• Changing error message for datatype validation?

  Hey guys, I've a small question on ASP.NET MVC 2. I'm using Data Annotations on my Presentation Model and its model binder per default. But one step back, I want to do the most elementary thing: validation of the data type. Let's say I have an "int ID" on my model and want to edit the according entity in my view. If I enter something wrong like "foo", then I get a model error back, but the validation message is on English. I want to have this message in other languages, too. How can I do this? I remember that in MVC 1 I've written a custom model binder which checks the data types, but that's not what I want to do (at least not in MVC 2). Thus I hope there is a better way...   I have an interest in artificial intelligence from a evolutionary standpoint. I want to experiment with it somewhat with a high level language like C#, however, I'm stuck on one of the most elementary problems with artificial life -- how to contain it? The best thing I can think of is a virtual machine. Where would I start to create a VM for my budding digital organisms in C#? How could I be sure they couldn't escape into the 'wild'? • What does LAME text does in MP3 file?

  I see here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MP3 that MP3 file consists of MP3 headers interchanged with MP3 data. MP3 header consist of few bytes. But here is my MP3 file dump with ID3 tag cut. Header is highlighted with blue. You can see that "LAME3.96" text is highlighted with green. What does it does there? Is this a part of MP3 elementary stream? Or this is the part of some headers I didn't tag?

• Do you use enums in your data applications and how?

  My practice shows that a general enterprise application has a lot of entities which's nature corresponds to an elementary enumeration. For example We may have an Order entity which may have such fields as "OrderType", "OrderStatus", "Currency", etc. referencing corresponding Entities which are nothing more than just a textual name bound to a key to be referenced. Using enums would look very natural here. But entities have to be defined in application code at design-time, am I right? While in we need to be able to CRUD enum value variants at runtime and use enums in server-side SQL queries (like stored procedures and views). What are you practices and thoughts on this subject? I am particularly interested in C#4, linq and T-SQL.

• WPF/.NET data access models - resource recommendations

  We're in the early design/prep phases of transferring/updating a rather large "legacy" 3 tier client-server app to a new version. We’re looking at doing WPF over Winforms as it appears to be the direction Microsoft is pushing development of the future and we’d like the maximize the life cycle/span of the apps. That said during the rewrite we’d like to make as many changes to our data access/presentation model to improve performance as much as possible up front as many. I’ve been doing some research along that vein but the vast majority of the resources I've found that discuss WPF focus only simple data tracking apps or focus on the very basics UI design/controls. The few items that even discuss data presentation are fairly elementary in depth. Are there any books/articles/recommended reading/other resources recommended for development related to large enterprise level business apps? Any “gotchas” that should/could be avoided? General advice to minimize the time underwater

  I have what may be a pretty elementary Hibernate question. Do HQL (and/or Criteria) update queries cause updates to live domain objects? And do they automatically flush now-invalid domain objects from the first-level cache? Example: Player playerReference1 = session.get(Player.class,1); session.createQuery("update players set gold = 100").executeUpdate(); //Question #1 -- does playerReference1.getGold() now return 100? Player playerReference2 = session.get(Player.class,1); //Question #2 -- does playerReference2.getGold() return 100, or is it the same exact object? Should I make a practice of evicting all objects that are affected by an HQL update if there's a chance some code will need it later?

• Echoing a pseudo column value after a COUNT

  Hi Gang... Please don't beat me if this is elementary. I searched and found disjointed stuff relating to pseudo columns. Nothing spot on about what I need. Anyway... I have a table with some rows. Each record has a unique ID, an ID that relates to another entity and finally a comment that relates to that last entity. So, I want to COUNT these rows to basically find what entity has the most comments. Instead of me explaining the query, I'll print it SELECT entity_id, COUNT(*) AS amount FROM comments GROUP BY entity_id ORDER BY amount DESC The query does just what I want, but I want to echo the values from that pseudo column, 'amount' Can it be done, or should I use another method like mysql_num_rows? • Should I separate RESTful API controllers from "regular" controllers?

  This seems like an elementary question, but after a lot of searching around I can't seem to find a straightforward explanation: If I'm building a web application that is going to be accessed largely through a web browser, but that will also support some API requests in a RESTful way, should there be a large degree of separation between the two? On one hand, it seems a large amount of the functionality is the same, with identical data presented in different views (HTML vs. XML/JSON). But on the other hand, there are certain things I need to present to the browser that doesn't quite fit a RESTful approach: how to get an empty form to create a new instance of a resource and how to get a pre-populated form to edit an existing resource. Should these two different methods of accessing the system by funneled through different controllers? Different methods in the same controller? The exact same methods with a switch for view type?

• NServiceBus - Message Sent to and Removed from Queue, but Never Fire IHandleMessages.Handle

  First let me state, today is my first day using NSesrviceBus - so I hope my question isn't too elementary. I have managed to set up Sender, Receiver, and Messages projects. When I debug the Sender, I see the messages show up in the configured queue. When I debug the Receiver, the messages are removed from the queue. However, my IHandleMessages Handle event never fires, and no Console output is displayed. I'm sure I've done something wrong (I think I may have mixed tutorials from different versions of NServiceBus) - any suggestions would be appreciated.

• QR Factorization Discrepancy

  I'm trying to get a feel for the Intel MKL library with a simple back-solve (A*x = b) using a QR factorization and comparing my MKL answer to the answer of a known working solution. When my answers didn't come up correct I printed a diff between the Q and R matrices of the known working and the MKL test code. I know MKL/lapack uses "elementary reflectors" to store the values of both the Q and R matrices. So, I'm wondering if these differences (mostly +/-) are by design or the result of some bug. I'm using DGEQRF, DORMQR, and DTRSM routines to solve the system and DORGQR (for debugging) to get the Q matrix shown in the diff. diff with 6x6 matrix (top known, bottom mkl): http://pastebin.com/4uwcME0J

• Embedded Google Earth Plug-Ins no longer working

  I really hope someone can help me. I just noticed that none of my website's Google Earth embedded plug-in's work anymore (in Safari, Chrome or Firefox)  All you can see now is blank space and small text that says "Information is temporarily unavailable." I have no idea why they would no longer be working.  Nothing has changed whatsoever. • Right-click on a Listbox in a Silverlight 4 app.

  I am trying to implement what I used to take for granted in Winforms applications. I am a Silverlight noob, so hopefully all this is elementary. I have a listbox in a Silverlight 4 app. I'd like to do the following: Right-click on the listbox Have the item under the location where I click highlight itself I'd like a context menu to popup (with my own items in the context menu) From my research so far, it appears that there is no ContextMenu construct in Silverlight, instead we have to build up a Grid/Canvas structure and attach it to a Popup object, which is what is then popped up. My questions are as follows: To accomplish #2, I need some kind of hit test on the listbox. I can't figure out how to do that and my google-fu isn't helping. Once I do identify the index under the mouse, how do I actually select the item? Is there a reusable Context menu component somewhere that I can use? Extra credit if the component allows arbitrary sub-menus.

This does not work - the the binding expression is passed as string to the control: {<uc:usercontrol runtat="server" message='<%#Me.protectedVariable%>'/>} The code behind include a Page.Databind() call in page_load. But this does work: <uc:usercontrol runat="server" id="usercontrol1"/> And in code behind page_load: usercontrol1.message = Me.protectedVariable Do I have to bind from the code-behind? Is this a page life cycle issue?

• an array of strings as a jQuery selector?

  I have an array of strings that are valid jQuery selectors (i.e. IDs of elements on the page): ["#p1", "#p2", "#p3", "#p4", "#p5"] I want to select elements with those IDs into a jQuery array. This is probably elementary, but I can't find anything online. I could have a for-loop which creates a string "#p1,#p2,#p3,#p4,#p5" which could then be passed to jQuery as a single selector, but isn't there another way? Isn't there a way to pass an array of strings as a selector? EDIT: Actually, there is an answer out there already.

• On Turning 30&hellip;

  I know I am not a wise old sage like some people in the community.  I just turned 30 however I feel like all my years looking back have changed me.  My collective experiences and thoughts have given me a different perspective on life recently.  Seven months ago my head was in a gutter and since then a lot of things have happened.  I was always the weird kid in the corner reading Star Trek books.  When I was in elementary school I thought that kids would throw me birthday parties out of pity because I was the poor kid who everyone hated.  I am no longer that person.  I realized that during the worst possible period between my 29th and 30th year when I hit rock bottom.  You all know the insane story as I’ve told it two billion times over.  Honestly it was the best thing that ever happened to me in my life time, because many things would not have happened.  My friends came through for me at every given moment people from all over were checking up on me all over the world.  I fell and I landed on a bunch of people it was awesome.  I landed on family and friends who I thought I was never close enough to talk about these things.  They helped me realize I had a ton of unfulfilled dreams.  I got to move to New York City one of the greatest cities in the universe.  I got to do whatever I wanted without judgment from anyone.  I got to meet some great people at a few meetup groups in the past few months.  I got to meet an awesome person that I have been dating for 3 months.  I am trying to run for the 8 billionth time and keep up with it.  I got to go to Europe and next week for the first time New Orleans.  I got renewed for MVP for 2012.  I am grateful for all the people and things in my life.  I understand that sometimes when things seem bad you can always seek friends and family.  They will always help me.  I have to learn to lean on people sometimes just how they occasionally lean on me.  That is the biggest thing I have learned from the decade of 20 to 30.  I hope that 30 to 40 will be the best decade.  I hope that I can continue to grow.  I will catch you all later.   Let me preface by saying that knowing some elementary music theory and music notation may be helpful in grasping the problem at hand. I'm currently building a Music Notation and Tablature Editor (in Javascript). But I've come to a point where the core parts of the program are more or less there. All functionality I plan to add at this point will really build off the foundation that I've created. As a result, I want to refactor to really solidify my code. I'm using an API called VexFlow to render notation. Basically I pass the parts of the editor's state to VexFlow to build the graphical representation of the score. Here is a rough and stripped down UML diagram showing you the outline of my program: In essence, a Part has many Measures which has many Notes which has many NoteItems (yes, this is semantically weird, as a chord is represented as a Note with multiple NoteItems, individual pitches or fret positions). All of the relationships are bi-directional. There are a few problems with my design because my Measure class contains the majority of the entire application view logic. The class holds the data about all VexFlow objects (the graphical representation of the score). It contains the graphical Staff object and the graphical notes. (Shouldn't these be placed somewhere else in the program?) While VexFlowFactory deals with actual creation (and some processing) of most of the VexFlow objects, Measure still "directs" the creation of all the objects and what order they are supposed to be created in for both the VexFlowStaff and VexFlowNotes. I'm not looking for a specific answer as you'd need a much deeper understanding of my code. Just a general direction to go in. Here's a thought I had, create an MeasureView/NoteView/PartView classes that contains the basic VexFlow objects for each class in addition to any extraneous logic for it's creation? but where would these views be contained? Do I create a ScoreView that is a parallel graphical representation of everything? So that ScoreView.render() would cascade down PartView and call render for each PartView and casade down into each MeasureView, etc. Again, I just have no idea what direction to go in. The more I think about it, the more ways to go seem to pop into my head. I tried to be as concise and simplistic as possible while still getting my problem across. Please feel free to ask me any questions if anything is unclear. It's quite a struggle trying to dumb down a complicated problem to its core parts.
