• Removing (Presumably) Extraneous Network Adapters from Device Manager (eg WAN Miniport)

  Can anyone shed some light on the default items in the Network Adapters branch of the Windows Device Manager? In addition to the network card, there are always a bunch of other things that I cannot find any useful information on such as RAS Asynch Adapter and all the WAN Miniports (IKEv2, IP(v6), L2TP, Network Monitor, PPPOE, PPTP, SSTP). I would like to trim it down and uninstall whatever possible but cannot find out exactly what these items are responsible for (and therefore whether or not they are needed on my system). Most of the pages found with Google are either people trying to fix an error with such an item or someone asking what it is and being given an unhelpful, pat response like “just leave them alone” or “they’re necessary”. I highly doubt that is the case and I’m certain that at least some items can be removed because even if they become necessary in the future they can be added again (for example installing Network Monitor or Protowall reinstalls the miniport drivers anyway).

• Several devices in Device Manager have Code 3 error

  One of our users' machines (Dell Optiplex 380 running Windows 7 32-bit) is having a weird driver issue. A bunch of devices have Error Code 3: The driver for this device might be corrupted, or your system may be running low on memory or other resources. (Code 3) The system isn't low on memory (only 1GB in use out of whatever the max for 32-bit is.) Here's a screenshot of the affected devices: I tried reinstalling the chipset and audio drivers to no avail. I have no idea what prompted it, and I'm not sure how the basic Windows Generic PnP Monitor driver could even be corrupted. What might be causing this error?

• Scalling connected lines

  Hello, I have some kind of a shape consisting of vertical, horizontal and diagonal lines. I have starting X,Y and ending X,Y (this is my input - just 2 points defining a line) of each line and I would like to make the whole shape scalable (just by changing the value of a scale ratio variable), so that I can still preserve the proper connection of the lines and the proportions as well. Just for getting a better idea of what I mean: it'd be as if I had the same lines in a vector editor. Would that be possible with an algorithm, and could you please, give me another possible solution if there is no such algorithm ? Thank you very much in advance!

• USB sound device not recognized

  I have a USB sound device that used to work back when I ran other versions of Ubuntu. Now I can only partially see the device. I have tried many things I saw in Google searches, but none solve my problem. cat /proc/asound/cards sees the device as card 0 aplay -l shows C-Media USB Audio as card 0 alsamixer sees the device asoundconf list does not show the device sound preferences shows no hardware asoundconf-gtk set the device to pulseaudio, but fails with python errors ending in ValueError: too many values to unpack in the function set_default_card. I think this is the cause of my problem. The device is a Sony virtual phones wireless headphone amplifier.

  How do I find out which kernel module (as seen by typing lsmod) is servicing a particular device in /dev ? In other words, say I have a device, /dev/mouse0 and I want to find out which kernel module is installed to service that device. How do I do that? Another way to look at this is, some loaded kernel modules associate themselves with a device in /dev. How does one find out which device(s) a module is "attached" to?

  As I understood after reading the chapter related to The Linux Device Model in the Linux Device Drivers 3rd Edition, when a new device is configured, the kernel follows more or less this sequence: The Device is registered in the driver core (device_register(), what includes device initialization) A kobject is registered in the device model It provokes a hotplug event Bus and drivers are checked to see which one matches with the device Probe Device is binded to the driver My main doubt is, in step 1, when is device_register() called and what info should be yet in the device struct? Is it called by the bus to which the device is connected? Any example in the code? Have I misunderstood something? :)

  Hey guys I actually got an Windows/Java Question. I've got an plugged in Device which I want to access via Java. Normaly u can access an e.g. USB-Stick via the Drive letter... but this Tablet is displayed by Windows as an "Portable Device"... which means, that the Path is sth. like "Computer\Archos 5S" and there is no Drive letter. I want to access a File on this Device via Java, but I am not able to figure out the correct Path to it. There is a similar Question out there, but without a productive answear. Or is there an other way to access this Device via Java? thanks in advance ripei

• BSOD Before Windows Will Loads - Graphics Related

  Alright deep breath here: (Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit btw) Today I installed Star Craft 2 Beta. After trying to log in, it had some issues where it said my device stopped working (referring to my video device I have to imagine). After I force quit the game there were some random "hot" (various colors if i remember correctly) pixels on the screen. I decided to reboot and try again with similar results. I figured that maybe my display drivers could stand to be updated (I don't frequently update them as I don't often run into problems). I went out to nVidia's website and grabbed the latest drivers for Windows 7 64 bit GeForce 9 series. (I have SLi-ed 9800 GTs). Everything seemed to install fine and I performed the restart. This is when things went from bad (can't play SC2 beta ;) ) to worse (can't boot into windows!). Initially the very first splash screen - I think it's the bios splash screen - had lines of colored pixels covering it. It then displayed a screen that had lots of "(" on it. After that it showed the normal windows 7 splash screen as if it were going to load into Windows. Before getting much further, it BSODed on me. It was a 0x0000003B stop error. At nvlddmkm.sys. A little digging let verified that this was a problem with an nVidia graphics device, not a real shocker. Windows decided it would try to help me diagnose the problem, which it's only answer to was a System Restore, which did nothing to alleviate the problem. I was able to boot up fine in safe mode and was not able to roll back the driver, however I did uninstall the driver and reboot. I still had the graphical anomalies during the first two screens (same colored "."'s and weird "("'s), but there was NOT a stop error. Windows loaded up, found a default driver for the device and installed it and I restarted to let it load - and had yet another BSOD Stop error. Repeat driver uninstall, this time I reloaded the same version (I think it's possible that I was running a 32 bit version or a vista versus windows 7 version, but I don't have that information handy) of the nVidia driver from their website. Restart, same anomalies, same Stop Error. I am at a loss - At this point all I can think is that the firmware for the Video cards got fried or there's actual damage to the cards which I sincerely hope is not the case but the sooner I know the better. Any insight into what I might be able to do to troubleshoot/fix this problem would be most helpful. Attached below is a dump from DxDiag.   I'm working on a hopefully unrelated question question and I've got to a strange situation. First: I know very little about the very low level hardware kernal storage driver magix, so I'm hoping a) someone can help and b) someone can explain it to me better. I've been trying a dozen different configurations of my 2x500GB SATA drives over the past few hours involving switching between ACHI/IDE/RAID in my bios; After each attempt I've reset the bios option, booted into a live CD, deleting partitions and rewriting partition tables left on the drives. Now, however, I've been sitting with a /dev/mapper/nvidia_XXXXXXX1 that seems to be impossible to kill! its the only 'partition' that i see in the Ubuntu install (but I can see the others in parted) but it is only the size of one of the drives, and I know I did not set any RAID levels other than RAID0. Anyone have any ideas how I can kill this and get back to just two independent IDE drives? Or can anyone convince me of a reason to go the AHCI route? Many thanks in advance.

  Hi! I'm and unlucky owner of and Acer 7720G laptop which, like many in its category, has receiver for a proprietary infra red remote control device (which I did not receive with my laptop!) . Now my problem is that the receiver is detected as Microsoft eHome MCIR Keyboard, Microsoft eHome MCIR 109 Keyboard and Microsoft eHome Remote Control Keyboard keys. My problem is that this driver has incompatibilities with some programs I use like for example DosBox. When these devices are installed, they cause DosBox to incorrectly detect some keyboard buttons. The workaround is to remove or disable the 3 hardware devices. Unfortunately, I the disable option is grayed out and when I delete them, they are reinstalled on next restart. Is there any way to hack windows in order to prevent their installation? I was thinking about locating the drivers these devices use, but they are buried somewhere in windows installation and I don't have enough experience to find them, so I'm asking you for help.

  I have 2 graphics cards, the output from the lspci: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV770 [Radeon HD 4850] 02:00.0 VGA compatible controller: ATI Technologies Inc RV710 [Radeon HD 4350] I have one monitor connected to the 4850 and 2 connected to the 4350. However when I go into System Preferences Monitors the only monitor shown is the one connected to the 4850. Is there something I need to enable for it to be able to use the other card? I have checked other questions, but either they have no answers or they told about previous Ubuntu version with 3.0.x kernels. A USB 2.0 device will work in the USB 3.0 ports. A USB 3.0 device will work (at USB 2.0 speeds) in the USB 2.0 ports. The problem, as I wrote, is between USB 3.0 devices and USB 3.0 ports. I have my USB 3.0 ports configured without legacy support via the BIOS (the way they should be, I suppose). But I also have tried to configure them with XHCI Preboot mode disabled. Have any one solved a similar problem? Thanks in advance.

• USB device changes using udev and D-Bus

  I am trying to get a list of currently plugged in USB devices in Ubuntu 10.10 and monitor changes that happen, like devices being plugged in or out using udev and D-Bus. I'm fairly new to programming using D-Bus. I saw one example: "Linux: How to detect is usb keyboard is plugged and unplugged". Problem is that it uses HAL and I know that HAL is deprecated. I found some working code, but it's working only with storage devices such as USB sticks, media players or CD-ROM drives. I want the whole thing: mice, keyboards, USB cameras, chargers; anything that is plugged in to the USB. How can I listen D-Bus events for any USB device plug and unplug? • No rear audio when front jack is connected

  I have Ubuntu 14.04 64bit dual booted. When I connect something on front audio jack then rear audio is not working. I have tried changing analolog-output-headphones.conf file. After changing that alsamixer showing that both centre and surround not muted with full volum.   Hi Forum, We are developing a game application for Blackberry, which will have multi player option to let two or more player compete against each other. We have implemented the logic for that and already two or more player are able to play the game simultaneously on single device. Now we want to upgrade our application so that two or more user can compete each other playing from different device and different locations. Can anyone please help me by providing me the way (or code) to achieve this (communicating two blackberry devices over the air to access single session programmaticaly)? I found the code to connect two device using Bluetooth but as the player may situated in different geographic regions we need to achieve this using over the air connection. Thanks in advance.
