  • Distro that I can load into RAM?

    Is there a modified version of Ubuntu that I can choose to load to RAM on start up? Kinda like the LiveCD, but that can be easily modified (ie: I can install stuff) when I choose to boot from disk. The idea is to install it to a USB drive. I know there's something similar but slax is lacking in many departments. A "full" version Ubuntu would be better. A LiveUSB installation seems to be pretty close to what I want, but apparently I have to choose whether or not it will be persistent by the time I install it. I want to be able to choose that every time I boot.

  • Custom Ubuntu 12.04 distro not booting

    After following the instructions at: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/LiveCDCustomizationFromScratch; I installed xorg, gdm, and gnome. For some reason when I try to run it on both of my computers and qemu, it freezes up. Sadly I cant access a console to view all my logs, but I do have a dump of the boot process.     Possible Duplicate: How do I report a bug? discovered 2 bugs:: 1)cannot restart the computer when you click the top right icon power key "restart", it will stay on the splash image "ubuntu...",i wait for about 7 minutes and more, it also cannot restart, so, i have to uninstall the battery of the laptop...... 2)when i first update to the 12.10,not run for few hours, the "input method icon" on the top state bar is suddenly hide, when i use the shortcuts to switch the input method with "ctrl +space" it doesn' work at all, i restart the laptop, it can change the input method, but the state icon "a small keyboard icon is escape, i goto the "i bus" settings, but when i how to adjust it, the icon still can't display on the top bar (now i reinstall it use the iso file, this bug is fixed, but it cannot restart like the former one) it must has some problems of the "i bus" input method

  • Lubuntu with only Ubuntu's workspace/tiling features

    I searched around for a long time but found nothing. I am moving from Ubuntu to Lubuntu. Everything is great (I am okay with the bland style) except for three features that I use regularly in Ubuntu. 1) Win+w / Win+s zooms out to see an overview of the current workspace and all the workspaces respectively. 2) Ctrl+Alt+num which puts the current application in a specific portion of the workspace. 3) Snap to edge of workspace. How would I get those three features onto Lubuntu? Would that cancel out the benefit of Lubuntu, so I should just stick with Ubuntu (or any distro you can recommend)? Thank you.

    Possible Duplicate: A minimal Linux distribution for my ASUS EEE PC I am looking at buying an Asus eee PC and would like some input from the community on the different distros / OS's out there for it. I have heard that the Xandros distro that comes with the net-book isn't that great (lack of software, etc.), but I wonder what all the SuperUsers out there think. Please answer with one distro / OS per answer, and list (at least some of) the advantages and disadvantages of your choice. EDIT: To clarify, the version I am looking at is the 701 SSD, with the 8GB hard drive.

    I wanted to try HAProxy/Linux Virtual Server like front-end load-balancers, but as far I know, they're Linux-based software. I don't have any experiences with Linux yet. so there're quite many questions to ask: What is the best Linux distro(s) for load-balancing? I plan to use VirtualPC to run some virtual machines. How much RAM is the best for each machine run that distro? I want to simulate a load-balancer with can handle about 100 hits/second, is it possible? Thank you very much!

    I'm trying to set up my brother - who has a PPC mac, with 1 ghz processor and 256 ram, with a Linux distro that would allow him to surf the web on the device. If anyone knows of this mac, they also know that support has faded for the new browsers rendering the device essentially useless when it comes to the web. Ideally I would have installed jolicloud - but alas, it is only intel mac compatible... Please let me know if you have any suggestions for me!

    I'm pursuing a project that requires the use of a microprocessing board that can run Ubuntu. I have been searching the web, and have found some relatively expensive TI boards that will run it, as well as a board from Adapteva that will run it. Anybody have any suggestions on good boards/how to find boards that run Ubuntu? Many boards obviously run linux and are easy to find, but finding ones that run the Ubuntu Distro is a bit harder.

    I'm trying to have some productivity with my VXL ITONA thin client. it is very minimalistic: 128 MB disk, 64 MB ram, with an Ezra via processor. out of the box it comes with GIO linux, I could run from a USB key puppy linux and damnsmalllinux (but I couldn't make them installed on the SSD drive). more customizable distros like arch-linux and slax fail to load due to kernel failure caused by lack of cmov instruction in the VIA processor. I really like to make it usable, can you please recommend me a nice distro? I'm afraid the Gentoo solution is too scary for me right now (compiling a linux kernel over a a thin client is too much) thanks!

  • Good Linux Distro for Disconnected Netbook

    I'm deployed to Afghanistan with the Army and I have a friend who's netbook had his hard drive take a dump on him. He ordered a new hard drive and I was able to download and burn a copy of Ubuntu to disk from work. However the default install doesn't support most of the media that he wants to watch (AVI files, probably some DIVX video) without installing extra packages. We don't have internet in the tent and really don't have a vaiable option for downloading additional packages through the package manager anywhere here. The computer is a small HP netbook. All my friend wants is to watch ripped movies. Does anyone know of a good way to do either of the following: Download packages seperately and install them via CD A distro that is going to come preloaded with all of the packages and needed to watch just about any type of video file you can think of?     Can someone suggest the best linux distro for CUDA development. The reason why I'm asking is that I tried installing the latest cuda SDK in Fedora 12, and it was a real pain in the neck. It took me 8 hours to get the nouveau driver removed and the nvidia-driver installed. After that somehow the OS decides to act up and blow up the /var/log/message file to 9 GB and eat up all my remaining space, with strange errors. I don't even understand what happened further, but my Nvidia drives don't work anymore. Please don't flame me, I'm NOT a windows fanboy or anything. I've been using Linux since 2002, and actually like it. Its just my personal experience. Would be really helpful for positive suggestions. Fanboys, please stay aside. Thanks in advance.

    Hello, I have a root-server (i7/24GB/1TB) running Ubuntu 10.04 LTS as my OS. After some security audits (OpenVAS, Retina etc) I see that Ubuntu isn't the most secure system for a semi-corporate environment. Its updated from many sources, ofc from the Ubuntu security repo too. But nevertheless I could exploit my OpenSSL install with an exploit from August/September. There are some critical updates needed which Ubuntu does not provide. I was using Debian and Ubuntu for almost 5 years but now I doubt. What distro is secure and up to date from your point of view? How can I make the server more secure? Outsourcing of every software-module to a VM? I am not new to server-hardening, my packages are up to date I read Ubuntu Security Notices and I have no unneeded services installed on my server.   • boot failure trying to install linux distro from a cd

    Hoping someone can help me get this installation from a cd going. I'm using an older pc: hp pavillion 2.66Ghz, 512RAM with a BIOS revision of 6/30/2003. I reclaimed some an older drive (Seagate ST340810A) that seems to be working as its recognized in the bios (auto-detected) I downloaded a mini.iso of ubuntu 10.10 that I want to install and burned the image to a CD for install. My boot sequence is: First Boot Device [CDROM] and I disabled devices 2-4 so I can just force it to read first from the CDROM. This old pc also has a separate CD writer which is a Sec.Slave, so the Sec.Master is the Toshiba DVD/ROM DSM-171 drive where I placed the burned cd with the linux distro. So, with these settings I cannot get it to boot. I get the "DISK BOOT FAILURE, INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER". Where do I go from here? Thanks.

    I've had Ubuntu (9.10) on my netbook in the past and I really liked it. I'm currently running Fedora and feeling like I should "change it up" again. I've played around with Ubuntu 10.04 Lucid a little, and so far I'm very impressed. I've always wanted to try Arch, but I'm worried I won't have the driver support I need for all the non-standard hardware in a netbook. Does anybody have a suggestion for a new distro to try? I'm preferably looking for something feature-rich over light-weight, and something that I can have up and running with a minimum of configuration (at least partially working). Thanks!

    I have an older machine with these specs: CPU: AMD Athlon X2 @ 2,8 Ghz, 2MB L2 RAM: 4 GB DDR2@ 800 Mhz GPU: Asus 4890 TOP 1 GB I want to turn the machine into a media server via XBMC (so good video and wireless peripherial driver support would also be a plus), but I also want to use it as an OpenVPN server so I can tunnel RDP to my other Windows machine in the network. I mostly want to use a Debian based distro (for the convenience of apt) and right now my options are: Ubuntu, Xubuntu or Mint. Which one do you think is more fitting? Thanks in advance.
