bug. and am really insest to use Ubuntu Software Center so please no other software manger apps recomendation... I've also this Genius ColorPage HR6X Slim scanner that's Ubuntu can't detect it, so if you interset you can check and answer the qustion from here...

Between the VGA port location and my hand size, I knock the cable out often. I am working on getting a docking station, but not sure when it would be ordered (work-related).     Issue Pictured overhead projector setup does not work. #1 - #2 - #3 - Phone. All cables are tested and work! The issue is the HDMI connection between cable #2 and #3. With all other cables, the screen will automatically be displayed onto the projector screen. No extra work needed. With the pictured setup, the smartphone screen is not displayed onto the projector screen. What is the issue with the HDMI connection?? Background We recently had to do presentations at work (school), but the administration only provided VGA means of hooking up to it. Mostly likely reason probably dealt with cost. Anyways, there are several teachers that have brand new Samsung Series 9 ultrabooks (or similar). You know, the ones without VGA support. So I bought an adapter for those ultrabooks. When I do sudo wvdial cdma, the IPs and DNS addresses are also allocated but I still cant access internet.   • Cable management techniques

    How do you manage the giant jungle of cables behind your PC? When you have 2 or more PCs next to each other, you wind up with this giant mess cables that's a pain in the neck to clean especially when both computers are running 24/7 and any fidgeting with the cables is likely to cause data loss and/or angry users. So far I've tried masking tape, cable ties and plain old string but none have been very effective. The masking tape kept the cables in place, but over time they ended up leaving this awful sticky residue on the sides of the cables that just won't come off gets all over your fingers and is horrible horrible horrible. I have nightmares about that stuff. We used cable ties and 'folded' up some of the longer cables so that they weren't any longer than they needed to be, but this meant that the position of some of our devices like the keyboard and the mouse were essentially 'fixed' until we removed the ties. The string didn't work much differently and required that we tie them properly or risk it coming loose. I would switch to a wireless keyboard and mouse, but I don't want to have to deal with the added expense of batteries, even the rechargable ones. Plus I don't want them to die on me at a crucial moment (happened to me once while playing Firearms _<). How do large offices and data centers manage their masses of cable?

  • VGA Cable gave me an Electric Shock when connecting a Projector to a Laptop

    Yesterday I was trying to connect a Viewsonic Projector to my Samsung RC420 laptop... I followed this steps: I Plugged the Projector to a power source, in parallel I did the same thing with the laptop. Then I turned on the laptop, but not the Projector (this one turns a bright light when is connected to a power source). I put the VGA Cable to the Projector (this one being still turned down) and then when I was getting close to the VGA port of the Laptop... BAM! A big spark appear between the port and the cable! Immediately the whole electricity of my floor went off. A part of the port in my laptop kind of... melted down. It seems to be where the spark started. The same thing happened to the part of the cable involved. Now I'm using the laptop, and it seems that there is no problem in it, I haven't connect anything to the VGA port yet. And the projector is still working to, well... it turns on, and I haven't connect anything yet too. The projector was connected to the power source by a homemade electric extension.

  • Has the hardware in my modem gone bad?

    I contacted CenturyLink about my modem recently and received useless and unrelated information. The problem seems to be that the modem will no longer save settings, the web interface is unusable except in internet explorer for some reason, and the modem keeps resetting. CenturyLink claimed it had to do with signal strength but I checked and it is currently between good and outstanding according to this. All of the lights remain green even when it starts acting up and I lose internet and shortly before it crashes and reboots. Does anyone have any idea what is going on or what I can do to fix it? (Asking CenturyLink again is obviously not going to help.) Update 1: Accessing the syslog from the web interface causes a crash.     In the last few days I've noticed poor internet performance. Today I ran a speed test and the results were abysmal... 10mb down and 0.18mb up (which really hurt, because I was trying to RDC from another location). I pay for 30mb down and 5mb up. Latency was at 128ms. Before calling my ISP to give them a verbal lashing, I unplugged the modem and plugged it back in. I pretty much got top speed after doing that (with a latency of 7ms). I'm the type of guy that likes to know what goes on under the hood. So what's the deal? What mysterious powers does restarting give to my modem?

    Can anyone suggest a software tool (preferably under Windows XP or later) that would launch an application or script in response to a phone call being received on a landline phone line connected to a data modem on the same PC? or, better, in response to a sequence of touch-tones being played over such a phone line. This would allow, for example, using the telephone to manipulate firewall settings so as to create another layer of security in connection with remote internet access to that computer. I seem to recall seeing tools to do this sort of thing in the days before broadband internet access, when there was more attention to various tips and tricks for the dial-up modem, but a few attempts at Google hasn't turned anything up.

  • How do I keep my Huawei E3131 3G modem from unmounting?

    I need help getting my Huawei E3131 modem to (consistently) work. I am currently running Ubuntu 12.04.2 and 3G dongles have worked many times before. However, my newly acquired Huawei E3131 is causing problems. When plugged in, Ubuntu detects the device as a CD-ROM and a modem. I can browse the dongle's contents using Nautilus and Network Manager is able to configure and work the dongle out-of-the-box. I can even get to surf. However, within minutes, the connection drops and the CD-ROM is unmounted. I wait about 15 seconds, then the CD-ROM mounts again and Network Manager is able to connect again with short-lived surfing. Rinse, lather and repeat. It's strange that the device mounts as a CD-ROM, but works as a modem, too, suggesting that mode switching happens somewhere. It's not a signal coverage problem, either because I tested the same SIM card using 3 other different dongles (2 ZTEs and another Huawei) and it is only this E3131 that has this problem. If pertinent, the other dongles weren't being detected as CD-ROMs. Output of lsusb Bus 001 Device 002: ID 8087:0020 Intel Corp.     I'm trying to get my Haier CE682 EVDO modem, model number 201e:1022 to work in ubuntu 12.04 kernel 3.5.0-030500-generic #201207211835 .   • How can I guess if a USB cable will power my devices?

    I've had problems with one long (4 meter) USB Mini-B to USB Type-A cable not being able to boot a 2.5'' external hard disc due to not supplying enough current. On top of that, the cable used a Type-A to Mini-B adapter for the Mini-B part, which probably made things worse. Three different shorter cables I got around made the hard disk work without extra current, so it was definitively the cable's fault. However, if I plugged the hard disk to the power, and used the long cable just for data it worked. Here is some related information on powering through USB cables: http://www.girr.org/mac_stuff/usb_stuff.html I have not any long cables that don't have an intermediary Type-A to Mini-B adapter to try them out. My question is: is there a way to guess if a cable will provide enough power for charge/disk drive power? Is it related to the length of the cable, to the build quality of the cable, or the fact that uses intermediary adapters?

    I'm looking at allowing internet access for only a few scattered users on a school network. One method I'm considering is using 802.1x authentication for the modem. Of course there are simpler options like only allowing specific IP or mac addresses, but policy requires something more secure than this. So, are there any modems with 802.1x wired authentication? All my searching on this yields info about wireless.
