  • Can I use VirtualBox as a sandbox for 12.04?

    I am quite a cautious person though not afraid to experiment. I currently have 11.10 Unity and 12.04 Beta 2 running on different partitions (no problems). I have learned here that Unity can run in VirtuaBox. When I upgrade to 12.04 LTS later this month, I am curious to understand if I could also run 12.04 in Virtual Box for experimentation and test some things before I implement them into my system? Maybe there is a better way to achieve this, without partitioning my hard drive.

  • Debugging HLSL for Windows 8 application [migrated]

    i'm currently in the process of creating a Windows 8 applicaiton using SharpDX (the managed c# directx wrapper). However I have ran into problems with one of my shaders and I want to know if its possible to debug such applications. PIX doesn't seem to work of directX apps as the executable does not like opening directly, and the new visual studio graphics debugging toolkit in VS2012 always states "unable to start the experiment" when I try to capture any information about my session.   • 2D Collision in Canvas - Balls Overlapping When Velocity is High

    I am doing a simple experiment in canvas using Javascript in which some balls will be thrown on the screen with some initial velocity and then they will bounce on colliding with each other or with the walls. I managed to do the collision with walls perfectly but now the problem is with the collision with other balls. The problem is, some balls overlap each other and stick together while some of them rebound perfectly. I don't know what is causing this issue. The objective is to write a C program that slowly writes a string of text to a file, metered by usleep() in a 100 count for loop. However, I can't get it to work using watch -d ./output What syntax do I need for the watch command to see the changes made to the file size?

    I have a mac book pro (7200 rpm / 8GB ram) and I like the idea of virtualized development environments as I like to experiment with different technologies and don't like to have environmental cross contamination. I would like to know for the vm's I run (rarely 2 at time..almost always 1 vm at a time) should the virtual hdd be on my laptops native hdd or some external form (usb hdd, usb flash, or since i have mac express card based sad ?). I don't mind maxing out my ram to 16GB if thats a better option to have in the mix. Thank you

  • How to bypass firewall to connect to a proxy server?

    I am conducting a small experiment on my office network. I have setup a proxy server on my desktop machine (connected to my LAN) and I have volunteers access the internet via my proxy server. Everything is working well. The problem is people cannot connect to the proxy server through their laptops. I asked my network admin and he said the wireless network has a firewall which prevents users from connecting to my proxy. He said I could tunnel the traffic or use SSH though. I am afraid I do not understand fully what is going on. Is there a way by which users connected on the wireless network can connect to my desktop? I am using FreeProxy on Windows as my proxy server: http://www.handcraftedsoftware.org/index.php?page=download FreeProxy allows me to create a SOCKS 4/4a/5 proxy. Is that what I need? Part of the experiment involves logging the URL requests of the users. I am doing a measurement study. So, any solution must allow me to log the URL requests of users. Also, what changes do I need to make in the browser configuration.

  • chkconfig creating service symlinks with the wrong order

    On RHEL 6.3, I have a system service that should be starting after postgresql and httpd (order 64 and 85, respectively), but chkconfig always places it at order 50. I tried an experiment on a CentOS 6.0 virtual machine to make sure I understood the LSB stanza syntax. I created /etc/init.d/foo, owner root, permissions 755, with this text: ### BEGIN INIT INFO # Provides: foo # Required-Start: postgresql httpd # Default-Start: 2 3 4 5 # Default-Stop: 0 1 6 # Description: Foo init script ### END INIT INFO And then ran chkconfig --add foo. Result: /etc/rc5.d/S86foo is created, as expected. (The other runlevels are also as expected.) I repeated the exact same experiment on the RHEL machine, and it created /etc/rc5.d/S50foo instead. I can't see anything different between the two that would lead to different results. Both machines have postgresql and httpd starting at the same orders and runlevels. Any thoughts? I could just use # chkconfig: 2345 86 50, or manually rename the service symlinks to the correct order, but I'm trying to document an install process for later users, and I want to know how to do it right and understand why it's not working as expected.
