• Looking for parallel programming problem

  I am trying to come up with a problem that is easily solvable in a parallel manner and that requires communication between threads for a test. I also am trying to avoid problems that require require random waits, which rules out dining philosophers and producer-consumer (bounded buffer), two of the classics. My goal is for the student to be able to write the program in less than 20-30 minutes in front of a computer not knowing of the problem beforehand. (This is to prevent preparation more than to come up with something novel.) I am trying to stress the communication aspect of the program, though the multi-threaded nature is also important. Does anyone have some ideas? Edit: I'm using Google Go for the language and testing comprehension of the goroutines/channels combo vs an actors library that I authored.

• Is there an equivalent to Windows To Go for personal use?

  Windows To Go is one of the most exciting Windows 8 features to me - the ability to pack up your desktop environment and take it with you anywhere is extremely appealing. Unfortunately, it's only included with Windows 8 Enterprise, which you can't buy for individual use. Is there an equivalent that works for Windows 8 Professional? I would be satisfied by either a third-party program that does the same thing, or some workaround to enable Windows To Go for non-Enterprise versions. I'm aware of various WinPE-based live environments, and that's not what I'm looking for. I want the ability to run a full Windows 8 environment off of a flash drive that I can take anywhere.

• How do I add the go language to gitg's list of viewable sources?

  Hoping a 'git' guru will help out here. I am just beginning to "git" for the first time and have (among other things :-) ) git and gitg installed from Ubuntu 10.4 / AMD64 distribution (ie. maybe not 'latest' version but not ancient). I am trying to look at the go code I've committed via gitg and in the "tree tab" it says :Cannot display file content as text. However, the "details tab" shows the diffs of the same file just fine. I know gitg's "tree tab" is working because I can use the tree view on *.c / *.html / *.txt etc just fine. Is there a way to tweak gitg into understanding that "*.go" is just text? A little more context: Installed gitg version is 0.0.5 - ie a version behind latest - 0.0.6 - source of which I am looking thru now. I do have a working /usr/share/gtksourceview-2.0/language-specs/ go.lang. It works just fine as highlighter in gedit. It appears that gitg may require displayable files to have a mime type of "text/plain", so I added that to go.lang No joy. gitg still fails on *.go I'm relatively sure the fix is simple, just don't know where to look.

Usually I would achieve this by adding overflow:auto to the container, but if I do that it breaks the hack. Is it possible to achieve a height and still use this hack?   I have a setup where I'm running Ubuntu 11.10 as a VirtualBox guest under a Windows 7 host, behind a restrictive corporate firewall. I have set up NAT from the host port 22 to Ubuntu's port 22; IT inform me that they have opened port 22 outbound for the host machine's IP address. I have run ssh-keygen -t rsa, and am trying to test the setup by connecting to github and another known ssh server. In both cases the connect is refused with ssh_exchange_identification: Connection closed by remote host. Full -vvv log is below. Is this possibly still due to the corporate firewall? If so, what else might I need to request from them?
