• Confirm that a dns zone is served by a nameserver

  We currently have a domain which has custom nameservers. Our host has their own nameservers. I'd like to switch our domain to use our host's nameservers for a while. Our host tells me that their nameservers hold a replica of our dns zone, but I'd like to confirm this before I switch. Is there a command line tool I can use that I can use to answer the question "does this nameserver know the dns zone of this domain?" Hope that makes sense! Thanks, Adam

• Save Zone Implementation in Asteroids

  I would like to implement a safe zone for asteroids so that when the ship gets destroyed, it shouldn't be there unless it is safe from other asteroids. • What is a good solution for an intranet video portal (YouTube-like) site?

  I would like an easy-to-setup site to handle videos to be viewed internally by my company. YouTube is essentially the perfect solution except for its being public. I'm looking for a place where a few people can upload videos, and the system will return a page where they can watch that video in a browser. I figure this would involve a dedicated Web server to run the Web application and process the videos. I've searched and I don't think such a system exists, but I perhaps there's one out there in its infancy that doesn't rank high on Google yet. Essentially the site I'm looking for is what MediaWiki is to Wikis, or what StackExchange is to Q&A sites, but for videos. Thanks in advance!

• Testing domains on intranet/local network?

  This may sound like a very silly question, but how could I setup domains ( eg www.foo.com ) on my local network? I know that all a domain is, is just a name registered to a name server and that nameserver has a zone record, and in the zone record there are several records of which the A Record is the most important in dictating where the lookup goes to, which machine it should point to. I basically want to make it so that I can refer to my other computer/webserver as 'www.foo.com' and make my local sites accessible by that, mess with virtualhost records in Apache and zone records for the domain except locally so I can explore and fiddle around and learn instead of having to rely on the domains I own on a public registrar that I could only access through the internet. Once again I apologize if this is a silly question, or if I'm completely thinking backwards. Background information: My OS is Debian, I'm a novice at Linux. I've done very small edits in zone records on a Bind9 Server but that's the extent of my networking experience.

• BIND no longer responds to AXFR Requests

  Recently we moved our primary external DNS server. It has three caching DNS slaves in front of it provided by our ISP. They've told us they've started getting access denied requests when doing zone transfers (AXFR). If I add in my own IPs to the allow-transfer list, I also get a transfer failed when using dig with the AXFR argument. • best practice to obtain time zone for iPhone vs iPod Touch

  I am creating an app that requires the users current time zone. If the device being used is an iPhone and the user has their Time Zone set to automatically change, I think I can be fairly confident that localTimeZone or systemTimezone will give me the correct time zone for the user's location. If on the other hand the device is an iPod Touch, the time zone returned by localTimeZone and systemTimeZone appears to always be whatever time zone is set in the Date & Time settings, regardless of the user's actual location. I tried using location services but, while the lat/long is being provided properly, the time zone offset in the timesStamp I am getting is always the same as whatever the user has set for their time zone setting. Any suggestions? John

• Should we deploy a Webkit browser for our intranet applications?

  At my place of employment, we are increasingly finding it difficult to develop for IE, which was historically the easiest browser to target, from an intranet-app point of view. It was already deployed. It already understood NTLM authentication, thus well integrated with our domain-level security. It had neat, albeit non-standard features such as XMLDOM and XmlHTTP. Now, we are increasingly irritated by issues presented by IE: There are several versions: IE 7, 8, and soon 9 beta, which all have slightly different issues related to performance, functionality (especially re:security and zones), and aesthetics. IE 7 and 8 are slower than Webkit-based browsers. Period. There are technology limitations such as missing canvas element, CSS bugs, etc. that make it hard to use 3rd party packages or even consistently write code across IE versions. Users are increasingly using Firefox or Chrome, even for intranet use. Does anyone have experience with making a transition? Any advice would be welcome.

• How to make a system time-zone sensitive?

  I need to implement time zones in a very large and old Delphi system, where there's a central SQL Server database and possibly hundreds of client installations around the world in different time zones. The application already interacts with the database by only using the date/time of the database server. So, all the time stamps saved in both the database and on the client machines are the date/time of the database server when it happened, never the time of the client machine. So, when a client is about to display the date/time of something (such as a transaction) which is coming from this database, it needs to show the date/time converted to the local time zone. This is where I get lost. I would naturally assume there should be something in SQL to recognize the time zone and convert a DateTime field dynamically. I'm not sure if such a thing exists though. If so, that would be perfect, but if not, I need to figure out another way. This Delphi system (multiple projects) utilizes the SQL Server database using ADO components, VCL data-aware controls, and QuickReports (using data sources). So, there's many places where the data goes directly from the database query to rendering on the screen, without any code to actually put this data on the screen. In the end, I need to know when and how should I get the properly converted time? There must be a standard method for this, and I'm hoping SQL Server 2008 R2 has this covered...

Its been glued together loosely over the last couple of years and now its my job to maintain it. I'm looking for a search engine that I can host myself that ideally: Allows for searching the Blog / Forum databases directly if given the database information and tables to search. Handles most text documents (PDF/DOC/ODF) Is open source, or allows access to the source code once purchased It doesn't matter to me what language or platform it is written in. Normally, I'd just use Google site search, but that's not an option for an intranet.

• Created a new zone in DNS manager - can't get site bindings to work in iis 7

  Firstly I would like to say that I am a noob when it comes to DNS, I am a web developer and I am trying to setup an intranet site for a charity. I have windows server 2008 and I installed both iis 7 and dns manager. In IIS I have this binding that works - Type: http:// IP Address: 192.168.1.9 Port: 80 Host name: My host name is empty and when I try to navigate to this website on the network, the http code is 200 and the page renders. Now if I try Host name of test.organization.intranet Internet explorer says "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" and the server response is aborted. In DNS manager I created a new forward lookup zone of organization.intranet I did this through the configure a dns server wizard and I created a host (A) with the same IP as the one being used in IIS. The full Host name is test.organization.intranet but it doesn't work. Maybe I am missing something obvious because it's not an area of IT that I know very well, but I am stuck for why I can't get it to work.

• Are there any open-source / free site analytics solutions that are intranet deployable?

  There are plenty of statistics/analytics providers for Internet deployed software (e.g. Google Analytics), but I'm looking for an analytics tool to integrate into a LAN/intranet based web application. I'm aware of AWStats, but I'd prefer something with a design similar to Google Analytics, where a Javascript callback can be embedded into the app and call back to an analytics server. This doesn't require any sort of extra application server configuration and access to run. I'm thinking there's nothing available that isn't proprietary / pay-for, but I'd love to be told I'm wrong!

• Problems forwarding zone to another DNS server.

  I have a authorative DNS server at 83.248.21.18 which are authorative for the domain "finahemgoteborg.se". Now my registrar is requiring me to have 2 DNS servers for the domain, so I would now want the machine 85.228.103.141 just forward all incoming queries for "finahemgoteborg.se" to the 83.248.21.18 server. In the 85.228.103.141 BIND server, I have the following config: zone "finahemgoteborg.se" in { type forward; forwarders {83.248.21.18;}; }; But the problem is that 85.228.103.141 is still responding with "REFUSED" when querying it for example www.finahemgoteborg.se A record. How can I fix it. I do NOT want to set up a master/slave situation, just one nameserver that forwards to a another.   You might assume that if you have root access to an Oracle Solaris zone, you'd be able to change the root's IP address. If so, you'd proceed along these lines ... • ASPX page renders differently when reached on intranet vs. internet?

  This is so odd to me.. I have IIS 5 running on XP and it's hosting a small ASP.Net app for our LAN that we can access by using the computer name, virtual directory, and page name (http://matt/smallapp/customers.aspx), but you can also hit that IIS server and page from the internet because I have a public IP that my firewall routes to the "Matt" computer (like http://213.202.3.88/smallapp/customers.aspx [just a made-up IP]). Don't worry, I have Windows domain authentication is in place to protect the app from anonymous users. So all the abovea parts works fine. But what's weird is that the Border of the divs on the page are rendered much thicker when you access the page from the intranet, versus the internet, (I'm using IE8) and also, some of the div layout (stretching and such) acts differently. Why would it render different in the same browser based on whether it was reached from the LAN vs. the internet? It does NOT do this in FireFox. So it must be just an IE8 thing. All the CSS for the divs is right in the HTML page, so I do not think it is a caching matter of a CSS file. • flash object not working on intranet anymore?

• Question about Displaying Documents and the CQWP in MOSS 2007

  My organization is in the process of converting our intranet over to a SharePoint solution. Part of this intranet will be the movement and organization of all our internal documents. Currently, we have 11 pages of document links, each with its own subheadings. So far I have it set where each document has a custom field called "Page" with a check box list of all the document pages on the intranet site. On each individual page, I have setup a Content Query Web Part that displays the documents that have the corresponding Page value set (i.e. if a document Page value has been checked for "HR" it will appear on the HR page). The goal of this setup is to allow the nontechnical personal who will be responsible for the maintenance of the documents to be able to upload new documents to the documents list and note on which pages they should appear on without having to manually update the pages themselves. The problem that I am having is that I cannot seem to find a good way to sort the documents into their subheadings once they are on the appropriate page. I could create individual check boxes for each page/subheading combination, but this would create a list of approximately 50-75 items. Does anyone have any ideas as to how I could accomplish this, either via CQWP or by different means? Goals/Requirements of Installation Allow Intranet documents to be maintained by nontechnical personnel Display documents on the appropriate pages without user having to edit actual page or web part Denote document page location using user settable document attributes (if possible) Maintain current intranet organization and workflow Use only one document list without subdirectories NOTE: I am aware that this is not the most efficient or elegant way to do things, but these are the requirements I have been given for the project.

• Is it possible to push DNS search suffices from DNS server to client?

  Our (active directory, windows-server-based) intranet used to be called "intranet", and DNS worked fine for windows machines and iPads/Android devices. We have changed it to be "apps.intranet", and it still works for windows machines, but no longer for iPads/Android devices. I think this is because out windows clients are configured to append .company.com when searching DNS, to make it a fully qualified lookup (this search suffix list is pushed to the PCs via AD group policies). I must admit, though, I don't know why it worked with just "intranet"! Does anyone know if it's possible to get DNS to "tell" the iPads/Android devices to append .company.com ... or how we can make it work some other way (but still using the multi-label, non-qualified DNS names) ?   I have a test server that is running Ubuntu Server in a windows network. Networking is configured as follows auto eth0 iface eth0 inet dhcp hostname ca the command cat /etc/hostname returns ca. But when I use the command host 10.49.156.196 (its current IP address) from another machine on the network, it returns as follows: 196.156.49.10.in-addr.arpa domain name pointer owner-pc.xxxxx.xxx I can access the machine via SSH and browser using IP address, but not by name ca Any suggestions? I tried installing samba/nmbd as suggested in another post, but to no avail.
