  • SharePoint 2010: Architecture and Planning information

    Recently I have been delivering Design and Planning Sessions at client sites, and as of recent SharePoint 2010 has been part of that mix. After the activity that goes on during those sessions getting towards the end of them is always a cross roads for clients.  Why?  Because it is time to kick the wheels.  Remind them, and remember, this is not a 1 or 4 weeks ordeal.  This has to be very well planned.   • One of my VMs went boom using Virtual Box and how it got fixed

    I am running an HP Envy 15, 16GB and 500GB (7200 RPM) Hard drive. Had a VM configured from another environment, created the virtual machine config file on Virtual Box, everything seemed ok. Fired it up, and it was  s   l   o   w, it took close to 10 minutes for it to load, and about 5 more to see Windows was in the process of loading before the BSOD.  Thought, maybe, just maybe it will not happen again … oh was I wrong. Frustration had already hit an all time high with this configuration and the number of issues I’ve had. How I did the troubleshooting … The best thing to do (IMO) is to step back, and gather your tools to debug this situation. Tools:  Virtual Box command line tools, Windows Debug. Virtual Box comes with a pretty good set of tools to examine, migrate and overall tasks to deal with VMs. The firs step:  use VBoxManage to prevent the VM from rebooting after the error to get enough time to really dig into the BSOD issue. Command used:   VBoxManage setextradata VMNAME "VBoxInternal/PDM/HaltOnReset" 1 Once this was done, the error reported was an “Inaccessible boot device” coming from a “Stop – 7B” type of error on the BSOD. The issue I had with this, my VM was configured to use a virtual SATA controller, and thought Windows 2008 R2 would handle this fine … again wrong!  Because the integration tools from the other product where wanting to take effect that was throwing everything off. The fix The fix was almost handed to me, edited the configuration for the VM, removed the SATA controller from it, added the virtual hard drive under an IDE controller, boot up and voilà … it works! I was then able to install the Virtual Box guest tools and such, but have decided to favor “keep on working” over “let’s try SATA again”

  • And just like that, there went February

    The best intentions were having me at perhaps posting more than twice a month, and here we are and … well it has been busy. There has been a lot of SharePoint 2010 already in this first number of weeks of the year, a good amount of TFS 2010, but even better working quite actively on two topics that I enjoy quite a bit … Windows Azure and Application Lifecycle Management.  And there is more to come around those two. Through the influencers program with Geekswithblogs and Discountasp.net I got access to a hosted TFS solution that I am currently testing and will be posting my findings and documenting a good amount of information on that process. Another great resource has been fpweb.net, and there will be more details on this too.  Pretty exciting stuff! That is what is going on and what will be coming on here shortly.

  • Managing TFS Workspaces

    You are the administrator (or since you may be the one that knows the most about it) and you need to do some cleanup on what is connected and perhaps even cleanup after people that have left the organization and left some code checked out in their workspace. What permissions do I need? You will need to have Administer Workspaces permission to perform the following tasks. The commands. In order to execute the commands, you will need to open a Visual Studio Command Prompt, once there you will be able to use the tf command.  This has a nice set of options, which I will be providing a listing for later on in another post. To list all workspaces registered: tf workspaces /collection:<url to your TPC> <workspace>;<owner> To delete a specific workspace: tf workspace /delete /server:<url to your TPC> <workspace>;<owner> If for any reason a workspace has embedded spaces, then surround that with “” (double quotes).

  • WordPress for Windows Phone 7

    Slowly but surely apps have been coming out for Windows Phone 7, I must admit that was my biggest concern on moving from the iPhone to the Windows Phone.  Not the fact apps would come slowly, but when they would come.  The iPhone side of things had very nice apps, and moving into a not so populated app landscape was an interesting thought. Anyway, yes there are apps I miss … but now it is one less! WordPress released the “for Windows Phone 7” app. Great experience and layout for the tool.   • Strange behavior: save video recorded within app?

    I allow the user to record a video within my app, then later play it again. When a user records a video, I save the URL of the video, then play the video later from the saved URL. I save the video both in the Photos app and in my app. If I delete the video within the photos app, it still plays. After about 7 days, the video gets deleted. I think I am saving in my tmp directory, but i'm not sure.   • Different values for Time.now when using activerecord

    I have this weird situation: When I do on rails console Time.now or Time.zone.now I get the same values (suppose they run at the sime time: 2014-06-05 23:38:06 -0300) But when I use Time.now in a query like: Match.where("datetime = ?", Time.now) it returns the time 3 hours ahead! .to_sql output: SELECT `matches`.* FROM `matches` WHERE (datetime = '2014-06-06 02:38:06') any thoughts on that?   • 30 in 60 Contest | Standings Update

    Hi, Should be a simple one. Database is mydb. One of the columns is mydata. What SELECT query do I need in order to select the top 3 occurring results from mydata, but sorted alphabetically? For example, if my data is this: mydata ====== kilo (x 1 occurrence) lima (x 9 occurrences) golf (x 5 occurrences) echo (x 9 occurrences) zulu (x 8 occurrences) How do I get it to return "echo, lima, zulu", which are the top three frequently occurring entries sorted alphabetically?     Hi all, I believe this is another easy one for you LINQ masters out there. Is there any way I can separe a List into several separate lists of SomeObject, using the item index as the delimiter of each split? Let me exemplify: I have a List<SomeObject> and I need a List<List<SomeObject>> or List<SomeObject>[], so that each of these resulting lists will contain a group of 3 items of the original list (sequentially). eg.: Original List: [a, g, e, w, p, s, q, f, x, y, i, m, c] Resulting lists: [a, g, e], [w, p, s], [q, f, x], [y, i, m], [c] I'd also need the resulting lists size to be a parameter of this function. I need everytime a user login the application, to setup a new provider linked with his own database. All databases have the same structure. So literally I want to know the length of time between the 2 values. 14:10:20 - 10:05:15 = 02:05:05 So the result would be 02:05:05. How would I be able to achieve this using C#? 14:10:20 is the format I saved it in in my database.

I am fairly new to XML files, so what I am after may be quite obvious but I just cant find what I am looking for on the net. The format of the XML results I need are: <data> <event start="May 28 2006 09:00:00 GMT" end="Jun 15 2006 09:00:00 GMT" isDuration="true" title="Writing Timeline documentation" image="http://simile.mit.edu/images/csail-logo.gif"> A few days to write some documentation </event> </data> My table structure is: name VARCHAR(50), description VARCHAR(255), startDate DATETIME, endDate DATETIME (I am not too interested in the XML fields image or isDuration at this point in time). I have tried: SELECT [name] ,[description] ,[startDate] ,[endTime] FROM [testing].[dbo].[time_timeline] FOR XML RAW('event'), ROOT('data'), type Which gives me: <data> <event name="Test1" description="Test 1 Description...." startDate="1900-01-01T00:00:00" endTime="1900-01-01T00:00:00" /> <event name="Test2" description="Test 2 Description...." startDate="1900-01-01T00:00:00" endTime="1900-01-01T00:00:00" /> </data> What I am missing, is the description needs to be outside of the event attributes, and there needs to be a tag.   • Determine if e-mail message can be successfully sent

    Hello Everyone, I am working in a mailing application in C# and, basically, I need to be able to determine which recipients successfully received the message, which ones did not, no matter what was the failure reason. In summary, I need an exception to be thrown whenever the email address does not exist, for example. However, SmtpClient.Send does not throw an exception in this case, so I'd need to monitor the delivery failure replies and parse them, maybe. I know this is not a simple task, so I'd ask you experts some tips on how to handle the main issues with email sending. Thanks in advance!!
