  Hello All, I have a peculiar problem with having a JavaScript for loop in XSL document. Here it goes:: I am calling a JavaScript function on the click of a CheckBox. Following is what I wanted to do in the javascript function :: function SeelctAll() { for(var cnt = 0; cnt < 100; cnt++) { //Business Logic here. } } For this I replaced < with < and tried. • Is there any legitimate use for bare strings in PHP?

  This question got me thinking about bare strings. When PHP sees a string that's not enclosed in quotes, it first checks to see if it's a constant. If not, it just assumes it's a string and goes on anyway. So for example if I have echo $foo[bar]; If there's a constant called bar it uses that for the array key, but if not then it treats bar as a bare string, so it behaves just like echo $foo["bar"]; This can cause all kinds of problems if at some future date a constant is added with the same name. My question is, is there any situation in which it actually makes sense to use a bare string?

  So, as described on this msdn page, when you define a Connection String for SQL Server Compact 3.5, you can use the "Data Directory" macro, like this: quote from this msdn page: Data Directory Support SQL Server Compact 3.5 now supports the Data Directory macro. This means that if you add the string |DataDirectory| (enclosed in pipe symbols) to a file path, it will resolve to the path of the database. For example, consider the connection string: "Data Source= c:\program files\MyApp\Mydb.sdf" When using Data Directory, you can instead use the following connection string: "Data Source = |DataDirectory|\Mydb.sdf" For more information, see How to: Deploy a SQL Server Compact 3.5 Database with an Application. However, the 'for more information' link on msdn doesn't actually give any more information. So my question is: How does the |Data Directory| macro translate at run time? For WinForm apps, it seems to just give the location of the executable. Or is it more complicated than that?

  I've written a big sql script that creates a CSV file. I want to call a cronjob every night to create a fresh CSV file and have it available on the website. Say for example I'm store my file in '/home/sites/example.com/www/files/backup.csv' and my SQL is SELECT * INTO OUTFILE '/home/sites/example.com/www/files/backup.csv' FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\n' FROM ( .... MySQL gives me an error when the file already exists File '/home/sites/example.com/www/files/backup.csv' already exists Is there a way to make MySQL overwrite the file? I could have PHP detect if the file exists and delete it before creating it again but it would be more succinct if I can do it directly in MySQL.

• What to do of exceptions when implementing java.lang.Iterator

  The java.lang.Iterator interface has 3 methods: hasNext, next and remove. In order to implement a read-only iterator, you have to provide an implementation for 2 of those: hasNext and next. My problem is that these methods does not declare any exceptions. So if my code inside the iteration process declares exceptions, I must enclose my iteration code inside a try/catch block. My current policy has been to rethrow the exception enclosed in a RuntimeException. But this has issues because the checked exceptions are lost and the client code no longer can catch those exceptions explicitly. How can I work around this limitation in the Iterator class? Here is a sample code for clarity: class MyIterator implements Iterator { @Override public boolean hasNext() { try { return implementation.testForNext(); } catch ( SomethingBadException e ) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } @Override public boolean next() { try { return implementation.getNext(); } catch ( SomethingBadException e ) { throw new RuntimeException(e); } } ... }

• A database of questions with unambiguous numeric answers.

  I (and co-hackers) are building a sort of trivia game inspired by this blog post: http://messymatters.com/calibration. The idea is to give confidence intervals and learn how to be calibrated (when you're "90% sure" you should be right 90% of the time). We're thus looking for, ideally, thousands of questions with unambiguous numerical answers. Also, they shouldn't be too boring. There are a lot of random statistics out there -- eg, enclosed water area in different countries -- that would make the game mind-numbing. Things like release dates of classic movies are more interesting (to most people). Other interesting ones we've found include Olympic records, median incomes for different professions, dates of famous inventions, and celebrity ages. Scraping things like above, by the way, was my reason for asking this question: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/2611418/scrape-html-tables So, if you know of other sources of interesting numerical facts (in a parsable form) I'm eager for pointers to them. • MySQL: Blank row in table after LOAD DATA INFILE

  Hi, I'm uploading a large amount of data from a CSV (I'm doing it via MySQL Workbench): LOAD DATA INFILE 'C:/development/mydoc.csv' INTO TABLE mydatabase.mytable CHARACTER SET utf8 FIELDS TERMINATED BY ',' OPTIONALLY ENCLOSED BY '"' LINES TERMINATED BY '\r'; However, I'm noticing that it keeps adding an empty line full of nulls/zeros after the last record. I'm guessing it's because of the "LINES TERMINATED" command. However, I need that to load the data in correctly. Is there some way around this / some better SQL to avoid the blank row in the table? (I even enclosed that in brackets and tried but same result) Am i doing something wrong here?

  Hi, when I need to pass an array to a function, it seems all the following declarations of the function will work void f(int arr[]) void f(int arr[4]) // is this one correct? for this: int a[]={1,2,3,4}; f(a); But when I assign an array to another array, it fails int a[]={1,2,3,4}; int b[4] = a; // error: array must be initialized with a brace-enclosed initializer So why an array passed as an argument of a function is okay, but used on the rhs of simple assignment is wrong?   Hi, I'm dynamically creating textfields in as3, and formatting them with the TextFormat class. I'm having some issues though with selecting the exact "style" of font to apply to the textfields. My code so far looks like: formatT = new TextFormat( ); formatT.bold = false; formatT.color = 0x000000; formatT.font = "TradeGothic"; formatT.size = 16; var textItem = new TextField(); textItem.text = "foobar"; textItem.setTextFormat(formatT); addChild(textItem); This works ("Trade Gothic" is applied to the enclosed text), however I can't figure out how to apply a specific style of "Trade Gothic", for instance "Light Oblique". Is there some way that I can specify this using the TextFormat class? Thanks.

  I am working on expansion of my jQuery plug-in authoring knowledge, just playing around with my own ideas for learning benefits. So i was wondering how you guys tackle the need of plugin executing without any user specific input. So I have a need for plug-in that executes right away after document is ready, without any user's specific input just as long as doc is loaded, so the only way I see how to execute plug-in on it's own is to attach handler to ready listener that executes my function which I extended the jQuery with. And because this needs to be self enclosed, part of the code, I attach handler to event listener within the function. So how else could one tackle this? Any take at this is appreciated. Thank you in advance everyone.

I have a C library which only compiles in Visual C++ (it probably works in gcc) if: I compile it as C++ code Define __cplusplus which results in all the declarations being enclosed in extern "C" { } So, by doing this I have a static library called, say, bsbs.lib Now, I have a C++ project called Tester which would like to call function barbar in declared in bsbs.h. All goes fine, until I try to link to bsbs.lib where I get the all-too-familiar: Tester.obj : error LNK2001: unresolved external symbol _foofoo And it always seems to be foofoo which cannot be resolved regardless of which function I call in Tester (barbar or anything else).

• PHP: $_POST array to XML file and display results.

  I'm creating a "Madlibs" page where visitors can create funny story things online. The original files are in XML format with the blanks enclosed in XML tags (Such as blablabla <PluralNoun></PluralNoun> blablabla <Verb></Verb> ). The form data is created using XSL and the results are saved using a $_POST array. How do I post the $_POST array between the matching XML tags and then display the result to the page? I'm sure it uses a "foreach" statement, but I'm just not familiar enough with PHP to figure out what functions to use. Any help would be great. Thanks, E

  Hi everybody. I'm looking for a way to deploy an Internet Explorer plugin for SVG-rendering without manually installing it on every client machine. Is there a way to use some ActiveX voodoo stuff to automatically install a plugin? I have no reliable information about the IE versions that are used on the client side so I assume the worst: IE6. To make things even harder, the users probably don't have administrator privileges on the client machines. The whole thing happens in an enclosed local network, so security considerations are entirely secondary. It also does not really matter which actual plugin it will be, anything that can render SVG and run Javascript on it will do just fine. I can't think of anything to make this work so I'm desperate for help here...

  I am working through a book about Javascript and have encountered the following example of code designed to replace the value of the class attribute of a table header HTML element: th.className = th.className.replace(/asc/,"dsc"); th.className = th.className.replace(/dsc/,"asc"); Why is the first parameter of .replace, the current value of th.className, enclosed in forward slashes instead of quotation marks? Why not use quotation marks to enclose both parameters, not just the second one? Thank you in advance for any help given.   In Javascript, we can call methods on string literals directly without enclosing it within round brackets. But not for other types such as numbers, or functions. It is a syntax error, but is there a reason as to why the Javascript lexer needs these other types to be enclosed in round brackets? For example, if we extend Number, String, and Function with an alert method and try calling this method on the literals, it's a SyntaxError for Number and Function, while it works for a String. function alertValue() { alert(this); } Number.prototype.alert = alertValue; String.prototype.alert = alertValue; Function.prototype.alert = alertValue; We can call alert directly on a string object: "someStringLiteral".alert() // alerts someStringLiteral but it's a SyntaxError on numbers, and functions. 7.alert(); function() {}.alert(); To work with these types, we have to enclose it within brackets: (7).alert(); // alerts "7" (function() {}).alert(); // alerts "function() {}"

• Can the Browser 'Forward' Button be Set from HTML?

  Example: At the bottom of the StackOver Questions page are a bunch of page numbers (1,2,3...), enclosed in a set of prev and next buttons. Clicking next repeatedly will bring me to, say page 5, at which point I will have: The page's prev button will be set to 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions?page=4' The Back button on my Browser will have the same value. The page's next button will be set to 'http://stackoverflow.com/questions?page=6' The Forward button on my Browser - won't be set to anything. Obviously, if I hit the Back button on the Browser, then Forward will have a value, pointing to the URL for page 5 - but not otherwise. Is there any way, from HTML (plus Javascript), to set the value of the Browser's Forward button? Or is this one of those things that HTML is simply forbidden to do?

Question: When csv data is being loaded into table, I want to put current date in table for all those corresponding 'deleted' entries in csv file. And null for 'current' entries. How can I do this? Example: csv file: id_1, name_1, type_1, current id_2, name_1, type_2, deleted id_3, name_3, type_3, current Table after loading this data should look like this: id_1, name_1, type_1, null id_2, name_1, type_2, 2010-05-10 id_3, name_3, type_3, null Edit Probably, I could run another separate query after loading csv file. Wondering if it could be done in same query?

• CSS: Fixed background images taller than the browser viewport

  I've got a large photo (940x1210) as the background image for a #page div which wraps around all the content on a site. Since the photo is a headshot, it looks pretty silly tiled, so I've set it not to repeat, and positioned it at 0,0. When the content enclosed by #page is taller than 1210px and the background image is set to scroll, the photo scrolls out of view, but if it's fixed, only the part of the image displayed initially in the browser viewport shows up- either the top half (fixed top left) or bottom half (fixed bottom left). Here's the question: how can I fix the background image to the bottom of #page (or the body) while scrolling through the full height of the image until I get to the bottom?
