• Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge Winners

  Originally posted by Jake Kuramoto on The Apps Lab blog. Now that OpenWorld 2012 has wrapped, I have time to tell you all about what happened. Maybe you recall that Noel (@noelportugal) and I were running a modified hackathon during the show, the Oracle Social Network Developer Challenge. Without further ado, congratulations to Dimitri Gielis (@dgielis) and Martin Giffy D’Souza (@martindsouza) on their winning entry, an integration between Oracle APEX and Oracle Social Network that integrates feedback and bug submission with Oracle Social Network Conversations, allowing developers, end-users and project leaders to view and discuss the feedback on their APEX applications from within Oracle Social Network. Update: Bob Rhubart of OTN (@brhubart) interviewed Dimitri and Martin right after their big win. Money quote from Dimitri when asked what he’d buy with the $500 in Amazon gift cards, “Oracle Social Network.” Nice one. In their own words: In the developers perspective it’s important to get feedback soon, so after a first iteration and end-users start to test, they can give feedback of the application. Previously it stopped there, and it was up to the developer to communicate further with email, phone etc. With OSN every feedback and communication gets logged and other people can see the discussion immediately as well. For the end users perspective he can now communicate in a more efficient way to not only the developers, but also between themselves. Maybe many end-users (in different locations) would like to change some behaviour, by using OSN they can see the entry somebody put in with a screenshot and they can just start to chat about it. Some key technical end users can have lighten the tasks of the development team by looking at the feedback first and start to communicate with their peers. For the project manager he has now the ability to really see what communication has taken place in certain areas and can make decisions on that. Later, if things come up again, he can always go back in OSN and see what was said at that moment in time. Integrating OSN in the APEX applications enhances the user experience, makes the lives of the developers easier and gives a better overview to project managers. Incidentally, you may already know Dimitri and Martin, since both are Oracle Ace Directors. I ran into Martin at the Ace Director briefings Friday before the conference started, and at that point, he wasn’t sure he’d have time to enter the Challenge. After some coaxing, he and Dimitri agreed to give it a go and banged out their entry on Tuesday night, or more accurately, very early Wednesday morning, the day of the Challenge judging. I think they said it took them about four hours of hardcore coding to get it done, very much like a traditional hackathon, which is essentially a code sprint from idea to finished product. • ConfirmButtonExtender using ModalPopupExtender fails in UpdatePanel after partial postback?

  Hello, We're trying to add a more fancy looking confirm messages than the regular JavaScript-confirm message to our delete-buttons in a list of comments on our site. To accomplish this we're trying to use the ConfirmButtonExtender together with a ModalPopupExtender. The comments are displayed using a ListView inside a UpdatePanel so that the paging of the ListView doesn't reload the entire page. Using the ConfirmButtonExtender works fine the first time the list is loaded but if we for instance go to the second page of comments using the pager, the ConfirmButtonExtender doesn't work anymore. The extender shows up when clicking Delete but when I click OK the page makes a full reload without triggering the delete event. Has anyone experienced the same problem and found a solution to it? • What's the best way to refresh a UITableView within a UINavigationController hierarchy

  Hi, I'm pretty new to iPhone development and have struggled to find what I consider to be a neat way around this problem. I have a user interface where a summary of record data is displayed in a table inside a navigation controller. When the user clicks the accessory button for a row, a new view is pushed onto the navigation controller revealing a view where the user can edit the data in the corresponding record. Once done, the editing view is popped from the navigation controller's stack and the user is returned to the table view. My problem is that when the user returns to the table view, the table still shows the state of the data before the record was edited. I must therefore reload the table data to show the changes. It doesn't seem possible to reload the table data before it is displayed as the call only updates displayed records. Reloading it after the table has been displayed results in the old data changing before the user's eyes, which I'm not too happy with. This seems to me like a pretty normal thing to want to do in an iPhone app. Can anyone please suggest the best practice approach to doing this? I feel like I'm missing something. Cheers - Steve.

• Emgu CV - memory-leaks (memory consumption)

  I am using EmguCV, the OpenCV wrapper for .NET. I am disposing all created objects but my app is still using more and more memory (in release configuration too). I have debugged my app using .NET Memory profiler and get this result: http://img532.imageshack.us/img532/2503/screenqv.png all objects instance count is oscilating but GChandle instance counr is increasing until my machine is unusable. Garbage collector does not release memory (i think). I am using VS 2008 professional, Win7 prof 32-bit, both up to date, and last stable version of emguCV. I can post some app code, if it will help. • Why does this call to jQuery's $.ajax() fire an empty request in Chrome and Firefox?

  Hello, I am trying to call a WCF RESTful service from jQuery. I am using JSON to encode both request and response. The following code functions correctly in IE8: url = 'http://ipv4.fiddler:5683/WeatherWCF/NewBinding/MyService/GetValueFloat'; $.ajax({ url: url, data: '{"alias": "Udetemperatur"}', type: "POST", contentType: "application/json; charset=utf-8", dataType: "text", // not "json" we'll parse success: function(res) { alert('Received response: ' + res); } }); However, in both Firefox and Chrome, res contains an empty string. • Titanium webview bug or "feature"? Numbers converted to telephone links

  I can't stop Titanium's webview from converting numbers to telephone links. For instance, let's say I programmatically set the innerHTML of a div called test to 96840664702 and then write javascript... alert(document.getElementById('test').innerHTML In Mobile Safari on the iPhone, Firefox, etc., the alert will read "96840664702". If I point Titanium's webview to the same page, the alert will read: <a href="tel:96840664702" x-apple-data=detectors="true">96840664702</a> How can I globally disable the data-detectors? I tried a couple meta-tags... <meta name=”format-detection” content=”telephone=no” > <meta name="x-" http-equiv="x-rim-auto-match" forua="true" content="none"/> ... but they didn't work. I couldn't find a reference for a meta tag that specifically mentioned Apple's detectors. Again, it's only a problem in Titanium's webview. It works everywhere else.

• How to intercept touches events on a MKMapView or UIWebView objects?

  Hello, I'm not sure what i'm doing wrong but I try to catch touches on a MKMapView object. • Query only the first detail record for each master record

  If I have the following master-detail relationship: owner_tbl auto_tbl --------- -------- owner --- owner auto year And I have the following table data: owner_tbl auto_tbl --------- -------- john john, corvette, 1968 john, prius, 2008 james james, f-150, 2004 james, cadillac, 2002 james, accord, 2009 jeff jeff, tesla, 2010 jeff, hyundai, 1996 Now, I want to perform a query that returns the following result: john, corvette, 1968 jeff, hyundai, 1996 james, cadillac, 2002 The query should join the two tables, and sort all the records on the "year" field, but only return the first detail record for each master record. I know how to join the tables and sort on the "year" field, but it's not clear how (or if) I might be able to only retrieve the first joined record for each owner. Three related questions: Can I perform this kind of query using LINQ-to-SQL? Can I perform the query using T-SQL? Would it be best to just create a stored procedure for the query given its likely complexity?

  Hey everyone, What I am trying to do is pass the raw content of an outgoing email to spamassassin in order to calculate a spam score. I am stuck in how I might get the raw content of the email. My C# code currently just constructs the MailMessage and passes it the SmtpClient's Send() method. Before sending, is there a way to get a raw version of the mail message (as the protocol might see it) so that I can pass this to the spamassassin tool for spam assessment? • PayPal IPN - having trouble accessing session data?

  Hello, all. I'm having issues with PayPal IPN integration where it seems I cannot get my solution to read session variables. Basically, in my shop module script, I store the customer's details as provided by PayPal to an orders table. However, I also wish to save products ordered in a transaction to a separate table linked by the order ID. However, it's the second part of the script that's not working, where I loop through the products in the session and then save them to the orders_products table. Is there a reason why the session data not being read? • How can I prevent tab characters etc. from being pasted into an asp.net textbox?

  Hello, I'd like to have an asp.net textbox that people can paste content into and it works like notepad, i.e. no formatting or special characters will get entered. I take text and pass it to a web service which manipulates it and converts it into a tab delimited file. The problem I've experienced is sometimes people copy from MS Word and paste that content in and somehow even the tab characters etc. get passed to the web service. I run routines now to strip that information out but it would be so much easier if the textbox on the web page didn't capture anything but the text itself, i.e. visible characters (numbers, letters, punctuation). Anyone have a suggestion to have a textbox that doesn't capture formatting and non-visual characters? Thank you.

  We have a fairly simple program that's used for creating backups. I'm attempting to parallelize it but am getting an OutofMemoryException within an AggregateExcption. Some of the source folders are quite large, and the program doesn't crash for about 40 minutes after it starts.   Hi all I have created my first silverlight app :-) It has a basic page and connects to a db to populate a list. the connection is done using wcf, so my silverlight connects to a ServiceReference that does the stuff. This all works fine when i run from VisualStudio. My problem is that i am not sure how to host this app. I created an account on aspspider uploaded my default.html, zap file(which i renamed to zip), and Database. this work fine until it needs to connect to the db. What do i need to upload to get the database connection working ? Thanks :-) Martin

• UISegmentedControl Best Practice

  Hi all, I'm trying to work out the "best" way to use a UISegmentedControl for an iPhone application. I've read a few posts here on stackoverflow and seen a few people's ideas, but I can't quite sort out the best way to do this. The posts I'm referring to are: http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1559794/changing-views-from-uisegmentedcontrol and http://stackoverflow.com/questions/1047114/how-do-i-use-a-uisegmentedcontrol-to-switch-views It would seem that the options are: Add each of the views in IB and lay them out on top of each other then show/hide them Create each of the subviews separately in IB, then create a container in the main view to populate with the subview that you need Set up one really tall or really wide UIView and animate it left/right or up/down depending on the selected segment Use a UITabBarController to swap out the subviews - seems silly For tables, reload the table and in cellForRowAtIndex and populate the table from different data sources or sections based on the segment option selected (not the case for my app) So which approach is best for subview/non-table approaches? Which is the easiest to implement? Could you share some sample code to the approach? Thanks!

• Adapting existing HTML/Javascript model to Titanium's latest release (v 0.9)

  In pre-0.9 versions of Titanium, one could simply specify an .html file (local or remote) in the tiapp.xml file and interact with it in the same manner as one would on a website. As of version 0.9, that is no the longer case. One creates their entire app dynamically. Unfortunately, this broke my previous implementation and, other than an updated Kitchen Sink, much of the new model and API calls are not covered in the documentation (e.g., createLabel). So, my question is this... What are the simplest steps for re-creating the previous effect (knowingly forgoing some of the advantages of the Titanium's latest approach if necessary)? My previous implementation was exactly as it functions on the website. The website has a single index.html file with no content other than links to JavaScript and style files. The document body's onload event called the first JavaScript function (located in the main script) and, from that point forth, the entire content was dynamically created. How can I set up the latest version of Titanium so that I am poised to do the exact same thing? BTW: Whereas I previously had the choice to keep the files local or remote, I don't believe that remote access (e.g., simply using the webView widget to point to the website) is viable. That's because pages displayed via the webView do not have access to most of the API. Since the iPhone and Safari browsers do not support the file input type, the only means for uploading files (something my app requires) is calling Titanium's function. Thanks in advance.

• MFMailComposeViewController hangs my app

  Hi, I am trying to add email functionality to my app. I can get the MFMailComposeViewController to display correctly and pre-populate its subject and body, but for some reason when the user clicks on the "Cancel" or "Send" buttons in the nav bar the app just hangs. I inserted a NSLog() statement into the first line of mailComposeController"didFinishWithResult:error and it doesn't even print that line out to the console. Does anybody have an idea what would cause the MFMailComposeViewController to hang like that? • Can the opensocial API remotely search for users in orkut etc.?

  Does anyone know if (and how) I can build an application (Java/Ruby/whatever) doing REST or RPC calls to a social network like Orkut (using opensocial) to search for a user by name or email address? So far I know that I can list all friends for a particular user ID, but I want to search among all users. Would I need to code it as an app/gadget running inside the google sandbox or is there a way to get a list of matching user ID via REST? So far I got this one to work: http://code.google.com/p/opensocial-ruby-client/wiki/GettingStarted. But with this API and the gadget linked there I only get people that are already linked to me... • Sybase IQ: How to create a DBSPACE with raw device?

  I try to add a dbspace to a demo database, using a raw device on Linux. I always get SQL error 1010000, file already exists: CREATE DBSPACE KLMTEST USING FILE DF1 '/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-1HITACHI_730109670008' IQ STORE; Could not execute statement. The file '/dev/disk/by-id/scsi-1HITACHI_730109670008' already exists. -- (st_database.cxx 2215) SQLCODE=-1010000, ODBC 3 State="HY000" Line 1, column 1 For my understanding, the raw device has to exist BEFORE the Db can use it.   Since C# uses Garbage Collection. When is it necessary to use .Dispose to free the memory? I realize there are a few situations so I'll try to list the ones I can think of. If I close a Form that contains GUI type object, are those objects dereferenced and therefore will be collected? If I create a local object using new should I .Dispose of it before the method exits or just let the GC take care of it? What is good practice in this case? Are there any times in which forcing a GC is understandable? Are events collected by the GC when it's object is collected?
