• RAID 5 RECONSTRUCT with RAID Reconstructor

  I have Dell Poweredge server 2600 with Raid 5 in 3 hard drive Scsi 36gb each, it was fail to boot sinc the third drive is offline. I attached Sata card adapter to Sata hard drive and install OS SERVER 2003 to it, downloaded drivers for Raid and everything goes fine when I use recovery data software called "GetDataBack" from here http://www.runtime.org/data-recovery-software.htm but the problem that not all data recovered, I am still looking for importants data with about 5 GB size. I have another software called "RAID Reconstructor" from "http://www.runtime.org/raid.htm" I thought if I run it to reconstruct that will help to recover more data and put the third drive to be Online but I am afraid that might erase the current data in the other drives. Please I need your advise in how I could retrive the remaining data? Thanks

• Scripting an automated SQLServer 2008 DR move

  Hi All We use the built in logshipping in SQLServer to logship to our DR site but once in a month do a DR test which requires us to move back and forth between our Live and BAckup servers. We run multiple (30) databases on the system so manually backing up the final logs and disabling the jobs is too much work and takes too long. I though no problem, I will script it but have run into trouble with it always complaninig that the final logship is too early to apply even though I dont export the final log until putting the database into norecovery mode. Firstly, does any one no a simple and reliable way of doing this? I have lokoed at some 3rd party software (redgate sqlbackup I think it was) but that didnt make it easy in this situation either. What I want to be able to do is basically run a script (a series of stored procedures) to get me to DR and run another to get me back with no dataloss. My scripts are very simplistic at the moment but here they are: 2 servers Primary Paris Secondary ParisT The StartAgentJobAndWait is a script written by someone else (ta) and just checks the jobs have finished or quits it if it never ends. • Can VMWare Server 2.0 be useful in Production for easing backups?

  Howdy, Let's run this idea by the group here. I am thinking about using VMWare Server in production to host a 2008 Domain Controller with DHCP and DNS, a 2008 member server with WSUS, some virus software, and other "management" utilities a second 2008 member server with SQL, IIS, and File Shares for a medium business of 50-100 desktops. The reason I am leaning toward Server vs ESXi is for backup purposes. Using ESXi, if I want to backup the VM's, I would need a second server in the office with enough storage availability to hold a copy of the vmdks. I am wondering if putting this virtual environment on top of a basic 2008 server install will allow for easier backups to both tape and/or to offsite storage using JungleDisk. Can a snapshot be triggered easily via a scheduled job? I know this doesn't necessarily handle file level restores, but I want to make sure in a DR situation, we can restore production servers quickly. Does this concept hold water? Would a very minimum install of the 2008 Host remove too many resources from the actual production machines? This would be a new Dell 410 server with 12 GB ram and (6) 600 GB 15K in a RAID 6, Dual Intel Xeon 2.26GHz procs.

  One of our exchange servers crashed, and I am trying to recover the mailboxes. We had 1 exchange 2003 server named "apex" and 1 exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise. the exchange 2010 server named "2008Enterprise" crashed. I created a new exchange 2010 server named "Providence". I ran the command on Providence: New-MailboxDatabase -Recovery -Name JBCMail -Server Providence -EdbFilePath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147\Mailbox Database 0579285147.edb" -LogFolderPath "c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147" this command executed and finished without error I then ran the command: eseutil /p E00 this command was executed from the below directory: c:\data\Exchange\Mailbox\Mailbox Database 0579285147 I then mounted the JBCMail with the mount command note: I do not have my full typed command. Inside my Exchange Management Console (EMC) I can view the new mailbox database named JBCMail. The JBCMail database is show as mounted on the exchange server named Providence. I can see the crashed Exchange server named 2008Exchange. In the EMC the crashed exchange server states the Copy Status under ServerConfiguration-Mailbox is ServiceDown. From here I need to recover three mailboxes The mail boxes are on the apex server. How do I move the mailboxs from apex to Providence? How do I restore the mailboxes from JBCmail mounted database to the user's mailbox? I do not fully understand how to use the Restore-Mailbox command because when I use this command it tries to restore the mailbox to the dead apex server. • Accidently overwrote system.dbf - What now?

  I accidentally overwrote system.dbf in /usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/system.dbf Well I did not actually do it accidentally, however I overwrote it because of other failures in the database. And when I try running the following: SQL> shutdown ORA-01109: database not open Database dismounted. ORACLE instance shut down. SQL> startup ORACLE instance started. Total System Global Area 289406976 bytes Fixed Size 1258488 bytes Variable Size 92277768 bytes Database Buffers 192937984 bytes Redo Buffers 2932736 bytes Database mounted. ORA-01589: must use RESETLOGS or NORESETLOGS option for database open Now I want to try to Recover the database because starting it in mounted or standard surely doesn't work. SQL> recover database using backup controlfile; ORA-00283: recovery session canceled due to errors ORA-01110: data file 1: '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/system.dbf' ORA-01122: database file 1 failed verification check ORA-01110: data file 1: '/usr/lib/oracle/xe/oradata/XE/system.dbf' ORA-01206: file is not part of this database - wrong database id How do I solve this? Is it even possible? My "real" problem was that I ran the /etc/init.d/oracle-xe configure and it overwrote my old configuration and probably removed passwords and such so my tables were gone, however I found the mytablespace.dbf so I hope that it is possible to recover? Please shed some light on this.

• Migrate Windows Server 2008 to a new hard disk 2

  Hi, A few weeks ago, I already asked how to move a Windows Server 2008 to a new hard disk. Despite the previous answers and two weeks lost trying to do it, I am always unable to move the OS to the new drive. What I tried: A backup/restore using Windows Backup. This never helped. First, I tried to backup, then copy the backup to a new drive, then restore. This results in "The parameter is incorrect. (0x80070057)" error caused by a bug in Windows Backup. Recently, I attempted to backup to a network share, but I can't restore from it, because of a "*The network path was not found. (0x80070035)" error. Trying the netsh interface ipv4 set address [...] does not work neither (saw at least three different errors, mostly "The interface is unknown.") A previously suggested solution using imagex from Windows AIK results in a non-bootable disk after writing an image to it. When booting from Windows 2008 installation disk (from USB), it finds that the HDD is not bootable and proposes to fix this, but then crashes, resulting in an unbootable USB flash disk (and HDD stays unbootable). As I said in my previous question, doing a clone of a hard disk drive gives an (of course) bootable disk, but Windows complain about hardware changes and cannot start. Now can somebody suggest me another way to move Windows Server 2008 to a new hard disk? Is it at least possible to do, or any hard disk failure/change implements necessarily to reinstall the whole OS?

• Recovering with DDRescue Cannot Complete (write error: Read-only file system)

  I'm trying to recover a corrupt VDI using vdfuse to mount the VDI and using dd_rescue to rescue the borked partition. dd_rescue seems to be working fine but once it reached about half of the partition, it just STOPs and gives the following error: ddrescue: write error: Read-only file system Wait.. what? It suddenly turns the FS it is writing the recovered partition to into a read-only file system. Well... why? Will I never be able to finish this? What's going on?

• Best way to replicate / mirror 100s of databases in SQL 2005

  Hi, I currently host around 400-500 SQL 2005 databases of varying sizes (1-10 gig) each. I am aware of most of the different methods available and the general pros/cons of mirroring, log shipping, replication and clustering, but i am not aware of how well they tend to perform when its employed at the size i have specified (400-500 unique databases). Does anyone have any good advice on what is likely the best method for having the ability to fail over to another server with this sort of setup? Fail over does not need to be immediate, i'm just looking for something better than taking backups every day and moving them to storage. I'm preferably looking for something that would also makes it easy to manage the databases in bulk (as opposed to one at a time). Thanks for your input!

After some research I found some info : Usually this error means that the SQL Server Service Principal Name (SPN) was not configured, and NTLM was not being used as an authentication mechanism. SQl services are runing under different domain accounts. So, I asked the domain admin to create SPNs for the servers, SQL service accounts for beoth source and destination using name and FQDN. enabled computer name and service accounts for delegation. When I run the following: select * from sys.dm_exec_connections I get the the same error: Login failed for user 'NT AUTHORITY\ANONYMOUS LOGON' Any help please?

  To All Experts here, I'd like to perform a MOSS server content migration from the existing single instance server (SQL Server 2008, Windows Server 2008, SharePoint 2007 SP1) all in one and by maintaining the server name only, here's what I had in my migration plan document outline: I have created the new Windows Server 2008 R2 + SQL Server 2008 SP1 and MOSS 2007 SP2 after that: Backup MOSS_ContentDB from SQL Server 2008 SSMS (does this enough to cover all top level sites and its content in the library and doc. repository ?) Backup all top level sites from CA site using the CA Sites backup and restore tools. turn off the old MOSSDEV01 (current server) rename the existing server (TempServ01) into MOSSDEV01 (so that the user bookmark and other link inside MOSS site still working) perform restore of the DB restore the site collection and its content from the backup is that the correct way to do it ? I haven't execute the server configuration wizard to create the same port number of the SSP, CA and the SQL Server DB yet. Any idea and suggestion would be greatly appreciated Thanks.

• Retrieving an RSA key from a running instance of Apache?

  I created an RSA keypair for an SSL certificate and stored the private key in /etc/ssl/private/server.key. Unfortunately this was the only copy of the private key that I had. Then I accidentally overwrote the file on disk (yes, I know). Apache is still running and still serving SSL requests, leading me to believe that there may be hope in recovering the private key. (Perhaps there is a symbolic link somewhere in /proc or something?) This server is running Ubuntu 12.04 LTS.

  Hi! Yesterday we had a power failure and the UPS did not work (it has worked perfect before). Everything seem to be ok when I started all the servers again except of the mail, when I try to mount the store I get the following message: “The database files in this store are corrupted” Server: Exchange 2003 running on a Small Business Server Latest full backup: one week old Backup program: Backup Exec 9.0 This is what I have done: 1. Copy every file in the MDBDATA folder (edb, stm, log) 2. Run Eseutil /d for priv1.edb 3. Run Eseutil /p for priv1.edb (took seven hours) 4. Run Isintig –fix –test alltests, now it breaks down. Isintig fails with the following error: Isinteg cannot initiate verification process. Please review the log file for more information. The problem is that there is no log file created. 5. Giving up on this route I decide to do a restore from the backup, it fails with the following error: Unable to read the header of logfile E00.log. Error -501, and the error: Information Store (5976) Callback function call ErrESECBRestoreComplete ended with error 0xC80001F5 The log file is damaged. My conclusion is that E00.log is damage, so how can I repair it so that I can restore the database? Or should I give up and try some other route?

• IT lead does not have a backup, DR plan in writing

  This is a general management question to IT managers out there. We are a small firm with about 4 servers in our colo cabinent. No full time IT manager. But we do have one person on monthly contract and I am having a terrible time getting him to share what these plans actually are. I am sure he HAS a plan (and its probably in his head..) but that does us no good if he gets hit by a bus.. How would you guys handle this? He is a long time friend, but I fear this is dangerous for us long term..I have confronted him on several occasions about this, and he tells me not to worry, he has go it covered.. Thanks.

• How to restore a dd overwritten disk partition?

  First of all, I admit I'm stupid and I didn't run proper backup of my data, but you know crap happens... So, I've used dd to overwrite the first 2GB of my 750GB NTFS partition with a FAT32 partition. I've run Photorec and EasyRecovery but all I can restore is the 2GB FAT32 partition and the files on that. Is there a way to "roll back" to the NTFS paritition, and recover - at least - some part of the 750GB data? Thanks.

  Our building is located approx. 100 meters from the explosive charges. They happen several times per day, and really shake the entire building a lot. This is going to go on for many days and the blasts are supposed to get stronger. Our server rooms are nothing fancy; one of them has all the racks on hard concrete while the other one has a raised floor (the one which allows the cables to go beneath it). Does anyone have any tips, countermeasures or best practices for us? Currently we are thinking of the following countermeasures: Daily report of the server rooms status lights (HD lights, power supplies and so on).   This morning a drive failed on our database server. The drive array (3 disks) is setup in a RAID 5 configuration. While we wait for a drive replacement we are preparing for a recovery strategy. Users are continuing to work on the system, albeit very slowly (don't know why??). How does one install the new drive - will the data for this drive automatically be rebuilt from the parity or is there another process we should follow? Edit: This is a hardware RAID controller. • Architecture for highly available MySQL with automatic failover in physically diverse locations

  I have been researching high availability (HA) solutions for MySQL between data centers. For servers located in the same physical environment, I have preferred dual master with heartbeat (floating VIP) using an active passive approach. The heartbeat is over both a serial connection as well as an ethernet connection. Ultimately, my goal is to maintain this same level of availability but between data centers. I want to dynamically failover between both data centers without manual intervention and still maintain data integrity. There would be BGP on top. Web clusters in both locations, which would have the potential to route to the databases between both sides. If the Internet connection went down on site 1, clients would route through site 2, to the Web cluster, and then to the database in site 1 if the link between both sites is still up. With this scenario, due to the lack of physical link (serial) there is a more likely chance of split brain. If the WAN went down between both sites, the VIP would end up on both sites, where a variety of unpleasant scenarios could introduce desync. Another potential issue I see is difficulty scaling this infrastructure to a third data center in the future. The network layer is not a focus. The architecture is flexible at this stage. Again, my focus is a solution for maintaining data integrity as well as automatic failover with the MySQL databases. I would likely design the rest around this. Can you recommend a proven solution for MySQL HA between two physically diverse sites? Thank you for taking the time to read this. I look forward to reading your recommendations.

STOP: c000021a {Fatal System Error} The initial session process or system process terminated unexpectedly with a status of (0x00000000) (0xc000012d 0x001003f0). The virtual server there is Windows Server 2008 R2 Enterprise Edition, which is also Domain Controller. I've tried to repair Windows but there is no restore point, and using the command line. I've tried the sfc /SCANNOW /OFFBOOTDIR /OFFWINDIR command, but I got the error Windows Resource Protection could not perform the requested operation.
