• Trancoding a video with vlc and the MPEG-4 codec with a video bit rate

  When I try to trancode a video with vlc using the MPEG-4 codec and a video bit rate, I get the following error : Either both buffer size and max rate or neither must be specified Here is the command line I used : vlc -vvv myvideo.m2ts --sout-ffmpeg-strict=-2 --sout '#transcode{vcodec=mp4v,vb=2000,acodec=mp4a,ab=96}:standard{access=file,mux=mp4,dst=/path/file.mp4}' It seems that I can't specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec. (If I remove the vb option, it works). So how can I specify a video bit rate with the MPEG-4 codec ?

  I uploaded my video to youtube and the highest resolution it appears as is 360p. This is much lower than what I uploaded. I believe that youtube isn't making higher resolutions available for my video because of its aspect ratio. The video is 720x400. How can I convert this to a different aspect ratio without losing any of the picture or picture quality? I don't care if blank space appears around the video so long as the picture doesn't get stretched horizontally or vertically.

  recently I found a video on the net ( a .mp4 file), and when I had it on my computer with Windows7, I noticed its thumbnail was not the average windows 7 video thumbnail (which looks like a piece of video film with a random picture from the movie), but a custom thumbnail! Looking in the file properties did not help find the correct button to change the thumbnail...so I just wonder how he did it! • Fix for poor hd playback for 11.04 upwards

  Hi guys ive seen loads of posts on this site about poor 720/1080p playback in recent ubuntu versions I had this problem and fixed it so I thought id share it with everyone.... 1 install mplayer 2 install smplayer frontend {in software center} 3 open smplayer 4 go to "OPTIONS" then "PREFRENCES" then "GENRAL" 5 if you have a nvidia card choose "OUTPUT DRIVER" and select "VDPAU" {for ATI or AMD choose xv (0 - ATI Radeon AVIVO video) I dont know if this will work as my card is nvidia but it should) 6 go to performance on the left hand side and set both local and streaming cache to 99999 (this may also fix dvd playback if you set that cache aswell} 7 check the box for "ALLOW HARD FRAME DROP" and set "LOOP FILTER" to skip only on HD 8 Set the "THREDS FOR DECODING OPTION TO THE NUMBER OF CORES YOUR CPU HAS IF YOU HAVE MORE THAN ONE CPU ADD UP ALL THE CORES FOR BEST PERFORMANCE" 9 Enjoy you HD movies again on ubuntu...... • Basic video editor for AVCHD Lite files?

  I have a camera (Panasonic Lumix GF-1) that outputs "AVCHD Lite" files, 720p h264 in a MTS container. I saw this question that said Movie Maker in Windows 7 supports AVCHD...but I just tried, and unfortunately it does not support AVCHD Lite. Are there any free or inexpensive non-linear video editors (NLE) that can natively handle AVCHD Lite files, without requiring some 3rd party driver? If not, are there any 3rd party drivers that are especially stable? (In my experience they usually have some problems...I got AVCHD Lite loading into VirtualDub using a 3rd party plugin, but it's very slow and sometimes crashes, and seeking takes ages.

I'm flexible with the format, but I'd like text on the screen to be legible (i.e. not 320x240). If someone knows of a calculator or something that would let me figure out exactly how I need to structure my video and ISP that'd be handy too.

I tried to plug in the device, and it was properly recognized.   Hello, I'm recording a screencast with CamStudio (http://camstudio.org/) . My computer's screen resolution is 1280*800 , so video's resolution is 1280*800, too. I'm using Microsoft Video 1 codec when recording. I was record 9 minutes video and this video's size is 214 MB . I will upload this video to Youtube. I'm coding a web site at the video, because of this, video must be quality (720p) . I want to reduce file's size, before upload . I'm using Total Video Converter (http://www.effectmatrix.com/total-video-converter/) . • 500 MB Avi video from CD lagging/glitching when reproduced

  I created an extra cd with Nero Burning that contains both audio tracks (I can hear them correctly) and a .avi presentation (pretty big one, 540 MB on a 700 MB cd). The audio is fine but the problem is that when the video is played from the cd (with whatever media player: Windows Media Player, VLC, etc..) it lags/glitches/stutters. I'd like the video to be smooth, how should I burn the video to reduce this effect? I mean: what kind of compression/format and why?

• Video files from another partition or volume does not play

  Some video files from another partition or volume does not display in some video displays but display on another and crashes on others. Seem to play on these video players: vlc smplayer gnome-mplayer Seem to have some issues in these video players: totem -some videos are play while others not banshee -some videos are play while others not bangarang -few videos are play while others not and it crashes and happens also in home folder of filesystem dragon player -crashes and seem not to display any video and happens also in home folder of filesystem Why this happens? Is this a bug? On ubuntu 11.10, every video display play all the video from another partition or from home filesystem.

• Video playback not working in Ubuntu 11.10

  (Ubuntu 11.10, Gnome Classic with Compiz, Nvidia graphics card) This problem occurs with every and all video, whether it's a Youtube video in Firefox, an AVI file in movie player, or any other video. Video simply does not work. When I start any kind of video, the image halts after a second or two. The sound, however, continues. Before it seemed that if I delete all the files in ~/.gstreamer-0.10/, then reboot, the video will play. However this is no longer the case. Manipulating files in that directory does nothing to help the situation. I am now no longer sure this is a gstreamer issue or something else. I am open to any and all possibilities. How can I get video playback to run smoothly on my machine?

• Radeon HD5570 HDMI Video Card 5.1 Audio doesn't work

  I am using Ubuntu and XMBC on my HTPC and have chosen the Radeon HD5570 Video card which has an HDMI output. In the sound preferences there is no surround sound option for the video card just stereo and although I can get sound through it in XBMC, my receiver does not state Dolby Digital on movies that are in fact Dolby so its definitely not giving me the true sound it should. Does this card not support surround sound through HDMI and I somehow missed it? If that is the case does anyone have suggestion that has been tested and works? Id like to know its going to work before investing in yet another video card. UPDATE I purchased a Nvidia GeForce GTS 450, plugged it in, downloaded the proprietary driver from the system control panel, disabled the onboard audio from the BIOS (not sure if this was necessary but I did it anyways), and changed the sound settings to use the new video card. Everything works flawlessly. It was a seemless setup.

  Is there any free (as in beer, and if it's possible as in bird) tool to convert a dvd in the format DVC-PRO HD 1080 to a normal/standard dvd format so that I can play it on a normal DVD player? EDIT: I changed the wording a bit. We've a video in DVC-PRO HD 1080 but as far as I know it is a proprietary format. We'd like to create a standard dvd out of it. I'm not really in video encoding and dvd conversion. I thought I need to be more precise. VLC currently doesn't support DVC-PRO HD 1080.

• HD flash video lagging on LG R400

  I'm installing Ubuntu on my friends laptop. An LG R400 with ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 graphics drivers. On Windows Vista which runs pretty slow the HD flash videos 1080p on Youtube vimeo and other places work with no problems, but on Ubuntu i can not really play videos above 480p Above that they are lagging. That annoys me because i know he will use them, and how am i supposed to convince him that Ubuntu is the way to go if it can not play the videos that windows vista can? Unity 3d is working fine so i think the graphics drivers is working, and when i download the hd videos and play as mp4 in vlc they also work fine. lspci -nn | grep VGA shows the following: 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller [0300]: Advanced Micro Devices [AMD] nee ATI Mobility Radeon X2300 Hope that someone can help me convince my friend that Ubuntu is rocking!

  I downloaded a RTMP stream to my desktop. It uses the FLV (Flash) video codec. I do not want to reprocess/transcode/whatever to this video. VirtualDub can delete sections of video and since it's not encoding again the quality is the same and the filesize shrinks. I want to do something similar but instead add keyframes and not encode. What can I use?

• Synchronizing audio and video using MP4Box / ffmpeg to concatenate files

  I have two H.264 encoded MPEG-4 files that I need to concatenate. I have been using MP4Box for this task by first ensuring the files are encoded identically (even went so far as to compare output from h264_parse on their video tracks) and then concatenating with this command: MP4Box -cat file1.mp4 -cat file2.mp4 output_file.mp4 This works and the output file is playable, but on playback in Quicktime or VLC the second video's audio starts too soon, making the entire second part of the concatenated file out of sync. I have tried reencoding the output through ffmpeg with -vcodec copy and -acodec copy but the sync issue persists. I have also tried converting to MPEG-2 format first, concatenating with a simple cat file1.mpg file2.mpg > output.mpg and reencoding the result with ffmpeg. This was even worse. I know that I can pass commands to MP4Box to adjust the start time of the audio track, but I am trying to do this programmatically for any input video (in the same encoding of course). I am looking for possible solutions that would not require human intervention / manual adjustments. Or, at least, an understanding of what is happening to make the second part of the concatenated video go out of sync.

  Video in VLC or SMplayer is often in black and white with washed-out colors in the wrong place (translated considerably). Moreover, the last video image is often visible when a new video is started and persist as long as the new video is running. Colors have a recognizable shape (e.g. a persons clothes or face), but can be obviously incorrect (e.g. green or purples faces). This is independent of the format of the videos (mp4, mkv, wmv). Sometimes all problems disappear when a new video is started, but often only a reboot restores normal video. Ubuntu was upgraded to 14.04 and is fully updated. • Trouble adding video controls to video selected by XML comboBox

  Hello, it's been a few years since I've touched flash, so perhaps I'm just overlooking something. If anyone could look at the code and offer any suggestions that would be awesome. What's working, I select a video from a combobox that is populated from an XML file, pick the video and it plays. I've been trying to add pause/play, stop, forward and reverse functionality, once I get that to work I also want to add a video scrubber(slider), and previous/next buttons to go to the previous/next video as listed in the xml file. At the moment I have a component button on the stage called playButton, which I'm trying to use for pause/play functionality. Below is my code, the player control is at the very bottom.
