• Amazon Affiliate search using a movie title

- by Matt Walker
I am currently working on a movie trailer site. I have over 300 movies and I do not want to add an amazon affiliate link to each one individually. Does amazon offer any sort of api that will allow me to use a movie title to search for a dvd on amazon? Ex. For the movie skyfall, the amazon affiliate link would be amazon.com/search/dvd/skyfall/affiliateid ^ I just made the link up as i don't know how their system works, but I just want it to do a search on the movie title Thanks in advance for any help you can give me!

• How to Prevent Site For Penality [on hold]

- by Simon Walker
I have been working hard to recover site from Penguin 2.0 and I was successful in it. A week before Penguin 2.1 one of my competitor created thousands of spam backlinks in just 2 days. The timing is more than perfect to make my website victim of Penguin 2.1. I have disavowed all those dirty links and regularly updating the disavow sheet for poor backlinks. Is there else I can do with the site to recover faster. http://bit.ly/fvbyLg

• Retail Link data storage requirements

- by Randy Walker
I was asked today about how much data an average Retail Link analyst (Walmart vendor) would consume. I thought I would write this small post for future reference. Of course this vastly depends on the amount of skus, how long you want to archive data, and if you want store level sales. Most reports take up very little space. Most times when you download a report (total sales per sku for last week), you will overwrite the previous week’s report. However, most users will take the data inside their downloaded report, and add it to a database or larger excel spreadsheet. This way, the user has a history of the sales of each item/sku per week over the last 2+ years. I would estimate 1 user to consume around 1-2 gb of space, at most, over the course of 2 years. If you start archiving store level sales those numbers can drastically increase up to 10gb or more very quickly.

• Inexpensive Business Checks

- by Randy Walker
One of the most annoying things when setting up a business is paying the outrageous fees for business checks. When starting out, rather than pay the $150 for the handful of computer printable checks, I had bought software that would create the checks for me. But if you didn’t know, those little digits at the bottom of a check are magnetically encoded and requires special ink. Fortunately, my current bank has one of the best bill pay websites, so I have exclusively used it. But since I recently had to open a new bank account, I went off in search of a cheap alternative for business checks. A bit wary of some of the printers, I opted for TechChecks and was extremely surprised a few days later when my checks arrived in perfect condition. (I recommend the diamond prismatic red-blue-green checks. Beautiful and very professional looking.) It was perfect timing as well, since I now have to reorder some checks for another account.

• Windows Installer – InstallAware (coupon)

- by Randy Walker
Here’s another one of my tools in my toolset for deploying software. I’ve used their product for several years with great success. They make use of a PlugIn and web model. So if your software requires the .Net framework 3.5, the installer will check for all of the required runtimes, and then only download the files needed from your website. They also support patching your application. A great tool that’s well designed and easy to use. Plus, here’s a coupon code for 25% off! Coupon Code: MSMVP http://www.installaware.com/buydirect.asp

• 12.04 - why does the network icon dissapear every time my machine is turned off

- by Howard Walker
After spending an hour or two working out how to find the network Icon, I find that when I reboot the machine, I have to go through the whole procedure again. 1. The network menu is not there - so first I have to find the terminal. This has no particular location that I can find but usually I have to type terminal in the dash. 2. Then I have to type nm-applet in terminal 3. The network manager icon then appears, but only works if the terminal window remains open. Shut down the terminal window and the network disappears. This is a pain - plus I have to type my password in every time, which is another waste of time, thought this has always been a problem. So can anyone tell me how to make the web automatically connect at startup without any intervention from me.

• Design: How to model / where to store relational data between classes

- by Walker
I'm trying to figure out the best design here, and I can see multiple approaches, but none that seems "right." There are three relevant classes here: Base, TradingPost, and Resource. Each Base has a TradingPost which can offer various Resources depending on the Base's tech level. Where is the right place to store the minimum tech level a base must possess to offer any given resource? A database seems like overkill. Putting it in each subclass of Resource seems wrong--that's not an intrinsic property of the Resource. Do I have a mediating class, and if so, how does it work? It's important that I not be duplicating code; that I have one place where I set the required tech level for a given item. Essentially, where does this data belong? P.S. Feel free to change the title; I struggled to come up with one that fits.

• Storing data offline with javascript

- by Walker
My question is about storing data offline and potentially whether I will need to bring in an outside programmer or could this be learned within a few weeks? The website I am working on will have an interface where users will login and go through a series of quizzes in the form of checkbox, drop down menus, and others. Each page/quiz area could have 20-100 total checkboxes in a series of 3-5 rows because of the comprehensive nature of course. This I can do - I know how to code the quiz and return a correct or incorrect answer based on each individual checkbox and present a cumulative score (ie: you got 57% correct). The issue lies in the fact that I would like to save the users results and keep them informed of their progress. When they complete all of the quizzes, I would like to have a visual output of their performance in each area. Storing the output from their results offline is where I think I may run into a problem with my lack of coding experience. I would also like to have a sidebar with their progress of each section (10-15) with a green percentage completion bar or a % correct which would draw from this. I have never had to code something that stores information like this offline - so back to my question - would it be better to learn the language needed or bring in a coder/developer for the back end stuff.

• Googlebot requesting invalid url

- by Rob Walker
I have a web app which emails me exceptions automatically. This morning there was an error relating to a url: /Catalog/LiveCatalog?id=ylwpfqzts id is invalid (should be a guid) and caused an error parsing. Everything was handled correctly, and an error page is returned. But what was odd is that the user-agent reported itself as Googlebot and the IP is registered to Google. The URL would never have been generated by my web app but doesn't look particularly malicious. Anyone ever seen anything like this?

• Website Registration Date

- by Matt Walker
I recently registered a website : cinematrailers.net. I was aware that this domain was expired ( registered in 2007 until 2011) My question is when I go to view the registration date on this domain, it says 2012 instead of 2007. Why is that when it was clearly registered in 2007? And will this affect seo? I was under the assumption that the domains age would be great for seo, but now I'm not sure.

• Korea’s Anti Abortion / Pro Life Movement

- by Randy Walker
The South Korean government is in dire straits. The national birth rate continues to decline and as the population grows older, there aren’t enough children being born to support the country long term. The social issues of post Korean War are coming back to haunt the empowered nation. Being torn apart by the Korean War (nicknamed the forgotten war in America) and with a nation facing starvation, South Korea allowed hundreds of thousands of their children to be adopted abroad. This has created a problem of epidemic proportions, essentially devaluing life in Korea and child rearing. In an effort to encourage birth rates, the government encouraged their workers to go home early and procreate by turning off the lights in buildings. Something unknown to me, was the illegalization of abortion except in special cases. According to the this article, http://joongangdaily.joins.com it’s working. Abortions are down and women are being encouraged to give birth. However the flip side is illegal risky abortions are on the rise, with potential back alley abortions looming. But with a nation facing it’s potential implosion, it has to continue it’s efforts to encourage mothers to give birth. Many of the issues that America has faced is in stark contrast to South Korea. Abortion has been a generally accepted procedure for some time. If you’ll recall, I mentioned South Korea devalued their children. But the nation’s problems lie so much deeper. Being an Asian nation, saving “face” is an important aspect of life. And being an unwed mother disgraces the family. Living as a single mother in South Korea is a difficult life. Most married mothers stay at home to take care of the children. Being a shunned single mother that has a hard time getting a job (because you are a single mother) and affording child care isn’t like life in America. If we in the states suddenly faced a birthrate crisis, what would the U.S. government do?

• samba + kerberos ssh single signon (SSO)

- by Matt Delves
Hey folks, I'm modifying an existing samba config that it works fine for authenticating AD users on linux servers to also handle Kerberos and SSO. I've successfully got pam_winbind to use kerberos and it is handing out tickets, as well as having configured SSH to allow GSSAPI and Kerberos. Unfortunately though, when attempting to login via PuTTY using SSO, it fails. Is anyone who is familiar with configuring this able to point me in the right direction? Thanks, Matt.

• Different files on shared partition?

- by Matt Robertson
I am dual-booting Windows 8 and Ubuntu 12.04. My partition scheme looks like this: /dev/sda1 - Windows 8 (nfts) /dev/sda2 - Ubuntu / (ext4) /dev/sda3 - Ubuntu home (ext4) /dev/sda5 - swap /dev/sda6 - Shared data partition (exfat) (First off, yes I do have exfat libraries installed on Ubuntu) I created some PNG images in Windows and saved them on my shared partition. From Ubuntu, I edited the images in GIMP and saved them (replacing the ones on the shared partition). When I boot into Windows, the files appear unchanged - exactly like they did before I edited them from Ubuntu. I even added a folder and deleted some other files, but none of these changes exist in Windows. When I boot into Ubuntu, all of the changes are still there. It is as if Windows is caching the old file structure... How is this possible? Thanks in advance. • Come see us at JavaU at JavaOne!

- by tmcginn
In just a little under a month, JavaOne will be in full swing (no pun intended) and thousands of Java developers will gather to hear the latest Java news, immerse themselves in Java technology and learn some new things. This year, I am fortunate enough to be able to attend, along with my Java curriculum development colleagues Matt Heimer and Mike Williams. We start our week at JavaOne teaching a one-day session at JavaU on Sunday morning. If you have never attended a training session through JavaU, you should check it out. There are some terrific sessions this year, and it might help to justify your trip to JavaOne if you can say it was for training! This year I am teaching a one day session on Java SE 7 New Features - a great session for anyone interested in the specific details of what is new in Java SE 7. Matt is teaching a one-day session on Developing Portable Java EE applications with the Enterprise JavaBeans 3.1 API and Java Persistence 2.0 API EJB, and Mike is doing a one-day session on developing Rich Client applications with Java SE 7 using Java FX 2. I asked Matt and Mike to tell me what developers can expect from their sessions. Matt: "My session will get you up to speed on everything you need to know to create portable Java EE 6 applications using EJB 3.1 and JPA 2. I am going to cover why everyone can benefit from using EJBs (and why developers should relearn them if they haven't looked at them for years). Students who attend my session will see JPA examples showcasing how to use relational databases in an enterprise applications without programming to JDBC and without writing SQL statements. EJB and JPA benefit from being paired together, so I will also show how transaction management is easier in a container. I encourage students to bring a laptop and code as they learn!" Mike: "My session covers how to develop a rich client application using Java FX 2. Starting with the basic concepts of JavaFX, students will see how a JavaFX application is built from its layout, to its controls, to its data structures. In addition, more advanced controls like charts, smart tables, and transitions will be added to the application. Finally, a quick review of JavaFX concurrency and data binding is included. Blended with the core concepts the session will include some of the latest JavaFX technology. This includes using Scene Builder to create a JavaFX UI and connecting your XML UI definition to Java code. In addition, packaging of the JavaFX application will be covered with some examples of the new native packaging features." As I mentioned, my session covers the changes in the Java for SE 7, including the language changes that were voted into Java SE 7 from Project Coin. I will also look at how you can take advantage if the the new I/O library (NIO.2) for writing applications that work with files, directories and file systems. We will also look at the changes in Asynchronous I/O that are a part of the changes in NIO/2. We will spend some time looking at the changes to the Java Virtual Machine as well, including support for dynamically typed languages (JSR-292). We will spend some time looking at the Java Concurrency enhancements (JSR-166), including the new Fork/Join framework. And we'll round out the day with a look at changes in Swing, XML and a number of smaller changes in the API's. And, if these topics aren't grabbing your interest, take a look at the other 10 sessions that range from topics on architecture to how to pass the Oracle Certified Programmer I and II exams. See you soon!

• Stackify Aims to Put More ‘Dev’ in ‘DevOps’

- by Matt Watson
Originally published on VisualStudioMagazine.com on 8/22/2012 by Keith Ward. The Kansas City-based startup wants to make it easier for developers to examine the network stack and find problems in code. The first part of “DevOps” is “Dev”. But according to Matt Watson, Devs aren’t connected enough with Ops, and it’s time that changed. He founded the startup company Stackify earlier this year to do something about it. Stackify gives developers unprecedented access to the IT side of the equation, Watson says, without putting additional burden on the system and network administrators who ultimately ensure the health of the environment.“We need a product designed for developers, with the goal of getting them more involved in operations and app support. Now, there’s next to nothing designed for developers,” Watson says. Stackify allows developers to search the network stack to troubleshoot problems in their software that might otherwise take days of coordination between development and IT teams to solve.Stackify allows developers to search log files, configuration files, databases and other infrastructure to locate errors. A key to this is that the developers are normally granted read-only access, soothing admin fears that developers will upload bad code to their servers.Implementation starts with data collection on the servers. Among the information gleaned is application discovery, server monitoring, file access, and other data collection, according to Stackify’s Web site. Watson confirmed that Stackify works seamlessly with virtualized environments as well.Although the data collection software must be installed on Windows servers, it can monitor both Windows and Linux servers. Once collection’s finished, developers have the kind of information they need, without causing heartburn for the IT staff.Stackify is a 100 percent cloud-based service. The company uses Windows Azure for hosting, a decision Watson’s happy with. With Azure, he says, “It’s nice to have all the dev tools like cache and table storage.” Although there have been a few glitches here and there with the service, it’s run very smoothly for the most part, he adds.Stackify is currently in a closed beta, with a public release scheduled for October. Watson says that pricing is expected to be $25 per month, per server, with volume discounts available. He adds that the target audience is companies with at least five developers.Watson founded Stackify after selling his last company, VinSolutions, to AutoTrader.com for “close to $150 million”, according to press accounts. Watson has since founded the Watson Technology Group, which focuses on angel investing.About the Author: Keith Ward is the editor in chief of Visual Studio Magazine.

• Kauffman Foundation Selects Stackify to Present at Startup@Kauffman Demo Day

- by Matt Watson
Stackify will join fellow Kansas City startups to kick off Global Entrepreneurship WeekOn Monday, November 12, Stackify, a provider of tools that improve developers’ ability to support, manage and monitor their enterprise applications, will pitch its technology at the Startup@Kauffman Demo Day in Kansas City, Mo. Hosted by the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation, the event will mark the start of Global Entrepreneurship Week, the world’s largest celebration of innovators and job creators who launch startups.Stackify was selected through a competitive process for a six-minute opportunity to pitch its new technology to investors at Demo Day. In his pitch, Stackify’s founder, Matt Watson, will discuss the current challenges DevOps teams face and reveal how Stackify is reinventing the way software developers provide application support. In October, Stackify had successful appearances at two similar startup events. At Tech Cocktail’s Kansas City Mixer, the company was named “Hottest Kansas City Startup,” and it won free hosting service after pitching its solution at St. Louis, Mo.’s Startup Connection.“With less than a month until our public launch, events like Demo Day are giving Stackify the support and positioning we need to change the development community,” said Watson. “As a serial technology entrepreneur, I appreciate the Kauffman Foundation’s support of startup companies like Stackify. We’re thrilled to participate in Demo Day and Global Entrepreneurship Week activities.”Scheduled to publicly launch in early December 2012, Stackify’s platform gives developers insights into their production applications, servers and databases. Stackify finally provides agile developers safe and secure remote access to look at log files, config files, server health and databases. This solution removes the bottleneck from managers and system administrators who, until now, are the only team members with access. Essentially, Stackify enables development teams to spend less time fixing bugs and more time creating products.Currently in beta, Stackify has already been named a “Company to Watch” by Software Development Times, which called the startup “the next big thing.” Developers can register for a free Stackify account on Stackify.com.###Stackify Founded in 2012, Stackify is a Kansas City-based software service provider that helps development teams troubleshoot application problems. • Convert Javascript Regular Expression to PHP (PCRE) Expression

- by Matt
Hi all, I am up to my neck in regular expressions, and I have this regular expression that works in javascript (and flash) that I just can't get working in PHP Here it is: var number = '(?:-?\\b(?:0|[1-9][0-9]*)(?:\\.[0-9]+)?(?:[eE][+-]?[0-9]+)?\\b)'; var oneChar = '(?:[^\\0-\\x08\\x0a-\\x1f\"\\\\]' + '|\\\\(?:[\"/\\\\bfnrt]|u[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}))'; var str = '(?:\"' + oneChar + '*\")'; var varName = '\\$(?:' + oneChar + '[^ ,]*)'; var func = '(?:{[ ]*' + oneChar + '[^ ]*)'; // Will match a value in a well-formed JSON file. // If the input is not well-formed, may match strangely, but not in an unsafe // way. // Since this only matches value tokens, it does not match whitespace, colons, // or commas. var jsonToken = new RegExp( '(?:false|true|null' +'|[\\}]' + '|' + varName + '|' + func + '|' + number + '|' + str + ')', 'g'); If you want it fully assembled here it is: /(?:false|true|null|[\}]|\$(?:(?:[^\0-\x08\x0a-\x1f"\\]|\\(?:["/\\bfnrt]|u[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}))[^ ,]*)|(?:{[ ]*(?:[^\0-\x08\x0a-\x1f"\\]|\\(?:["/\\bfnrt]|u[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}))[^ ]*)|(?:-?\b(?:0|[1-9][0-9]*)(?:\.[0-9]+)?(?:[eE][+-]?[0-9]+)?\b)|(?:"(?:[^\0-\x08\x0a-\x1f"\\]|\\(?:["/\\bfnrt]|u[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}))*"))/g Interestingly enough, its very similar to JSON. I need this regular expression to work in PHP... Here's what I have in PHP: $number = '(?:-?\\b(?:0|[1-9][0-9]*)(?:\\.[0-9]+)?(?:[eE][+-]?[0-9]+)?\\b)'; $oneChar = '(?:[^\\0-\\x08\\x0a-\\x1f\"\\\\]|\\\\(?:[\"/\\\\bfnrt]|u[0-9A-Fa-f]{4}))'; $string = '(?:\"'.$oneChar.'*\")'; $varName = '\\$(?:'.$oneChar.'[^ ,]*)'; $func = '(?:{[ ]*'.$oneChar.'[^ ]*)'; $jsonToken = '(?:false|true|null' .'|[\\}]' .'|'.$varName .'|'.$func .'|'.$number .'|'.$string .')'; echo $jsonToken; preg_match_all($jsonToken, $content, $out); return $out; Here's what happens if I try using preg_match_all(): Warning: preg_match_all() [function.preg-match-all]: Compilation failed: nothing to repeat at offset 0 in /Users/Matt/Sites/Templating/json/Jeeves.php on line 88 Any help would be much appreciated! The current regex is REF_REGEX = re.compile(r'(?<!\w)((?i)q(?:uote)?\s+)?((?:(?:[1-3]|I{1,3})\s*)?[A-Za-z]+)\.?(?:\s*(\d+)(?:[:.](\d+)(?:-(\d+))?)?)(?:\s+(?:(?i)(?:from\s+)|(?:in\s+)|(?P<lbrace>\())\s*(\w+)(?(lbrace)\)))?', re.UNICODE) This matches the following expressions fine: "jn 3:16": (None, 'jn', '3', '16', None, None, None), "matt. 18:21-22": (None, 'matt', '18', '21', '22', None, None), "q matt. 18:21-22": ('q ', 'matt', '18', '21', '22', None, None), "QuOTe jn 3:16": ('QuOTe ', 'jn', '3', '16', None, None, None), "q 1co13:1": ('q ', '1co', '13', '1', None, None, None), "q 1 co 13:1": ('q ', '1 co', '13', '1', None, None, None), "quote 1 co 13:1": ('quote ', '1 co', '13', '1', None, None, None), "quote 1co13:1": ('quote ', '1co', '13', '1', None, None, None), "jean 3:18 (PDV)": (None, 'jean', '3', '18', None, '(', 'PDV'), "quote malachie 1.1-2 fRom Colombe": ('quote ', 'malachie', '1', '1', '2', None, 'Colombe'), "quote malachie 1.1-2 In Colombe": ('quote ', 'malachie', '1', '1', '2', None, 'Colombe'), "cinq jn 3:16 (test)": (None, 'jn', '3', '16', None, '(', 'test'), "Q IIKings5.13-58 from wolof": ('Q ', 'IIKings', '5', '13', '58', None, 'wolof'), "This text is about lv5.4-6 in KJV only": (None, 'lv', '5', '4', '6', None, 'KJV'), but it fails to parse: "Found in 2 Cor. 5:18-21 ( Ministers": (None, '2 Cor', '5', '18', '21', None, None), because it returns (None, 'in', '2', None, None, None, None) instead. Is there a way to get finditer() to return all matches, even if they overlap, or is there a way to improve my regex so it matches this last bit properly? Thanks.
