• Getting expired domain name - most effective route?

  There is a domain name I have been wanting for years that was used as a parked page (read: cybersquatted) that has entered into WHOIS's redemptionPeriod stage. The domain has been expired for 61 days now - after contacting the Registar, they informed me that it would stay in redemption for 75 days. After which, it would either be sold to resellers, or sent back to the public registry. (I have since sent a followup message requesting the reseller they use.) My question is: What is the best way to proceed? I know there is at least one competitor that would love to have this name, but I'm unsure if they even know it's expiring. I did not tell the Registar the domain in question, as they seem geared towards cybersquatting, and I do not trust them. Domain Front Running sucks. Should I use a backorder service? Should I just take my chances and try to grab it after75 days? I checked an auctionhouse by manually browsing their expired domains - it wasn't there.

• How to handle recurring dates (dates only) in .NET?

  I am trying to figure out a good way to handle recurring events in .NET, specifically for an ASP.NET MVC application. The idea is that a user can create an event and specify that the event can occur repeatedly after a specific interval (e.g. "every two weeks", "once a month" and so on). What would be the best way to tackle this? My brainstorming right now is to have two tables: Job and RecurringJob. Job is the "master" record and has the description of the job as well a key to what customer it's for, while RecurringJob links back to Job and has additional info on what the occurrence frequency is (e.g. 1 for "once a month") as well as the timespan (e.g. "Weekly", "Monthly"). The issue is how to determine and set the next occurrence of the job since this will have to be something that's done regularly. I've seen two trains of thought with this: This logic should either be stored in a database column and periodically updated, or calculated on the fly in the code. Any thoughts or suggestions on tackling this? Edit: this is for a subscription based web app I'm creating to let service businesses schedule their common recurring jobs easily and track their customers. So a typical use might be to create a "Cut lawn" job for Mr Smith that occurs every month The exact date isn't important - it's the ability for the customer to see that Mr Smith gets his lawn cut every month and followup with him about it. Let me rephrase the above to better convey my idea. A sample use case for the application might be as follows: User pulls up the customer record for John Smith and clicks the Add Job link. The user fills out the form to create a job with a name of "Cut lawn", a start date of 11/15/2009, and selects a checkbox indicating that this job continually occurs. The user is presented with a secondary screen asking for the job frequency. The user indicates (haven't decided how at this point - let's assume select lists) that the job occurs once a month. User clicks save. Now, when the user views the record for John Smith, they can see that he has a job, "Cut lawn", that occurs every month starting from 11/15/2009. On the main dashboard when it's one week prior to the assumed start date, the user sees the job displayed with an indicator such as "12/15/2009 - Cut lawn (John Smith)". A week before the due date someone from the company calls him up to schedule and he says he's going to be out of town until 1/1/2010, so he wants his appointment rescheduled for that date. Our user can change the date for the job to be 1/1/2010, and now the recurrence will start one month from that date (e.g. next time will be 2/1/2010). The idea behind this is that the app is targeting businesses like lawn care, plumbers, carpet cleaners and the like where the exact date isn't as important (because it can and will change as people are busy), the key thing is to give the business an indicator that Mr. Smith's monthly service is coming up, and someone should give him a call to determine when exactly it can be scheduled for. In effect give these businesses a way to track repeat business and know when it's time to followup with a customer.

• SSL on Heroku / User Authentication Across Multiple Domains

  Posted a previous question on this, but have a followup. I was trying to create a workaround to use SSL on the expensive custom domain. I'm willing to live with bumping a user to https://app.heroku.com from http://www.app.com for certain secure pages, and have monkey-patched SSL required to make this happen. However, now this issue is with making sure my User is logged in when I do so. As I understand, cookies aren't cross domain. Is there a way around this issue?

  Hi SQL'ers, This is a followup question to: SQL Query with ORDER BY But I think the SQL logic is going to be quite different, so I am posting it as separate question. I am trying to extend my sql SELECT query it and having some trouble: I have the table: id type radius ------------------------- 1 type1 0.25 2 type2 0.59 3 type1 0.26 4 type1 0.78 5 type3 0.12 6 type2 0.45 7 type3 0.22 8 type3 0.98 and I am trying to learn how to SELECT the second smallest radius for each given type. So the returned recordset should look like: id type radius ------------------------- 3 type1 0.26 2 type2 0.59 7 type3 0.22 (Note: in the referenced question, I was looking for the lowest radius, not the second lowest radius). I am assuming I have to use LIMIT and OFFSET, but if I use the MIN() won't that return a distinct record containing the minimum radius? Does anyone have any thoughts on how to attack this?   For an ai-class project I need to implement a reinforcement learning algorithm which beats a simple game of tetris. The game is written in Java and we have the source code. I know the basics of reinforcement learning theory but was wondering if anyone in the SO community had hands on experience with this type of thing. What would your recommended readings be for an implementation of reinforced learning in a tetris game? Are there any good open source projects that accomplish similar things that would be worth checking out? • In Haskell, will calling length on a Lazy ByteString force the entire string into memory?

  I am reading a large data stream using lazy bytestrings, and want to know if at least X more bytes is available while parsing it. That is, I want to know if the bytestring is at least X bytes long. Will calling length on it result in the entire stream getting loaded, hence defeating the purpose of using the lazy bytestring? If yes, then the followup would be: How to tell if it has at least X bytes without loading the entire stream? EDIT: Originally I asked in the context of reading files but understand that there are better ways to determine filesize. Te ultimate solution I need however should not depend on the lazy bytestring source.

I'm designing an interface in .NET that would be consumed from COM applications (mainly VB6, but Visual C++ 6 is also a possibility) and I would like to use Collection types as argument and return types for the methods in the interface. Questions: What happens to the VB6 built-in collection types (arrays, collections, dictionaries) when they go through interop? My current guess is that: arrays - System.Array collections - Microsoft.VisualBasic.Collection dictionaries - System.Collections.Hashtable Is that correct? Which interfaces should I use as return types? IEnumerable, ICollection, IList, IDictionary? Would I be able to do a For Each in VB6 to iterate over these interfaces? Should I use the generic or non-generic variants of the interfaces?

  I'm running into a problem where a Server 2003 SP2 box has started crashing roughly once an hour, BSODing out with the message that fltmgr.sys is probably the cause. I ran dumpchk.exe on the memory.dmp file, indicating the same thing. Any thoughts on typical root causes? The following is the error code I'm seeing: Error code 0000007e, parameter1 c0000005, parameter2 f723e087, parameter3 f78cea8c, parameter4 f78ce788.   (Followup to this question) After surviving the first wave of incoming shipments (9 hours of copy/paste), I now believe I have all the requirements. Here is the updated workflow: Monkey collects email attachments (4 Excel spreadsheets, 1 PDF) Monkey creates central database, does complex calculations (right now this is also an Excel spreadsheet) Monkey sends data to two bosses, who set the retail prices independently; first one to reply wins Monkey sends order form to our other warehouses, also Excel Monkey sends spreadsheets to VIP customers, carefully sanitized and formatted (4 different discount categories) Jurily enters the data into the accounting system. I've given up on automating this part, there's too much business logic involved, and the database is a pile of sh^W legacy My question: What technologies would you use for a quick and dirty solution? I'm mostly sold on C#, but coming from a Linux/C++ background, I'm horribly confused about my choices in Microsoft-land. For bonus points: How would you redesign the whole system from the ground up? • Serial numbers generation without user data

  This is a followup to this question. The accepted answer is generally sufficient, but requires user to supply personal information (e.g. name) for generating the key. I'm wondering if it's possible to generate different keys based on a common seed, in a way that program would be able to validate if those keys belong to particular product, but without making this process obvious to the end user. I mean it could be a hash of product ID plus some random sequence of characters, but that would allow user to guess potential new keys. There should be some sort of algorithm difficult to guess.

This yields an InvalidOperationException claiming that the final interface contains no operations. Technically, this is true, however, the inherited interfaces do contain operations. • .htaccess rewrite issue with P

  This is a followup for this question. When I used the proxy flag, I did not know all of its effects. Now I have two more problems, which need to be fixed! The main problem is with user IP addresses, everyone appears to use the server IP. I can't trust http-x-forwarded-for because it is easy to forge headers, and the REMOTE_ADDR just shows the server IP. I used the P flag because it acted as a mask, but Google loads everything with the actual URL. How can I use this subdomain rewrite without the P flag? It needs to be internal. • Slow Firefox Javascript Canvas Performance?

  As a followup from a previous post, I have been trying to track down some slowdown I am having when drawing a scene using Javascript and the canvas element. I decided to narrow down my focus to a REALLY barebones animation that only clears the canvas and draws a single image, once per-frame. This of course runs silky smooth in Chrome, but it still stutters in Firefox. I added a simple FPS calculator, and indeed it appears that my page is typically getting an FPS in the 50's when running Firefox. This doesn't seem right to me, I must be doing something wrong here. • Robust line of sight test on the inside of a polygon with tolerance

  Foreword This is a followup to this question and the main problem I'm trying to solve. My current solution is an hack which involves inflating the polygon, and doing most calculations on the inflated polygon instead. My goal is to remove this step completely, and correctly solve the problem with calculations only. Problem Given a concave polygon and treating all of its edges as if they were walls in a level, determine whether two points A and B are in line of sight of each other, while accounting for some degree of floating point errors. I'm currently basing my solution on a series of line-segment interection tests. In other words: If any of the end points are outside the polygon, they are not in line of sight. If both end points are inside the polygon, and the line segment from A to B crosses any of the edges from the polygon, then they are not in line of sight. If both end points are inside the polygon, and the line segment from A to B does not cross any of the edges from the polygon, then they are in line of sight. But the problem is dealing correctly with all the edge cases. In particular, it must be able to deal with all the situations depicted below, where red lines are examples that should be rejected, and green lines are examples that should be accepted. I probably missed a few other situations, such as when the line segment from A to B is colinear with an edge, but one of the end points is outside the polygon. One point of particular interest is the difference between 1 and 9. In both cases, both end points are vertices of the polygon, and there are no edges being intersected, but 1 should be rejected while 9 should be accepted. How to distinguish these two? I could check some middle point within the segment to see if it falls inside or not, but it's easy to come up with situations in which it would fail. Point 7 was also pretty tricky and I had to to treat it as a special case, which checks if two points are adjacent vertices of the polygon directly. But there are also other chances of line segments being col linear with the edges of the polygon, and I'm still not entirely sure how I should handle those cases. Is there any well known solution to this problem?
