• How to detect Javascript pop-up notifications in WatiN?

  I have a, what seems to be, rather common scenario I'm trying to work through. I have a site that accepts input through two different text fields. If the input is malformed or invalid, I receive a Javascript pop-up notification. I will not always receive one, but I should in the event of (like I said earlier) malformed data, or when a search result couldn't be found. How can I detect this in WatiN? A quick Google search produced results that show how to click through them, but I'm curious as to whether or not I can detect when I get one? In case anyone is wondering, I'm using WatiN to do some screen scraping for me, rather than integration testing :) Thanks in advance! Ian

• Is RAID 0 or JBOD better for home media server?

  I have an external two-bay drive enclosure (the OWC Mercury Elite-AL Pro) connected to a Mac Mini (my home media server) over FireWire 800. I'm streaming media to other computers in the house over wired gigabit. I have two 1.5 TB drives that I'm using independently right now. The media is on one, and I'm mirroring the files to the other drive at night as a backup. But as I approach filling up the drive I'm wanting to span those two drives together to give me a total of about 3 TB, and then buy another drive for backups. The external enclosure supports both RAID 0 and JBOD, but I'm not clear on which would be better in this situation. Would RAID 0 provide any performance improvements over JBOD for streaming video (possibly several streams at once? How does each affect the MTBF of the drives? In general, should I choose RAID 0, JBOD, or keep them independent?

• What would I need to do to clone a Linux install to another machine?

  Basically, I want to make an image of one Linux install I have, and distribute it over similar (if not identical) spec machines on a network. I know it is possible, however am unsure of what needs to be done before I make the image of the install to ensure it works correctly on all machines. First think I know needs to be done, is remove all interface configuration, as I assume it would just jump to eth1 (and possibly use the same MAC), as it wont locate the network interface it had before, how would I do this so it auto detects and goes to eth0 again? Is there anything else I would need to do to the install before I make its image?

  Does anyone know how to get the blur event to fire on the document for the iPhone? I'm trying to get it to fire either when a user changes windows in Safari, or when they open their bookmarks or when they decide to add the page to their homescreen. But none of these are firing it. Here's my code: $(document).blur( function () { document.title = "Ian Taylor"; }); I've tried "document", "window", "'body'". Nothing seems to work.

• What can lead to a zone memory exhaustion and how Nginx reacts to it?

  What is a possible scenario for exhausting the memory designated to a connection zone with limit_conn_zone directive and what are the implication in this case? Suppose I have this in my configuration: http { limit_conn_zone $binary_remote_addr zone=connzone:1m; ... server { limit_conn connzone 5; which, according to the documentation, allocates 16000 states for connzone on a 64-bit server. It also says that If the storage for a zone is exhausted, the server will return error 503 (Service Temporarily Unavailable) to all further requests. Well, Ok. But what does it mean on practice? When does this happen? Who receives those 503s? Does it mean that if the number of IPs somehow associated with connzone hits 16000 everyone gets a 503 and it's all over? How does Nginx decide? The documentation is weirdly vague on this. So, considering the example config, who would actually get a 503 and under which circumstances and how would things go from there? Same with request zones?

• On Windows XP, Start > Run "My Documents" sometimes doesn't work

  On all of my home computers, I can enter "my documents" into the Start Run prompt and the My Documents folder of the current profile will open up. What's more, I can continue typing subfolders, files, etc. and auto-complete works and it's smart and enjoyable. I can't check at the moment, but I'm almost positive entries like "My Pictures" and "My Music" also go to their correct folders. On my work computers, if I enter "my documents" into the Start Run prompt, I get the following error: "Windows cannot find 'my'. Make sure you typed the name correctly, and then try again. To search for a file, click the Start Button, and then click Search." I can sort of circumvent this by creating a shortcut in my PATH named 'my' that points to My Documents folder, but this doesn't solve the auto-complete option (and it's otherwise imperfect, of course, because "my pictures" or "my music" all direct to the same place. A google search doesn't provide much help on this, although it does identify a poster in 2007 with this same question at another board: http://www.msfn.org/board/lofiversion/index.php/t124813.html (Login required, but Google cache available here: http://preview.tinyurl.com/ygxhwwl) Is this just a limitation of the networks belonging to a domain, or is there some way I can get this functionality back?   Hi all, if you wanted to manipulate the data in a table in a postgresql database using some python (maybe running a little analysis on the result set using scipy) and then wanted to export that data back into another table in the same database, how would you go about the implementation? Is the only/best way to do this to simply run the query, have python store it in an array, manipulate the array in python and then run another sql statement to output to the database? • Windows 7 Slowness following Virtual PC and Visual Studio Install

  I'm running Windows 7 32bit on a 3.2ghz Pentium D with 2gb RAM and a 1TB SATA hard drive. My system was running as fast as it ever has until I installed Visual Studio and Virtual PC a few days ago. Ever since - regardless of whether either application has been running the system has been running incredibly slowly. For example flash video plays jumpily, 3D games that used to run fine are now unplayable and even the smallest amount of multitasking makes the system unusable. I'm confident there is no virus or other such things present following scans in safemode and I'm fairly confident I've made no other changes to my system. Any ideas - I've run out of things to try!

• Can I get ethernet out of my Verizon FIOS set-top box?

  Setup: my home network is long & skinny, and the FIOS-connected router is all the way at one of the apartment. At the other end, far away (and a floor higher) is my HD TV, which gets a cable-TV signal from a Verizon set-top box that is coax-connected back to the FIOS on-premises equipment. Wi-Fi won't work, the apartment is too stretched out, with old, thick walls and floors. Goal: I think there are three ways to get ethernet back to where the HD TV is: 1) run a cable! this isn't crazy but isn't cheap either (my building won't let me do it, it involves hiring an electrician because the cable would run partly through the public hallway ceiling) 2) split the coax near the TV and put in... a MoCA device? 3) somehow tease the set-top box, which has an RJ-11 (ethernet) port on the back, to give me network access. Question: any other choices? and, is one choice better than the others? #3 is by far the most desirable because it would involve the least wiring -- but I can't find any resources to help make it happen. #2 is a bit scary, I don't want to degrade service to the TV or anywhere else for that matter.

  Hi guys, I have tried to take apart the code, but can't seem to replicate it. On the BBC weather homepage, http://news.bbc.co.uk/weather/, you will see a little help quetionmark in a circle in the top right corner or some of the boxes. When you click on it, it brings up a nice help popup, that looks a little like facebox. The main thing I like about this, is the little arrow that points back to the help button to the right of the container. Facebox is just a standard square. • Navigation keys on numeric keypad randomly stop working

  Shortly after a restart, the arrow and navigation (Home, End...) keys on my numeric keypad will randomly stop working, and -- regardless of the state of the NumLock -- return only numbers. I notice this the most in browser applications (like this edit box) but the same effect is true on the command line and in desktop applications like Word. I swapped keyboards and now use a Microsoft keyboard (both are USB keyboards) but the same behavior persists. I also tried a clean boot to clean out startup programs but this made no difference. The separate arrow keys and navigation keys between the QWERTY keys and the numeric keypad work fine, but my strong preference (dating back to DOS and MS Flight Simulator) is to use the navigation keys in the numeric keypad.

  I just installed Win7 64bit on a new hard drive, and I created a user account through the OOBE. I want to make my user account a standard user. However, if I go into "User Accounts" and select "Change my account type", the standard user option is greyed out--this account apparently has to be an administrator. I thought maybe it was the only admin account on the machine, so I tried to create a new user account named "Administrator", but was told I couldn't, because one already exists. What gives? What do I have to do to run as a standard user?

• SQL Azure Federation - how much data before performance benefits?

  To avoid premature optimization, I don't want to implement SQL Azure's Federation too early. Is there a rule of thumb for how much data a table would need to have before seeing performance benefits from sharding? I know there won't be a precise answer as there are too many variables to consider, especially with much of SQL Azure's resources being hidden/unknown. To put it into several, more concrete examples, would Federation improve performance in any of the below table scenarios: 100,000 rows (~ 200 MB) 1,000,000 rows (~ 2 GB) 10,000,000 rows (~ 20 GB) 100,000,000 rows (~ 200 GB) For the sake of elaboration, we can assume this is the largest table that would be federated, which consists of order details, which is joined to an orders table with a 'customer_id' foreign key, which would be the distribution key. This is a fairly standard multi-tenant, CRUD order entry system, with a typical assortment of reporting needs (customer order totals by day/month/year, etc).

  Hi Ok dealing with Partial Loops I want to do several things Perhaps pass in extra variables - seen it done like this echo $this-partialLoop('Loop.phtml', array('data' = $data, 'var1' = foo)); But this does not seem to work - I can not extra the data using $this-var $this-data-var or $data-var not sure how to access the data in the loop Sutotals for columns - need a way of resetting variables or passing in a default value - linked to the above I suppose ie $subtotal += rowTotal; In the view that calls the partial I would like to get access to the subtotal values generated so I can display these in another table below. • How can I tell if a given hWnd is still valid?

  Please forgive my ignorance, I'm completely new when it comes to winforms programming. I'm using a third-party class that spawns an instance of Internet Explorer. This class has a property, hWnd, that returns the hWnd of the process. Later on down the line, I may want to reuse the instance of the application if it still exists, so I need to tell my helper class to attach to it. Prior to doing that, I'd like to know if the given hWnd is still valid, otherwise I'll spawn another instance. How can I do this in C# & .NET 3.5? • How do I revoke access to java applet on OSX when there's an error in the control panel.

  I can't access the screenr.com java applet on my mac. Poking around the java preferences, I saw an odd entry with a red circle (I assume that means to deny access?) for it in the security section. • Suddenly getting lock timeouts with MySQL

  We've got a web app hosted on Amazon Web services. Our database is a multi-az RDS MySQL server running 5.1.57 and 3-4 app servers talk to it. Today, we started seeing a lot of errors along the lines of "Lock wait timeout exceeded; try restarting transaction" - almost 1% of POST requests are seeing this. There have been no modifications to the code running on the site. There have been no schema changes. We haven't had a big spike in traffic. I've been looking at the processes running, and none seem out of control. I tried scaling our RDS instance from a small to a large, with no effect. Two days ago, Amazon had some outages. As part of the recovery from that, our RDS server, and our app servers ended up in different availability zones, but all within the same region. But yesterday, everything was fine so I'm not convinced that's related. The lock timeouts are in different types of requests and occur in different InnoDB tables. I have noticed the number of open connections jumped when we started seeing problems, but they may be a symptom and not a cause. What are my next steps in debugging this?
